                      Book Description

Collecting handkerchiefs is one of the few affordable areas of collecting in which the collectible also takes up very little space. Most people have preconceived notions of what hankies arewhite cotton or linen square, decorated with a bit of lace or embroidery and are surprised and delighted with what they see in this bookcolor, pattern, and humor. Whats more, these hankies are a social history of their time, the 1940s and 1950s. With World War II, women became Rosie the Riveters, making their own money and enjoying their independence. The hankies in Handkerchiefs: A Collectors Guide, Volume 2, reflect this new equality with their bright, optimistic colors and subjects. New social conventions, such as road trips, barbecues, and the cocktail hour, which became the fabric of America in the decade after the war, were chronicled in handkerchiefs. This book brings out the collector in anyone who inherited hankies from a mother or grandmother, or who enjoys good design. There are no repeats from Volume 1 in the more than 600 new examples shown.

This collector's guide is full of good information, and the photos are phenomenal! I was looking for more history, I guess, but the book is exactly what the title claims. Well written and fun to read.

                      5 out of 5 stars Delightful Memories.......2005-10-19

While I am not a collector, I truly appreciated the artful display and extensive variety of handkerchiefs in this feature. It touched a chord from my childhood of memories of the influential women in my life (from relatives to the good Dominican nuns at school) and the delightful little "hankies" they all seemed to mysteriously keep tucked up their sleeves. How interesting to see the authors track the development of the various types and designs.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointment from page 1 to page 144........2003-03-10

You have to wonder if the author of this book had an editor. It is full of misinformation and was a big disappointment from beginning to end. Textiles were misnamed, flowers were identified wrong, price guide was completely unrealistic, the sizes of the hankies were misrepresented, and it lacked any history or information that a collector would be interested in. Many hanky categories were neglected or omitted entirely and most categories that were represented were incomplete and lacked history. I gave the book two stars only because I liked the photos of the hankies that were shown. Next time the author writes a book, she should stick with a subject she knows something about.

1 out of 5 stars Not for the serious hanky collector.......2002-09-25

Doesn't give a lot of info for the serious collector. Author basically shows off her collection that is not that varied, if she is a serious collector. Waste of my money.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the serious collector.......2002-06-26

This book can most accurately be described as simply an album of the author's own handkerchief collection. Despite the misleading title, there is no helpful information for the serious collector, i.e., research on the various periods, artists, techniques, types of collections, resources and organizations. Also missing is an explanation of the methodology used for dating and pricing.

The photography is presented without detail even when a detail is described in the cutline.

A more careful editing could have eliminated annoying grammatical and spelling errors.

                      4 out of 5 stars a new collectible.......2001-01-25

this book was fun...great photos...not too serious. really enjoyed it. terrific for anyone who is interested in starting to collect or wants to see some really unusual hankies.

Thank goodness Antwone Fisher's story has a happy ending--otherwise, his searing memoir would be nearly unbearable to read. His father was killed by a gunshot blast shortly before he was born in 1959; his 17-year-old mother gave him up for foster care. Unfortunately for Antwone, his foster mother was as successful at browbeating and demeaning her many wards as she was at lying to the Child Welfare authorities. His working-class African American neighborhood in Cleveland became purgatory for a sensitive, intelligent boy who quickly turned into a withdrawn underperformer at school. In Fisher's blow-by-blow account of his childhood, his sexual abuse at the hands of a female neighbor is hardly more horrifying than his foster mother's relentless cruelty--especially because respectable, churchgoing Mrs. Pickett justifies it all as due to the boy's wicked faults. Readers will be relieved when she dumps 15-year-old Antwone back at the Child Welfare office, even though he will endure homelessness and a scary spell of criminal employment, before an 11-year stint in the Navy provides him with a way forward. Grim though his tale is, Fisher displays throughout it the grit and stubborn integrity that kept him sane. He musters up some understanding (not forgiveness) for the dreadful Mrs. Pickett, and his eventual meeting with his burned-out mother is painfully poignant. He certainly deserves the beautiful wife and cute two-year-old daughter, cooking pancakes for him in the book's closing and redemptive scene. --Wendy Smith

                          Book Description

Baby Boy Fisher was raised in institutions from the moment of his birth in prison to a single mother. He ultimately came to live with a foster family, where he endured near-constant verbal and physical abuse. In his mid-teens he escaped and enlisted in the navy, where he became a man of the world, raised by the family he created for himself.

