This is a lavish picture book, meant to inspire and delight the reader with the vibrant colors of Mexican architecture, design, home furnishing, art, and artifact. Mexico is color incarnate, and Amanda Holmes's gorgeous full-color photographs bear this out graphically and spectacularly, showcasing everything from grand architectural facades to tiny decorating touches that enliven a corner; bring life to a small, dark room; or pull the brilliance of the sun indoors. Mexican culture uses color to dramatic effect in textiles, clothing, homes, markets, contemporary and folk art, interior design, and modern and ancient architecture. The author calls Mexico "the resting place of the rainbow," and the vibrant pictures and lively text of this beautiful book prove her right! --Mark A. Hetts
Customer Reviews:
rich and warm walls of color.......2001-08-04
"Mexico, a resting place for the rainbow" writes essayist Elena Poniatowska in this book centered on the subject of color. What makes the wonderful photographs by Amanda Holmes special and interesting is her way of seeing through the camera lens...in close-ups and unique angles. Categorized into themes, chapter # 1 is "The New World", with the fabulous wall paintings at Cacaxtla and Teotihuacan. # 2: "People of the Sun" focuses on some beautiful churches, as well as a few walls and doors. # 3: "A Sky Blue Balcony", has close-ups of brilliantly hued walls, balconies and building details. # 4: "The Brown Madonna", has everything from church niches to marketplace candies and more muli-colored walls. # 5: "The Space of Light", on modern Mexican architecture, and the colors that bring so much warmth to its clean, stark lines...with some of my favorite combinations, like apple green and bright pink...and that deep yellow that contrasts so well with the blues and aquas.
The essays that are with these photographs are interesting and strangely poetic. At first I found the writing somewhat peculiar, then realized it's translated from the Spanish (by Aurora Camacho de Schmidt) in an almost literal manner...but once you get into the rhythm of it, is excellent.
This hardback edition seems bigger than 160 pages because of its weight, with good quality thick pages, it's a sturdy volume. This book is much more about color than it is about Mexico, and for those of us who love color, it's a satisfying volume.
Colorful Fun!.......2000-08-12
Oh, this book was fun to look at. Looking at the ever so daring colored homes brings a sence of jealousy..Why can't I do that :-)but this book is for entertaining, not for educating. It has lovely photos, great colors of bulidings and walls. Text does accompany the photos mind you, if gives you a brief background to the style, but When you are going to paint your porch orange, and your stairs blue, and your walls exterior fushia, do you need an explaination?? Have some fun!
disappointing.......2000-03-21
If you enjoy beautiful photography for its own sake, this book is gorgeous; but if you want to see photographs of Mexican houses, interiors and folkcrafts, save your money. A big disappointment.

For True Needlework Fans.......2001-02-04
This is the type of book you buy as a reference work, even though many of the fashions and projects are quite dated. Some of the outfits would look good in a Victoria Magazine spread.
The instructions for the techniques are presented in an easy-to-understand way, and you never know what will come back in style these days. All of the projects are shown in color
Those who like to do needlepoint and cross-stitch will find many charts, while the knitting and crochet designs are so-so, although there is a cute knitted miniature sweater pattern. Quilters might also find the stuffed flowers interesting.
Buy more for the techniques, rather than the projects.

Book Description
Challenging audiences and leaving critics in disarray, the films of Oliver Stone have compelled viewers to reexamine many of their most revered beliefs about America's past. Like no other filmmaker, Stone has left an indelible mark on public opinion and political life, even as he has generated enormous controversy and debate among those who take issue with his dramatic use of history.
This book brings Stone face-to-face with some of his most thoughtful critics and supporters and allows Stone himself ample room to respond to their views. Featuring such luminaries as David Halberstam, Stephen Ambrose, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Walter LaFeber, and Robert Rosenstone, these writers critique Stone's most contested films to show how they may distort, amplify, or transcend the historical realities they appear to depict.
These essays--on Salvador, Platoon, Wall Street, Born on the Fourth of July, The Doors, JFK, Heaven and Earth, Natural Born Killers, and Nixon--enlarge our understanding of Stone's films, while also giving us a fuller appreciation of the filmmaker as artist and intellectual. They reveal how Stone's experience in Vietnam colors his views of American government and corporate culture and suggest new ways of looking at the complex tensions between art and history that shape Stone's films.
