This ýbooký is totally useless!.......2004-06-25
I was really disappointed when I open the package and saw this book, from the Gardner's Series. It definitely doesn't worth a penny. From the 100 pages, 80 is just a bunch of paper for you to draw! Besides, the storyboards examples have no explanations about how they were planned. This "book" is totally useless.
Works for me.......2002-11-17
A book for sketching story ideas. I have been looking for a book of this kind. Perfect for what I needed.
Finally a Sketchbook for Animators.......2002-10-24
I have used my sketchbook to draw out various story Ideas. Excellent book. I love it.
High price pack of paper........2002-04-16
Gardner's Sketchbook is just that a book for YOU to sketch in. The entire text of the book is comprised of only the captions at the bottom of of storyboard illustrations which are only on 16 pages of the book. Instead of buying this book I would go with "The Art of the Storyboard: Storyboarding for Film, TV, and Animation" by John Hart. It is priced the same as this book but it is a more informative text. This book only gives two example templetes one for storyboarding (which can be found along with many other variations on the web at several animation sites) the other for character design (a blank page with the heading of "Charater Design"). This book should be priced as a pack of paper about $[money].
It's not e book.......2001-12-25
It's not a book , it's only white paper

Book Description
Iman's emergence in 1975 sparked an upheavel in cultural identity that continues today, and her first book is a gloriously entertaining hybrid essay on the cultural-cum-political power of good looks.
A quarter century of the most famous photographs by Helmut Newton, Steven Meisel, Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, Bruce Weber, Scavullo, David Bailey, Nick Knight, and many others are contextualized by well-known essayists, a chorus of celebrity contributions, and Iman's own take on her much-mythologized career. The book's outrageous pop design--by graphic designers Barnbrook Studios--makes it plain that this is not just one woman's success story. I Am Iman captures the funny, infuriating, and often absurd validation of black and ethnic looks in a beauty industry where billions of dollars--and the self-image of women everywhere--are on the line.
Peeks behind the curtain and scintillating interviews are courtesy of feminist critic bell hooks, Interview editor Ingrid Sischy, model and manager Bethann Hardison, and such celebrities as Cindy Crawford, Yves St. Laurent, Naomi Campbell, Bruce Weber, Tyra Banks, and many more. With graphic design featuring gatefolds, diecuts, and other interactive elements, as well as specially commissioned, never-before-seen images by Annie Leibowitz, Ellen Von Unwerth, Sante D'Orazio, and Michel Comte, this book is an assemblage worthy of any fashionista's dream.

Interesting pictures. Very few stories. I was hoping for a better book from IMAN
Iman.......2005-03-06
This book, although brief, is a better than average book by a model.
Iman adds more than just the basics; she provides her insights into what it means to her to be a black model as opposed to how society views it.
It should not be expected to be an in-depth biography. Iman describes important events in her life: her early life, leaving her country, entering the modeling world. She does not tell many minor stories or go into excruciating details about why she feels the way she does about certain things or why specific people were chosen to add to her book.
This book is that of an artist. The comments from friends and colleagues add to the pages and they way they are displayed is artistic and grabbing.
The photographs, many which are nude or "artistic nudes," are beautiful and abundant.
Overall, this is a book that people interested in models should read.
A living Legend.......2004-12-01
I loved this book, and it contains amazing photographs of a beautiful woman.
She is a legend and it's easy to see why...
A+++
She Is Iman.......2003-07-14

This is one of my favorite books. Visually exotic, it brings out the woman we know as Iman. I truly has some of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen. Definitely worth every penny.
As a Somali, I'm very proud of everything she does, which are all honourable work. So maybe I'm baised. Buy the book and see it for yourself. This woman rocks!
I Am Iman.......2003-02-04
All pictures - few words. This is the book for people who look. If you like to read, it's not the book for you.

This film reference covers 646 silent motion pictures, starting with Eadweard Muybridge's initial motion photography experiments in 1877 and even including The Taxi Dancer (1996). Among the genres included are classics, dramas, Westerns, light comedies, documentaries and even poorly produced early pornography. Masterpieces such as Joan the Woman (1916), Intolerance (1916) and Faust (1926) can be found, as well as rare titles that have not received critical attention since their original releases.

