Sleek and sophisticated like the princess herself, Diane Clehane's Diana: The Secrets of Her Style thoroughly analyzes the princess's role as an international fashion icon. Through interviews with Diana's designers and stylists, original sketches by her designers, and more than 100 photographs, Secrets details Diana's evolution from a dowdy, plain schoolgirl to a Versace-touting diva who harnessed the power of glamour to achieve humanitarian goals. Broken into four stages of development, Clehane's book interweaves behind-the-scenes anecdotes with Diana's public image. When the princess wore shimmering, crescent-shaped earrings to meet the leaders of Saudi Arabia, for example, the press reported that the earrings were an extravagant, costly gift from her hosts. In truth, the striking accessory was merely costume jewelry she bought for less than $40 at a popular department store. Another telling insight comes from Diana's hairdresser, Richard Dalton, who styled the princess's coif differently for the state opening of Parliament in 1984: "It knocked the Queen off the front page," and stayed in the headlines for days afterwards. Subsequently, Diana and Dalton were careful about making any changes to her lush locks, for fear of taking limelight from the royals and creating political rifts. --Rebekah Warren

Author Captures Diana's "Style".......2000-06-19
More than just a "fashion parade" of Diana's clothes, this book captures the real essence of the Princess of Wales herself as seen via what she wore. The author, Diane Clehane, admits that she is a great fan of the Princess, yet she gives an honest account of Diana's transformation from unknown nursery-school teacher to international superstar. She candidly points out "fashion mistakes" that the Princess made along the way in her public life while also leading the reader to an understanding that Diana's "style" was so much more than her clothes.
Diana had a figure and height which enabled her to wear clothes beautifully, but even more important than that is the personality which shone forth. It is this which Ms. Clehane has successfully revealed in the pages of this book. She has, with grace and eloquence, drawn the line between fashion and style and shown that the clothes did not make Diana. Diana made the clothes.
This is a great book........1999-03-25
In the Foreward, the author writes, "DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES, WAS ONE OF FASHION'S BRIGHTEST STARS. She found a way to articulate something all women instinctively know: our clothes speak more fluently - and honestly - about ourselves that words ever could. While Diana popularized pearl chokers, designer handbags and short hair, her greatest contribution to fashion was her intuitive understanding of the power of style. It was a gift she used wisely.
"Diana made us believe in transformation and reinvention and she did it through the clothes she wore. Her emotional life was mirrored by her appearance. Her journey from a rather ordinary-looking kindergarten teacher to Her Royal Highness to a stunning, independent single woman was rifle with images every woman could relate to. To women of all ages who grew up believing in fairy-tale endings, Diana in her unabashedly romantic wedding dress was the embodiment of a modern day Cinderella. In her short black cocktail dress worn as 'revenge dressing' to upstage her unfaithful husband and strike at those who underestimated her, she became a role model for embattled survivors. In photographs which captured her toned body dashing off to the gym in colorful workout closthes ( the same ones we own!), she represented the physical ideal of the ninties: radiantly healthy, sensual and strong.
"Many of us saw our own reflection in Diana. When she exchanged ball gowns and tiaras for simple suits and straight hair, we recognized - the idealized version of ourselves - in her. We wanted to be like her, and she, it seemed, wanted to be like us. That is the essence of her appeal: Diana was Everywoman.
"...Ultimately, Diana was not a woman that could ever be completely understood. Complicated and simple, outwardly sophisticated and emotionally naive, she was - so we made ourselves believe - just like us. In truth, she was like no one else in the world."
Diana had that innate ability of putting clothing, colors, and accessories together which others dared not to try. She possessed a sense of style in clothing and in colors which always seemed to complement her surroundings regardless of where she was. In short, Diana looked elegant in everything she wore, and she always chose clothes that clearly conveyed respect for her hosts. As the most enduring fashion icon of the modern age, Diana was the woman that millions of women wanted to look at and look like, but unfortunately, there will never be another Princess of Wales like her.
This is a great book and a must for all who collect book on Diana, Princess of Wales.
A stylish and substantive tribute.......1999-03-17
I own all the books written about Princess Diana and this one is very special. Yes, the writer is a fan but I think it adds something to the sincerity of the text. It seems Ms. Clehane spent a great deal of time researching her subject and got some very touching material from those who knew her well.
The photos are beautiful (many that I've never seen before) and the sketches are very interesting, too. I love the tribute that Ms. Clehane wrote in the introduction of the book. She expresses her feelings beautifully.
I found all the stories to be accurate. And as for errors, I found several in the Georgina Howell book that was $10 more.
This book has a lovely spirit.
A gushing tribute by a fan, for fans........1998-11-11
Currently there are about four different books on the market focussing on the fashions of the Princess of Wales. This one was written by a fan, and it suffers for that; the text is gushing and adoring, and just repeats stories told elsewhere. It also needed a good edit--notice the typos and misspelling of "Dutchess" [sic].
For more thoughtful text (and the same pictures), buy Georgina Howell's book.
nothing new here.......1998-10-18
Add this gushing paean to the Diana beatification movement. It's nicely produced with pretty photos and some designer sketches you may not have seen before, but the text is a rehash (some appear to be incorrect if the first versions I read of them are accurate) well-documemnted Diana anecdotes. I was really ready to like this book, but was disappointed--no "secrets" revealed within. sorry.

