Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A longer trade compilation, the JLA has to deal with the very deadly Prometheus, and really only do so with the help of a couple of ringers.
They journey to Rann to assist Adam Strange, and meet an old enemy who has started a careful takeover plan. Throw in Dream, the Sandman, as well.
Some great opponents, two many JLAers.......2006-12-24
These stories were originally published as JLA #16-#23.
The stories begin with Superman, Aquaman and Batman reforming the JLA that was disbanded in the last book. It is never made clear why the JLA was disbanded by the three, and, when it is put back together at the end of the first story in this issue, it is the same characters as before, plus Zauriel, Huntress, Steel and Plastic Man (with Oracle behind the scenes). Maybe they disbanded cause the old rules said they could only have seven? And, not that I'm arguing, but who put Superman, Batman and Aquaman in charge? I guess no Wonder Woman at the top because she died and her place was taken by her mother? Superman says the league is the world's only hope, it may be that they needed to add more talents to defeat upcoming opponents.
The storylines with Prometheus and Julian September are excellent, the last two with Adam Strange and the Sandman less so. Prometheus makes his powers equal to all of the JLAers...but he forgets a couple of new members and interlopers. He escapes so expect to see him in later books. Julian September opens up the world to probabilities and events that are million to one shots begin happening regularly. Both of these are great challenges for the team.
Favorite panels: the pictures of the reformed JLA, pg 24, 52 and 90 are spectacular. And the panel on page 202 with J'onn looking down on the eastern Canada, Great Lakes, Greenland area with the monster in the water is great.
The JLA reformed and stronger than ever.......2003-11-03
Following the disbanding of the JLA in the Rock of Ages, the fathers of JLA decide to reform the team and increase the member number, the new members are Zauriel, Steel, Huntress, Plastic Man. This collection also introduces Prometheus and how he takes out the enitre JLA on their own Moonbase. I thought that this was the best story in the trade. The next story was about the case of Julian September and about how he alters probability and how the most normal occurrences are thereby changed, i.e. Bruce Wayne's parents were never killed etc. The final stories were of Adam Strange (the worst one in the trade). All in all pretty entertaining.
The best so far..........2003-02-21
I've been reading the graphic novels in order, and this is the best so far. Following the awful "JLA: Rock of Ages", "JLA: Srength in Numbers" is comprised of a number of shorter stories; each of which is filled with adventure and soul. Yes, these stories have a soul, or a spirit. One of which even brought tears to my eyes. I can't say any other comic in recent memory has had that effect on me. Zauriel is a great addition to the JLA team. Wonder Woman is under used. But as a whole, these stories worked to entertain and inspire. What else can you ask for?
The loves of my life........2001-10-30
Let me first preface this review with saying that I am probably the only one who hated Keith Giffen, et al's former version of the JLA. To me the JLA was never a joke and it was more than just a comic. They were, and continue to be, the World's Greatest Super Heroes. Strength in numbers impressed me enough to return to the world of comics after a 10 year absence and am I glad I came back! Three truly great writers--Waid, Morrison and the extremely underrated Christopher Priest (his work in conjunction with Sal Velluto on Black Panther is nothing short of sublime) have put the word SUPER back into superhero. Even the much maligned Aquaman seems to be embellished with a majesty that until now had not been before seen.
My one problem: the insertion of Barda and Orion into the team. Kirby was a god, but only he really knew how to handle them. Their membership makes the team too top heavy and make other more thoughtful characters like J'onn J'onzz, Zauriel and Aquaman seem as though they're out of place and awkward. But still an enjoyable read and a fine comicbook. Five stars for reinvigorating what thought to be a dying franchise--the super hero team book.

A clear and simple approach to understanding life.......2000-07-18
In my 30 years of study and research of the great works of Buddhism, I have not found a more direct, simple and reader friendly study of the great tenets of Tibetan Buddhism. Lama Mi-Pham a renowned teacher of his age, gave this special study to his regions King. This book lays out the details of how this leader, and each of us, can best deal with the day to day issues of life, love, government and family.
It speaks clearly to each of us. If this is the sort of book you enjoy sinking your teeth in, this book in particular will bring you much to ponder, and is one you will want to re-read any number of times.

