First published in 1993 in France, this English translation of Marie-France Pochna's biography of Christian Dior appears in time for the 50th anniversary of Dior's debut in the world of fashion and coincides with a retrospective of Dior's design work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a biography of the designer, Pochna's book is complete and telling, perhaps not swept up high enough in the airy realms of fashion to please devoted couture mavens but highly informative and interesting for general readers interested in Dior and his impact on the fashion industry. The business of fashion rather than the artistry of Dior's designs is where Pochna directs much of her attention. After all, the marketing and branding that Dior helped initiate was innovative, so discussions of licensing agreements and the development of designer accessories, along with Dior's youthful development and inspirations, blend into a provocative profile of this fashion great.

    4 out of 5 stars DIOR.......2006-04-16

Ah, the great Dior, by which all other 20th century designers measured themselves against; from Yves St. Laurant to Coco Chanel, they all viewed Dior as the master. Even today his name is synonymous with style and elegance. This book is thorough and well written, Dior was a fascinating man and he is really fleshed out here. Very good book on a singular talent.

      4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-05-12

Will go into detail about all you need to know and some helpful hints it's all in there.

2 out of 5 stars Should be titled how to cut your losses.......2007-04-06

The premise of the book seems to be that you won't recover all of the money you spend on improvements let alone make any. The book references remodeling magazine as a source of obtaining a dollar cost and value added. Again, cost is always higher than value added.

Another fitting title might be "improve the value of your home by 100,000 dollars while spending 130,000 to do it!"

I strongly recommend that people read through the table of contents and possibily skim through it if you have the opportunity. Read one of the chapters and you'll see what I mean, then decide if it's right for you. Most of the chapters follow the same format with different projets. Unfortuately for me, I already bought it based on the amazing scores everyone else gave it.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for..........2005-12-30

I'm preparing to sell my house and this book is exactly what I wanted to help me figure out what I needed to do, what I could do, and what I shouldn't bother with. On top of it's rather useful information, it's highly readable. I was afraid it would be overly wordy or bogged down with real estate-y stuff, but it's an easy read for your casual non-DIYer home seller. I wouldn't recommend that you use this as your reference on your first flip or anything, but if you want to sell your house and prepare it as well as possible first, this book suits.

5 out of 5 stars increase your value.......2005-07-06

this book is a must have for anyone doing real estate of any kind. If you are trying to re-finance or to buy this ideas are wonderful and make completer sense.

1 out of 5 stars Very little value........2005-04-25

Buy this only if you haven't been following news and magazine articles that outline the same issues. There is no enlightening message or original statistical model here.

      Book Description

Embracing both overlooked B movies and acknowledged classics, contributors trace the influence of the Hollywood gangster picture on its British counterpart, discussing the effect of film censors' hostility, and assessing the crime film's relationship to the British New Wave. Examining the subversion of feminine stereotypes in the underworld film, British Crime Cinema stresses the importance of the crime film in understanding masculinity in British cinema, and the shifting gender relations of postwar Britain.

This is a brilliant synthesis of all that is good in British Crime Cinema. The essays are clear and well-focussed, and the referencing is excellent. Particularly well-written and pertinent to the present popularity of such films as Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is Claire Monk's essay on Crime and British cinema in the 1990s. The referencing to both earlier crime cinema and the wider genre of hip, cool trendy cinema directed at the 18-25 year old male with its additional sound track identity is worth reading for anyone concentrating on film studies. Both a good read and an excellent reference work.

Movie lovers would be well served if every film genre had a book devoted to it that is as loving and comprehensive as The BFI Companion to Crime. Editor Phil Hardy, who also oversaw the excellent Overlook encyclopedias of horror, science fiction, and Western films, has outdone himself with this volume. Teaming with the British Film Institute, Hardy has produced a volume that covers all aspects of the crime film. You'll find entries on every significant movie in the genre: classics such as The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, Chinatown, and Goodfellas; lesser-known works such as An American Tragedy, Raw Deal, Peeping Tom, and Mona Lisa; popular favorites such as Die Hard and Pulp Fiction; and foreign films from Les Vampires to Diva. Entries for each movie summarize and evaluate the film and provide a full list of credits.

