5 out of 5 stars Never Out of Style Tried and True.......2006-09-07

Even though the Famous Artists School was found in many publications when I was a child growing up, it still is hard to beat their tried and true processes from step by step methods to the finished product. If you want simple, comprehensible and easily learned methodology of creating animal form.....this is a must have book. You learn the basic form here and add the individual spirit and media to your subject. I am glad I was able to find the Famous Artist School Step-By-Step Method Books....and for the price it is hard to be without.

5 out of 5 stars How to Draw Animals from the Famous Artist's School Collecti.......2003-04-13

There are many approaches that artists working in the 'furry' or anthromorphic field can take to their characters. Some place animal-like heads on top of what are essentially human bodies (the egyptian god approach) some twist quadrapeds into a bipedal position (and leave it to suspension of disbelief rather than anatomy to keep them walking!) and of course there are the 'taurs. And finally those weirdos that draw realistic animals......
The Famous Artist school's book 'How to Draw Animals' has something for every type of furry artist no matter what their style. I discusses the basics of animal anatomy, deals with many of the mistakes beginners make, does a very good job of showing how the various types of animal families differ and how to repepresent these differences well. The books has hundreds of sketches showing how the various artists approached the issues dealt with in the text,as well as diagrams of actaul muscular and skeltal structures of some common types.. Are you primarily interested in animal faces? There is also a section on how various animal heads are put together and again a good demonstration of how to differentiate them (an importan point, amatuer furry artists can have problems keeping their cats from looking like dogs and vice versa.) as well as how to use proportion to differentiate the members of a common family (emily the greyhound versus jack the bulldog) Finally it discusses how to analyze an unfamiliar animal and place it in a familiar animal family.
Pretty much all the commonly illustrated groups are dealt with, equines canines, felines, birds as well as how to us proportion to say use the same contstruction for a gazelle as for a clydesdale.
All in all I find this book to be an informative and useful one for the furry artist, I think all but the most advanced will finds something of use in it. This and the other famous artist books are commonly available used and can be acquired at cheaply at amazon.com. It is worth adding to the library of any furry artist.

      Book Description

Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalogs: Early 1950s focuses on wearable, collectible vintage clothing and accessories. The Sears catalogs provide the basis for a comprehensive evaluation of the fashions of this period. There is no guessing as to the dates of the clothing, and the descriptions are unsurpassed in terms of detail and accuracy. Vintage clothing from the early 1950s is extremely desirable to collectors, but it is increasingly difficult to find. Fashion designers look to the elegant styles of the period for inspiration. Collectors love the beautiful crafted handbags and the carefully tailored suits, jackets, and coats. Shoes have become very interesting to collectors in recent years, perhaps due to their comfortable styling and beautiful craftsmanship. This survey encompasses all aspects of the era's fashions, including: gowns, dresses, shirts, skirts, sportswear, accessories, nightware, underwear, coats, suits, and jackets. Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalogs: Early 1950s includes introductory remarks, helpful hints for collectors, descriptions from the catalog, and current values placed next to the original Sears' prices.

I wrote a song on how bad dragon ball z is:

      Once apon a time
there was a bunch little kids,
      who lived a happy life
until their musles grew too big.

      Then they got these powers,
      they became so strong.
      I hate ever so much,
that I went and wrote this song.

      I don't want to know
why they wanted to be so tough,
but one thing is for sure,
they are way, way, WAY too rough!

      So from this day on,
I wish they will go away!
      It will be the end
      of their violent, nasty way!

Just because most reviews are by kids doesn't mean this is a kiddie comic. The artwork, storyline, and violence is all a treat. Read Vols. 1-4 first, and then read this one. For a more detailed review read my editorial for DBZ Vol. 1, "This is a masterpiece"

5 out of 5 stars A Piece of Brilliance in Your Hand.......2004-08-24

This graphic novel is quite enjoyable. As a matter of fact, these graphic novels are better than the television series because this is how Dragon Ball* was meant to be seen. In this edition, the Z senshi is exhausted by The Saiyan. After he flees, they all recuperate(the survivors)and head off in a space ship to Planet Namek to use the Nameksei-jun dragon balls to wish back their dead friends (Earth's dragon balls were destroyed with Piccolo's death). But there are others who seek the balls, and they use more "unfriendly" tactics.

