Book Description
The extraordinary early nineteenth century gardens of Josephine Bonaparte at Malmaison are revealed in this lavish publication. One hundred and twenty colored stipple engravings depict a dazzling array of exotic plants from around the world, while the text tells the fascinating story of how the first wife of Napoleon I came to transform a modest estate on the outskirts of Paris into a botanical and zoological garden to rival the great Jardin des Plantes itself.
Keen to have these biological rarities recorded in lifelike watercolor, Josephine engaged the foremost plant illustrator of the day, Pierre-Joseph Redoute, to paint 120 of them on fine parchment, and commissioned Etienne-Pierre Ventenat, librarian of the Pantheon in Paris, to write accompanying plant descriptions. She then arranged for the text and illustrations to be published together as the Jardin de la Malmaison. A number of engravers were employed to produce colored stipple engravings after Redoute's watercolors, and the publication appeared in twenty installments between April 1803 and November 1805.

Customer Reviews:
Le Petit Powerhouse.......2007-01-10
Le Petit Larousse is like a miniFrench version of a cross between Webster's Dictionary and the Encyclpedia Britannica. The first side is a French dictionary with thousands of entries. The second half is an encyclopedia with thousands of articles on history, geography, biology, etc. Both sides have great diagrams and illustrations. It is a great tool for anyone wanting to learn and use the French language. One will find this book sitting in on the shelves of many French homes.
Petit Larousse.......2007-01-03
I received the dictionary promptly and it has been very helpful in my French studies.
Le Petit Larousse, Illustré.......2006-11-10
I am not fluent in French, so I beg your pardon but will conduct this review in English. This is a marvelous learning tool. It is remarkably well designed and incredibly informative. As a student of the French Language, it has been extremely helpful with my understanding of the French Culture, the French Language, and many of France's most important persons. This Book is both Dictionary and Encyclopedia. There is also a section regarding famous Latin phrases and their meanings, in french, which is both delightful and helpful. I am very impressed with this dictionary, and cannot laud its attributes enough, in so far as it excells in its particular design. This design, however, is not very suitable, in fact it is hardly suitable, as a general french dictionary for the average on-the-go student. It is very large, and while its binding is very strong, I daren't chance abusing it too forcefully because it is a little expensive to throw around in my back pack. If you are looking for a French dictionary for your home, for your office, or for a study room where you do not expect to transport it very often, then this is surely the dictionary for you. If you want something more akin to a good travel french dictionary, I would suggest something like "Le Robert Micro, edition poche," or one of the other Larousse french dictionaries. They will be smaller and still have very good information.
French for every need.......2006-08-01
This remarkable edition of an old favourite contains every word, every fact, every illustration that the student of French could want. The first section is an illustrated dictionary, useful for technical definitions of machinery, factories, plants etc. The second section contains proper names, places with illustrations and useful geographical and biographical information. This is a full time occupation book and definitely one for the desert island. It is in French only which is fine for those who know some French, as the definitions are in simple French. For learners a small French English dictionary would be a useful accessory.
Nothing 'Petit' about the contents of this dictionary!.......2006-03-22
This is a fantastic resource for students of the French language. The main portion of the dictionary is profusely illustrated and the French used in the definitions is not too difficult. My primary use for this has been to help me while reading literature and I can only say that it has been fantastic.
Near the back, there is a small section which resembles an encyclopedia. It has people, places & ideas which aren't really part of the formal language, but essential to understanding French culture. The space given to each entry is usually only a couple of sentences, but it is still incredibly helpful by giving me just enough information to understand the entry, but not overwhelm me with too much information and distract me from the reading which caused me to use the dictionary in the first place.
Book Description
Covering both the French language and general culture in one compact
volume, this handy all-around reference includes more than 40,000 words,
phrases, and expressions, with up-to-date vocabulary in all subject areas. Also included are 6,000 proper names and encyclopedic entries on geography, history, mythology, science, art and literature, and more. Usage notes throughout the dictionary and appendixes featuring verb conjugation tables, common proverbs, grammar notes, and communication models (such as sample letters) make this an essential resource for any student or speaker of French.

Book Description
The Group of Seven was formed in 1920. At an important time in Canada's history, these talented artists applied their creativity and passion to a visual celebration of Canada as a wild and eminently beautiful land. Their powerful landscape paintings would come to shape a country's long romance with its wilderness, and consequently its sense of identity. This calendar presents 12 distinctive masterpieces -- some more familiar than others. Founding member Lawren Harris wrote that the Group of Seven "loved this country and loved exploring and painting it." It is their shared concept of Canada as a northern nation for which they are best known. It is Canada's continued passion for the land and its natural beauty that grants modern relevance to the work of these exceptional artists.

Customer Reviews:
Good- Artwork Inconsistant.......2004-10-12
Noble Causes: In Sickness and in health is a romantic soap opera starring: you guessed it- super heroes! The primary romance is the romance between Race- and plain Jane bookstore owner Liz Donnelly. Add a few classic soap opera twists, including a blacksheep brother, a cheating spouse and a mystery baby and you have Noble Causes.
I enjoyed the story for the most part, although to be honest it was somewhat light. What I didn't like was the art. At times it was well drawn...Other times the art looked like the scrawling of a ten year old. Some characters were hardly recognizable from story to story- you'd think the artist had no reference to work from.
Still the story was fun, and the concept cool. Worth reading, but the artwork lacks consistancy which cost this story a star.
Yeah, there's some soap opera, but I really like this series.......2004-03-09
This series is about the dysfunctional superhero celebrity family of the Nobles. It begins when Liz, a normal woman, is going to marry into the family...then all kinds of drama begins. There are a lot of family and relationship issues going on in this series, and, yes, it may seem soap opera-ish to some. But ultimately it's a fun comic book that hasn't gained as much popularity as it deserves. I actually want to read the rest of the series after having read this trade paperback. It has drama, it has superheroes, it has comedy, it has action, it has romance...
Heroes meet soap operaýSoap Opera wins!.......2004-01-21
A "normal" woman marries into the Noble family, the world's most famous family of superheroes and complications ensue. Jay Faerber works in all the soap opera conceits, the cheating spouses, surprise pregnancies, murderous family members, and even that old SF stand by, the brain transplant. While Faerber's stated goal is to take a different look at the genre, he really only succeeds in transferring it to the realm of daytime dramas. With art by group of raw talents, NOBLE CAUSES is not so much different as it is derivative.

