          Book Description

It is easy to view fashion as an entirely modern concept. Costume historians, in fact, trace the birth of fashion back to the thirteenth century and writings on fashion date back as early as the sixteenth century. This classic fashion writing has profoundly shaped our understanding of modern day dress—from the psychology of clothes to collective fashion trends. Its impact, however, has not previously been recognized.

Fashion Foundations fills this major gap in the history of the discipline. This key text reprints a collection of pioneering fashion statements. Vital yet sometimes ignored treasures are brought together for the first time, tracing fashion writing from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. Why do we wear clothes? What do they say about our self-awareness and body image? How can we "fashion" new identities through what we wear? In this book, Michel de Montaigne, William Hazlitt, Herbert Spencer, Thorstein B. Veblen, Adam Smith, Herbert Blumer, and Georg Simmel answer these questions and many more. In the process they reveal the true origins of our contemporary approach to fashion.

          Book Description

The first comprehensive retrospective of one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century, who began his career as one of the most innovative comic book creators of his generation.

A gigantic retrospective/biography/critical assessment of one of the most important cartoonists in the history of comics, who went on to become a renowned fine artist and teacher in New York. The author had full access to Bernard Krigstein's archives and files and has written a compelling biography of the artist from his childhood in New York to his days as a comics artist from the late '40s to the early '60s, and through his post-comics career as a fine artist, commercial illustrator, and teacher. Krigstein is renowned as one of the great innovators working within the commercial comics industry: his story about a Nazi commandant, "Master Race," published by the legendary EC Comics, is studied in college courses and considered one of the most fascinating formal experiments in comics. This book reproduces many of Krigstein's comics stories as well as many of his commercial assignments (such as the line of paperback covers he did for the reissues of Joyce Cary's novels) as well as his fine art paintings. Most of this work has never been seen outside its original publication. Most of the comics stories are obscure and have not been reprinted since their initial publication (mostly from the '50s) and his fine art has only appeared in galleries and exhibitions.

Krigstein (1919-1990), classically trained in Fine Art, was a Brooklyn-born painter who was one of the first practitioners who approached comics with the respect, integrity, and psychological depth of a serious artist. After an innovative and contentious decade, he was forced to abandon the field due to its narrow-minded and formulaic tendencies, which continue to this day. This first of two volumes traces Krigstein's groundbreaking comic-book work at Hillman, Atlas, DC, and EC, as well as his parallel development as an illustrator and painter.

5 out of 5 stars More than EC.......2005-02-01

Bernard Krigstein is most famous as one of the pantheon of extraordinary artists working for EC comics in the Fifties. However, this volume shows that EC was just one facet of this comics genius. This is a thorough biography, plus a wonderful analysis of Krigstein's life's work. This book, along with the companion volume "B.Krigstein: Comics," belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in comics history and sequential art.

5 out of 5 stars An artist in full.......2003-08-21

Greg Sadowski's biography of Bernard Krigstein, who possessed one of the most innovative minds---and pens---in comic book history, is a labor of love that is revealed as such on every page. From the high quality of the paper to the superb graphic design, from the sharp reproductions to the text that details his life, career, and reputation, B. KRIGSTEIN is a book that would grace any library. But it covers not only his comic book work. For here are also his many book illustrations, his World War II field sketches and paintings, his canvases and gallery works (among them portraits of his wife and family), urban vignettes and rural landscapes, even greeting cards, gum cards,
and advertising art. He was truly a modern-day Renaissance man, fully deserving of this highly focused, incredibly beautiful tribute. There have been many innovators in comic art over the decades (George Herriman and Art Spiegelman, to name just two), but none of them had Krigstein's range of powers and depth of creativity. His was a name that the centuries will remember.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great forgotten comic artist.......2003-02-12

This book will show you all the reasons for my title. Mr.Krigstein was truly a master at pacing and design on the comic page.
His art speaks far better than I can write so I'll just tell you if you buy this book you will not be disapointed.
The comic Master Race alone is worth the price of this book.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely essential for comic fans and artists of all types.......2002-05-18

the world was not ready for the work of bernie krigstein when he hit his stride in comics in the early 50's. a fine artist at heart, he became obsessed with the art form of comics and the possibilities that it held. few were attempting to take comics so seriously and in those days, they were just above pornography as far as respectability goes. he produced some brilliant works, but the book reveals just how much of a struggle it was to get these masterworks in print. the artwork speaks for itself, but i was really drawn into the text which details the inner workings of the comics machine of the 1940's-50's and how ridiculously it was run. although he begged and pleaded with management, he was never able to bring a story out further than 9 pages, and had to threaten leaving in order to even ink his own work rather than have it butchered by someone else. considering the roadblocks that constantly stood in front of him, it was amazing that he was able to experiment as much as he did.

