      Book Description

Digital Currents explores the growing impact of digital technologies on aesthetic experience and examines the major changes taking place in the role of the artist as social communicator. Just as the rise of photographic techniques in the mid 1800s shattered traditional views about representation, so too have contemporary electronic tools catalyzed new perspectives on art, affecting the way artists see, think, and work, and the ways in which their productions are distributed and communicated.

Margot Lovejoy recounts the early histories of electronic media for art making - video, computer, the internet - in the new edition of this richly illustrated book. She provides a context for the works of major artists in each media, describes their projects, and discusses the issues and theoretical implications of each to create a foundation for understanding this developing field.

Digital Currents fills a major gap in our understanding of the relationship between art and technology, and theexciting new cultural conditions we are experiencing.

This book is an excellent source of information regarding stochastic halftoning. No book comes close to reviewing such a broad array of halftoning algorithms and statistical models. It is clearly within the top three of all technical books on halftoning.

                        Book Description

Dziga Vertov was one of the greatest innovators of Soviet cinema. The radical complexity of his work--in both sound and silent forms--has given it a central place within contemporary theoretical inquiry. Vertov's writings, collected here, range from calculated manifestos setting forth his heroic vision of film's potential to dark ruminations on the inactivity forced upon him by the bureaucratization of the Soviet state.

a really good collection of his writings. I couldn't help but enjoy the naive and ideological enthusiam for his vision of filmmaking, especially when considering the box office rubbish that gets churned out every week. this book is ideal for anyone interested in film from that era or who has strong ideas about how to make films

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but wording is not the best........2007-09-02

The book is very good, particularly for chess beginners and step beyond.
The wording of the book, that is a conversation among a pupil and his professor is a little dense.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding resource for beginners.......2007-02-10

When I picked up this book used on a whim, I didn't realize just how valuable it would turn out to be. As the other reviewers have noted, it is definitely for beginners. However, for this particular beginner, it has been illuminating in ways that other "introductory" chess books have not. The frequent use of diagrams makes it ideal for reading when you don't have a board handy - or if you have small children who would make a chess board a liability rather than an asset. In particular, I like the way Pandolfini truly explains things that are merely stated in other books. For example, I have seen the statement in other books that king's pawn openings tend to lead to open games, whereas queen pawn openings lead to closed games. This book, on the other hand, actually explains why this is the case. Admittedly, the dialogue is sometimes contrived, and the humor is rather corny. But then, Pandolfini does not pretend to be Dave Barry; he is here to teach chess - and he does that very well.

3 out of 5 stars Not really so ultimate, but a decent book to start someoff.......2006-09-23

If you want a book to teach you how the pieces move this is not the right one. If you just learned how they move this is not the right one. But, if you have learned how the pieces move and have been playing for awhile, then this book does have its purpose. It move along from expecting you to be a beginner without any or much knowing how to play chess to getting you into more advanced stuff just so fast. Call it a "steap learning curve" - bingo, whamo, bongo and you are expected to know how the pieces move and the very basics and then it has you doing more adanced stuff if you get the point. But, if you are well in tune with basics, then there is some stuff to learn from. I like the movement of "Learn Chess, a complege course" for adults only and "Chess foor Juniors" for anyone, but especially kids as both are better arranged and are much more fun to read, period. This is not a bad book, just could use some rethinking on slowing things down.

4 out of 5 stars Makes an Excellent 2nd Chess Book.......2006-09-09

This book made a great follow up to "Complete Idiots Guide to Chess". "Ultimate Guide" follows the dialog between chess teacher and student as they play through a single game. The dialog between the two gets to the root of not just how to move, by why to move a particular way. By looking at moves, variations, and the consequences of each move, this provides a very interesting perspective on how to think when playing a game. The reason I recommend this as a follow up book is due to the breif covereage of chess basics. It came across to me as the reader is expected to have some previous chess experience and at least know the basic rules of the game. The first chapter only covers this briefly. The book was incredibly entertaining for a book that is basically a 300 page dialog, although some of the jokes are a bit corny, the principles seem incredibly sound. In fact, the principles in this book have helped me in winning against a chess partner that has beaten me consistently over the past few months.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Beginner Book.......2006-08-09

This was a very good book for me (a beginner). The student-teacher dialogue made the information flow in a fun and easy to follow format, explaining a lot of the 'whys' for each move, but not in a mind-numbing way. I love this kind of learning format and hope more books are out there like it. I think it is very good for any beginner learning the game, from the bare basics to beyond that. Well done!

                              Book Description

In business, politics, marriage, indeed in any significant relationship, trust is the essential precondition upon which all real success depends. But what, precisely, is trust? How can it be achieved and sustained? And, most importantly, how can it be regained once it has been broken? In Building Trust, Robert C. Solomon and Fernando Flores offer compelling answers to these questions. They argue that trust is not something that simply exists from the beginning, something we can assume or take for granted; that it is not a static quality or "social glue." Instead, they assert that trust is an emotional skill, an active and dynamic part of our lives that we build and sustain with our promises and commitments, our emotions and integrity. In looking closely at the effects of mistrust, such as insidious office politics that can sabotage a company's efficiency, Solomon and Flores demonstrate how to move from naive trust that is easily shattered to an authentic trust that is sophisticated, reflective, and possible to renew. As the global economy makes us more and more reliant on "strangers," and as our political and personal interactions become more complex, Building Trust offers invaluable insight into a vital aspect of human relationships.

