Covering 50 years of fashion history, Dressing Up Vintage examines times past and what women wore in response to them. Starting with the '40s and the somber mannish suits worn during WWII, Dressing Up Vintage takes us through the beaded cardigans of the '50s, the mod explosion of the '60s, the '70s disco and wrap-dress rage, the broad-shouldered power suits of the '80s, and ends up with an understandably short chapter on the '90s and the popularity of the grunge look and retromania.
Spying and collecting vintage wear takes the same skill and competitive edge as does collecting fine art or antiques. Author Tracy Tolkien, owner of a very successful vintage shop in London, has been honing her hunting skills for many years and shares them with us in this thoroughly researched, entertaining book. She explains why certain fashions came into being and why they are now collectible. Did you know corsets came back into style because of Dior's wasp-waisted dresses? Tolkien also gives hints on where to find the best vintage wear (there's a long list of shops in the back of the book, both American and British) and what to look for (labels, tears, staining). "One of the best, often overlooked, sources though is probably out there in your own backyard," she says, "tucked away in the darkest corners of your friends' and relatives' wardrobes." Each section is filled with examples of vintage fashions, including hats, gloves, shoes, and costume jewelry.
An interesting journey into our fashion past--great finds and faux pas all--Dressing Up Vintage could be helpful to the beginning collector and just plain fun for those who like to browse, shop, and heed the words of mini-making mogul Mary Quant: "Fashion allows you to be what you want. You can dress the part and--my God, it happens!" --Dana Van Nest
Book Description
With vintage dresses like Marilyn Monroe's JFK birthday dress selling at auction for more than one million dollars, vintage is clearly "in". Dressing Up Vintage celebrates the best of old-school couture, offering tips on how to spot a valuable garment and how to distinguish one designer from another. an enormous "sources section" features over 600 stores around the world where devotees can purchase vintage clothing. If you love the look of a bygone era, this book is for you!
Customer Reviews:
fine vintage.......2003-04-06
This is not a book for grungy secondhand roses raking around the fleamarkets for funky bargain clothes but for the serious connoisseur of fine vintage this book is indispensable.
Disappointing.......2003-03-25
Although filled with beautiful photography of period styles, I found this book to be ultimately a disappointment--short on substance.
The introduction, where she states that "Basing a collection around thrift-store bargins is not only unrealistic, it can take days, weeks, literally years of your time." is the your first clue. The rest of the book is then devoted to extolling the virutes of couture and its designers. Fine for a small amount of those who can afford it, but unrealistic for the rest of the population.
Tolkien has a mere two pages to fashions of the 1940's (which she calls "simple" and "utilitarian" before moving on to the rest of the 20th century. She divides the various decades into the trends that defined them, but then lets the pictures do the work for her. Tolkien also devotes a part of the book to 90's fashion--a decade which most vintage wearers would not even consider to be "vintage" in the first place.
If you are looking for a very brief overview of late 20th century designer fashion, you might enjoy this book. If not, Amazon has plenty of other books on the subject that do a much better job.
a vintage gem.......2003-01-11
I think this is the best book that I've ever bought on vintage clothes. I love it and I've learned so much. A real find!
The Fashionista's Stone of Books on Vintage Clothing.......2001-09-23
What a wonderful find! This is a book that does everything it says on the tin and then some. Freely and beautifully illustrated with both period and commisioned photographs, it offers a cornucopia of images that cleverly demonstrates fashion, documenting & reflecting much of the past century.
The writing is witty and wise: intelligent & informative without being patronising & it is infectious in its enthusiasm. For someone like me, with alot more interest than knowledge in vintage clothing, what I really loved about it was its accessibility and how helpful it was with information- there are handy tips on the where's and how's of vintage shopping and dressing nestling in every corner. Because of the way that it integrates socio-economic and historical detail, it even makes for good reading if you're not that interested in the clothes themselves, as it offers a rich visual history, through clothing, of the century that was. It often seems that every other book is "the definitive guide to..." but this one is the genuine article. No cheap imitation this, it offers an assured overview of vintage style and an indispensible source list of web-sites and stores that sell vintage clothing. And it is so much fun to read.
Eye Candy for the Super Rich,, and Shallow to Boot.......2001-09-12
This book starts only at around 1940 and just gives a few glossy pictures for each decade. Models and model-lovers should love it, but it's really more about the culture of buying couture and outrageously priced clothing than it is about vintage. A big ho-hum, and a little bit of a ripoff for the money. Shallow, shallow, shallow.

A very helpful book for collectors and costumers.......2005-04-24
Note: my review is based on the first edition of this book.
I think this book is wonderful--the author has also written computer manuals, and so her directions are very clear. (Come to think of it, most computer manuals aren't that easy to understand--hers must be special!) The book covers a wide array of topics related to vintage fashion. I especially appreciate the segments on sewing techniques--she explains basic things that I haven't been able to figure out from other books, like how to lengthen a pattern, and more complicated techniques that are very helpful when dealing with vintage clothes, like how to replace a lining. The author includes a lot of helpful hints from her personal experience. The book is organized into different topics, so you can skip the ones that aren't relevant to your interests.