Great Gift.......2003-12-16
Received this book as a birthday gift seeing I was born on Oct. 31st, and really enjoyed it! Great table book for friends to flip through while you're in the john.
this book rocks.......2002-10-06
If you are looking for a serious book to learn the craft of acting, there are plenty of those in the library.
If you are looking for the most unique look at b-movie making available as told by the people who know the most, buy this book!
It's quick, funny, and gives you an insight that you cannot find elsewhere.
Good Humor.......2002-08-27
I enjoyed the book. Reading it was like watching a b-horror movie with your smart alex friend who loves to give timely sarcastic comments. It was light hearted, fun humor and the comments from the movie insiders were revealing and funny.
Fun with Fright.......2000-07-01
To find the true measure of this tongue-in-cheek horror movie book, put it on your coffee table and use it to compare notes while watching a monster/horror flick. This thing is dead-on...and funny! The hilarious intro, written by drive-in movie expert Joe Bob Briggs, is worth the price of the book. You can easily use B-Movie Survival Guide to set up beer drinking games while yelling at the screen. (example -- drink a beer every time someone opens the cellar door.) Killer (no pun intended) illustrations, too.
Well Worth The Purchase.......2000-06-30
I totally enjoyed this book. I thought the cartoons were fun, the jokes are cute and the celebrity stories added a lot. People always pick it up off my coffee table and say how clever it is, so for that alone it was worth purchasing. Be cool buy this book!
Book Description
This fun cookbook contains over three hundred arresting recipes from the world's favorite television and movie cops and detectives, as well as from police chiefs and other top cops from all fifty states. From Columbo to Andy Sipowicz, your favorite cops are here to protect and serve dinner! Illustrated and indexed.
Customer Reviews:
A not uninteresting curiosity.......2004-03-20
Published in part as a fundraiser for the "National Peace Officers Memorial Service Fund," which certainly seems a worthy cause, this volume purports to share the cooking secrets of those who keep us safe. It's a fairly extensive collection of recipes with cute names, some from actual police personnel, but most from actors who have played police personnel on TV and in films, and some of which actually are quite good (I tried making them). They are interspersed with black-and-white photos, again not so much of real cops (though there are a few famous ones, such as Buford Pusser, whose story was fictionalized in the "Walking Tall" films of the 1970s) as of TV and film actors playing police. Just as there are some good recipes, there are some fun memory-jogging photos. How else would I have remembered that Al Lewis (Grandpa on "The Munsters") also had a continuing role in that TV classic, "Car 54, Where Are You?" It's worth remembering the humble TV beginnings of such megastars as Michael Douglas ("The Streets of San Francisco").
Thus, this volume is part rather utilitarian cookbook, part nostalgia trip for addicts of shoot-em-up TV shows and (mostly) B-movies. It was given to me as a gift. I don't think I would have bought it myself, but I have enjoyed it.

Book Description
This classic study of British filmmaking, first published in the United States in 1980, has been updated to bring a 1990s perspective to the work of the studio that gave the world such unforgettable comedies as Passport to Pimlico and The Lavender Hill Mob. The heyday of Ealing Studios lasted approximately from 1939 to 1951, generating a roster of films that projected-by design-a vivid and particular image of Britain and Britishness. Studio head Sir Michael Balcon gathered artists whose films, whether comedies or dramas, offer superior acting performances with a feeling of ensemble that reinforces the values of character, responsibility, and community. Readers will enjoy, in addition to a new chapter relating the Ealing phenomenon to Thatcher and post-Thatcher Britain, the refined and improved filmography and biography sections.
Customer Reviews:
Tight Little Studio.......2002-08-05
This is a fascinating book. If you only know Ealing Studios for comedies such as "Kind Hearts and Coronets" "The Lavender Hill Mob" and "The Ladykillers," this book opens up the whole Ealing output from about 1939 to 1957.
Not only does Barr discuss the classic Ealing comedies, but he puts them in their context in the studio's output, and he shows how the studio's output changed over time regarding the pressures and changes that British society went through in those pivotal decades.
This book is "the rise and fall of Ealing Studios" but in an artistic, not financial, sense. It gets one to think about what movies say about "national character" yet remains enjoyable and jargon-free.