You know what a glob is, so what's a gloob?.......2000-03-31
Not the best book I ever read, but this book is full of funny words you won't find in the dictionary. A kid-friendly book, they might appericate the humor more then I did.

Book Description
Volume I
New ideas, technical novelties an more on the age old Italian game with 4,d4!, allowing the sharp and forcing "Italian Gambit" to emerge. This move, a surprising one to many, transforms the classic "Giouco Piano" or literally the quiet game into anything but its revered and somewhat sedate namesake.
Black's third move, 3...Bc5 seems "safe" and allows the second player plenty of time to develop (quietly) for positional play. This will occur on White playing almost any reasonable move, except for the center assaulting initiative gaining 4.d4!...being the main focus of this endeavor.
4.d4! is clearly a forcing move, Black must react! Whatever unfolds from this point, White will have central control, lead in development, the initiative and it is White not Black who will get the first emerging opportunitites.
Accurate play by Black is necessary to hold and neutralize the initial gains of opposition, and it will be difficult to demonstrate anything better than equality, or that White cannot claim real compensation for the gambit pawn.
This Book involves no less than three (3) years of study, Master analysis; including complete computer verification of all important variations.
Volume II
This masterful work is short, yet concise and to the point, guiding the 1.e4 player in handling and management of all of Black's classing opening responses.
1. Nf6 - Alekhine's
1. e6 - French
1. d6 - Pirc
1. d5 - Scandinavian
1. c6 - Caro Kann
1. c5 - Sicilian
1. Nc6 - Nimzowitsch
These lines have been studied and developed over many years by the venerable Chess Master and teacher Jude Acers, they are the essential and recommended lines for all play that commences 1.e4, but are especially effective for the new "limited" time controls in present and future tournament play.
All levels, whether they be the first or second side of the board will discover fresh arsenals for both attack and defense. As White, once you embrace (and you will) these "to the point" openings, this book will take you via clear reference to the sources of future study. As Black, you must be prepared. The reader will not be overwhelmed by masses of theory or endless analytical variations, but shall discover how and where to find such material.
- A clear opening guide for the newer player
- A no nonsense opening system for the more advanced player
- New concepts for the Upper Echelon of chess to meet the coming evolution of "Knockout" and "less time" in serious tournament play.
- STAY ON TOP, become a world super star in the global phenomena of mass appeal.

"There is brand new theory and some re-discoveries of old forgtten games and ideas...This is a very rich book."
"The Miami Variation (1. e4 e52.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.d4 Bxd4 5. Nxd4 Nxd4 6. Be3[6.0-0 Nf6 could transpose to Koltanowski's line]) was the brainchild of amateur George Laven."

Customer Reviews:
eccentric but fun.......2006-04-15
I enjoyed the references to classical games and the way the author showed how the theory developed. I play the Max Lange whenever possible but castle first before pushing the pawn. Knowing more of the theory here would have saved me working it out myself through a lot of trial and error over the years. There is much in this volume to think about.
That said, it is a rather eccentric piece of modern publishing. The layout and even the typefaces are all over the place. Some of the games referenced annoyingly don't have dates. The Classical Giuocco Piano header notation on page 128 doesn't match its diagram.
The book is a bit like Alice in Wonderland, things get 'curiouser and curiouser' although it is fun to look around.
Very badly organized.......2005-02-27
This book has a lot of original ideas and a lot of colorful stories, but the arrangement of the material is very bad. It is rarely clear what "best" play is supposed to be, and when Acers encounters a theoretical problem he will often cop out with a remark that the line gives good practical chances or is very strong in fast-time-limit games, rather than trying to get to the objective truth. The reader must do a great deal of work to construct a real repertoire from this book -- there are enough good chess ideas that it can be done, but a lot of irrelevant material is thrown in, because Acers can't resist name-dropping or showing some famous brilliancies that don't actually bear on the analysis in the book.
The main theoretical contribution is Laven's "Miami variation" -- 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Bc5 4 d4 Bxd4 5 Nxd4 Nxd4 6 Be3!, which appears to give sufficient compensation to equalize and good practical winning chances against an unprepared opponent. This means that 4.d4, previously thought bad, is actually quite playable, and has many transpositional advantages. The other valuable analysis is in the Two Knights variation 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Nf6 4 d4 exd4 5 e5! d5!? 6 Bb5! Ne4 7 Nxd4, where it is shown that Black cannot fully equalize and White can maintain an endgame bind with a small advantage (and no losing chances).
A Unique and Entertaining Chess Book.......2004-12-16
This book contains much analysis not found anywhere else. How many currently published chess books can say that? What makes this book so entertaning is the collection of personal stories by Master Acers that permeate the volume. One sees a unique perspective on chess in the trenches and learns unique twists on classic games. This is a great chess book to study or just to read. I highly recommend it.
JUDE ACERS - Great Chess Player and Storyteller.......2004-02-15
It's Awesome!! The simplicity of the read is breathtaking! The Italian Gambit System is one of the best gambits I've ever seen. No other author writes like this!
Italian Gambit -awesome book.......2004-01-31
Jude Acers has written an awesome book ! I love the graphics, the chess stories, the chess analysis, and Jude's commentary. Jude brings to life many American chess players, who played the game with great heart and spirit. Jude's prose is filled with the fighting spirit of Bobby Fischer and Ken Smith. Jude's passion for the game comes out in his lively prose.
HIs chess stories remind me of the oral history style put to prose by the great Studs Terkel. This book is a must read for anyone interested in chess, or the history of its players, including many great american chess players who are not known that well. Honor is due Jude ACERS on his outstanding book ! I hope his book will spark a new american renaissance in chess!

