Book Description
Steinman's book really stands alone among performance art books. While there are many that document what particular artists are doing, this one offers a way in for a person who wants to perform (or know more about how performance artists work). Must reading for anyone interested in performance art, it will also be fascinating to those in theatre, playwriting, visual arts and performance of any sort.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book on Performance!.......2000-12-27
Steinman's book really stands alone among performance art books. While there are many that document what particular artists are doing, this one offers a way in for a person who wants to perform (or know more about how performance artists work). The book is difficult to characterize: while not exactly a "how-to" manual, it inspired me to create new art and to think about how we tell stories with our bodies, with images, in front of an audience. Must reading for anyone interested in performance art, it will also be fascinating to those in theatre, playwriting, visual arts and performance of any sort. I lend mine out all the time (but it's one of a few among my many books that I make sure I always get back!)
Essential reading for shamans, performers, and humans........1997-03-08
For some reason, this book is still the only one of its kind, delving into the performance art philosophies of Meredith Monk, Barbara Dilley, Ping Chong, and Spalding Gray, just to name a few. Beautifully illustrated, this book explores dance and performance art from a kind of Jungian/shamanist/Buddhist perspective. You can learn from this book just what it means to be an artist--or just what it means to be alive

Book Description
Accepting Me from A to Z, Just As I Am presents the ABCs of how to love yourself as God loves youunconditionally. Dr. Sallie Middlebrook presents an inspirational and poignant account of how she won victory over her struggle with confidence destroying weight-related associations and issues. It offers personal examples and discussion about size, appearance, feelings, looks, stares, and how to remain resolute about reaching your dreamsin any dress size. It reminds you, in many different ways, about a most important consideration that can slip through your consciousness when you're involved in heated weight-loss battles. That consideration is: Just about anyone will accept you as you are, right now, in the body you're occupying, if you love yourself, because your appearance, size, and weight are less important than how you feel about you. And, before you can permanently change anything about you, inside or out, you must begin withinwith God, with love.

Book Description
Religions constrain the bodies of their members through dress. In many cases, dress immediately identifies a member of the community to the outside world and separates them from a society that members believe is threatened by evil forces. Dress identifies the wearer's community to other groups and communities, and may also reflect one's status. Most interestingly, perhaps, dress is a measure of one's level of commitment to the community. While communities vary greatly in terms of what is permissible, strict conformity to internal codes invariably is interpreted as a sign of piety, whereas deviation implies at best self-indulgence and at worst contempt for community values. In order to control sexuality, women's bodies in particular are constrained in religious communities in terms of emotional expression, diet, and especially dress. This book investigates dress in American religious communities as a vital component of the social control of cultures, and also examines how people express themselves despite religious constraints. Gender issues feature prominently since the control of female sexuality within religious communities is a matter of vital concern to its members. Drawing on rich ethnographic case studies, this wide-ranging and interdisciplinary represents a major contribution to the study of both religion and dress.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Look at Culture.......2000-01-01
This book lets us peek into the way cultures that have a religious base actually use clothing to express cultural values. The relationship between identity and how it is manifested by people and groups is the focus of this exciting book. Each chapter is by a different author who has done serious research. Some are historical studies, though most are ethnographic, an in-depth form of research. The American religious groups covered in the book include Amish, Mennonite, Mormon, Jewish, Catholic Nuns, African-American, Native American and even Muslims in Omaha.
Even though this book was done by scholars, it is easy to read and is quite enjoyable.

Religion, Dress and the Body (Dress, Body, Culture)
ASIN: 1859734804 |
Book Description
From Islam to Confucianism to Voodoo, dress plays a pivotal role in religious expression. This book investigates how dress symbolically evidences both religious and social systems across a wide range of cultures - from Africa and South America to Asia, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Caribbean. In some of these cultures, dress is part of a system of social control. Gender issues feature prominently since the control of female sexuality is often of great importance to the world's religions. Members of each ethno-religious group actively construct their own lives, and use dress symbolically. A central tenet for many of these groups is that the soul is visually manifested on the body through dress. Drawing on rich ethnographic case studies, this wide-ranging and interdisciplinary volume represents a major contribution to the study of both religion and dress.