*There was no Dragon Ball "Z", it was all Dragon Ball. Where it says #5 on the cover, under it says DB 21 of 42.

5 out of 5 stars Shonen Jump makes good Dragonball!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-04-20

This book totally rocks! It's not quite as good as no. 4, but hey, it's still worth five stars! In it, Kuririn, Son Gohan, and Bulma go out in a spaceship to find planet Namek. Their friends Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, and Piccolo Daimao died in a brutal battle against the Saiyans Nappa, and Vegeta. They are going to get the Namek Dragonballs to wish their friends back to life because he Earth ones disappeared when Piccolo died. One thing went wrong though. Vegeta, who escaped Earth vowing evenge on Son Goku, is also there trying to get Dragonballs. If that's not bad enough, the evil emperor Freeza and his gang are also there. Think that's the worst that could happen, the ship breaks down. Something good happens but I wont say what. Just to tell you, the pricing on these Shonen Jump editions is much better than the Viz editions. The layout is alout cooler too! A very good product in all.

In the aftermath of his titanic battle with Goku, Vegeta retreats from Earth, vowing revenge. In search of a way to resurrect their dead friends, Kuririn, Gohan, and Bulma repair an ancient alien spaceship and go into space in search of Namek-- Piccolo's home planet where the wish-granting Dragon Balls were originally made. But Namek has become a battleground, where evil emperor Freeza and his minions are slaughtering the peaceful Namekians to fulfill Freeza's wish for immortality! Stranded on a planet full of enemies, the three astronauts radio back to Earth begging for a hospitalized Goku to come to their aid--but "help" comes from an unexpected source as Vegeta, now stronger than ever, turns against his former master Freeza in order to get the Dragon Balls for himself. But are Vegeta's intentions any less evil than Freeza's?

A fresh voice...revealing new truths, reminding us of folks we know and making nearly everything just a little funnier"-Rain Taxi

"Acute, acerbic and endearingly grumpy...Unlike some humorists - think David Letterman and David Sedaris- Ford isn't afraid to forgo quick punch lines when he comments on more serious topics"-Publisher's Weekly

The multi award winning humorist is back with an in depth, on target, and of course, very, very funny guide to all things queer. Why are lesbians fascinated by acoustic guitars? Why are gay men compelled to buy Madonna CD's and face care products. Does Tiger Beat make boys gay? What happens if the Boyfriend Within is sleeping around? No one satirizes and celebrates gay life in twenty-first century America with the unerring accuracy and zeal of Michael Thomas Ford. With the same unerring eye for what makes queer life so delirously weird and worth living that has earned him legions of fans among critics and book buyers alike, Ford examines gay archetypes, attitudes, fashion and gossip; you know…the good stuff!

        3 out of 5 stars Hmmm..........2006-09-30

I realized after reading Augusten Burrough's "Magical Thinking" and Ford's "The Little Book of Neuroses" and the like that I'm not really a fan of collections of witty/humorous essays and personal stories. I guess because I expect all the essays to crack me up. So far, I've yet to read a book that has made me laugh from front to back (...yet).

"Neuroses" was an entertaining read. Some were hilarious, some serious and some thought-provoking. I found myself laughing at some parts. I also found myself nodding in agreement as if Ford read my mind, such as gays in monogamous relationships.

It's worth a read and perhaps you'll laugh more than I did.

5 out of 5 stars He speaks to me!!!!!.......2006-04-08

I love all the books in this series. Much better than his current books. These books just hit right home! LOVE THEM!

4 out of 5 stars Diary of a Gay Man.......2003-05-02

This was one book I was unable to put down. Michael Thomas Ford's THE LITTLE BOOK OF NEUROSES: ONGOING TRIALS FROM MY QUEER LIFE was a good read overall. Although I didn't like the quizzes, even though they were meant to poke fun and not be taken seriously. I thought he hit the nail with the hammer on so many issues, so many things that are relevent to everyday life. I found his thoughts on queer life interesting, and the misconceptions that come with it. For the first few short stories he discusses his neurotic behavior and how he believes its the way to be, which was quite humorous. His humor is a bit off center which is a good thing. He is quite humorous, and the short stories were nice to read. An easy book to read, and well worth the effort.