A very interesting book by a trusting author .......2006-07-09
I quite like this book and find it very interesting. I am always looking for opportunities and the author has done a good job at keeping my interest
This is a great reference point to start and if you're serious about creating a good business for yourself then read this book.
I also suggest that you read Untapped Wealth Discovered by Jeff Marquis and Kerry Harrison.
This book is very focused on helping you to create niche businesses in niche markets that are ripe for the taking.
Moreover, this book has the approval of the American government plus several business experts worldwide and you should read both editions.
Read both editions.
Dated.......2005-04-05
I liked this book 3 years ago but now I find that it is pretty outdated. Check websites and blogs for more up to date information.
Useful information, but dated........2004-08-02
This is a 1999 edition of a similar book published by the authors in 1994. It is a good basic overview of the scope of possible home businesses that have proven successful for people in the past. It is not an encyclopedia of all possible ways to earn money from home, but rather focuses on what the Edwards' have determined to be the top 100 possibilities.
There is a fair amount of detail in each job description, although being familiar with some, I can say that the information given in those cases is not enough to actually start such a business, nor is it an in-depth look. The section on Desktop Video barely mentions the fact that you need to have a certain amount of talent, and that it is not an easy job at all. This book is designed to give one enough information about a business to determine if it is worth further research, and gives some resources for that research.
Given the age of the book, some of the information is way out of date. Again, the Desktop Video section is a good example: a 3 gig hard drive is hardly considered large today, and is not nearly enough to even begin editing video. This was obviously before the advent of MiniDV, which requires 13 gig or more per hour of video. I also found a glaring error on page 16: a week has 168 hours, not 174 (at least where I come from: 24 hours times 7 days). While such an error is easy to have creep in, a fact that easily checked but missed does make one pause about other information in the book. The book has a long Table of Contents but no Index.
If you are thinking about trying a business of your own, this book can be helpful in getting a basic idea of what each of these businesses might involve. After you get an idea of a few businesses in which you might be interested from this book, you should research your chosen fields with much more depth. This book is not enough on its own to start you in a business, IMHO.
Excellent book packed with VERY useful information.......2004-04-09
This is not your ordinary "work at home idea" book. The authors really packed a lot of information in this one. And it is valuable information. For instance, in each home business idea they describe, they include pros/cons, REALISTIC salary expectations, potential clients, alternative businesses that are similar, etc. It is great information and really goes beyond the "outline" that most other books give you. If you are looking for ideas on what home business to start, this is the book you need!
Don't bother.......2004-01-21
Its a waste of time and money. Totally not worth it. I am retuning it tomorrow.

The right business for you!.......2000-02-12
So you've decided you should start a business but aren't sure what kind? Reading this book can help you determine the best kind of business for you.
For each business listed, the authors provide a short description, an explanation of "why" it's a good pick, the skills necessary, the initial investment required, resources for more information and a brief dialog with even more information. This book will guide you to making a wise choice.
You can skim the choices listed in the table of contents and then read the details on those that sound most interesting. Or you can read all of them. Either way, you're sure to find some you'd never thought of and perhaps even eliminate some you'd been considering.
Excellent Reference!.......1999-11-02
"The 100 Best Businesses for the 21st Century" is excellent! The book is simple and easy-to-read. But each of the businesses has been researched carefully and well-documented for follow-up work. We recommend this book for lots of folks - it's great for a second job, a career change, and retirees looking for additional income. According to the author, "corporate America has squeezed the enthusiasm out of its workers and more people are deciding to break ranks and be in control by starting their own business." "The 100 Best Businesses for the 21st Century" is a wonderful tool for those contemplating "breaking out." But we also suggest that every high school and 2-year college obtain copies of this book - It's THE BEST reference for future careers and a must-have for those counseling younger folks.