In response, Stone offers an articulate and passionate defense of his artistic vision. Disavowing once and for all the mantle of "cinematic historian," Stone declares himself first and foremost a storyteller, a dramatist and mythmaker who deliberately refashions historical facts in pursuit of higher truths. The undeniable centerpiece of this artistic manifesto is Stone's fascinating commentary on the making and meanings of JFK, the film that reopened a case that many thought finally closed.
A provocative and timely reexamination of a great American artist, Oliver Stone's USA will also reignite public debate over the relationship between history and art as well as the artist's responsibility to his audience.
Customer Reviews:
Great Work Of Debate And Intellectual Issues........2001-07-01
Oliver Stone is one of the most brilliant and provocative filmmakers working today and in this book we get a great taste of the debate over his work from both sides of the field. The book as a whole is very readable and never boring. Stone fans (like myself) and Stone bashers alike will get a good kick out of this book. The essay and responses to critics that Stone writes are fascinating, informative and speak to the free intellectual spirit and as in his great movies, Stone comes out as a man who really is aware of how the world works. I admire his writing here because it is an encouragement to people to educate themselves and read and do their own research and open their eyes. This book can be provocative intellectually and generally. The critics of Stone here also make some points, but not strong enough in my opinion, Stephen Ambrose comes off as a false historian who does not look at historical events from more than one angle or opinion. Stone easily dismisses his weak attacks. There is also a great deal of good dissection of the Stone films mentioned here which range from "Salvador" to "Nixon." Rock enthusiasts will like the article dealing with Stone's film on Jim Morrison, "The Doors" and Stone's own comments on Morrison and his music. The most provocative articles are those on the two most fiery political films Stone has made, "JFK" and "Nixon." These are provocative pieces because Stone challenges our views of official history and dares us to look behind the veils of the news, historians and some writings. This is not just a book for film buffs or Stone fans and critics, it is a book for people who enjoy good, smart debating and dissections of intellectual arguments. I enjoyed it because it is a breather for people looking for a really smart book. And yes, film buffs should definately read it because it deals greatly with how movies handle fact and fiction and it has important things to say on the role of the cinema in society and art in general. A fascinating, provocative and enjoyable book.
Junk.......2001-04-27
Oliver Stone slandered an innocent man in the film JFK. The greatest film critic of all, Pauline Kael, said Stone was a lousy screenwriter, and she's right. And Oliver Stone's response at the end of the book to Gerald Posner's book on the JFK assassination CASE CLOSED (that proves convincingly that Oswald was a lone gunman) is just absurd!! Every sin Stone says Posner committed--and in fact did not commit in most cases--Stone committed a million times more in JFK! I've rarely seen greater hypocrisy than I saw in Stone's Posner piece. If you want to read about an irrational, paranoid, egomaniac, go ahead and read this silly book.
"Lunch Is For Wimps!".......2001-03-04
Since "Salvador" in 1985, Oliver Stone has kept humorless historians, political journalists and right wing reactionaries flinching.
"Platoon" (1986) was the first motion picture that actually depicted the lives of the "grunts" fighting in Vietnam, completely oliberating the absolute stupidity of John Wayne's jingositic film of "The Green Berets" in 1968.
"Born On The Fourth of July" portrayed the pain and suffering of many Vietnam vets returning home to a society that seemed callous and indifferent.
In 1991, Stone became the first commercial filmmaker with any clout to take on the morass of details surrounding the Kennedy assassination.
Can a man who makes movies based on historical events actually be classified as an historian?
That seems to be the fundamental question surrounding "Oliver Stone's USA," a fabulous new book, edited by Brent Toplin.
The first section of the book is devoted to a series of essays, both pro and con Stone, from writers like David Halberstam and Steven Ambrose (who writes a particularly nasty piece on "Nixon").
The book's second section gives Stone a chance to respond to the critics and that he does eloquently (noting at one point that neither Stephen Ambrose nor John Wayne ever served a minute in combat).
The volume of attacks on Stone for "JFK" from political pundits like George Will, Alexander Cockburn, Tom Wicker et al may have been prompted by the knowledge that Stone reaches more people with one showing of his films that they do writing a lifetime of columns.
"Oliver Stone's USA" is a book that should be read by anyone who has an interest in both the power of motion pictures and the dark side of recent American history.

Group Activities
Barhopping Scavenger Hunt
Take the bride-to-be out to one or more bars dressed in an inexpensive white veil and T-shirt on which individually wrapped Lifesavers have been sewn. Give her a list of embarrassing things to do: invite men to bite the candy off her shirt; order a drink with a kinky name; obtain from different men a condom, pair of underpants, phone numbers, and so on. If there's music, she must dance with the homeliest guy at the bar. (Note: Bars often waive cover charges for parties arriving in a limousine.)