        4 out of 5 stars Fabulously skewed.......2002-02-20

Michael Thomas Ford's latest collection of quirky essays has a wide range of topics (my favorites are the ones on gay monogamy and queer bookstores and being neurotic). I was surprised by the more serious ones, but I do feel they are a great progression for his voice. What I didn't like were the plethora of cutesy quizzes. After the third one, I felt they lost the attraction Ford probably meant, and they became tedious. Overall though, the collection is still vivacious and brilliant, but it does seem to lack a bit of that spunky skewering that he's most known for.

3 out of 5 stars More of the same, but more personal.......2002-02-04

On this new installment Mr. Ford serves us more of his now well-honed recipe to describe his gay life trials, but with less pages than the previous opus. Some are quite amusing such as his self-tests on how to decide whether one should become a drag queen or a leatherman (in a way both are drag I suppose). It is perfect reading for a beach stay, or waiting at your dentist office and having people look weirdly at you while you hold the book in front. But it still feels the same as the previous ones: well written, slightly biting, but not that novel anymore. Though this time there is a slight change: Mr. Ford has moved to LA and he seems to comply more with your average gay-cliches: he works out now and wears sunglasses. Perhaps his early steps in his middle age crisis? In other words, under his cleansing tone we seem to detect a more personal, and perhaps insecure, persona. I hope that this bodes well for his next installment since I think that Mr. Ford is uniquely qualified to describe the aging process of gay men by lightening it up with his irony.

            Book Description

Illuminating the author’s unshakable faith in the power of music in people’s lives, this text draws upon the fields of literature, philosophy, psychology, and religious thought to highlight the importance of music in an increasingly chaotic and techno-centric world. Issues such as the folly of the work/play mindset and the relationship of music to time’s inexorable passage are discussed, as are many ways in which music can lead to a deeper understanding of the human condition. The superficiality of the market-driven world of professional pop music and the ineffectual approach of traditional music education are also explored.

It's possible to look like a leader, say all the right things to shareholders, make employees feel good about themselves, and still not produce the sorts of results everyone expects and wants from your company. A previous generation might have called this winning the battle but losing the war.

Directing employees is harder than it looks, since past performance isn't really an indication of how a leader will do in the future. As the authors say, "The half-life of knowledge grows ever shorter in most professions, requiring even high performers to unlearn what they know and do."

The authors--a university professor and two heads of consulting firms--divide leadership priorities into four areas: employees, organization, customers, and investors. A company head generally has to focus on one responsibility over the other three, but can't get away with ignoring any of them for very long. They explain each of these four priorities in depth--noting, for example, that keeping employees committed and productive means "mass customizing" the workplace to fit individual employees' needs while keeping everyone working toward the same goal. That customization may require adjustments unheard-of a few years ago--allowing an employee to work from home in a different city, for example--but pays off in the retention of valuable human assets that would otherwise take their training, experience, energy, and creativity to other companies, possibly competitors.

People who already have leadership positions in their companies can certainly find a lot of important information, but the book may be even more valuable to those who want to move into management roles. It certainly shows what challenges to expect. --Lou Schuler

                Book Description

Few would argue that leadership matters. Companies that can attract, develop, and retain the best leaders are likely to flourish. The issue grows hazy when we attempt to define leadership, and hazier still when managers try to match today's dizzying array of leadership practices with the specific needs of their organization. Results-Based Leadership brings refreshing clarity and directness to the leadership discussion, providing a hands-on program that will help executives succeed with their leadership challenges. A landmark book, Results-Based Leadership challenges the conventional wisdom surrounding leadership. The authors-world-renowned experts in human resources and leadership development-argue that it is not enough to gauge leaders by personal traits such as character, knowledge, style, and values. Effective leaders, say the authors, do more than master the attributes of leadership. They know how to connect their attributes with results. Results-Based Leadership shows executives how to deliver results in four specific areas: results for employees, the organization, its customers, and its investors. The authors provide action-oriented guidelines for readers to develop and hone their own results-based leadership skills. They look beyond the quick fixes, buzzwords, and trends that typify many leadership programs, and focus instead on producing results that can be measured and integrated into any business strategy or corporate culture. Here, for the first time, is a guidebook that bridges the gap between leadership theory and leadership skills. Results-Based Leadership fundamentally improves our ability to deliver real leadership results.

