Book Description
The phenomenal success of the recent film Gladiator ensures that ancient Rome will continue to inspire moviemakers and attract audiences as it has done since the dawn of cinema. Indeed, the creators of popular culture have so often appropriated elements of Roman history and society for films and television programs, novels and comic books, advertising and computer games that most people's knowledge of ancient Rome derives from these representations. In Imperial Projections, scholars from a variety of fields -- classics, history, film studies, and gender theory -- provide an interdisciplinary look at how ancient Rome has been depicted in the media and what these varied portrayals tell us about contemporary culture.
The essays in Imperial Projections examine such films as Spartacus, Ben-Hur, Cleopatra, and The Fall of the Roman Empire; the acclaimed BBC television series I, Claudius; the Broadway musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; and the Roman-themed Las Vegas casino Caesars Palace, combining ancient history and cutting-edge cultural studies in a challenging, engaging, and informative volume.
Contributors: Nicholas J. Cull, William Fitzgerald, Alison Futrell, Sandra R. Joshel, Margaret Malamud, Martha Malamud, Donald T. McGuire, Jr., Martin M. Winkler, and Maria Wyke

Demostrates what it studies!.......2003-02-15
In addition to a great introduction, there each of these nine chapters offers a unique and fairly detailed analysis of the Roman Empire in popular culture today. This ranges from the common commentary on "Spartacus" to the unusual look at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas today. The filmography includes both well-known and lesser known movies, especially for American audiences who may not be fully aware of what has been going on in Britain even though it does influence the colonies today. The listing on this Amazon.com entry includes the names and authors of the chapters so I won't waste space by repeating them. Oddly for a collection, I believe that if any article is less than the others it would be the first and the final which really could use more basic definitions and most gusty analysis. All in all, I was pleased with each article's scholarship and presentation. I think a layperson could understand most of these articles and the academic can find a lot to argue for or against.

This is an excellent book for textile designers. Easy to follow and Frederick has been a pleasure to work with. Thanks again!

My daughter is a graphic designer and she asked for this book for Xmas and says that it is TOPS!
The best digital textile design book..........2006-05-12
This is THE most extraordinary professional digital textile design book I have ever read, and as a matter of fact, besides hundreds and hundreds PhotoShop books on the market today, Adobe PhotoShop for Textile Design by Frederick L. Chipkin, is the only one and only one kind.
If you are in the textile design business either new or seasoned, and if you are going to or already using PhotoShop to manipulate textile design, then, after you read just couple of chapters of this book, for instance, some subjects like "using index to reducing color and do the color-way", or "half drop repeat tricks", or "creating a plaid"... you will immediately see that Mr. Chipkin is such an expert both in the textile design and PhotoShop and he knows exactly what he is talking about. By using simple, clear, humorous and straight forward to the point language, he step by step to teach you how to achieve a great result to meet a professional need and how to solve some problem during the design process.
After I read this book and talk to some my CAD textile design friends who have been using PhotoShop to design textile for many years, some even studied in FIT for this major, I found that they did not know a lot of "tricks" which have been mentioned in Mr. Chipkin's book. I truly believe that any one who is in the field and wants to approve the CAD textile design skill, should seriously consider to have this book in his or her design studio library, and I found this book indispensable and well worth the money I spent on it.
I strongly recommend Mr. Chipkin's book to textile design professional.......2006-03-25
I found "Adobe PhotoShop for Textile Design," by Frederick Chipkin informative and well written. After 20 years experience as an designer and stylist, I discovered new and innovative design techniques. I was particularly impressed by Mr. Chipkin's approach to simplifying complex tasks. The book is laid out clearly and concisely, making complex tasks logical to execute and easy to master. There is a wealth of information and techniques that allow the artist to become highly proficient in design creation and processing. The book is a versatile tool; providing the expertise for both the student and the instructor. I have sampled a number of similar books over the years, and I say that I find Mr. Chipkin's book probably the best in the field. I strongly recommend Mr. Chipkin's book to textile design professional, as well as those just entering the field.
Adobe Photoshop for Textile Design.......2006-02-12
I'm a textile designer who had been hesitant to learn how to use the computer to design pattern since I had been painting and drawing for over 20 years. When faced with first learning Photoshop and trying to figure out how to use it to do textiles, I was overwhelmed.
Than one of my friends told me about this book . It was too good to be true. This book is so well written in plain english and explained everything, step by step. That as a beginner I was able to figure it out and learn without much trouble. I highly recommend this book, especially since you can learn at your own pace and refer back easily. I've taken classes, but you get hit with so much information at one time it's difficult to absorb so much and than remember the how to apply it.

