Book Description
Latin American artist Gego (1912–1994) produced a range of line-based abstract work, including drawings, prints, and wire sculptures. Focusing on a rare series of monotypes from the early 1950s, drawings and prints, and “drawings without paper” and “tejeduras” (woven paper pieces) of the late 1970s and 1980s, this fascinating book traces Gego’s exploration of line and space.
Gego used lines as conceptual and visual tools to create in-between spaces within her works. Whether drawing lines on paper or projecting them into space, the artist sought to “make visible the invisible.” She believed that line could express what is not physically present in nature––including thought, intuition, and emotions. By manipulating the density of the lines or by interrupting them, she brought light, shadow, and feeling into her linear works.

Pierre Thomas Karkau lives and works in Düsseldorf (Germany) as a fashion photographer. His first book "Models Secret" was published 2001.
Customer Reviews:
Skip this year's subscription to FHM and Maxxim.......2006-06-21
I picked this item up purely out of interest to see what Karkau had done. My reason for a rating of only 3 stars is based on the content relative to the other works I have in my library (Newton, Mapplethorpe, Bisang, May, etc.). What Karkau has done is present the erotic without slipping into the pornographic. He does it well. However, comparing his work to Peter Gorman or Marc Baptiste, I find a lot of the poses obviously contrived. The key word here is "obviously". These seemed to conflict with the raw aspect of the photos themselves. It presents as a conflict between glamour and casual nude photography. Perhaps this is what was intended. A sort of shooting for Diesel at home. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. A buy if you are an FHM or Maxxim fan.

Not content to chronicle just a collection of cartoons, this retrospective includes Wilson's wry, illustrated essays on such topics as childhood fears and human tourists in space. A unique creator, Wilson straddles humor markets ranging from art enthusiasts to sci-fi junkies with offbeat aplomb.

Customer Reviews:
A good basic primer for aspiring medieval musicians.......2003-02-06
I became hooked on medieval music when a friend dragged me to an Anonymous 4 concert in 2001. My basic background was classical, but while there is a wealth of works out there on classical music, there is very little for the tyro regarding the medieval era. Mary Devlin explores a number of different approaches to understanding the medieval era, starting with a chapter outlining theories about the history of music in general.
She then moves on to outline the use of pitch and harmony in the Middle Ages, then tempo and rhythm, then voices and instruments. As there was a vast shift in style and structure from the early Middle Ages through the classical and modern periods, it's virtually impossible for a newcomer to the medieval period to jump in with no background. Books for beginners in the field, however, are conspicuous by their absence! Someone recommended this book to me - and I felt so much better informed after reading it!
I don't agree with everything the author says, but nonetheless this book has proven invaluable to me. If you're a student in the field, or even if you're an accomplished performer, you should find this book interesting. Take what you need, and leave the rest.
Understandable, affordable.......2003-02-06
Sorry, I don't agree with the previous reviewer at all. Yes, there is New Age philosophy in this book, but the author points out that what we call New Age is actually very "old age," had not yet been totally expunged in the Middle Ages, and thus affected the music composed during that era. As for her knowledge of medieval society, for that I cannot speak, but a quick look through my copy of this book revealed no mention of a "schoolyard" in medieval Germany.
The author does, however, evince an extensive knowledge of the subject at hand: medieval music. As a beginning student of medieval music back in 2000, I found this book to be comprehensive enough to explain all the basics and to put me in touch with the various forms of music in vogue from roughly 1100 to 1600. Furthermore, she explains it in a conversational tone, outlining her own explorations of the subject, and I actually found myself reading it on into the night instead of yawning and putting it down after three pages - the way I did with more scholarly works on the subject.
I learned about pitch, harmony, rhythm, the history of music in general, and medieval performance technique - and the next time I attended a workshop on the subject, I got a lot more out of it because I had read a book that wasn't overly specific and which was easy to read. And, yes, there was some New Age philosophy which I didn't really understand. But books are subjective, and one doesn't have to accept everything an author says to appreciate his or her work.
Furthermore, while most books on medieval music have price tags which are far beyond my means, this one was more than reasonable. If you want basic background and some interesting opinions on medieval music, written in a readable style at a reasonable price, this is the book for you.
Don't bother.......2002-12-23
This is NOT a scholarly work. The author mixes quotes from reputable scholars with mostly unfounded surmise. The main topic of the book is not medieval music but New Age philosophy.
The author's lack of knowledge of the basic conditions of medieval life is immense. For instance, she refers to a "schoolyard" with children playing in it in medieval Germany.