We needed more books from him . . ........2004-11-16
Sadly, Robert Klepper died in 2000, at the age of 32. A very nice fellow and an important film historian. Do pick up this worthwhile book, and mourn the fact that there will be no more from him.
Buy this book!!!.......2003-10-10
I bought this book last year and love it and use it all the time. I get films from libraries all over the country and look up the movies that come in. I bring it with me if I am going somewhere that I will be awhile and read each review. It has a permanent place on my coffee table. If you love silent films, this book is a must.
Back-story to the silents...........2003-06-30
I have owned "Silent Films, 1877-1996" for two years, and use it as a constant reference. (If you are a fan of TCM "Silent Sunday" or are a fan of silent movies and would like a guide to watching or purchasing silent film, this is the first reference to which I turn.) This does not cover absolutely every silent film, but there have been very few which I did not find information upon here. "Silent Films" also covers actors, directors, and other cinematographical information. The price tag is high, but for the silent movie buff it is indeed worth the price. I journal my silent movie viewings on its pages to keep a record. "Silent Films, 1877-1996" has gone from investment to treasure.
labor of love.......2003-06-24
Robert Klepper has a remarkable love and knowledge of silent film. His understanding of the historical place of any movie he reviews is impressive and thoughtful. The book is a standing resource for any film enthusiast. In watching these films some of our favorite practices are to look for scenes that more modern films either steal (or pay omage to - depending on your thinking) and to pay attention to stunts that no actor or actress will ever have to duplicate in a more advanced film age. These are things that Robert Klepper also makes notice of and shares with his readers. I find his rating system to be reliable to my own standards and his humor to be very welcome - though I think some readers might miss some of it.
I do cherish this particular book and guard it heavily - no one is permited to borrow it. (I am usually pretty generous with my shelves.)
I assure you that the book is well worth the price -it is an excellent resource to the novice or the expert.

Timeless.......2002-03-21
This is the best index of silent film that I've ever seen. The reviews are bold independent and informative, if not always completely objective, Mr. Klepper is not afraid to have an opinion. This is a reference that I keep going back to.

wonderful edition well worth it.......2007-06-12
Included is an 8 page arrangement for piano and organ including pedal notation. Printing is dark and pages large and well spaced. I'm still learning this piece. The version I learned previously included only few verses an edit from Cantata 147 in simplified notation. This version has more voicings so it's harder for me to play but it sounds lovely. I will be busy with this for a while.

Concordia really puts lots of craftmanship into its editions. This copy is no exception. Wonderful to play and sing from.

Informative.......2004-11-27
I was given this book and found it very interesting. It has information about Baroque music, Bach, his music, and the two Cantatas included on the CD. All in all, it was very informative, but it can be boring.
Book Description
A unique collection of 46 superb compositions by members of the Bach family.

Doom, the video game in which you navigate a dungeon in the first person and messily lay waste to everything that crosses your path, represented a milestone in many areas. It was a technical landmark, in that its graphics engine delivered brilliant performance on ordinary PC hardware. It was a social phenomenon, with individuals and companies hooking up networks specifically for Doom tournaments and staying up for days to blast away on them (well before the Internet went big-time). The game's publisher, id Software, used an unusual shareware marketing strategy (give away the first levels, charge for the more advanced ones) that worked very well. On top of it all, the gore-filled game raised serious questions about decency in products meant for use by school-age kids. Masters of Doom explores the Doom phenomenon, as well as the lives and personalities of the two men behind it: John Carmack and John Romero.
This book manages, for the most part, to keep clear of the breathless techno-hagiography style that characterizes many books with similar subjects. He tells the story of Carmack, Romero, and id--which includes far more than Doom and its successors--in novel style, and he's done a good job of keeping the action flowing and the characters' motivations clear. Some of the quoted passages of dialog sound like idealized reconstructions that probably never came from the lips of real people, but this is an entertaining and informative book, of interest to anyone who's let rip with a nail gun. --David Wall
Topics covered: The biographies of John Carmack and John Romero, and of their company, id Software. The development and marketing of all major id games (including Wolfenstein, Doom, Doom II, and Quake) get lavish attention.
Book Description
Masters of Doom is the amazing true story of the Lennon and McCartney of video games: John Carmack and John Romero. Together, they ruled big business. They transformed popular culture. And they provoked a national controversy. More than anything, they lived a unique and rollicking American Dream, escaping the broken homes of their youth to produce the most notoriously successful game franchises in history—Doom and Quake— until the games they made tore them apart. This is a story of friendship and betrayal, commerce and artistry—a powerful and compassionate account of what it's like to be young, driven, and wildly creative.