among his more famous experiments was panel subdivision, breaking away from the standard 6-9 panels per page and, in one instance, producing some 75 panels in 6 pages. this brought an entirely new dimension to comics, introducing the break down of time and space within the page. he also brought a style of cinematography that was never thought of in comics before that must have influenced filmmakers years down the road.

greg sadowski has assembled a truly staggering biography. he had direct access to the artists collection and publishes for the first time many works that have never seen the light of day. rare artist photostats of pencil artwork that went on to be mutiliated by someone else's inks. original panels that were ordered by management to be covered up with different artwork. exhaustive research with coworkers, friends and family, as well as unbelievably wise words from the artist himself given in various interviews many years ago that gives a definitive look into the workings of this man's artistic mind.

it must [stink] being the pioneer, you never get to see the fruits of your labor. but all who charged through the door that b krigstein kicked down acknowledge him as the man who started it all.

THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL FOR ANY COMIC ART FAN, AS WELL AS ANY ARTIST OF ANY TYPE. IT IS VERY INSPIRING AND IS A GREAT READ.

          Book Description

The definitive (and first) collection of B. Krigstein's comics.

Following last year's critically and commercially successful biography/art book, B. Krigstein, is this companion volume, a full-color collection of 36 complete stories, representing the best work throughout the career of the most innovative comic book artist of his generation. Never before has the evolution of a comics artist been so extensively presented; B. Krigstein: Comics is the ultimate testament to the commitment and technical mastery that Bernard Krigstein brought to bear in his attempt to legitimize a then-ridiculed medium.

Editor Greg Sadowski has selected and restored 36 stories from 1949-56, tracing Krigstein's respective tenures at the publishers Rae Herman, Hillman, Atlas, DC, and EC. The meticulous restoration is of particular note because, unlike the superficially slick four-color comics of today, ten-cent comics of the '40s and '50s were notorious for their poor color registration, cheap paper, and shoddy printing, all of which worked against Krigstein's complex design and subtle draftsmanship. Here, for the first time, his artistry is not compromised by inadequate production methods: every panel of every story has been painstakingly cleaned and color-corrected. Smothered for generations, Krigstein's compositions are finally presented in the same spirit as he originally conceived them. Fifteen stories, culled from every stage of his career, have been entirely recolored for this volume by Marie Severin, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished color artists in the history of the medium, who colored Krigstein's work at EC in the '50s.

Most of this work has been out of print and unavailable for nearly five decades, and will be a revelation to those who know Krigstein solely from his celebrated and justly famous work at EC.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL OVERVIEW OF A GENIUS AT WORK.......2005-02-08

This companion volume to "B. Krigstein Vol. 1" is excellent throughout. My only disappointment is that his horror work for Atlas is a tad under-represented. That minor quibble aside, this book is a gem. It shows just how thoroughly Krigstein understood sequential art and storytelling, and how he changed it forever. Superior production values as well. This is a great book and I heartily endorse it.

The book makes a great argument, albeit unintented, on the ill effects of immigration on second and third generation ethnic Americans (yes, some insist on this "ethnic" fantasy). If your field is Sociology or Anthropology, you may find this book informative with respect to the self-mutilatory social
practices of those Americans who do not feel fully accepted.

I don't know what type of Italian/American family other people grew up in, but I grew up in a loving family with wonderful warm traditions, holidays filled with love, humor and great food, songs sung in Italian, stories of the old country and a door that was always open with the coffee on the stove...I found none of that nostalgia here. What I did find was the stereotypical pictures, sayings and gestures that unfortunately television portrays Italian/Americans to be. If you are looking for a book that not only will translate swears from Italian, but will show you pictures of the gestures as well, or teaches you the correct Italian response to someone farting, this one is for you.

What a crock you are Predone/Shrug reviewer - I'll refrain from slamming you on whatever field in medicine you are from...likely, as most non-radiolgoy physicians are, you are highly jealous of the many amazing things interventional radiologists can now do and wish you had thought longer about your career choice while in med school (too bad for you). I can tell you from personal experience, Dr. Caridi is a fantastic physician, very people oriented, and great with the patients who are very appreciative of his work. I feel sorry for you and your shortcomings that you have to personally bash someone who is as accomplished as Dr. Caridi.

By the way, great read, funny...people who don't take things or themselves too seriously (unlike the "Shrug" reviewer) will thoroughly enjoy the read.