I am a big Heidegger fan, and it is refreshing to see an alternative to trusting that doesn't include game theory, cognitivism, intellectualism, and the like. It's great for entrepeneurs!

4 out of 5 stars sometimes distrust can be equally important .......2005-05-13

i have been buying books for a while and learned alot from them school doesn't teach enough for people to be professional in any way possible. its up to you fill in the blanks. when you start to read this book you might start to feel warm inside because you have the inside track to life. this is not true. he mentions how trust is the basis of society and that it would fall apart without it. from a scientific-historical point of view this is not the case. aristotle held that if man could not think up of how something works, then it doesn't exist. we waited until rene dekar to tell us that science is man trying to discover what nature already knows. thanks to him most of our medicines are chemical replications of herbs found in nature. the point is that a healthy willingness to trust or distrust based on real understanding, is the point of view you need to read this book. also another point to make is that everyone has something he or she wants. if you position yourself to fill that desire while following this book you probably have a wining formula in getting what you want. this book should not be accepted at face value, it should be put under scrutiny but there is alot of valuable info in here.

4 out of 5 stars Trust as a Social Practice.......2005-02-17

Good distinctions on trust, in particular the whole concept as trust as a "social practice," which includes the possibility for addressing mistakes and betrayals constructively vs. trust as a "solid thing," which can be fragile and thus shattered forever.

So many discussions on trust center on assessing trust "out there" (i.e., how do you know whether someone is trustworthy or not). The authors underscore the importance of being trusting and having self trust "inside" (an ontological state vs. an analytical exercise), focusing on the relationship as well as outcomes, and the transformative nature of extending trust into a relationship.

I enjoyed the discussion on entrepreneurship -- that the heroic individual entrepreneur can only be successful by working with and through entire "networks of trust." So many entrepreneurs fail because they fail to master the "practice" of building trust, relying instead on their own inventiveness.

I highly recommend the book and would have given five stars if the writing had been a bit tighter. For serious practitioners (organizational development, coaching, management consulting), this book is worth reading and studying!

4 out of 5 stars Establish or Re-establishing Trust in Work and Life.......2003-10-18

A decent book that needs to be read carefully. The author explores the ways that we view trust from all angles. Trust itself is sometimes a hard word to define. People have different definitions of trust and the authors bring clairity into this subject.

Basic trust - we are all born with this trait, as infants we are dependent on our parents for feeding and caring for us. We establish a foundation for trust at a very young age.

Simple trust - unconscious form of trust better known as our default trust. A lot of times we trust people we don't even know because we have to, like it or not. When you go to the super market and the person at the register tells you it cost xxx, you trust that they have calculated the amount correctly. When we ask directions to a location when in an unfamiliar town, we trust a person we don't even know to give us correct directions. People who have been betrayed at one time or another refer to this trust as the "naive trust".

Blind trust - is a trust in denial. When somebody has been presented with facts showing their trust has been taken advantage of but continue not to believe the facts that are contrary to a one's personal beliefs, the person turns to a state of denial not accepting the facts. Blind trust is not critical and unquestioning.

Conditional trust - rarely does any trust exsist without some type of condition attached to it. A business person trusts that his fellow colleagues will do their work but would you trust a work colleague to do perform a medical operation on one of your family members? We trust somebody to do something and once this person has completed the action we will proceed to do something in return for that person. We see this type of trust in politics quite often or between parents and children sometimes.

We do not think very deeply with simple trust, with blind trust we are fooling ourselves into deception. As the author states, "Authentic trust is both reflective and honest with itself and others." Corporations and democratic societies that have authentic trust are usually more productive and profitable than those without it. Employees who are very cynical and parinoid have experienced some type of mistrust which is a good sign of a disconnect between employees and management. The ways to start to re-establish trust is to bring it out in the open with dailogue and define what trust really is. There mere fact of talking about it helps a group of people establish some type of base to start from.

                              5 out of 5 stars Philosophical discourse, not a how-to manual.......2003-02-26

Expectations that arise from our cultural backgrounds may cause us to be disappointed that this book is not a 'How To' manual, nor does it provide a blueprint for building or skillfully posessing some 'thing' called trust. Instead, the authors offer a philosophical discourse aimed at: exploring the cultural backgrounds that produce our (mis)understanding of trust; observing trusting in ourselves and others; developing a more powerful understanding of the meaning of trust; and developing practices and other competencies that will increase our capacity to trust, allowing us to enter into more powerful and satisfying relationships.

Those who have read Dr. Flores et al's Disclosing New Worlds, in which three specific historical narratives offer examples of particular political skills in action, may be disappointed that there are no similar in-depth narratives here. I think the ubiquity trust acts -- we are in situations of trust/mistrust in almost every moment of our lives -- precludes those kinds of narratives.
