        Book Description

In Market à la Mode, Erin Mackie examines the role that The Tatler and The Spectator, two eighteenth-century British lifestyle magazines, played in the growth of fashion and how they influenced their readers. She traces the commercial context in which they operated, focusing on the processes of commodification, fetishization, and revisions of gender identity. Mackie's study makes clear that fashion publications, far from being commentaries on passing trends, assumed a leading role in defining women's legitimate sphere of activities as well as in the development of commerce as recreation.

The most popular Pokmon character - Pikachu - was the subject of the first Pokmon comic miniseries. In this story, the human trainer journeys to Pewter City, where a Pokmon is wanted for vandalism. Can our hero catch (as well as make friends with) the electrical Pikachu?

In this issue of Pokemon Adventures, Red arrives in Pewter City, only to find a Pikachu who's stirring up quite a bit of trouble. Luckily, by using his Bulbasaur, Red captures the Pikachu. Soonafter he runs into Gary, who challenges him to a contest to see who can defeat Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader, first. And we also get to see the first appearance of everyone's favorite(or hated, your choice) feisty red-head, Misty! Red comes to the rescue as Misty is being attacked by an out-of-control Gyarados, and soon they band together on their journey. The Pokemon Adventures manga is based heavily on the Pokemon RPG videogame, so there's alot of similarities here. You should buy this if you're a fan of the game, or Pokemon in general.

This book is great!red walks into pewter city and sees a wanted sign of Pikachu, who is messing up there town. So then Red decides to help and trys capturing the wanted Pikachu....... Then Gary comes and Challenges Ash the Challenge is Who will get the Boulder badge from Brock....... Then trys to help misty with her Gyardos... That's all i'm going to write.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the usual Pokemon written material.......1999-12-01

This book is definately another series, with a different set of Pokemon for Ash (though Pikachu behaves in the familiar method from the cartoon, shocking everything in sight). This book covers Ash's attempts to gain the boulder badge and collect more Pokemon. It's fairly well-written, with good artwork, and a great story line with the Pokemon reacting and being as interesting as the characters, and I don't just mean Pikachu.

"My granddaddy would get mad at all of us. He couldn't just get mad at one of us. 'Ain't nobody got...
You know what? Go to bed! All y'all, go to bed!'
It'd be like two o'clock in the afternoon. 'Go to bed!'"

Bernie Mac, the royal king of the Original Kings of Comedy, is salty and pissed off. The Chicago-bred performer has issues to get off his chest, and he doesn't mince words when he lets loose. No surprise, his live appearances have earned him a reputation as perhaps the truest voice of modern humor. Now, Mac has captured his comedic genius in print with his hilarious debut book.

Tearing through a wide range of topics with equal parts insight and irreverence, Bernie Mac shares views that may not sit well with everyone -- especially if you're caught in the crosshairs of his rants ("Kids today don't get the kind of injuries we used to get as children -- cut, bruised. Now, these lil' muh'fuckas just continuously get shot"). Still, his way of looking at the world will probably make you think and it's all but guaranteed to make you laugh. Taking on superstar athletes, the movie business, his fellow comedians, his marriage, and his friends and family ("You always knew when your grandmother was at home because her wig was on that little Styrofoam stand"), Mac unleashes side-splitting riffs on sex, religion, hygiene, money, and more.

Nobody is safe; nothing is sacred. Not even Bernie himself. Throughout I Ain't Scared Of You, Mac turns his humor inward, firing off self-deprecating salvos about his golf game, his own personal hypocrisies, even his sexual prowess -- "Women got toys...You can't compete with no dildo."

Mac's insights have earned him critical acclaim and international popularity. Now, I Ain't Scared Of You captures Bernie Mac's humor whole -- unadorned, unpretentious, and unafraid.