Nice costume book.......2004-01-21
I thought this was a useful book on costuming. There are lots of illistrations and detailed info, such as what style of lace, or what patterns were popular/available during the periods. Good buy, very helpful!
Most Practical and Resourceful.......2003-08-19
Best book I've found. Descriptions and illustrations for each historical period, as well as outfit planning, authentic fabrics, sewing and patternmaking tips, mending, restoring, and resources from A to Z -- books, websites, catalogs, periodicals... My #1 pick.
A book for use in real life.......2002-04-27
I'm a swing dancer and I love this book because it tells how to deal with vintage clothes you actually WEAR! Some books seem to think everybody who buys vintage clothes is some kind of museum. Or that they're rich and only buy perfect clothes in fancy boutiques. This book gives instructions for real-life cleaning, mending, and altering to fit you (for men's clothes too). And how to work with vintage patterns to make your own repros. This book ROCKS!
Could have done with this years ago.......2001-10-11
I wish I had know about this book years ago ! Needless to say I'm going to order copies for friends too. The layout is clear and easy to follow. The topic covered are comprehensive. There is plenty of information given to progress your knowledge further. All in all a great addition to the historic costumiers library.

Women Composers: The Lost Tradition Found (The Diane Peacock Jezic Series of Women in Music)
ASIN: 1573564117 |
Book Description
In the world of musical composition, men have long overshadowed women. But as the prominence of women composers increases, so does interest in their lives and works. This is the first substantive biographical reference book geared toward the student or non-specialist, featuring information on nearly 200 women composers of the Western music tradition from the 9th century to the 21st. Composers were chosen based on the excellence of their music, their importance in the period's daily musical life, and the availability of information on their lives, music, and recordings. Taken together, they represent a broad range of styles, countries, and eras. This book is a valuable resource for students from high school through university, and for anyone interested in musical history and composers. The book is arranged by style of music and chronology. Each profiled composer placed is related to the famous male composers, arts, sciences, and politics of her period. Profiles include biographical information and focus on the composer's work and association with other musicians. Also included for each composer are a discography of her recorded works (including a list of those available in modern editions) and a bibliography of additional print and electronic resources. Timelines place the women in historical context and appendixes organize them by country, century, and type of music. A syllabus of study is provided.
Book Description
Presented in a new edition that adds updated pattern industry news and revised rules for selecting pattern size, this easy and practical fitting system requires no measuring, no drafting skills, no muslin mock-ups—and it works with all brands of tissue paper patterns. Real people of all ages are featured in photographs that explain the steps of cutting out pattern pieces, pinning them together, and adjusting the fit. Special attention is paid to tricky challenges such as accommodating a full bustline, adjusting sleeves, or reworking a garment to make it more flattering, as well as alternative fitting methods such as draping and computer design. Metric conversion charts, charts for comparing pattern company bodice measurements, and a history of American dress design (Just where did size 10 come from?) make this book a versatile reference.
Customer Reviews:
fit for real people.......2007-09-12
I have been sewing since I was 10.My Mom passed away when I was 17 and I never had the opportunity to learn from her what the book teaches me. At first I was a little overwhelmed (Im an over achiever) and had to put the book down for a few days. Now, ITS MY BIBLE!!!
If you sew from patterns, you need this book........2007-07-23
This book helps you fit any pattern to your body. Full of lots of great tips. Very easy to understand and use.
Using their method, you first fit the paper pattern, adjust, try on, adjust if needed, cut your fabric, fit, finish, then have a great item of clothes.
great guide.......2007-07-19
I'm glad I got this book. The pictures alone can give you a great start to understanding pattern fitting. Photographs of real people of different sizes are shown with the pattern tissues on them. The corrections and explanations are then given to help you see and understand what is being done. It has information for many different body scenarios, especially for those of us who aren't built like runway models. It did seem to jump around a little. You may have to go to another section of the book to check on full explanations. I noticed that was just how the book was designed, and I was able to know where to look after awhile. Additional information on fitting is also included, which is always nice to have.
Fit For Real People.......2007-07-15
I own half a dozen fit books but this one is my bible. The instructions are clear and concise. Every homesewer should own this book.
Useful, practical help.......2007-01-09
If you've ever tried to make clothing and been frustrated that the finished product looked second-rate, you may find "a-ha moments" in many of the suggestions in this book. The instructions are clearly written and well-illustrated. Particularly helpful are the "diagnostics" to identify and correct problems in fitting.
Well worth the investment.