              Book Description

This classic of film criticism, long considered invaluable for its eloquent study of a problematic period in film history, is now substantially updated and revised by the author to include chapters beyond the Reagan era and into the twenty-first century. For the new edition, Robin Wood has written a substantial new preface that explores the interesting double context within which the book can be read-that in which it was written and that in which we find ourselves today. Among the other additions to this new edition are a celebration of modern "screwball" comedies like My Best Friend's Wedding, and an analysis of '90s American and Canadian teen movies in the vein of American Pie, Can't Hardly Wait, and Rollercoaster. Also included are a chapter on Hollywood today that looks at David Fincher and Jim Jarmusch (among others) and an illuminating essay on Day of the Dead.

              Book Description

In this series of provocative, interrelated essays, Robin Wood analyzes 1970s films affected by the ideological crises in America precipitated by Watergate and the Vietnam war, and assembles his much-discussed but hiterto scattered and inaccessible work on the modern horror film. The book also analyzes the complex and problematic films of Brian De Palma, attacks the 1980s fantasy cinema of Lucas and Spielberg, examines the work of women directors, and celebrates the films of Scorcese and Michael Cimino.

1 out of 5 stars a historically important but dumb book.......2004-03-19

Wood is one of the most important film reviewers out there. He was essential to the application of film analysis to horror films and provided something of a language to discuss the unique films of the 70s. If you're interested in film criticism as a field, you ought to read this book simply because of Wood's historical importance.

That said, however, what he actually says is pretty dumb. His classification of films as "incoherent," "progressive," or "reactionary" is pretty random. For example, he derides The Omen as reactionary (which primarly means supportive of a traditional view of the family), completely denying the confusion created by putting pure evil in the form of an infant. His ideas about an ideal society, based on a peculiar form of radical feminism, are given a focus that overrides specifics of particular films he claims to be analyzing. And that form of feminism (in which promiscuous, gay men are the ideal of masculinity) isn't something everyone would consider an appropriate form of feminism. I consider myself a pretty strong feminist, but I see his ideals as a wrong turn at best. He's not always wrong (his analysis of the films with Debra Winger, where the "liberated" woman finds happiness by finding a good man, are appropriate), but even when I agree with him, I feel like it's mere coincidence that we hold the same position.

Above it says that people who bought this book also bought Carol Clover's "Men, Women, and Chainsaws." That book is infinitely more thoughtful and thought provoking, though it's focus is more specifically on horror films. Wood focuses on horror, but not exclusively.

                          Book Description

Chess is a game of decisions. In addition to deciding which move to play and which plan to adopt, players must also make practical decisions about how to use their clock time and whether to use intuition rather than trying to calculate every line to a finish.

This is the first book devoted to this fundamental area of the chess struggle. Viacheslav Eingorn draws upon his vast experience to provide guidance on how to weigh the various factors in positions and decide on the best course of action. He examines many practical examples and explains how the critical decisions were made, and investigates whether they were correct. By following Eingorn on his voyage of discovery, the reader will gain a greater understanding of decision-making and develop an enhanced feel for the harmonious use of intuition and calculation.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional middlegame work.......2005-03-13

I believe the Gambit middlegame series may have begun with Secrets of Modern Chess Stategy. Although Watson's magnum opus has been justly lauded, I have found many of the subsequent books by overseas authors to be equally stimulating. In this book V Eingorn - an experienced and respected grandmaster from Ukraine - has written what amounts to a wide-ranging middlegame manual. It is based on his games and experience at or near the top of world chess over a couple of decades.
The book is based around annotated games. I have found the way to get the most out of these middlegame books is to find the bare score of the game on my computer database, and play through the moves while reading the text. Afterwards I look up other games from the same opening on the database. My experience with this study method is that it has broadened my opening repertoire - I easily become intrigued by variations I scarcely knew existed previously.
For an example, I starting following Eingorn-Onishchuk, Cuxhaven 1994. This was a semi-slav where Black varied from normal lines on move 11 (with 11...Rg8). As Eingorn comments, "when black gets fed up with the complex theoretical debate about this line, he has several ways to deviate." Now I have seen a number of semi-slavs when the routine 11...Bb7 was played, so this game was a useful reminder of different possibilities. Later I found other games with ...Rg8 on the database, including Shirov and Kramnik playing with the black pieces.
Naturally consulting a database only works if the game is there. The material in Eingorn's book is all original, so some of the games don't seem to have appeared in the public domain before. In order to play through Eingorn-Vakhidov, Tashkent 1983, I had to revert to the old-fashioned board and set. Not such a big deal, truth be told, as I do enjoy working on a normal board. The reward for this "effort" was that Eingorn explained a novel system he had used (against the King's Indian Defense)where a simple plan by white snuffed out all black counterplay. Despite having castled queenside, at one moment white plays the move 18 a4, which is a move I would never have considered. Eingorn's explanation of this key move was truly enlightening, and sure enough, in subsequent play the blocked queenside left black helpless.