        1 out of 5 stars Terrible!.......2004-09-12

I listened to this as a book on tape, read by the author. I liked Bernie and looked forward to listening to this. However, after the first few chapters I was bored out of my mind and after a few more, I was disgusted by his language and detailed references to sexual acts regarding his daughter. Of the four CD's, by number three, I threw the CD's in the garbage where they belong! I didn't laugh once - not even a chuckle. Spend your money on something more valuable - like dirt!

5 out of 5 stars This is hilarious.......2003-11-28

If you love to laugh you must get this tape! To hear Bernie read this audio tape is just downright hilarity. Bernie is the best comedian out there today. He tells it like it is. People dont like when people tell it like it is. I guess thats why this tape has not got a 5 star review all the way around.

Now,if you have the book thats cool. But you must get the audio tape or cd. Bernie is hilarious. He covers everything from growing up in the hood. Why he wont go back to the hood-or should I say remember were you came from. He comments on his family,funerals,sex,relstionships-I had tears running down my eyes with the THOR story and every time Bernie yells out "Down goes Frazier!" He also comments on other comedians-why he would kill Moe from the three stooges. Lending money, and on and on and on.
If you like to laugh, you have to have this tape. I will buy the book also, just to have around, but I will listen to this tape until it wears out then I will go get another one. Bernie is the funniest man on the market right now. He will be around for a long time.

        3 out of 5 stars Poor organization........2003-03-03

I agree, the book is put together poorly.

There were a few jokes that I wanted to go back and read, but it's too much of a hassle to find them, and all the chapters read the same, with many of the jokes repeating.

...pretty funny, but not worth the [money]they charge here.

        2 out of 5 stars Not Good.......2003-01-14

I'm a huge fan of Bernie, that is why I am so disappointed with this book.

Before you buy this book wait until you go to a bookstore and thumb through the last chapter, which is sizable. You'll see the book is completely unorganized. Bernie will start off talking about his wife and as he gets going he'll suddenly switch to talking about racism for a sentence, then sex for two sentences, then his sister's drug habit for a sentence, then how his daughter is going to college for a sentence, all in half a page with no connecting theme or idea of any kind. Kind of a stream of thought type of writing. Just a totally random narrative. Very difficult to read.

Also, many, many words being shorten with an appostrophy after it "wo' ya' stop dat' Berine." Yes, I know Bernie talks like this, and there is nothing wrong with it, it is just that it did not translate well from hearing Bernie say it to reading it.

The big sin is when the book starts using the same jokes with only slight changes. It also uses the same picture twice. Seriously, I thought I bought a misprint; didn't I see this picture before? Didn't I read this joke before? Oh ya, I did, here, it is about 40 pages back! I think they did this because the book is short and need some more pages.

Regardless, I spent $ for this? Bernie has a great story that needs to be told. The background he came from was harsh, and how he became one of the funniest men around is a victory for the human spirit. If you just *have to* get this book, get the audio version, my guess is it would be somewhat better to hear Bernie tell it. Otherwise, let's hope his next book is better.

2 out of 5 stars Bernie Mac could have put together a better book.......2002-10-07

I have been a big long time fan of Bernie Mac for many years now but this book is a disappointment.Bernie Mac has a great show on Television every week as well as some great movies but this book is not what I expected Bernie Mac to put out.The sentences in this book are put together like they are from a little kid just learning how to use english for the first time.Bernie Mac is still an Original King of Comedy and I will continue to be his fan and support him but this book is just flop he will have deal with in his career.

One of the most important books in documentary studies in the past few years, "States of Emergency" is well-written, profound, and disturbing. Zimmermann is opening a whole new angle on the field.

We urgently need a new world image order!

(If that's not a call to arms, I don't know what is!)

So begins Patricia Zimmermann's wonderfully, powerful new expose on the current state of the world. Right from the start I was amazed at how she was able to capture an incredible amount of energy and emotion in such a simple way. The introduction absolutely blew me away. The urgency she created is unlike anything I have ever read before ... honestly. I felt like she was sitting right there in front of me, trying to drill it into my brain. AWESOME.