Rendering Fabric and Prints in Photoshop.......2007-03-12
Okay, this book has some great bits in it, but it's also full of a lot of "fluff." I wish it was more concise. I don't think it's worth what I paid for it. I can't say I would recommend it unless you are completely lost and want sections devoted to definitions, the textile industry, other printing methods, etc. I'm a Fibers student looking to go into the textile industry as a repeat artist, and I was hoping this book would cover more computer/program techniques. I learned better shortcuts and methods on my own than I did from this book. Do yourself a favor and find someone (or another book) that can cover Photoshop for you.
A BIG MESS!.......2005-03-24
Absolutely not worth the price it is being sold for. i agree with other reviewers that half of the information is totally not required.Plus the CD's are a mess as half of your time is wasted in searching the relative images in the CD for the excercises and some of them are completely missing!!! I could not render half of the fabrics as per the instructions since as they are very unspecific & confusing. So many pages have been wasted in giving a brief of textiles which is a different subject altogether and the one who would want to use this book has to be thorough with textiles. The information on textiles also is too brief & confusing.Aslo there were too many examples & mini biographies of people who are successful CAD/Textile designers which was totally not required.I hopped & jumped & skipped throughout the book expecting something useful but in vain.I finally gave up and returned it.Please do not waste money on this book.I really would like someone to come up with a more specific and useful book for using such important softwares like Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop specifically for rendering fashion as I desperately want to learn this. I expected that this book would be a good substitute (as this is the only book i hv found till now that uses photoshop to render textiles) for the highly expensive CAD courses here in NY. But unfortunately i was thouroughly disappointed. Can someone please suggest me any other good books related to Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop for rendering fashion, textiles & prints?????Suggestions are welcome - nins25@gmail.com
a necessary evil.......2005-01-24
this is one of only two refrences currently avlaible on the subject. (a third is coming soon)
there are a lot of editing problems, and missing files. extremly frustrating when you are trying to work thorugh the exercises.
but, i took the basics that it offered and ran with it.
it is a pricy book, but i would recommend it (as it's cheaper then the other book available) as of now, and seen the new book. hopefully a new addition will be released minus the mistakes. so that it can be more useful refrence for those of us intrested in this subject.
i'd also like to see some information on advanced techniques. and more info on using a drawing tablet.
the title is also misleading, as all you learn is how to render textiles.
Very Basic Instruction NOT Inspiration.......2005-01-02
This book should have been 1/2 the size and 1/2 the price. I nearly returned it, but since there are so few instructional books on Photoshop geared towards textile/surface design available on the market, I stuck it out.
I'd throw out half the content. Too much text is spent explaining the textile industry. While it is important to understand the textile trade/printing process, that's not what I wanted when I bought this book. Much of the book focuses on "Basic Design" principles, putting together a portofolio, presentation boards, the future of digital printing etc... like a Textile Design 101 class. Some people might find this helpful ... I found it infuriating.
This book is NOT about inspiration. The exercises are drab, the illustrations and sample files are plain and artless. Sometimes key information about where to look for tools is missing or mis-labeled. One section refers to a Demo plug-in to use, but it doesn't name the plug-in and there are no plug-ins found on the CD. There are product placement "advertisements" that annoy me. And the author assumes from the get-go that the "student" has access to a flatbed scanner and other expensive hardware; clearly a textbook geared towards a shared studio/lab classroom situation.
