Book Description

Nearly every artist under the age of fifty in the United States today has a Master of Fine Arts degree. Howard Singerman's thoughtful study is the first to place that degree in its proper historical framework and ideological context. Arguing that where artists are trained makes a difference in the forms and meanings they produce, he shows how the university, with its disciplined organization of knowledge and demand for language, played a critical role in the production of modernism in the visual arts. Now it is shaping what we call postmodernism: like postmodernist art, the graduate university stresses theory and research over manual skills and traditional techniques of representation.
Singerman, who holds an M.F.A. in sculpture as well as a Ph.D. in Visual and Cultural Studies, is interested in the question of the artist as a "professional" and what that word means for and about the fashioning of artists. He begins by examining the first campus-based art schools in the 1870s and goes on to consider the structuring role of women art educators and women students; the shift from the "fine arts" to the "visual arts"; the fundamental grammar of art laid down in the schoolroom; and the development of professional art training in the American university. Singerman's book reveals the ways we have conceived of art in the past hundred years and have institutionalized that conception as atelier activity, as craft, and finally as theory and performance.

3 out of 5 stars Late in Coming - Graduate Students Read This.......2006-07-20

This book was assigned for a required graduate seminar in art history and studio arts. Discussion of the professionalization of the fine art degree through university art education systems results in a glut of MFA artists and terminal MA art history graduates with degrees that do not hold equalavancy to the Ph.D. in the competitive realm of academia. By the time we read this in the final semesters of the degree curriculuum, everyone wanted to change majors but it was too late. Try reading at the BA level before spending thousands of dollars on a graduate degree.

    Book Description

In all its forms from hardcore to trance, Techno has moved from its small underground club beginnings to connect with the pulse of today's youth. Moreover techno has moved beyond the music to create its own distinct cultural identity.

This book charts the development of the Techno movement and celebrates the graphics and fashion that it has given rise to. Works of Peter Saville, The Designers Republic, KM7 and Jaffa, The Unknown are recorded. Accordingly an overall synthesis is presented of a music form, which like Punk in the 70's and Rock in the 60's, has come to mark the age.

The flyers in this book are so cool... And the pictures of the parties were cool... But they should have taken out the part about fashion, and included more pictures of actual parties...

5 out of 5 stars That guy doesnt know what he's talking about.......1999-02-09

I think if you buy this book for what it is- An art book based around techno, then you will be more than satisfied. It has lots of great design work throughout. I think you would be happy you spent your money on this one.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1998-10-14

Has a few excellent graphics, but most of it is pretty disappointing and pretty dull. It certainly doesn't showcase much of the best of the genre - you can see better stuff on the table by the door of any dance music store in London, Manchester, New York or San Francisco. Perhaps it's the over-emphasis on the soulless & groove-free German scene that has produced this - hardly surprising if the art's a reflection of that scene's music.

It is a very practical guide for handy information. It is quite usefull for my daily work needs.

3 out of 5 stars Useful overview, but not perfect.......2001-06-14

I'm not a CFA candidate, but I've been an investor for years and always appreciate learning more about the field. My father was president of the CFA for a couple of years, and after 15 years working on Wall Street I have a reasonably broad understanding of some finance.

What impressed me most about the book was how short and terse the definitions were. Clearly they are useful and present good insight into what's important and why.

What impressed me least was the lack of mathematical rigour (perhaps one can't have both brievity and exactness?). For example, many of the formulas only work for specific instances, and details about yield/rate conventions are omitted.

Overall, it struck me as useful overview and quick reminder to financial analysis and the language/terms used. It's not really indispensable, and is not authoritative. But for a quick refresher, or ballpark estimates it's fine.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for those studying or who've completed the CFA.......2001-05-13

This is the only book of its kind, so far. The author compiled this pocket guide after completing his CFA program and realising that the vast concepts, terms and designations learnt were soon being forgotten.

That being the case, candidates of, as well as those who have completed, the CFA program would find this book a useful one-stop guide to all those concepts, terms and designations learnt in the pursuit of the CFA designation.

The book is arranged broadly around the various topics of the CFA program i.e. Quantitative Methods, Economics, Financial Statements Analysis, Equities, Fixed Income, Derivatives, Real Estate, Portfolio Management, Ethics, Behavioural Finance. As such, the CFA candidate would find this book more useful than say, a general finance/business masters student.

But I reckon that this book, though published as recent as this year, is already in need of an update. The CFA syllabus is constantly evolving. As a result, a number of concepts in say, Level 1 of the CFA Program, are not found in this book. Also, a number of the textbooks used in the CFA program which the author had based his book on, have either been superseded by newer editions or replaced all together.

All in all, I found this to be a useful book and a unique concept. Until a better book comes along, I will be using this book religiously to prepare for the CFA exams as well as to refresh my memory.

4 out of 5 stars Good starting point.......2001-04-02

As a CFA candidate, I find this to be a useful summary of the key concepts that we are taught during the course of the programme. However, regard it as more of a "Cliff's Notes" of the programme -- with all its inevitable shortcomings -- but a handy little reference piece nonetheless. After completion of the programme and years down the road, I am sure that I will find it quite useful in helping to jog my memory and the sleepless nights that the CFA programme gave me! -- I hope, however, that a revised version will be introduced and perhaps with a less odd title. It is not a book for everyone, but anyone who wishes that s/he had made notes whilst studying for the CFA programme will find this book useful.