Book Description
Goldfinger is James Bond at his best suave, sophisticated, and with the elegant menace that only Sean Connery could bring to the role. Adrian Turner looks at the kiss-kiss-bang-bang movie that has it all the Aston Martin, the beautiful women, the casinos, and the infamous Pussy Galore.
Customer Reviews:
It could have been a contender!.......2002-02-12
Having used the Bond films, especially Goldfinger, in the classroom and written articles about 007 I was sadly let down by this book. While it begins with a very clever parody of a James Bond type story and contains many interesting interviews, there are many glaring errors. Sean Connery does not dislike having done this work, at least not as much as is implied, and some of his closest friends are associated with the Bond films he starred in. The information on Ian Fleming relied too much on John Pearson while seeming to ignore other biographers. There were some errors that made you suspect that the author has never seen the movies he talked about. For example, in covering the two Flint movies Lee J. Cobb is identified as the arch villain rather than the equivalent of M to Derek Flint. (It is a shame that master novelist John Gardner, who penned many Bond books, was not consulted as I have had this wonderful opportunity and learned more from him in ten minutes than from this book.) I have also met and talked with a couple of the stars of this film in the past so I do know something about it. New facts were brought out through the interviews so I am glad that I read the book. I do wish that the author had a better understanding of American culture and fandom as that may have eliminated some of the elitism that this reader senses. The book was a great idea, it will be a part of my Bond library, but not one that I will refer to very often. I really wish that it could have been better as I consider Goldfinger one of the great films of the 20th century.
Indispensable Book on GOLDFINGER.......2001-05-18
This book has been exhaustively researched and it shows. This must have been a real labor of love for the author, Adrian Turner. This is the one film that really spawned the world of James Bond to the general public. It left an endearing quality on many of us and this book is a tribute to that whole unforgettable era.

This is one of the best supplements for the Fifth Age game to date. The roles in this book give a lot of creativity of what a player can do with his character and the optional rules for mysticism are cool. The adventure is also very sweet.

A high point for Dragonlance, 5 Age.......2005-06-12
Setting aside the controversy of the re-release of Dragonlance as a profoundly changed world described in a SAGA system rules set, and taking Wings of Fury on its own merits... I'm impressed.
It's chic to note TSR's decline in the late Nineties while describing a RPG item of the time. The idea is that TSR could do nothing right, had no talent left, only looking for the buck, etc. Admittedly, quality control took a slide, but it wasn't universal.
Wings of Fury does a wonderful job of expanding the centerpiece of Dragonlance: The Dragons. Doug Niles -- while not the first name you'd think of in RPG writing -- can be relied on to deliver competent work. Artwork throughout is above average. Numerous sidebars in the books add color or highlight rules.
Inside are two books and a map:
Book One is Dragonlore: A Treatise on Ansalon's Dragons.
Book Two is Wings Over Ansalon: Dragons of a New Age, Part Five.
Poster map is of the Dragon Isles, a semi-mythical archipelago dominated by dragons, but also the home of numerous other thriving cultures. A whole campaign could be set here by an inventive referee. The concept is very similar to the Council of Wyrms box set (1994; ISBN 1560768576).