The CD is a disaster. NONE of the file folders or names referenced in the text relate to the CD content. Most of the files are there, but not in any logical order and with different file names. When the author references a file in an exercise, you can spend more time looking for the file than actually performing the exercise. There are multiple copies of some files and it's missing other files altogether. Chapter 3 is the first chapter where exercises with CD files begin, but the Chapter 3 folder is empty! There are tons of images of "Student" work that is completely uninspired and seems more like a way to get the author's favorite student "published".
This is an unsophisticated and horribly uninspired text. I kept it because there is so little available geared towards textile design.
My background is in Fine Arts with an advanced understanding of textiles including weaving, sewing, handprinting textiles and traditional croquis painting. I am very computer literate and am not afraid of software. I've never been able to merge my hands on painting etc to the digital realm and have been looking for instructional aids to help with that. I had high expectations and wanted a fairly sophisticated reference book. I feel like I'm sifting through a lot of chaff for a meager meal. I guess I'm hungry.
I'm determined to break through to learn to utilize a very sophisticated product (Photoshop) for my needs. I'll get my inspiration elsewhere. I gave this book 2 stars only because there is some value in working through the exercises which are specifically geared towards pattern and textile design.
> If you are looking for inspiration, don't buy this book.
> If you know you'll be dissuaded and frustrated by disorganized and missing references to files and tools - don't buy this book.
> If you're new to design and don't understand textiles, I'm not sure you will be well-served by the presentation of the "Basics".
> If you buy this book, glean what you can and ignore the discouraging mediocrity.
Excellent book!!.......2004-08-02
Excellent Textile and Fashion Textbook
A must buy for anyone in the textile or fashion industries. Beginners will find all the info they need to begin a career in fashion textiles and advanced users of textile cad will find techniques to solve many fabric related issues of CAD design.
The book has been fantastic insight to using Photoshop as textile design software. The enclosed CD has many easy to follow examples that are outlined in the text and a second CD has a 30 day evaluation version of Photoshop.
The portfolio and resume tipsalone are well worth the $60!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent and clear.......2007-05-22
This book is beautifully presented and laid out and printed on quality paper. Most of the chapters have exercises with step-by-step instructions which are clearly presented and illustrated. The actual image files used in the book are available for download on the author's website and are used in the exercises. What you'll learn isn't just applicable to photographing women, but very useful for editing photos in general and for getting to grips with Photoshop. The next best thing to having a live teacher.
A must have.......2007-03-23
This book is a must have for professional and who want to edit in Photoshop like one. I can say that this is the best book.
Good Photoshop book.......2006-08-11
A possibly better title would be "The Art of Retouching Women" as this book concentrates on the use of Photoshop to fix photographs that need drastic correction rather than the actual photography of women. Even so, it's Kelby's usual entertaining beginner Photoshop book with lots of cool graphics and tips that work, even if they are sometimes convoluted. If the photographs you take of women could use some repair and retouching, this book offers lots of good advice.
Very amusing.........2006-08-08
Well, this book is worth owning for amusement value. While there are some overly complex methods of achieving a result that works, most of the information is simply beginner jargon. How to make a girl into a barbie chapter is simply a must see for laughs.
Excellant Book.......2006-02-25
A great learning tool. Easy to follow directions, well illustrated and clearly written.
Advice about taking your best image and tweaking it to make it even better.