Finding Fish shows how, out of this unlikely mix of deprivation and hope, an artist was born -- first as the child who painted the feelings his words dared not speak, then as a poet and storyteller who would eventually become one of Hollywood's most sought-after screenwriters.

A tumultuous and ultimately gratifying tale of self-discovery written in Fisher's gritty yet melodic literary voice, Finding Fish is an unforgettable reading experience.

Finding Fish, by Antwone Fisher, is a passionate and heart wrenching look into the life of the author as a ward of the state. Thankfully, he escapes the terrors of his childhood and eventually finds success. Fisher writes with a distinctive voice. He is able to convey the emotions of the young boy he portrays in the memoir, rather than telling the story through the voice of an adult. The memoir is an honest, and shocking, look into the world of an orphan without anyone to protect him. His father had been shot two months before his birth and his mom is in prison. Throughout his life with the Picketts, his foster parents, Antwone is forced through horrific events that are painful to read about. He is molested at a young age by a babysitter, beaten, mentally abused, and treated like a ghost. He becomes reserved and shy, lacking love and the comfort of a family. Even worse, his social workers are sadly oblivious to the abuse because the Picketts are able to transform into respectable and polite adults when in public. Remarkably, Antwone braves through his torturous childhood, as well as homelessness for a short time, and finds himself in the Navy. This becomes his miracle, and inspires him to do more with his life. He finds himself traveling around the world, educating himself about different cultures as well as teaching himself English with the help of a thesaurus. In comparison to his childhood, Antwone is in paradise. This transition from a hopeless child with no allies in the world to a strong, successful Navy officer illustrates a major theme in the memoir. No matter how horrible somebody's life is, with perseverance and hope it is possible to achieve anything. Although Antwone is thrown into a terrible life, he finds his own success and thankfully escapes his past and finds happiness. This book is an emotional rollercoaster and any reader will become attached to Antwone, rooting for him against the negativity in his life.

and taught me something. It taught me how much we all share--the need to belong, for family, to search, to question. This book is unexpected tender and this boy's journey impacted my own journey, my own questions of family, of accceptance.

At first I resisted this book because it seemed to be written by an adult looking over his childhood from a very mature place. However, late in the book it is a revelatory experience to find that this is exactly what happened when an unfair accusation concerning Antwone at age 25 during his Navy experience 'caused' him to buy a dictionary, a thesorus and learn writing almost from scratch at this age. He soon found that he couldn't stop. Later he wrote this book that has become a best seller very deservedly. It is full of remarkable coincidences that could not be other than genuine because of hundreds of tiny clews that all add up to this person having been there. This is a profound work concerning human holistic Intelligence that Confirms Joseph Pierce's 'Magical Child Matures."

Finding Fish was a good book. I first learned of Antowne Fisher a few years ago when he appeared on the Montell Williams show. After hearing his story on the show I immediately wanted to go out and buy his book to find out more about this wonderful young man but could never find the book. A few years went by and then a movie of his life was made. After seeing the movie, which I thought was very good, I decided that the movie did a good job of telling his story and that I no longer wanted to purchase the book. Some years later I was in a book store looking for some books to purchase and came across Finding Fish on the book shelf. Since I was in a thrift book store I said what the heck and purchased this book along with some others. Well needless to say it was meant for me to read this book. The movie just touched on a small portion of his life and did nothing to give us a better understanding of Antwone's full story. The book went into more detail and was just phenomenal. I have such respect and admiration for Mr. Fisher and all that he endured. The saying is true: "All things happen for a reason" were it not for his horrific
childhood I don't think Antwone would be the man he is today. Kudows for Mr. Fisher!! If you have not read this book I recommend you do.

Don't be fooled by the title- although it focuses on the dark side of every Wraith, this outstanding book contains tons of important information on all sorts of subjects- from exactly what your Eidolon IS, and when it comes into play, to roleplaying romance and love.

Other important topics covered include exactly how Castigation affects your Shadow- and while your Shadow is by definition your adversary, the isn't always your enemy. There is a lot more to Psyche/Shadow interaction than just "I'm the Good Guy, he's the Bad Guy."

Every Circle of Wraiths should have this one- you owe it to yourselves... and to your Shadows. :)

Containing tons of background information, new uses for Arcanoi (and three entirely new "lost" Arcanoi), new character and Shadow archetypes, and even a guide to playing Wraith in other cultures' lands of the dead, there is something in here for everybody.

This book is an absolute must-have for any serious Wraith player.