You have to realize, that this kind of power and urgency does NOT exist anywhere outside of academia (that I can think of). It doesn't happen in the workplace, it doesn't happen on the news, and it's doesn't happen on Oprah. It's AMAZING.

And, hello, women aren't supposed to talk like this. Especially moms that wear fashionable clothes that need to be dry-cleaned. She is taking on transnational corporations, nation states, and rich white dudes ... if I were her publisher, I would be fitting her for a bullet-proof vest right now. Hello!

Do not be fooled by any attempt at categorizing this book, they do no justice here. Zimmermann covers nearly 20 areas of studies, from film to finance from politics to health care. Think about it, how can one talk about issues in the world today without overlapping these areas of study? They are all intertwined! Zimmermann exposes the seams of the simple cause and effect relationship and why it has NEVER existed. Be ready, it will rock your world.

You know what's really incredible, Zimmermann has recorded the history of the public space in the later part of the twentieth century. She did it, it's right there! What other document has done this? Do you know how incredible that is? Do you know how many people don't want the public to know what happened? It is now impossible for them to try to re-write history. She snuck in the backdoor. There is no need to theorize about what happened, she just wrote it all down for future generations to see. That's amazing.

4 out of 5 stars This is Music Appreciation on a world level- old but good!.......1999-01-07

David Reck's "Music of the Whole Earth" remains one of the great staples for learning about how and why the world's peoples make music. Originally published in the 1970's, Da Capo Press has now intelligently elected to reprint this gem. Richly accompanied by Carol Reck's photographs, "Music of the Whole Earth" may at first appear to be a coffee table book. Don't let this style (in pictures and prose) fool you. There is a tremendous quantity of meat here. In fact, I highly suggest this text for required adoption on the undergraduate General Education university level. Be advised: if you are an instructor, there are no safety nets; you must know your music culture areas. David Reck will not help you with the grand world tour: he starts with musical universals and moves to worldwide examples. You must be prepared to fill in the gaps of cultural relativity. However, students may well love the lack of stuffy syntax and the inclusion of ecstatic prose. Just one caveat: this text is not without mistakes and even a few errors. Be on guard for 'golly gee, it's just wonderful' descriptions, and the tendency to infer that there are more musical universals than we have a right to take for granted. Overall, this is an A+ classic for learning about the elements of music as they are practised on our shrinking globe.dw

5 out of 5 stars Puts Miller's Book to Shame.......2007-06-14

Easily one of the BEST books I've read on sports handicapping. Dan Gordon is a legitimate pro gambler (unlike JR Miller author of "How pro gamblers beat the football point spread") who understands how to win. The part of the book called the "pro bettors toolkit" provide the reader with genuinely good advice which if followed properly should lead to more winners than losers. I wish he went into detail on how he makes a Letter Rating but that is just something that I am going to have to come up with on my own. For handicapping the NFL this is the only book you'll need but for other useful information I would suggest Donny P's book "win more lose less" and Stanford Wong's "Sharp Sports Betting". I definitely believe this book will help increase my ROI this coming NFL season.

5 out of 5 stars a master handicapper explains his craft.......2006-12-14

Dan Gordon's updated NFL handicapping book is the kind of book one doesn't so much read as study. Handicapping the NFL over a period of many years is hard work, serious work, and Gordon takes it very seriously. Properly done, it ends up amounting to a part-time job. We are not talking about making easy money betting on football.

The first point, which might be obvious to bettors but bears repeating, is that football odds as set by oddsmakers are not meant to predict the actual outcome of the game - they are meant to attract equal distributions of money bet on each side, and this is not the same thing. They have their customers, the casinos, offshore and (illegal) local books to think of. You are not their customer. There are thus opportunities for discrepancies to exist which the bettor will be able to exploit for profit.