Carve Your Favorite Body Part
Place several different vegetables in a bowl (for example, potatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, squash, bell peppers, zucchini, gourds, pumpkins, carrots, and so on). Instruct the guests to select a vegetable and a paring knife. Then, tell them to sculpt a sexy body part in not more than fifteen or twenty minutes. When everyone's finished, assemble all the sculptures on a table and have guests vote to select the prizewinners.
Condom on a Cucumber
Blindfold the guests and give each of them a wrapped condom and a cucumber. Tell them to remove the condom from its wrapper and place it properly on the cucumber. The fastest time wins a prize.
Name that Sex Toy
Place an assortment of sex toys in a large plastic garbage bag. Tie the bag shut. Ask the guests (one at a time) to feel around the outside of the bag and write down what toys they think are inside. Time limit: two to five minutes per person. The most correct answers wins a prize.
Pin the Penis on the Man
Hang a poster of a nude male model on a bulletin board. Cut out a cardboard penis and attach a pin to one end. Then, blindfold the guests one at a time, position them ten feet from the poster, and have them try to pin the penis on the model. The closest placement wins a prize.

Customer Reviews:
good review material.......2007-05-25
If you have lost your job and haven't had to search for one in awhile it has some good Q&A's to study up on.
Really excellent book.......2006-01-19
I don't usually write reviews but this is the best and most unusual interview book I've read. No phony advice, just things you can really use. Great exercises for practicing. And it has a good sense of humor.
Cheap tricks.......2005-11-06
There is some useful information in this book, but it can perhaps fit on 10 pages. One thing that I found useful - you are offered to have a rehearsal interview with a friend, and then change roles (to maybe try to get a better idea about how interviewers feel). The other useful thing is a couple of relaxing exercises described in the book to help you feel more confident.
A rehearsal interview is a good idea, but you can find this in any book on this subject. Relaxing exercises... well, they do make you feel great, but it's not a trade secret. I am sure you will find a ton of them on the Internet - just type "relaxing exercise" in a search engine.
Some basics are very briefly covered in the book - how to look for interviews, how to do "homework" - identifying your character/assets/habits, etc. This part of the book is done poorly, and in quite boring and uncompelling manner. Other books do it much better. I am not sure why this chapter is in the book at all.
The rest of the book - about 90 percent is about how to make yourself be the best looking/sounding person. It is full of "recipes" to supposedly make everyone else think how awesome you are. Let's just go over some titles: "Relaxing Your Voice", "Building Confidence", "Remember Success", "The Art of Persuasion", "Dyeing for the role", "A star is born"... feel the power yet? Yes, it makes you confident which is good for interviews, but it also makes you blindly confident. What you loose here is you are not being reasonable nor adaptive. I think you will get a better overall "performance" out of your interview by just being yourself rather than trying to learn some acting tricks. They won't make you look better than you are.
I agree that a person who is just from school, and having the first interview in their life may find some chapters to be useful. But that's just to overcome the fear. It won't teach you how to use the best of you to get an offer.
OK but not extremely helpful to me.......2005-05-30
I bought this book prior to an important interview. The theme of the book is that of compairing acting to interviewing. The book also insists that you have a partner to help you along with some of the excercises offered. I was disapointed with most of this. I didnt have time to coordinate "acting lessons" with a partner and I didnt need to learn how to act. I just wanted to gain some insight into the interview process, what interviewers are looking for, what to say, what not to say, etc. This book really didnt help very much. I was also disapointed that much of the suggestions in the book seem to be more anecdotal and common sense. He offers advice such as bringing a comb to the interview so you can make sure your hair is ok just before the interview and give a firm handshake to the interviewer.
The only people that I think this book would seriously help are those people with such severe acute anxiety that the interview process almost paralyzes them. I think the learning to act element of the book may help those people overcome this weakness.
From looking at the reviews it seems this book has helped many people and if you plan on buying it I also recomend buying a book that offers better advice on how to navigate through tough intervew questions. I bought Barrons 100+ answers to the toughest interview questions and it helped me immensely.
sales headhunter.......2005-05-26
As a headhunter, interviewing is part of everyday. I coach candidates but I also recommend that they buy this book. Every interview book seems to focus on questions and how to answer them but this book goes beyond that and helps the candidate present themselves positively and with confidence in a high stress situation, an interview. It takes a lot of work to interview well but these skills easily transfer over to making presentations, selling your products or ideas or any time you are in a situation where you need to project your best image.