Prepare yourself for world-class flirting.
The French purport to be one of zee most romantic cultures, but my honey bunny, did you know that their terms of endearment include "mon petit chou" (my little cabbage) and "ma puce" (my flea)? Or that in El Salvador, lovers call each other "gordita" (fatty) and like it? All over the world, people in love call each other the strangest things. Now these curious sweet nothings have been collected in this charming book, How to Speak Fluent Lovey-Dovey in 11 Languages in 24 Hours. Thematically organized (animal, vegetable, huh?) and hand lettered/illustrated/designed by the author, this book is your passport to fluency in the international language of love (i.e. French, Spanish, Czech, Russian, Portuguese, Afrikaans, Polish, Japanese, Hebrew, English, German and Karenese!).

Read it.......2000-06-19
Naked is such a good movie; I could never praise it enough. So is it's script, naturally. Only in the script, you achieve an even greater experiece, since most of Mike leigh's genious lies in the depth of his dialogs. For those who find thie movie a life-altering experience like I do, to read the script is a must.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting take on some prominent leaders.......2006-12-08
I. Bibliographical Entry
Marquardt, M.J. and Berger, N.O. Global Leaders for the 21st Century. Albany, NY: State University of New York Press, 2000.
II. Biographical Sketch of Author
Dr. Michael Marquardt holds an Ed.D. from The George Washington University and is a well-known author on global leadership and organizational change. A leadership consultant, he has done consulting work for many of the companies and mentioned in this work, including Singapore Airlines, Cisco Systems, and Nokia. Nancy Berger is a former assistant professor of human resources development at George Washington University and is the coordinator of an adult education and human resources development program at Virginia Commonwealth University. This student found little information about Berger's education or scholarly work.
III. Summary of Contents
Global Leaders for the 21st Century profiles twelve leaders in diverse leadership positions around the world. Each leader is profiled through the framework of 8 "critical competencies" outlined in the text: 1) a global mindset, 2) learning and teaching skills, 3) a servant-steward relationship to one's organization, 4) systems thinking, 5) spirituality and a concern for ethics, 6) a willingness to embrace new technologies, 7) innovation and risk-taking, and 8) vision-building.
Each chapter deals with one of the twelve leaders, and each offers praise of the leaders' ability to lead in the current dynamic environment and posits them as potential great leaders of the 21st century. The structure is somewhat fluid given the 12x8 framework presented in chapter one. This fluidity allows the writers to focus on critical areas of each leaders' achievements and leadership skill without overdoing a "cookie-cutter" approach.
IV. Critical Evaluation
This work provides insight into some very prominent leaders in today's global environment. From political leaders to nonprofit leaders to corporate leaders, assessment using the 8-item framework allows the reader to analyze each leader in a uniform manner. These eight critical competencies are, however, difficult to quantitatively measure, which opens the work to criticism. For example, the fourth critical competency, a global mindset, may be measured differently for Kofi Annan than for Nobuyuki Idei based on their individual beliefs and backgrounds. Aside from measurement issues, the critical competencies have identification issues. No research is offered as to why or how the competencies are selected.
Review of Marquardt's biography reveals potential bias in that he has been paid for consulting work by many of the companies and countries whose leaders are identified in this work. The extensive use of charts and graphs on some of these companies and countries seems indicative of this consulting relationship. On the contrary, review of Berger's biography reveals very little. Aside from identification of her current position at Virginia Commonwealth University, this student was unable to find any other books or scholarly articles of Berger.
Finally, many of the leaders and organizations profiled in this work have experienced controversy and conflict since the work's publication in 2000. While it is true that no prominent leader avoids conflict and controversy altogether, the number of those affected by controversy and the magnitude of the controversy is striking: Lord John Browne of BP Amoco's handling of a refinery explosion in Texas in 2005, along with the Prudhoe Bay pipeline shutdown of 2006; Kofi Annan's handling of the Ruud Lubber sexual harassment case in 2004, and administration of the UN food for oil program in 2004; and John Chambers' settlement of a major class action lawsuit with Cisco stockholders in 2001 are a few examples of what many would deem leadership failures. Those in the fields of leadership, management, and policy development could benefit from this work.
are you ready for servant-leadership?.......2001-12-04
It's difficult to keep up with the new business management theories that come up, so I tend to shy away from most of them. Of course, if Peter Drucker writes something I'm quick to pounce on it. That being said, it was the status of the contributors themselves that lured me in to this great overview and analysis of servant-leadership. Stephen R. Covey and Ken Blanchard ("One-Minute Manager", "Who Moved My Cheese") offer great insight into a concept that actually has been around since the 1970's! Employee welfare is not to be undermined! If Stephen Covey already knows this, shouldn't we all get the clue? Recommended!