Gordon reviews how oddsmakers come up with the line, the various regular and more exotic bets available (on which he spends very little time until the very end of the season), and the odds both mathematical and psychological/social working against the would-be winning bettor. This is all very clearly explained and well written. Further, he assesses various information sources that amateur bettors use, usually to their financial loss, such as much major media, touts, some sports services and professional commentators, all of which generally talk a good game but when their win/loss records are finally revealed are shown to be highly problematic. Worse, they tend to judge themselves against a 50% win/loss barometer, when of course the winning bettor must clear 53% just to stay even.

Further, not only knowledge and applied research, but also timing of bets proves to be highly important. Gordon is honest enough to show numerous cases where he had early access to better prices or numbers, or where these evaporated so quickly, he could not recommend a game to his service customers as that line no longer existed. In game after game one sees how a point or 1 1/2 point difference in the spread means the difference between a winning and losing bet. The NFL teams are very very close in quality overall. Personal discipline in passing on games where the number is close but not quite good enough to bet is important to long term success as well.

In the heart of the book, Gordon's handicapping system, he examines not only hard statistics, but leans heavily towards psychological motivations and factors. There is no factor one can think of to which he does not assign some value, a half point here and a half point there. He explains his starting points for the season using both letter and numerical power ratings, and how he updates each team after each game, every step of the way. The book holds seemingly nothing back.

The last half of the book follows first the Bills through the entire 2002 season, applying the factors of his system to every game they would play, whether he bet on it (and why) or not (and why not). Then he follows the full 2004 season, for each bet he made or contemplated seriously, doing the same, through the Super Bowl and a couple of proposition bets. If one were serious about learning his system, it would be worth the investment of many hours to 'replay' that system on paper, using his methods, and following how he came up with these ratings. At the end of the season he was indeed winner, though relatively modestly so.

Gordon's book is highly recommended for anyone who wants to get serious about handicapping NFL football, and stop simply throwing his money away on hunches or following the crowd.

4 out of 5 stars Solid book for the new to intermediate NFL bettor.......2006-06-22

Beat the Sports Books by Dan Gordon aims to provide the reader with weapons to beat the number in the NFL. Gordon seemingly covers it all in this book. For a beginning to intermediate bettor, this book should provide a solid return on investment.

In Beat the Sports Books Gordon covers all of the betting basics. Topics include a discussion on offshore/internet sportsbooks. Gordon also covers the odds, how the bet against the spread, and how the line is moved.

Gordon then moves on to explain methods for which he uses to handicap an NFL game. An explanation of letter power ratings along with combining them with number power ratings is covered.

The real meat to Beat the Sports Books is the chapters that are a part of "the pro bettor's toolkit". Gordon covers a wide array of subjective situations the bettor can use to find value against the spread.

The only downside to Beat the Sports Books is that it doesn't provide a technique for creating a mathematical power ranking / line based on team performance. Also, Gordon shows little to no interest in totals handicapping. Never fear, though, as books such as J.R. Miller's How Professional Gambler's Beat the Pro Football Pointspread do a fine job.

Gordon provides a solid look at money management, showing the reader that there's more to being a long term winner than simply handicapping. The final sections of Beat the Sports Books provide the reader with a detailed look at actual situations Gordon has encountered during a betting season.

Dan Gordon is a professional level bettor that "gets it". Beat the Sports Books should be a great addition to the serious NFL handicapper's bookshelf.

3 out of 5 stars One of the better books on NFL Sports betting.......2005-10-04

I find Gordon's book to be one of the better books on how to find winners vs the line. However, the suggested approach is at some points described in a less than cristal clear fashion.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, very in depth.......2005-08-12

This book tells you how to handicap NFL games. In order to properly handicap games, you have to do a lot of research and work. This book tells you how to do that.
This book is for anyone, beginner or expert, who wants to put in the time to research and study NFL games. If you don't want to spend a lot of time, don't buy this book.
However if you are interested in really learning to handicap, this book is very detailed and thorough.