4.9 stars!! Almost perfect.......2007-08-14
My ONLY complaint and this is super picky, is that I wished they would have gone into more depth on the technical aspects of Doom and especially quake. I realize this isn't a technical book but it still would have been neat to read.
Overall, this is an awesome book.

GREAT MATERIAL.......2007-05-13
I own this Book for two years already and I must have read it about 5 times from cover to cover! It's a great piece of Art and should be read by anyone that lived in the yearly 90's and that had the chance to play the very first hit's of ID Software (the first Quake and the first Doom).
The Book is very well written. It brought me back so many memories! That I though I had forgot. But the best is that, by reading the book, you get to know how everything you loved was developed, implemented and created. And "why" certain thing were done the way they were.
It traces a complete Novel from when Carmack and Romero were kids from the Empire that ID Software build upon Carmack genius and passion for FPS and Romero killer business and marketing instincts. It's good to remind that although ID Software are credited to the "Two Johns", all the ID staff is also part of the pillar. And they are all mentioned in the course of the book (many left the company in the middle of many projects but they were accuratly mentioned).
The book tells the story from the very beginning, until the pre-realease of DOOM3. It covers every aspect you could want to know.
As a plus, you can keep in mind that Carmack and Romero had to sign a contract stating that the Book doesn't have a single line of untruth been spoke. Random House could only publish the book after that. So it is all true.
And there you have it! All the sinister and stunning truth about how one of the biggest pop Icons of the 90's was created... and still lives on.
Masterful.......2007-02-26
I bought this book after seeing the wonderful "Make Love not Warcraft" episode on South Park, the show that keeps mature people like me updated. There are those who live in the world, and there are those who live in the world of video games. And then there are those who live in the world of books about those who live in the world of video games. I'm one of those, apparently, because I couldn't put this book down. The last video game I played on my computer was Wayout, back in 1987, and this book mentioned the game on page 158. Given my limited knowledge of the gaming world, the book seemed thorough, and provided a twice-removed voyeur a peek at the fascinating, seminal years of this industry.
David Kushner did a great job researching and writing "Masters of Doom", a book that focuses on the experiences of John Carmack and John Romero, whose collaboration climaxed with the development and publication of Doom. He spent hours - days - weeks interviewing the key players and then remarkably translated that information into an insider's view of this world. It's a play-by-play and blow-by-blow account of their separate early years, then their meeting and half-decade of collaboration, followed by rivalry and falling-out, then their separate endeavors with "id" and "ion storm" software companies. Much of this happens in the unlikely locales of Shreveport, Madison and Dallas during the 1990s, although the book's materials go into the early 2000s. Kushner puts you right there with them, as close to a play script as a book can get. I would highly recommend "Masters of Doom" to anyone who wants a little insight into the landscape of this world and these two pivotal, fascinating individuals.
If I have any criticism, it's that the book is very calculated, and possibly exaggerated, to fit a particular genre: that of the gee-whiz, look at those fascinating, wacky geniuses. It's an idealization of the early "visionaries" of the PC and internet world, along the lines of "Hackers" and "Where Wizards Stay Up Late," and it tends to put extreme emphasis on the special role of individuals in that process. The two Johns were part of a big industry that had many talented individuals, but was driven by technological developments and capital. Like other developments, from the steam engine forward, this world included some interesting and often contradictory, driven individuals who sometimes either succumbed to, or insulated themselves from, the personal trappings, rewards and punishments associated with their roles. Kushner's thesis, which may well be true, is that John R succumbed and John C insulated, and thus we have the material for a gripping story.
Entertaining, Easy Read.......2006-11-10
"The Two Johns" (Carmack and Romero) had been described as the Lennon and McCartney of video games, and I think that's a great moniker, especially after reading this book. Written in an engaging, easy-to-follow style, the reader is taken inside the environment and motivation for many decisions and inspirations for why they did what they did. I found that fascinating!
Each accomplished in their own right, I don't think they really appreciated each other's talents and abilities until after they split up. It would be interesting to see what they can create with each other, now that they are older, financially successful and are driven (possibly?) by different things.
At about 300 pages, it's a very entertaining read for anyone interested or involved with the games industry; others may find the interpersonal dynamics of a young startup insightful and enlightening.
A wonderful book.......2006-08-24