                                        Book Description

Most of us think of leaders as courageous risk takers, orchestrators of major events-in a word, heroes. Yet while such figures are inspiring and admirable, Harvard Business School Professor Joseph Badaracco argues that their larger-than-life accomplishments are simply not what makes the world work. What does, he says, is the sum of millions of small yet consequential decisions that men and women working far from the limelight make every day: how a line worker for a pharmaceutical company responds when he discovers a defect in a product's safety seal; how a manager deals with a valued employee suspected of stealing; how a trader handles a transaction error that will cost a client money.

Badaracco calls them "quiet leaders"-people who choose responsible, behind-the-scenes action over public heroism to resolve tough leadership challenges. These individuals don't fit the stereotype of the bold and gutsy leader, and they don't want to. What they want is to do the "right thing" for their organizations, their coworkers, and themselves-but inconspicuously and without casualties. They do so by being baldly realistic about the complexities of their own motives and those of the dilemmas they face. In today's fast and fluid business world, nothing is as it seems. And they know it.

Drawing from a four-year study of quiet leadership, Badaracco presents eight practical and counterintuitive guidelines for confronting situations in which right and wrong seem like moving targets. Grounding each strategy in an engaging story, he shows how these "non-heroes" succeed by managing their political capital, buying themselves time, bending the rules, and more.

From leaders in the executive suite to aspiring leaders in the office cubicle, Leading Quietly compellingly shows how patient, everyday efforts can add up to a better company and even a better world.

Joseph L. Badaracco Jr. is a Professor at Harvard Business School, the Chair of the M.B.A. Elective Curriculum, and the author of Defining Moments: When Managers Must Choose between Right and Right (ISBN 0875848036, HBS Press, 1997).

Thumbs up! A book worth reading especially for the manager/sr manager level people in an organization. This is a motivational book for those who went to the pain in making important decisons in his/her daily job..... and without knowing the level of impact their decision making had on the very success of the company they work for.

Big title jobs do not translate into Leadership or the impact it would have in an organization.

5 out of 5 stars Decision Making in the Middle Ranks.......2007-02-10

There are big bold decisions. And these decisions require big bold leaders.

In the military aspect, the decision to go on D-Day was one such decision. But after Eisenhower made it, the whole thing was basically out of his hands. After that plans were put into effect, lower level generals did their thing, as did the officers under them. All the way down the chain to the lowest Sergeant people began to make decisions.

This book is about these lower level decision makers. They may be some ways up from the sergeant. Perhaps they are a department head, perhaps head of a small division or even a small company. These are the people who don't make the big bold decisions, but whose decisions are, in total, the life blood of the operation.

It's important also to remember that from these people will come the ones that move into the top ranks. In a way, life as a quiet leader is training for the upper levels. In a time when most leadership books concentrate on the top levels, this is an important look at the role of those who don't make it quite that far.

Finished the book in 6 hours - easy to read. Badaracco did a good job in pointing to the some of the obvious truth in the world - where common people bear the daily burden but get little credit for it - in corporate America also we see this day-in and day-out - people with big mouth and connections get most of the glory where as the people who do the real design for success get little or nothing -
it was worth my 6 hours of plane time

1 out of 5 stars I forced myself to finish this book.......2006-11-02

The title of this book caught my eye, because of its seemingly different approach to leadership. Over the course of my career, I have read over sixty leadership books, and this by far is the worst one I have read.

The author painfully stretches stories to fit his proposed point of view. Please do not misunderstand me, I believe leaders can lead quitely; however, his examples and portrayal of leaders was awefull.

I will never recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how to be a good leader. Choose a book by Covey, Maxwell, Drucker, Collins, Dow, Merril, or countless other authors. Do not spend your money or, more importantly, your time reading this book. Find a book written by someone who has proven leadership.

4 out of 5 stars How to lead forcefully, but without any noise.......2006-09-20

This philosophical essay about leadership is not about the kind of leader who makes it onto the front pages of newspapers or into the history books. Instead, it is about average people who labor in the middle to lower levels of bureaucracies, and who do the work that keeps their organizations moving forward. Author Joseph L. Badaracco, Jr., calls these people "quiet leaders." They make decisions that may not appear earthshaking, but that still must take many complex factors into account. Badaracco illustrates the kinds of ethical and moral dilemmas quiet leaders face by extracting guidelines from case studies. However, many of the stories he presents are so commonplace, and the lessons he draws are so self-evident, that the book is hardly the "unorthodox guide" it wishes to be. We recommend this to mid- and low-level managers who are looking for an alternative to traditional ideas about heroic leadership.
