The ultimate swipe file........2004-08-01

Although published in 1980 I think this lovely book is still relevant in this digital age. The idea was to make a collection of visual cliches (over fifteen hundred included) and I think the authors succeed wonderfully. Each page is divided into three columns and the text is arranged alphabetically, Bullet holes, Bullfighter, Burnt paper, Bus, Bust are the words on page thirty-six. Every word has at least one graphic image, some have several, Heart has eight for instance, and they are all given a designer's credit, date, country of origin plus a few words about what the design is meant to convey. The material covers ads, packaging, magazine covers, logos, posters, brochure covers and most examples of designed printed matter.

Many of the graphics are American and mostly date from the mid-Fifties to the mid-Seventies, a period in which graphic and typographic design was unusually creative I think. Look through the index of creative folk and the regulars have plenty of showings, Saul Bass, Seymour Chwast, Lou Dorfsman, Bob Gill, George Lois, Herb Lubalin, Paul Rand (with fifty-five examples) Ben Shahn, Arnold Varga and Henry Wolf, to name just ten. The only disappointment I have is that all this wonderful material is not in color

So if you work in the visual creative biz and can't think of something use this book to kick-start your ideas. It's how you present the idea that counts.

Save your money.......2003-06-15

Simply put, how can you have a "Dictionary of Photography"
without any photographic examples? I am an Amateur / Semi-Professional who has been shooting photos for nearly 25 years.
I have photographed weddings, corporate events and stock photos. As well as art photos for my own personal enjoyment. Maybe its my level of knowledge and expertise, but I don't see how this book would be of much use to anyone. Dedicated Amateurs and Professionals such as my self would know what the author was trying to say. However, a beginner or even an intermediate photographer might not understand a text only definition. Imagine Gray's Anatomy as only text and no diagrams. Granted one cannot have a picture next to every entry, that just wouldn't be practical. But the publishing company should include several hundred photographic examples for its next edition. If anyone reading this review is considering this book, take it from someone who knows, save your money. Purchase "The Photographer's Handbook" by John Hedgecoe instead.

The individual who only read about the book should try reading it. If his attention span is long enough.

I was looking for straight cryptograms. This book is a variety of puzzles and not the plain old cryptograms! This book might be really good, it just wasn't what I was looking for. Maybe the product description could have been better detailed?

Rich Hamilton's book Disney Magic, Business Strategy You Can Use At Work and At Home, is a refreshing look at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. The first time I read the book I outlined it because I felt there were so many areas that I could improve my professional and personal approach to things. What a wonderful surprise to hear he gives lectures to supplement the book and he has an internet site to enjoy once you've read the book. Although its a business book, it reads like Disney fun. One thing is for certain, Rich really pays attention to how the Parks are run. Buy his book and capture his thoughts for yourself.

Firstly, this book is about Disney Magic. That is true, and we'll get to the content shortly. What sets this book aside from a lot of others is that the Author himself actually believes and uses his own advice, which makes the information even easier to read and digest than many other business strategy guides.

Th information inside is simple: How to build a better business using principles based on careful observation of the Disney way of doing things. And it works.

The actual information is very valuable, and will surprise and delight you with it's insightful backstage glimpses. it contains solid grounding for building a successful and profitable business that attracts customers again and again.

It is also an excellent read, and one which I would recommend for fans of anything Disney, as there are plenty of fun facts and secrets, some known already and some that will mke you say "I never knew that !" You will find yourself re-reading this book for the entertainment value as WELL as the business information.