While I found this book to be excellent in both concept and substance, I have nothing to add to what other reviewers have said about those aspects of the book, so will say only that it is also enjoyable reading. I am always grateful to those who possess the not insignificant ability to make learning enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Classic on leading to get results.......2007-04-13

Dave Ulrich, Jack Zenger and Norm Smallwood's book is really a broadside against the "cult of personality" that rules so much of the current thinking about what makes leaders great. Amazingly, even in the pragmatic world of business, personality attributes - such as the "vision thing" - often dominate conversations about what you need to become a great leader. But great leaders are great because they achieve great results. The authors seek a balanced approach that recognizes the importance of both strong executive skills and bottom-line success. They provide questionnaires, charts and exercises. We strongly recommend this book to managers and aspiring leaders who are looking for a practical approach.

5 out of 5 stars At last, a leadership book that talks about results!.......2005-04-05

Many leadership books today trumpet two-minute techniques, fads, and processes to do everything but the job at hand. Ulrich, Zenger and Smallwood describe how the "attributes" that other management books fancy are nothing unless they are attached to one of four types of results: Employee, Customer, Organization or Shareholder.

Beyond stating the obvious, they also go into depth on identifying the attributes that really matter, versus those that just sound right. They then delve into what it means to be a results focused leader, and a leader that builds other leaders.

Although the book is only five years old, some of the examples (Enron and Lucent) may seem dated, as the companies have falled out of favor. Since it was written in 1999, that is forgivable. The key ideas and concepts still hold strong. This is a worthy addition to any leadership library or reading list.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on leadership & implementation..........2003-06-08

Together with Kotter's "Leading Change" and Fogg's "Implementing Your Strategic Plan," this is one of the best books ever written on leadership and strategy implementation. Contrary to what an earlier reviewer stated, this book only mention's Enron on two pages (out of 234). And, in each instance, is very specific about what can be learned from the ill-fated company (this book is far from a "cheerleading session" for Enron). Instead, the book focuses on the mechanics of leadership and strategy implementation. As a strategy consultant, I find myself recommending this book to clients again and again. I believe it should be a part of any serious manager's business library -- particularly if you are a senior manager. Overall grade: A/A+.

"Although nonprofits have adopted a team approach in program delivery and even management, many nonprofits have not used this same successful approach in fundraising. This friendly guide argues for creating a fundraising team that involves board members, executive staff, line staff, and volunteers and gives examples of how such teams can operate effectively. Along the way, the author makes fundraising seem less mysterious and intimidating, and lead the reader to feel confident and enthusiastic about creating a successful fundraising team--no small achievement."--Jan Masaoka, executive director, CompassPoint Services

Many nonprofits rely on a lone staff member or volunteer to raise the money they need to sustain or grow their programs. In this insightful resource, leading fundraiser Mim Carlson presents a practical approach to involving the entire organization in fundraising. In doing so, she helps board members, executive directors, and development directors turn their staff and volunteers into a cohesive team with clearly defined goals, specific roles, joint accountability, diverse talents and skills, and strong leadership.

In Team-Based Fundraising Step by Step, Carlson draws on popular team-building theory and successful techniques--as well as on her years of fundraising experience--to offer a fresh framework for helping teams become more unified in their fund development activities. She argues that individuals who act alone cannot make the most of fundraising strategies and instead advises readers to include the board of directors, the executive director, staff, and other volunteers in strategic planning and development.

At last, nonprofit managers, board members, development professionals, and fundraisers at all levels of experience have a dynamic guide to making the most of fundraising opportunities through effective collaboration.