The companion also covers the lives and careers of important pulp novelists such as Agatha Christie, Daphne du Maurier, and Elmore Leonard (whose books were frequently made into movie classics) and approaches the genre by subject. Entries on a variety of relevant topics include blackmail, drugs, Fu Manchu, homosexuality, Sherlock Holmes, and vigilantes. Perhaps the best feature of the book are the hundreds of photographs, in both color and black and white, that illustrate the volume. They are the most striking collection of stills you'll see in any movie book, and they collectively give a taste of the crime film's extraordinary visual richness. This superb companion is full of detail, yet is so accessible that it will delight both crime film aficionados and fans who are just getting acquainted with this deep genre.

      Book Description

Robbers, gangsters, murderers, and criminals of every description have long been a staple of popular entertainment. Movies are no exception, and film buffs and scholars alike now have a complete guide to the vast array of films that make up the fascinating world of crime cinema. The BFI Companion to Crime offers detailed information on the sub-genres and motifs of movies dealing with criminals and their behavior: prison dramas, heist stories, kidnappings, the exploits of serial killers, juvenile delinquents, and hired guns. Phil Hardy also includes articles on the historical and social background of crime movies. The Mafia, the Japanese yakuza, the FBI, and the underworld of union rackets, prostitution, and drugs are some of the topics covered. Fictional characters such as Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Maigret, Philip Marlow, and Pretty Boy Floyd appear in these pages, along with the literary sources of many crime films. The works of Graham Greene, Dashiell Hammett, Mickey Spillane, and Eric Ambler are among those featured. Abundantly illustrated with more than 500 photographs, this is the book for film enthusiasts and anyone interested in the crime genre.

5 out of 5 stars Sociohistorical Survey of "Crime in Film" Genre.......2001-04-02

"There have always been crime stories," says Richard Attenborough, in his foreward to "The BFI Companion to Crime." Cinematic representations of crime and criminals are a worldwide phenomenon still in force after one hundred years. What editor Phil Hardy has done in his excellent reference book is to create an encyclopedic survey of the crime film genre from its "origins at a certain period in Europe in the late nineteenth century which saw the formation of an organised police force and the professionalisation of both the forces of law and the criminal . . . .[that] gave rise to a literature, of which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the first great exponent, in which the process of investigation is paramount . . . ." Such an investigation, or "police procedural," did not concern itself solely with crime-solving: an apprehension of the criminal, or "alleged perp," occurred. This "apprehension" involved a physical detention for questioning, as a means of "apprehending" the psychological and social dimensions of crime and criminal. In other words, the evolution of the crime film genre brought about an exploration of minds and motivations of criminals that would no longer be hidden in literary detail.

"What then arose both in Europe and America during the 1920s," according to Mr Hardy, "were a series of representations of daring criminals (Fantômas, Dr Mabuse) and striking and highly popular recreations of the criminal underworld." The high energy of the Roaring Twenties during Prohibition, with its G-Men enforcers, produced the gangster film, a popular genre which initiated a "ripped from the headlines" approach to filmmaking that still persists today. A listing of these early gangster films would include: "Underworld" (1927), "Little Caesar" (1930), "The Public Enemy" (1931), and "Scarface" (1932). As the Depression of the 1930s wore on, people cheered gangsters in films and made them their folk heroes. After federal agent Melvin Purvis gunned down John Dillinger in 1934, the gangster film shifted into a subgenre; now cops and criminals would have double billing, and television entered the scene. (Fast forward to "The Untouchables," "The Godfather Trilogy," "Mean Streets," "Goodfellas," and "The Sopranos," to name but a few examples.)

This "Companion" artfully deconstructs the complex genre (or subgenre) of film noir that emerged in the early 1940s. These films noirs (and neo-noirs) have generated a cottage industry of critical and popular texts. While I do not concur with the editor's thesis of "the lethargy that was film noir," I believe he presents quite valuable insights to the genre.