Book Description
Greg Gagliardi began writing Progressive Revelations in January of 1998 while a student at Boston College and an editor of the school's newspaper, the Heights. Today, several years later, it remains one of the most widely read and longest-running weekly humor columns. Gagliardi's column continues to focus on connecting stream-of-consciousness thoughts to poke fun at the little things in lifethe very little things. This compilation includes some of the best columns from the early years of Progressive Revelations, from 1998 to 2003. New editions of the column can be read at www.ProgressiveRevelations.com.
Customer Reviews:
Good for fill-in reading.......2007-04-21
Reviewed by Sondra Fowler for Reader Views (3/07)
Greg Gagliardi writes, "When we want to hide important newspaper documents we should attach them to zebras so they blend in, rather than lock them up somewhere."
So you can bet he won't be pinning his weekly humor column "Progressive Revelations" on zebras anytime soon, as he wishes to share a collection of these columns in his book, "Hiding Newspapers on Zebras." The collection is made up of selections from Greg's early career at Boston College, including his very first revelation, through columns from 2003. He requests that you read this collection in short bursts, preferably in the bathroom. I think I know why. If you read this in large chunks as I did, the thoughts run in such a circle that they may cause your head to spin around like that girl in the exorcist movie, and we all know if you are going to be spewing green goo, it is best to do it in the bathroom. As you read the columns you will find he likes to visit Dunkin Donut, talk to electric eels and mentions squirrels, rabid and otherwise - a lot. Many subjects are visited, many ideas are shared, some are thought provoking, some a bit confusing, but usually amusing and entertaining. But most importantly you discover the importance of the comma in avoiding confusion and embarrassment.
"Hiding Newspapers on Zebras" is great to take places where you will be waiting for a minute here or a minute there, or as Greg suggested earlier - in the bathroom. I would avoid taking it in the bathtub though. I tried it. The pages got a little damp.
Clean.......2006-03-08
call me a sucker for good clean fun but that is what this is, which is how i found his site/columns thru a website a couple of years ago. dont get me wrong, i like eddie murphy and george carlin and the others as much as the next person, but this is something that you dont have to be ashame to put on your coffee table.
Short attention span theater.......2006-02-21
I love this because I can read one part at a time. This is a great book and funny because its so true. I cannot wait for a sequel!
rate the book.......2006-02-16
You need to rate the book, not a review by someone else. Anyway I really enjoyed this book. I read it in two days. It will cheer you up if you need the cheer.
Ouch! My head hurts........2006-02-16
What I have just read is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever gazed upon. At no point in the rambling, incoherent response was there even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on the internet is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Book Description
In The Eloquence of the Vulgar, the distinguished academic Colin MacCabe reflects on cultural change from Shakespeare to Derek Jarman, on the institutional forms of knowledge, on the links between popular and elite art, and on the role of the intellectual in contemporary life. A radical argument emerges from the book's diverse concerns. Cinema and television--the new and democratic art forms of the twentieth century--demand a fundamental rethinking of our concepts of language and culture. What is at stake is the very idea of a liberal and humane education.

Power in the right words. Life is what is perceived........2007-06-27
Lasting power is in relationship smarts. We can become more "powerful" when we put people up and make them feel good about their positive actions than if we react with a vengeance.
This book also teaches how to approach conflict. We could belittle the other person (or ourselves if we are criticizing ourselves) with poison words, or we could approach the problem with them knowing the problem, and having the drive to fix it.
The book also discusses how to ask for help in a way that makes people feel like a part of your team instead of being "dragged into doing another favor for you."
I recommend this book.
Thank you Meryl!!!.......2007-02-07
Your book has saved my professional and personal self-confidence with communicating. Usually my conversations and correspondence were long, drawn out, and the other person would get lost in "words." My tendencies were to get the "last word" in a conversation, sometimes with a little barb, thinking I was leaving a lasting impression. Wrong... Your book is a ready reference for phrases that are specific and short, but quick and to the point. Thank you for your saying: say what you mean, mean what you say, without being mean when you say it. That one phrase sums it up!
Maybe too much publicity and a colorfull cover........2007-02-01
Well, if you are a Neanderthal guy with no experience at all on comunnication with people on your own species, buy this book RIGHT NOW. On other hand, if you are even a little polite and educated this book will not tell you anything new. Anyway, if you are looking to increase your comunicattion skills, you could use one or two pages of the whole book. I think that it is too litle for 200 more pages. It is up to you.
Just What I Needed..........2004-06-20
This book is helping me tremendously at work and in my personal life. I had no idea how weak my language was. I was afraid to say what I thought and ask for what I want. I was always concerned that I would disapoint people out inconvenience them. This book helped me to learn how to communicate effectively while continuing to be a really nice person that gives and gets respect.
Powerful!.......2004-01-18
I love it! It's immediately practical and useful. I learned how to respond to my critical boss, assertively address a backstabber, and most importantly, convey my anger and disappointment without blamin the other person. That lesson alone was worth way more than the price of the book. What a value! I'm using what I learned in this book every day.