Good Intro.......2007-01-10
This is an easy to read and use book and a great activity to do with your kids, particularly if they have any speech difficulties. You can get started with a sock puppet if you like, so it's also inexpensive.
Great Book.......2005-09-05
I just got the book and already I am starting to get the hang of it. I am nowhere near good enough to take it on the road, but this book will give you the tools to feel confedent right from the start.
One of my favorite and FUNNIEST how to do "vent" books!.......2001-09-05
As someone who got interested in ventriloquism (and eventually dumped a 20 year newspaper career to work with WOODEN dummies) I was often frustrated reading how-to-do-ventriloquism books. Most were either amazingly boring, unknowingly pompous, or filled with cutsey-comments that seemingly padded an explanation of what I believe is actually a relatively easy "art" (if you are nutty enough to practice in front of a mirror until you perfect the "hard" letters). This is one of my FAVORITE now to do ventriloquism books -- and to this day it remains the funniest. I still do a routine in my show based on the structure of one of Paul Stadelman's classic bits (I have long since replaced the actual jokes). The late Paul Stadelman was a "classic" and I believe underrated vent who performed, taught and was on television for many years. And this book is worth it's price just for the zippy routines with Stadelman and his dummy Windy Higgins. These don't go on and on with long set-ups but are punchy, quick pay-off bits (and if Stadelman used a pun it was seldom groan-inducing). Stadelman was clearly more influenced by vaudeville and comedy teams than by other ventriloquists (which I think is GOOD). At the least these routines help readers understand routine construction and setup-joke structure. The late, wonderful Col. Bill Boley (another performer who deserved a higher national profile since there are zillions of ventriloquists running around doing bits of his published work and others who painstakingly "emulate" his original routines) was the only other ventriloquist whose published routines came CLOSE to doing this. And to TEACH you vent? This book has it all. It gives you the substitute letters (to say for the hard letters) and words to practice to perfect them. It also tells you how to make a puppet out of your hand, gives you performing tips, has some great ventriloquism-related photos, and and list of suppliers and organizations (some of this is outdated now). If someone was interested in "vent" and had this book, George Schindler's Ventriloquism: Magic With Your Voice and the in-its-own-class Maher Studios correspondence course they'd have it all. Plus, if they have this book they're going to also have some BIG laughs while reading it. Paul Stadelman is truly ventriloquism's unsung hero!

An awesome book!.......2005-04-29
Ventriloquism Made Easy, by Kolby King, is a well written book, which "covers it all"! This is a MUST-HAVE for anyone who is seriously considering taking up ventriloquism! Kolby takes you through the basics of ventriloquism, in a well written, fun-filled book, that is WELL WORTH READING!!
Save Your Money, Folks!.......2004-10-15
This book teaches ventriloquism about as well as a three-page pamphlet teaches nuclear physics. Sure, you will learn a trick or two, but I'd hate to perform with only this knowledge under my belt!
And why, WHY do some authors insist on injecting their personal religious beliefs into what are supposed to be secular works? Evangelize in a book written to that purpose, please! About 2000 years ago someone said something about praying quietly and privately in one's own room . . .
If you want to be a ventriloquist, there are plenty of sources far superior to this pap. Look for them.
not worth it.......2004-02-17
Has only a tiny section on the really important stuff about the hard letters. The rest is padding. I'm going to look for something more serious.
Great.......2003-01-29
I think that this book is great for beginers because it teaches basic stuff to advanced stuff. If there was anyone that was interested in becoming a ventriloquist this is the right book for you.
Great book for The Absolute Beginner.......2002-07-26
Cheery and breezy, this well written, easy to understand book takes you from your first exercises on how to talk without moving your lips, to dealing with the "problem letters" (W, P, B, M, and F) to advanced techniquies such as the distant voice and echoed voice, to writing your own scripts and preparing for performance. Along the way. Mr. King provides you with several routines that you can use to sharpen and refine your skills as well as advice on giving your best when performing. Highly recommended, indeed!