1 out of 5 stars One handicapping method you don't have time for .......2004-10-23

First, I do not recommend this book for the beginner. However, I do recommend it for the serious handicapper who is interested in designing a new method for handicapping NFL games. Gordon's book would give one detailed insight into one professional's perspective.

Second, while there is useful information on trends, the primary focus is dedicated to creating one's own lines. His method, though detailed, is unrealistically complex. There are several conversion tables involving values Gordon claims to have validated over the years. The amount of manual effort needed to duplicate his recommendations is cumbersome, open to interpretation and, therefore, severely prone to error. If a computer application program were available to do the calculations, based on regularly downloaded data, I might be persuaded to study it. Otherwise, I seriously doubt anyone would take the time to do it as described.

Third, according to independent reviews, Gordon's performance as a tout is, at best, only par with most others - about 55%. For example, in one review authored by Colin Caster dated 12/04/02 wrote: "...Incidentally, his current record on sides and totals is 27-31-2, a record at or below which one would expect a 57.5% handicapper to fall less than 7% of the time..." So even with exotic statistical manipulations, the end result is not much better than flipping a coin.

On the up side, I do agree with one principle Gordon stresses: A handicapper should have an independent method of setting lines so as to be able to determine the "value" of a potential bet once the official lines are published. As for the typical weekend gamblers, with a lot of other priorities such work and family matters, I would recommend a computer program that will do the grunt work for you. There are several such program products available ranging from $10 to $200. Though more costly, these would be more useful immediately while saving time for more important matters.

4 out of 5 stars How to Handicap NFL Games.......2003-03-08

Whether this book would be helpful to you, the potential NFL bettor, depends largely on what kind of information you are looking for. Beat the Sports Books is primarily devoted to teaching the reader how to handicap his/her own NFL games -specifically, how to make your own lines. The author, Dan Gordon, has over 20 years of experience handicapping and betting on NFL games and gives the reader the benefit of this experience. He explains, in considerable detail and with many examples, how to calculate your own lines and power rankings and how to determine which bets are worth making. This is an in-depth course in line-making and takes concentration and persistence to fully absorb. The author also devotes one chapter to pointers for betting at different stages in the NFL season, which is simpler and might be worth considering even if you don't intend to make your own lines.

62 of the book's 165 pages are appendices. Appendix 1 follows one NFL team through an entire season in order to illustrate the finer points of calculating a team's power ranking over the course of a season. The second Appendix contains a full season (1996) of bets that the author made with explanations of why he made each bet. Included are some bets that he didn't make and reasons that he passed on those. The appendices could prove to be invaluable references if you intend to get serious about NFL betting, especially betting over the long haul.

There is some information in this book that is not about handicapping. The title of the book's first chapter is: "How Pro Football Is Bet and How the Point Spread is Set". It includes explanations of different kinds of bets (spreads, over-under, parlays, parlay cards, reverses, teasers) and explanations, with examples, of how the Las Vegas Sports Consultants set their lines each week. In chapter 2, the author goes on to explain how the media can affect betting, how touts work... These chapters contain a lot of interesting information that would be useful to both serious and casual NFL bettors.

Beat the Sports Books is really dedicated to teaching you how to determine what bets to make. There isn't much advice on precisely how to place those bets beyond the author's emphasis on trying the get the early lines and shopping for a fair price on your bet. There are no lists of sports books or internet casinos or instructions in how exactly to communicate what you would like to bet once you've found one. The information in Beat the Sports Books would seem to be intended for the relatively experienced bettor.

I'll risk repeating myself here, just to be clear: Beat the Sports Books is a lesson in handicapping NFL games with an overwhelming emphasis on making your own lines. Dan Gordon provides the reader with detailed instruction in the methods that he uses to calculate lines, based on over 20 years of experience as an NFL bettor. There is relatively little advice on other methods of handicapping. If you would like to be able to calculate your own lines in order to exploit the errors of the lines the sports books use, this is the book for you!