Outdated.......2007-08-04
Although I knew the copyright on the book was 2003, I bought the book and went shopping in NC in June 2007. A lot of the retailers are gone. I was looking forward to shopping at Rose and Utility Craft and both were closed for business. Blacks has moved. Furnitureland South has 1 million sq. feet of furniture and a good place to look, but prices were better at Blacks. Also be careful because a lot of the furniture is not from NC, but from Asia. This book was probably helpful years ago, but now is very outdated.
Savings are Overrated.......2006-03-07
I agree with a couple of previous reviewers that this book is a bit dated now and to check specifics before making the trip. I used this book before my first trip to shop High Point, and have made two subsequent trips. I agree that the savings are not that great, and if you have to ship, plus now pay tax, you will probably not save over your local retailer. I priced a Henredon bed and dresser at Boyle's, and my local store quoted the exact same price. In the end, Boyle's offered a 10% discount, free shipping (as they should on the amount I was spending) and no tax, so I saved a bit over my local store who would not offer a 10% reduction, but it was probably a wash after the trip expenses. You may save more if you live in an extremely price-inflated area. On the flip-side, you can indeed look, touch, and feel an incredibly wide variety of furniture in one day. Sitting on that couch that you are spending a couple of grand on cannot replace ordering it from your local retailer's catalog sight unseen. Second, if you live in a more rural area like I do - we have only one good furniture store - you get a much better idea of what is available to you. This book gives you some good basic information on the stores and the lines they carry. I agree with other reviewers that the service is not that great at most stores. I have never been able to get anyone to give me "design help" and the sales staff at most places will clearly size you up based on appearance, so if you want serious help, dress like you have some money to spend. Otherwise they are just order-takers. Be sure to visit manufacturer websites before you go to narrow down what you are looking for.
Very Soft on Rating Customer Service.......2006-02-11
I used this book to shop for furniture in the High Point area. It was useful in locating stores and in knowing what product lines each store offered. There are two main problems I have; (1) I think the savings are overstated - it is probably more in the area of 20 percent off, and (2) I think the author was uninformed or else very soft on rating the customer service side of things. The salespeople treat you like family (as stated in this book) when they are trying to make the sale, but for me, that was where the good customer service ended. I bought almost all of my furniture at Rose Furniture. They were very helpful and responsive until after some items arrived damaged. That is where all the competence and responsiveness ended. If you read Ms. Shapiro's review of Rose Furniture, she only talks about how wonderful the sales people are - she offers no information about treatment after the sale. I think this is a huge oversight. What you want in a furniture retailer is good service - this is all they do. They don't build furniture, they service the customer. I waited 5 months for my order to be delivered - Rose estimates an 8 to 10 week delivery timeframe. Rose Furniture would consistently tell me something that just wasn't true. After waiting 5 months for my items, one of the items would not even function properly and was covered with some dark, gummy substance - all over the finish. I refused delivery and I'm seeking a refund. Rose Furniture has a condescending way of dealing with people that is very aggravating. They have a pleasant exterior appearance while all the time they could care less.
not very helpful.......2005-11-15
I just returned from a trip to NC for furniture having purchased this book as a guide. As it turned out, the book was not very helpful and I wasted a lot of time by relying on its recommendations. For starters, it's very outdated and the author's website for updates is no longer online. Many of the recommendations are based on the author's personal opinions without explanations that readers could use to judge for themselves. She lists her favorite stores and downplays others without providing a basis for her reasoning. Much of the information provided on the various dealers is straight out of the stores' marketing materials. There are a few useful tips scattered through the book but overall it wasn't very helpful.
As far as whether NC is worth the trip- it IS, but only if you are already looking to buy very high quality name brand furniture (pieces that typically are special ordered in your pick of fabrics and finishes). NC is not a great place to go if you're shopping primarily based on budget. You aren't going to find very low priced furniture, but if you were already prepared to pay $4000 for a leather Natuzzi couch from a local retailer, it's worth the trip to save 40% on it. If budget is your most important criteria, you're better off at IKEA or a local retailer that carries lesser known manufacturers catering to a lower price point. Just from personal experience, we did great at Furnitureland South- AMAZING selection and service in one stop. This author had little good to say about FLS but her hands-down favorite- Rose Furniture- was a total bomb- rotten service, cramped showroom and so-so selection.
The book is good, the savings are not.......2005-09-30
My wife and I decided to make a trip to NC for our 10th wedding anniversary. Figured since we were going to spend the money to go someplace anyway, we'd go figure out the NC furniture mysteries. This book was a great guide to helping us plan the trip. As for the contents, it is everything you need. But, make sure to update the store hours via the web or phone calls before you travel. Many of the stores had changed hours/days. In fact, one location that is prominantly mentioned as a cluster of many retailers, a good one stop shop, is almost out of business. Most retailers have left.
As for whether you save money shopping in NC, I really don't believe it. Before we left, we had found some furniture groups we liked here locally. We called several of the stores in this book for competitive quotes. The actual per piece price was about the same. Some were cheaper, some were more expensive, so the group price was about the same. Then you have to add on shipping. BTW, NC is collecting sales tax for most states now, so you won't save that, either. It would have cost more to buy in NC.
So we took the trip. Even writing off the entire cost of the trip, which is not insignificant, but since we were going to spend it to go someplace anyway, we didn't count it, we didn't see where you could save money if you have to have the furniture shipped. At best the savings were $50-$100 per peice. The liquidation outlets are something of a joke. We saw two women get into a fight over who could buy something that was damaged. We saw a bedroom suite "on clearance" that was within $100 as a group of what we saw it new for in a showroom earlier that morning. You might get lucky in a clearance center, but having seen what we did, I'd never go back. The Thomasville factory outlet was OK, but the selection was extraordinarily limited, and if you wanted a group, you were out of luck. But, it is the only way to get Thomasville cheaper than your local store.
Overall, the book is good, and it would be valuable to give you a few numbers to call to check your local retailer's prices. I am one of those people who research for a year before buying anything, and it is a good resource. However, unless you live in an increcibly inflated area such as New England/DC/NY area, you are going to end up spending the same or more by shopping NC. About the only advantage of going there in person is you can make one stop in Highpoint, by Furnitureland South, and in one day you can basically see every single piece of furniture currently made between the 6 stores clustered right there.