Book Description
"Highly readable. . .convincing. . .a must for academic collections and required reading for professionals seeking to maximize human performance and team productivity."
--Choice Magazine, Feb. 2002
What makes some teams achieve extraordinary outcomes, while other fall disappointingly short of the mark?
Frank LaFasto and Carl Larson have systematically explored that question for more than 20 years. In 1989, they published the best-selling book TeamWork; What Must Go Right/What Can Go Wrong, which reported the results of an in-depth study of some of the most successful teams in recent history and identified the eight characteristics of high performance teams.
When Teams Work Best
advances this groundbreaking research by probing more deeply inside the workings of hundred of teams—some effective and some faltering. For over a decade, the authors collected and analyzed responses from more than 6,000 team members and leaders across a variety of industries, in both public and private sectors, to find out exactly what conditions help or hinder teams in achieving their goals. The voices of these team members—often eloquent, always enlightening—are heard through the quotations that appear throughout the book.
With extensive experience coaching and consulting with teams, LaFasto and Larson bring a valuable real-life perspective to their examination of the rich and often intriguing complexity behind effective teamwork. This book goes far beyond the theoretical to offer proven, practical advice that team members and leaders can easily apply to bring out the very best in their own teams.
When teams work best, the work is rewarding, outcomes inspiring and accomplishments abounds.

6,000 Team Members! 6,000 Team Members! 6,000 Team Members!.......2007-01-11
I had this as a text book for an organizational leadership class at the master's degree level. The material is repetitive in its chapter presentations, but the core elements are still good. I just didn't find it to be reader-friendly. For some reason the authors feel compelled to remind the reader every few paragraphs that the responses of more than "6,000 team members" form the basis of their conclusions. I understood that point based on the title and didn't need to be reminded on each page. The book reads as if someone went straight to print with their research paper, rather than making it an engaging read. By chapter 3 I no longer cared about the value of the content, I just hated the book. Seriously. You've been warned.
Not bad, but not great........2006-05-01
This book was O.K. but not great. The information could fit in ten to twenty pages - as in a pamphlet.
The best book on teams.......2005-12-27
This is the best book on teams! If I could have given it more stars I would. A definite MUST read. This will be your reference bible on teams from now onward.
Comprehensive, Practical.......2002-09-16
Teams are everywhere-in all kinds of organizations. Some work beautifully to produce wonderful successes; others are miserable failures. Why? The authors conducted research with over 6,000 team members and discovered five factors that determine a team's success: collaboration, relationships, group processes, leadership, and the organizational environment. This book is a report of what they learned, loaded with plenty of advice for increasing team effectiveness.
After an introductory prologue, the book delivers five well-organized chapters that correspond to the factors of success. The first chapter explores what makes a good team member--abilities and behaviors that matter. What determines how collaborative someone will be in a team setting? The second chapter examines relationships among members of teams: what's most important, where are the greatest challenges, and how can you make it all work?
In the third chapter, the authors look into team problem solving. Included are the distinguishing factors of good problem-solving teams, dynamics and processes of solving problems and making decisions, and building systems that support results. Chapter four really digs into the team leader, reviewing six key dimensions of the role. This chapter alone is worth buying this book. Following the research-based model, the last chapter zeros in on the organizational environment. The authors evaluate management practices, structure and processes, and systems in an insightful look at how the environment affects team performance.
Each chapter is preceded by a one-page Snapshot that offers a valuable overview of the chapter. Two indexes and a half-dozen pages of notes add more value to this volume. Good flow, readable, and useful. Recommended as a good tool for team leaders, members, and encouragers in any organization.
A guide to the harnessing the power of cooperation.......2002-04-11
When Teams Work Best: 6,000 Team Members And Leaders Tell What It Takes To Succeed by Frank LaFasto (Senior Vice President of Organization Effectiveness for Cardinal health, Inc.) and Carl Larson (Professor of Human Communication, University of Denver) is a practical, "user friendly" guide to the harnessing the power of cooperation and teamwork for increased productivity and effectiveness. Individual chapters address what makes a good team member, what makes a good leader, problem solving methodologies, and how to best promote confidence and trust. When Teams Work Best is very highly recommended for anyone charged with the corporate responsibility for cultivating business group work skills!