5 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read for predicting stock trends.......2005-11-04

Harry Dent really made a spectacular call back in 1993 in this book about the tremendous rise in the Dow during the 90's. He even predicted the slump in 2002-2003. His ideas of why this happened are presented in a simple theme that I found very intuitive. This book is a gem.
As for other books by Mr. Dent, he decided to contradict himself and go for very unrealistic goals for the Dow. Read this book and ONLY this book. Too late to make a killing on the stock market but still time to get out of stocks before the coming slump.

          4 out of 5 stars An Update.......2003-10-21

An update on this 1992 book "The Great Boom Ahead" from the perspective of 2003. First, Harry Dent is the eternal optimist and this earlier book correctly predicted the bull market of the 90s, while Robert Prechter, Martin Weiss, Nick Guarino, etc. were all wrong (in their timing at least) in predicting a downturn and depression to occur. But wait....the 2000-2002 downturn that cost so many investors money has at least opened a few eyes. And on pages 16, 18 and 34-36 of this book Harry Dent himself predicts the "Mother of all Depressions" to arrive around 2010, when the baby boomers' spending spree is over and they begin to retire. So the eternal optimist Harry Dent AGREES with the eternal pessimists and "doom-n-gloomers" about the inevitable outcome. They just disagree on the timing. So somewhere between 2004 - 2010 we can expect the largest downturn in U.S. history since 1929-1932. Enjoy the rest of the boom !!

          5 out of 5 stars A Real Eye Opener.......2002-01-05

Well supported by fact and Examples. Just wish I had read it years earler as I could have saved many $. I just couldn't put it down. Now I wouldn't be without it.

          5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-10-03

Harry S. Dent, Jr.'s book is remarkable both for the overall accuracy of its predictions and for the simplistic model upon which those predictions depend. Written in 1993, it claims a niche within the general family of "trend" books written by the likes of Alvin Toffler and John Naisbitt. The work anticipated our current era of super bullish markets, which it predicts will continue through 2007. The crystal ball drops a few items, given that a few years have passed since publication. Nonetheless, it offers a clear macroeconomic forecast and investment tool. If you sense the Fed just doesn't get the New Economy, this is the book for you. We [...] recommend this book to those seeking to understand the United States' era of record-breaking economic gains (and Japan's current hard times).

          2 out of 5 stars Where's Gen X or Silent Generation???.......2001-04-22

It was interesting book and having read it in 2001, I can see that many of his simple forecasts in the 90's are often on the mark. However there are many flaws that reflects his boomer navel-gazing. Why, I wonder, did Dent never chart the population surges of Silent Generation or Generation X? Moreover, where did all the immigrants disappeared to? Did they fell into the black hole after entering America? What about the inner-city blacks with unusally high crime-imprisoned rate? What about the endless resources from nanotech, biotech, and outer space? What about the cracking of welfare states now that communism is no longer a threat? I am sure that if Dent have charted all these information, the picture will look striking different. For example, many boomers prided themselves on being "largest generation". Based on simple birth rate, this is correct, but the picture is incomplete. The busters or Gen X may have smaller birth rate, but far higher immigrantion since the 60's, particulary after Vietnam War when many young people and children escaped dictatorships from Asia and Eastern Europe. Taken together, the Gen X is actually a far larger generation in simple numbers than so-called Boomers. At same time, it also have smaller capital to start business with and must struggle with crack-up of welfare state at same time. Yet, the Xers are more likely and more willing to start businesses and freelance than Boomers who must deal with downsizing from comfortable white and blue collar jobs that they were trained for all their lives.

So as far as I am concerned, there may be a big recession as the boomers retired (certainly, there will certainly be a death of welfare state by that time, and with it, the politics as the driving force of economy) but there will not be a great depression like or greater than that of the 1930's.