This book is not a get rich quick scheme. Its not about getting in with nothing down, and its not about making empty promises either. Instead, William Tappan has put together a brilliant book full of analysis techniques, including both market factors and financial analysis. It is truly an outstanding book, as a reader of over 40 real estate investment books, i would rate this as the single best real estate book out there.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best version of this piece for the piano player!.......2000-12-03

Being a professional pianist for over 10 years, I heard Rhapsody in Blue after buying the Fantasia 2000 CD. I was astonished. I immediately went to Sam Ash and I found this book. It is by far THE MOST COMPLETE sheet music book of this piece. The piano 4 hands or version for 2 pianos doesn't come close to what this book has. In the first several pages, it describes all of the changes and improvisations put on the piece since its debut. Then, it gives the player and FULL version, including, orchestra parts that can be played on the piano. Granted, it's a very difficult piece, but it sounds wonderful. Even if you're a beginner or intermediate player, you will find much information and joy from this book. I highly recommend it!

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Mainly for ChessBase users.......2004-01-15

I've changed my opinion on this book after looking at it more closely.

Although the book concentrates on ChessBase products, ChessAssistant is given a fair mention, along with some freely available products.

This is not a bad book. Its advice on using databases for self-improvement is sound and reasonable. It might be useful to somebody who has no idea whatsoever how to use a Chess database.

I think there are better, easier, cheaper ways to learn. On the other hand, a database can be expensive. This is a small additional price to help you make the most of your investment.

Why only 2 stars? There is too much fluff and filler. A book on chess software should not have so many single-position diagrams for study. Those diagrams might have been more useful if we knew the games they came from. Then we could pull them up in our handy-dandy database.

The authors completely overlook what is by far the most valuable training software, from Convekta. In fact, tactics training is given short shrift, even though it is arguably the best reason for using a computer to study chess.

Most of what is in this book is fairly obvious. The advice is available in paragraphs -- and sometimes full chapters -- in many other chess books. I would expect a full-length book to be detailed and comprehensive. There are definitely things I could learn about using chess databases, but not here.

3 out of 5 stars For the Expert and Up.....mostly.......2004-01-07

as a 1600-1700 player, I found most of the advise here a bit elevated for my use. Be advised that virtually all the information is targeted to those who own and use ChessBase and Fritz, the book speaks to no other programs. Most players under 2000, I believe, will get more use from spending the money you would use for this book to buy other training software or books targeted to combination practice or strategy etc. To make a long story short, for a very strong player with a lot of time for study, this is probably full of good advise. For the average tournament player I think there are better uses for your money.

5 out of 5 stars Broadening one's playing styles to learn more about oneself.......2003-11-17

The collaborative effort of computer chess experts Byron Jacobs, Jacob Aagaard, and John Emms, Chess Software User's Guide is a unique chess guide written especially for those who use computer software to practice their playing skills, store and replay games from data, analyze their game-related strengths and weaknesses, and much more. Individual chapters discuss taking advantage of software to learn a new opening more easily; training one's gaming skill; and broadening one's playing styles to learn more about oneself and one's opponents. Black-and-white diagrams and photographs round out this practical and forward-thinking instructional manual for playing computerized chess. Send for the free Everyman Chess catalog for a complete and up-to-date listing of all of their superb chess titles.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Suitable for readers who never know about Chinese business.......2005-05-30

The philosophical paradigm of this book is that culture determines the way people value and behave in the business world.

This book is relevant to readers who are new to the Chinese business world. Professor Chen from Darden Business School defines `Chinese business world' to encompass Chinese in the mainland and overseas. As the Chinese business world is very culturally-determined, he concludes that traditional cultural values govern how people undertake and organise their businesses in various aspects. Salient cultural values include family-oriented, guanxi and networking, the middle way, and patience.

Professor Chen concludes that Chinese culture and business practices are diametrically different from the West. If readers are quite familar with the Chinese world, they will find a bit frustrated because there are too many management studies that have fallen on this subject. Another limitation of this book is that Professor Chen assumes that cultural values and business practices of Mainland and Overseas Chinese are analogous. He fails to understand that the way to conduct business is different between mainland and overseas Chinese. For example, entrepreneurs from Mainland China tend to be more speculative or opportunistic and less ethical than other Chinese entrepreneurs in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Intro to China Business.......2004-09-28

I see that several readers have panned this one... it may very well be some old info, as pointed out by some apparently "old China hands"... but don't rush to judgement... there are many of us who are just getting started there.

I picked up the book in the Hong Kong airport on my way into China for the first time, on business.

It was a treasure on that trip. First of all, it is not too heavy. Much more importantly, readers can get a great overview of what they might be facing. Mir-Ching Jen grew up and studied in China, including classic Confucius and other studies. This may make him almost unique in the ranks of "about China" books. some of his insight is very helpful... the book reads well the 2nd and third time.

If you are looking for a first pass intro, get this book. Then, as we all have and will, continue to get and read more. There is no one (or two) books that will cover it all for any of us. This is a great start.

        1 out of 5 stars Rehashed.......2002-11-04

Very little in this book is original. Even the title is borrowed from "Inside Chinese Organizations" written earlier by Kai-Alexander Schlevogt (a sound empirical study)! The style, emphasis and content is very similar to "New Asian Emperors" by George Haley and Chin Tiong Tan (a much better written book with a more complex grasp of the terrain of Chinese management).

The author does tackle some concepts such as "face" etc., but these provide very little insights for any but the most extreme novices.

        Disappointing.

        1 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......2002-11-04

I agree with some of the reviewers below -- this book presents a complex topic in a very simplistic fashion. The concepts covered are very basic and almost naive.

1 out of 5 stars Very naive and simplistic.......2002-10-10

Given the build up for this book, I found it very disappointing. It completely ignores the fact that most American companies have failed in China -- precisely following the strategies the author advocated! If you know very little about China, and have eaten at a Chinese restaurant a couple of times, this book should provide an easy introduction. Otherwise, pass on it! I would much rather recommend "New Asian Emperors: The Overseas Chinese, their Strategies and Competitive Advantages" by George T. Haley et al. for a more complex understanding of business culture in the region.