The book was a brilliant read for me from 2 stand points. First as a gamer, it was really interesting to see all the backroom dynamics that went into producing my favourite games of my adolescent years. Wolf 3D, Doom, Quake... All the talent, hardwork, egos, ups and downs.... The author does a really good job of bringing the past alive; it's as if you were there watching the scene play out
From an organizational/ business stand point it was just intriguing. From the outside, we see the final product and we make sweeping statements about its success (or failure) yet the book shows us that there were so many more things going behind the scenes than we actually could have imagined.
Book Description
When we first met Joe Meter in Subir Chowdhury’s The Power of Six Sigma, he had been laid off from his job at American Burger. After a transformational lunch that same day with former colleague and friend Larry Hogan, Joe was converted to the power of Six Sigma, a methodology that increases customer satisfaction and dramatically cuts costs. In The Power of Design for Six Sigma, it is several years later and the tables have turned. Now it is Joe’s turn to inspire Larry, who is disillusioned at work and wants to turn in his resignation—that is, until his conversation with his old friend.
Over coffee, Joe explains to Larry why Design for Six Sigma, or DFSS, is the only way to reach new heights of success. “Implementing Six Sigma can only take a company so far,” Joe explains. “Organizations that want to reach the next level of efficiency need to adopt a program called Design for Six Sigma.” Learn why DFSS is important across all departments, all levels, and all functions in an organization. DFSS is about creating products and services that are designed with the customer in mind—about designing things the right way, the first time.
Customer Reviews:
Oh no not again.......2006-03-04
This book is as silly and stupid as his last DFSS book "Design for Six Sigma". Don't buy it, don't borrow it! If you are looking for a serious book try "Design for Six Sigma: Innovation for Enhanced Competitiveness " by Gregory Watson instead.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2004-05-20
When last we saw Joe Meter, the fictitious hero of Subir Chowdhury's last Six Sigma book (The Power of Six Sigma), he was looking for work. His friend Larry Hogan introduced him to Six Sigma, which made Joe a huge success. According to the story, which is a novelistic construct for conveying business advice, now Joe is going to tutor Larry on a more advanced form of Six Sigma, one that delves into the very process of system design. This "meta-Six Sigma" appears to be a natural evolution of the basic Six Sigma approach, namely, to uncover the root causes of defects, inefficiency and customer dissatisfaction - and to fix them as part of the intrinsic design of the company and its processes. This book covers the design concept, but not the initial details of Six Sigma itself. Here, Chowdhury again explains a complex subject in a lucid manner, if you don't mind an alphabet soup of acronyms. We strongly recommend this book for anyone in management, or anyone who is experiencing a change initiative.
DFSS For Dummies.......2003-06-10
This book explains the advantages of investing in DFSS; it emphasizes that stopping at Six Sigma is not good enough because one can not go beyond 5 Sigma. Subir Chowdhury narrates the DFSS process in a very refreshing and anecdotal way. If you like reading stories and upshots, this is the book for you. Prior knowledge of Six Sigma is not required. This book only gives a high-level overview of how DMADV or DMEDDI or IDDOV was applied by a restaurant chain. I would recommend buying another thick book to get all the nitty gritty details like QFD or Robust Design Optimization because the method is as important as the result
The big picture of Design for Six Sigma.......2003-05-04
This book is not so much a how to do Design for Six Sigma, but why. It is a very easy read with an entertaining style. I keep copies around to loan out, and occasionally to refer to.
Its greatest asset for me was providing a big picture that helped explain what DFSS is to those who don't yet know the details. If you try to explain DFSS to people by jumping into the details of how to do it, they often won't have the patience to hear you out. This book helped me answer the most basic questions like "What do all the different DFSS programs have in common?".
Because it is such an easy and entertaining read, it can be used to generate enthusiasm in the team. It is definitely not a dry technical book.
Be prepared to order more books that give more detail on how to do DFSS.
Don't buy this book, borrow it........2003-04-15
I read this book as an introduction to the concept of Design for Six Sigma. My motivation to do this was that my company has begun implementing the management technique. Like Mr. Chowdhury's preceding book The Power of Six Sigma, this book has some serious flaws.
First of all, despite being a better-written book than the previous "Power" book, it is still hampered by a jumble of unrelated examples and metaphors. In this installment the master has become the disillusioned student and his student has become the confident master.
This book does provide a basic overview of Design for Six Sigma, but once attain is a cleverly disguised attempt to make money by exploiting the latest management buzz.
This books is slightly longer that The Power of Six Sigma. However, the author's writing style continues to distract you from easily learning the information.
My recommendation is to check it out from the library if you really want to read the book for the basic introduction to Design for Six Sigma.