Oster Makes It Easy!!.......2006-02-11
Being a neophyte design student I was totally surprised by the
cogent explanations by Ms. Oster for using Adobe Photoshop for
textile design. Easy to follow techniques for gratifying results! The author seems to be equal parts instructor and artist. Highly recommended.

Wonderful Book.......2006-02-09
This book was a tremendous help when trying to learn and perfect the art of photoshop. Oster does a fabulous job getting each lesson across - her images and directions are clear and extremely precise. I would recommend this book to anyone - especially if you are serious about learning photoshop. It is definitely worth more than 5 stars.

Book Description
“When the bats fly low and night’s in the sky, Universal Studios are at their best.” That’s how a critic in the 1930s described the magic of Universal monster movie. This was a genre that the studio essentially invented - enabling it to survive and thrive–and that led to cinematic classics that continue to influence entertainment of all kinds.
Now, from Universal itself, comes a lavishly illustrated book that provides the words and images behind these legendary films–plus heartfelt tributes from some of Hollywood’s most famous fans. Here are beautiful on-screen and behind-the-scenes photos from the studio’s vaults; the background stories of Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Wolf Man, and the other classic characters that scared audiences and scared up profits; the makeup secrets; the censorship battles; and words of praise from friends, family, and fans.
With today’s fantasy and horror films ruling the box-office–and special edition DVDs available of Universal’s masterpieces–Monsters is an invaluable guide for a new generation. It shows where the “creature feature” began, from the twenties silent classic The Phantom of the Opera to fifties favorite Creature from the Black Lagoon. Frightening and fun, this splendid volume is perfect for monster fans of any age.
For more than ninety years, Universal Studios has been bringing unique entertainment experiences to millions of people around the world. Through their motion pictures, home videos, theme parks, television networks and programming, they are in the business of thrills and chills as well as tears and laughter. And with their extensive library of legendary films they have set the standard for inspiring wonder and ultimately transforming moments into lasting memories.
Customer Reviews:
The definitive book on Uiversal monsters.......2007-09-06
This is the best book on Universal monsters ever! I bought it for the pictures and i sure haven't been disappointed. Great fantastic images of the original monsters! Of course if you're looking for an informative book, this probably isn't it. But i don't think it's been published for what it has to say.......just great
Gorgeous pictures, but needs a few more words.......2007-03-15
As a longtime fan of Univeral Monster movies, I have to say I'm delighted with the quality of the many photographs--many of them full-page--in this book. And what is most surprising is that I had never seen many of them. These aren't just the familiar publicity stills that you can find all over the place.
The brief essays by filmmakers such as John Landis, and descendants of the great Universal actors like Karloff and Lugosi are mostly well-written. You can tell the authors have great affection for these films. As someone else has pointed out, there are some errors in the accounts given by uncredited Universal Studios employees. For example, it is said that FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN includes both the title creatures, as well as Dracula. This, of course, did not happen until HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN.
If there's any other real problem with this beautiful book, it's that the text is too brief. Yes, the pictures are the real star of this show, and the book is certainly worth owning for these alone. But as this is an official publication from the studio that made these beloved films, it seems like more time should have been spent discussing the films. Virtually all the sequels--save for BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN--are glossed over with just a few lines. I hope Univeral will consider publishing another volume, and expand on the content of this book.
If you're a fan, you should definitely have this one. It's a fine "coffee table" book, and likely to attract attention from people who've never even seen the films. I bought this one just before having surgery, and a friend who visited me in the hospital (and who only has a passing familiarity with these films) tried to take the book away from me!
amazing.......2007-01-12
the greatest universal monsters book ever compiled with photos of the actors on and off screen. top quality production with color and black and white photos, if you are a fan of the universal monsters you will love this book.
Universal's Monsters reign supreme...even with a few mistakes!.......2007-01-07
As the previous reader's posts have mentioned, this book is packed with excellent pictures from the universal archives. The articles are very interesting and insightful. HOWEVER, there are clearly SEVERAL mistakes in the book that any avid monster fan can spot. For instance, a picture's caption of Bela Lugosi as Frankenstein in "Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man" states that it is Lon Chaney! A second caption on a picture reads " Gwen Conliffe and her Fiance "Glenn Talbot". Glenn Talbot? Not even a character in the film! Gwen's fiance was named Frank Andrews! Many other mistakes plague the book as well, such as when they quote Maria Ouspenskaya's Chilling epitath of the Doomed Larry Talbot, they state it as saying".....evil enters the sea"! What!! It's correct transcript should be "..as the rain enters the soil, the RIVER enters the sea"! This is an unexcusable mistake on a VERY famous quote! Another has a Mummy sequel as having music from "Son of Frankenstein" when it was music taken from "Frankenstein meets the wolf man" and/or "The Wolf Man! (the musical ques are very evident).and , Finally a mistake on page 123, the film "Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man, states it as having ALL three monsters in it ( Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man). The film did NOT have Dracula in it. So the text itself has several mistakes that slightly tarnish an otherwise amazing book. I still reccomend it to all those who love the classic Universal monsters as i do, and at $19.99 it's a bargain!
Universal THEIR unknown MONSTERS.......2007-01-04
There are so many MISTAKES in this book! UNIVERSAL doesn't even know their own monsters!!!!!! They should hire some MONSTER KID like myself to help them out and review their products before they put them out!!!!

Book Description
In The Secret Handshake, top corporate consultant and USC management professor Kathleen Reardon explores and reveals the hidden rules on the ins and outs of corporate politics that you won’t find outlined in any employee handbook.
Based on hundreds of candid interviews with executives at Fortune 500 companies who have achieved their goals and joined the inner circle, The Secret Handshake lays bare the unstated conventions that govern and shape corporate hierarchies. Taking readers inside boardrooms to learn firsthand how the top decision-makers view and assess the employees under them, it offers invaluable advice on such career-building tactics and skills as getting noticed, networking, persuading others, knowing which battles to fight, and mastering the art of the quid pro quo. For all those who aspire to be part of the decision-making body of their organization, The Secret Handshake is the ultimate intelligence report on whom to trust and whom to watch out for, how to manage the inevitable conflicts that will arise, and how to read between the corporate lines.