Product Description
Without a doubt, Southwest Airlines phenomenal culture has become the envy of most of American CEOs. The Dallas-based airlines unprecedented success, its ability to survive where others fail and its continued tradition of service excellence has garnered awards from every possible corner of a highly-competitive industry. The question is, how did it happen? After her retirement, Lorraine Grubbs-West -- a former Southwest Airlines VP -- took a look back at her 15-year tenure with Southwest Airlines. In her book, Lessons in Loyalty, she highlights some of the unique and successful business strategies that moved the company from an upstart start-up in a well-established field to more than 30 years of profitability and the recognized leader in todays passenger aviation industry. In view of the challenges that continue to confront American business today, this book may be as they say -- just what the doctor ordered. Its brevity, easy-to-read format and straight-forward approach makes Lessons in Loyalty a primer for any firm wanting to build a loyal workforce capable of making the right things happen. But Grubbs-West makes her book an interesting journey of indelible wisdom, as well, designed especially for the busy business leader.
Customer Reviews:
Lessons in Loyatly: How Southwest Airlines Does It.......2007-03-10
This book gives an entertaining background on SouthWest Airlines culture, and how Southwest uses interview and hiring practices to protect that culture. In addition, it describes some of the unique actions Southwest takes to be loyal to it's own employees. Loyalty is the net result.
A quick read.
A BUSINESS ANIMAL'S BOOK.......2005-11-19
THE AUTHOR TELLS THE STORIES WITH SUCH A MATTER OF FACT VOICE THAT IS EASY TO FOLLOW AND FUN TO KNOW HOW FROLICKY THE AIRLINE IS. WHEN ONE IS READING IT, S/HE THINKS THAT SOUTHWEST IS THE BEST PLACE TO WORK. I HAVE NOT HEARD MANY SAY SUCH NICE THINGS ABOUT THEIR OCCUPATION OR COMPANY.
GRUBBS-WEST RELATES TO HER READERS IN A WAY THAT IS COMFORTABLE AND APPEALING. CHAPTER 5 IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE - EVEN THOUGH THE WISDOM SPRINKLED LIKE NUGGETS THROUGHOUT THE BOOK IS GOOD FODDER FOR ALL BUSINESS ENDEAVORS - WITH ALL OF THE STORIES IN IT. I LAUGHED OUT LOUD AND LOVED THE ASPHALT STORY. ALSO, SHE IS BRAVE TO TELL ON HERSELF MAKING MISTAKES; YET IN DOING SO, SHE REVEALS THAT THIS IS THE CHARACTER OF THE EMPLOYEE THAT SOUTHWEST IS LOOKING FOR. I HAVE TO SAY IT IS IRONIC THAT THE AUTHOR'S NAME ENDS IN WEST LIKE THE COMPANY SHE LOVED WORKING FOR FOR SO LONG - MAYBE SUBCONCIOUSLY SHE'S MORE LOYAL THAN SHE KNOWS! IN THE BOOK, SHE TALKS ABOUT ONE OF THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT'S MIMICING THE "OSCAR MAYER" JINGLE AS "MY COMPANY HAS A FIRST NAME, IT'S S-O-U-T-H, MY COMPANY HAS A SECOND NAME, IT'S W-E-S-T..."
THIS BOOK IS A GOOD ONE FOR LEARNING ABOUT LOYALTY OF EMPLOYEES AND FOR TEACHING A COMPANY'S MANAGERS HOW TO MAKE THE WORKPLACE FUN AND PRODUCTIVE.
weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2005-11-14
Lessons in Loyalty is a fascinating book to read. For years, Southwest Airlines has become a legendary example of the power of servant leadership principles. Its achievements are impressive considering the competitive, cut-throat airline industry in which it thrives. Southwest Airlines has been named "one of the "Top Five Best Companies to Work for in America" by Fortune Magazine, It also has had the fewest customer complaints 18 years in a row as reported by the DOT Air Travel Consumer Report. The Southwest Airlines has been profitable for 31 consecutive years, named the "2nd Most Admired Company in America by Fortune Magazine, and has an average employee turnover rate of less than 10%. If you made a $10,000 investment in Southwest Airlines in 1972, it would be worth more than $10 million today. Are you impressed yet? How they did this is a captivating read and the author tells gives us the real reasons.
Lorraine Grubbs-West was a senior executive for Southwest Airlines for over 15 years. Lessons in Loyalty is an "insider's" view of work and life at the successful airlines. She discloses that what makes Southwest Airlines exceptional is "the strong employee and customer loyalty it has developed - a feeling of devotion, duty and attachment to Southwest". Most organizations would like to achieve this exceptional level of loyalty, yet they consistently perform actions that alienate people rather than foster loyalty. The author provides 9 Loyalty Lessons (Chapters) that outline the positive principles that have made the airline a winner. Some of the lessons include thought-provoking titles like "Hire Attitude - Train Skills", "People Give as Good as they Get", "Luv "Em in Tough Times", "Do What's Right", and "Nurture the Corporate Family".
Lessons in Loyalty is written with the same enthusiastic spirit and confidence that has made the airlines a phenomenon. There have been a number of fine books written to explain how and why Southwest Airlines has risen to the top tier of corporations. This excellent book, from the perspective of a former employee, is easy to read and reveals some exceptional principles not discussed in other books on the subject.