Several sociohistorical factors came into play at the beginning of the 1940s: America's involvement in World War II; the resurgence of the American economy concomitant with Rosie-the-Riveter's replacement of men in the workplace; and the shifting roles of women and men ("Mildred Pierce"). Soon, contrasting and overlapping images of overworld and underworld intruded into film: "police were expected to be corrupt and the man running the nightclub was expected to be a criminal" ("The Big Sleep" and "Murder My Sweet"). With the appearance of " 'femmes fatales,' preying on confused males" in these films, Hardy sees "languidity" and "lack of masculine energy" in this subgenre: ". . . the way a (wo)man held a cigarette was as important as the way (s)he held a gun."

Films of the 1930s and 1940s also illustrate the influences of Freudian psychology and psychoanalysis, and of German Expressionist artists and filmmakers. "John Huston's 'The Maltese Falcon' (1941), adapted from Dashiell Hammett's novel and one of the earliest 'films noirs,' is a convenient starting-point from which to examine changes in the narrative strategies of the crime film . . . ." The 1950s highlighted "the importance of the crime writer to the crime film." Preceded by a few pages of color photos from contemporary crime cinema, the extensive glossary includes entries of many of these writers (e.g., James M. Cain, Raymond Chandler, and Elmore Leonard).

"The BFI Companion to Crime" is a fascinating and up-to-date reference for the "crime film" genre. After spending time with Attenborough's gossipy foreward and Hardy's informative, opinionated, and rambling introduction, one might even read the rest from cover-to-cover. One drawback is the lack of an index and appendixes: no filmography or bibliography. However, the book is cross-referenced in bold type and displays several b & w photos per page.

While there are many subgenres of the crime film genre, not all films with crimes are considered here, such as horror films and Westerns because they are considered by most film viewers, scholars, and critics to be separate genres. Film buffs may argue endlessly on what constitutes a genre or subgenre in film, with collateral agreements and disagreements as to the catergorisation of which film belongs in what genre or subgenre. Thus, I consider this book to be an invaluable reference for the crime film buff.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book.......2007-01-16

I purchased the book since my employer explained that I will become an independent contractor for 2007. The book explained everything about being a contractor and how to stay in line with paying the taxes, how to protect my self employed status, what deductions I can take, and what forms and agreements I should use. I found it very informative and would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the world of self employment.

5 out of 5 stars All the legal tips, tricks and traps explained.......2006-04-20

Plenty of books impart the basics of how to work independently - but too few include all the legal tips, tricks and traps involved. WORKING FOR YOURSELF: LAW & TAXES FOR INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS, FREELANCERS & CONSULTANTS covers everything from setting appropriate fees and understanding how and when taxes are paid to limiting liability and getting paid. Record-keeping processes are simplified with sample logs and entry advice, chapters on how the IRS defines an independent contractor versus a paid employee are essential keys to keeping independent status, and advice on pricing and insurance offer key strategy-oriented tips and approaches. A 'must' for any who would work independently.

4 out of 5 stars Great straghtforward information and advice.......2005-09-17

I recently a started an S corp for my software contracting. The book is helpful and worth the price. It won't answer EVERY question you will have, but you probably should talk to a CPA for those anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Another Nolo Press Winner.......2005-07-28

My husband is an independent photographer, so the Nolo Press books are great for him, geared as they are to all those wishing to handle all the paperwork for themselves, instead of the usual array of lawyers, accountants, etc. He keeps it as a reference book and can easily turn to whatever subject he needs more information on. Well-written and easy to understand, as are all Nolo books, these books are wonderful to review periodically.

5 out of 5 stars Straighforward intro to the legal aspects of freelancing.......2004-05-04

A potential employer asked that I incorporate my freelancing business before they start sending me jobs. I wanted to do some research on the pros/cons of incorporating, what kind of start-ups costs this would entail, and what kind of corporation I should be. At first, the whole process of incorporating sounded like a huge money burden on my part--with filing fees and taxes--but this book has helped me sort out the issues and provided detailed information about the different ways to incorporate--sole proprietorship, LLC, S-corps. Although I haven't yet decided which path I will take, this book has made the jump to freelancing, and self-incorporating, less scary.

Not only do I understand my choices better, but I also now understand the different structures for businesses and their tax responsibilities. Great distillation of information! The copies of tax forms in the back are also a great reference. Highly recommended.