i borrowed it from the library, then listen to its cd's, and finally bought a copy to keep.......2006-01-18
This is a fantastic eye-opener. As a technically-competent guy, I am always puzzled that certain managers like me a lot, while others seem the other way. This book gives me the answers.
I read the book from library several times during my vacation; then listen to its CD's on my way commute; and finally decide to own a copy of the book to put onto my shelf.
Politics 101.......2005-09-27
As a career consultant, I'm always looking for books to recommend to clients and ezine readers. While we tend to assume corporate managers are all savvy, in fact many are surprisingly naive and we all can stand to learn more.
Secret Handshake is not as strong as Reardon's first book, They Don't Get It, Do They. The first book included novel and original ideas about a subject the author obviously cares about. But it's worth a quick read - not much more.
Reardon begins by categorizing both companies and employees in terms of their political styles. I'm always suspicious of profiles, but her ad hoc approach offers a face-saving way for people to say, "Hey, I'm just not political."
Overall this book includes useful perspectives, although some readers will not be impressed by the common sense reminders. Most corporate employees can figure out that one-upping the boss is bad timing. But some ideas (like he PURRR technique) will save some careers. The section on getting heavy-handed will be especially valuable.
And some will disagree with Reardon's interpretation of a situation. For instance, a young woman visits a recruiting booth while the company recruiter talks to Reardon. She politely excuses herself for interrupting and insists on leaving her resume. The young woman was interested in a sales job; in my opinion, her persistence should have been applauded!
I read this book after hearing Barbara Ehrenreich speak on her latest book, Bait and Switch. What a contrast! Ehrenreich questions everything that Reardon takes for granted. Reardon warns against "showing up the boss (p 59), while Ehrenreich would point out that stifling disagreement wouldn't be in the best interests of the company in the long run. Reardon accepts corporate values -- or at least implies, "Hey -- that's the way it is." I can just see Ehrenreich rolling her eyes and raising her eyebrows.
There are a couple of minor bloopers on pages 66-67. On page 67 is a reference to Daphne Merion - I think she means Daphne Merkin, a rather outspoken writer for the New Yorker.
And I question Reardon's version of the story behind Madeline Albright's nomination as Secretary of State. Reardon seems to suggest that Albright got the job in part because of her connections to Clinton. But other sources suggest that Clinton actually resisted naming Albright until he was pressured by female legislators. And in fact, some have questioned whether others were equally qualified.
But perhaps the biggest criticism of this book is that, although insights are valuable, it's..well, dull! We need more war stories and more anecdotes. The material has the potential to be as gripping as a novel -- and Reardon's first book (They Don't Get It Do They) managed to come across as much more reasonable.
Superb.......2005-09-22
Excellent writing. Tireless advise to those in psychology, business, education, or just plain living with people.
Social skills count.......2005-09-20
This book is more evidence that success in social relationships is important to career success and meeting your personal and professional goals. Reardon does a nice job of breaking down this otherwise complex and cloudy subject into digestable chunks, and throws in a few self-assessment quizzes to boot.
In the first part of book, she discusses the gradients of politics at work, which can be very helpful in allowing the reader to discover what type of political animal they are, and also shedding light on seemingly "crazy" behavior at work. It's validating to learn that there are more "pathologically political" organizations than the company you may have had the misfortune of working for.
More importantly, Reardon goes on to outline how honing your observation, interaction and acting skills can contribute to your ability to move up within an organization. She is right about the in-group, out-group dynamics of the workplace, but people in the out-group often make the mistaken assumption that the in-group has conspired to create the social, cultural and organization norms that exist, when, in fact, the in-group has usually just evolved in response to various social, organizational and business pressures and personalities.
The most important lesson of this book is the idea that observing and emulating leaders, leadership culture and political norms is of critical importance in finding your place at the top of the org chart. Immitation is not only the sincerest form of flatery, it also demonstrates, through your actions, that you believe in the company and its people.
A Brilliant Beginner's Guide to Politics.......2005-08-31
As a professional motivational speaker I recommend this book to my clients.
Dr Reardon's book is an excellent introduction to the topic of corporate politics. It takes you from the beginning and helps you to think like an Office Politician. Whether your goal is to merely survive at the office or if it's to advance to the very top. You'll find something valuable in this excellent well-researched resource.
I definitely recommend it!
