Sweet pictures and tons of info.......2006-03-09
Charles Gatewood, also known as "the family photographer of America's sexual playground", has about 40 years of experience in his field. In other words, what he doesn't know about kinky photography is not worth knowing. It's probably safe to say that there isn't any part of the world of fetishism that he has NOT experienced, and with Photography for Perverts he shares these experiences with his readers. There is, according to him, nothing shameful about calling yourself a pervert, since to him the term simply represents individuals who are willing to live out their fantasies and desires in an environment where nobody blames them for doing so. Or in his own words:
"Whatever your persuasion, whatever your perversion - you are not alone. Together we are striving to create a safe, enlightened space for sex-positive explorations. This book will help you decide where you may fit in the scene, and also offers some wise, well-tested ways of getting there. Radical sex play is in the midst of a grass-roots evolution, and you are about to become an authentic erotic revolutionary."
Gatewood offers a tour of his own history and career, with plenty of pictures to accompany it, but also gives you all the tips and advice you could ever need if you yourself wants to starts photographing the world of kinky sex. The book doesn't contain any close-ups on penetrations or hardcore sex. Instead it focuses on different kinks, such as bloodplay, play piercing, extreme piercing, sploshing, and much more. This doesn't mean that some of the pictures aren't quite extreme - even though you'll always more extreme pictures somewhere else - but you won't find many taboos in Gatewood's world.
But then again, this book is called Photography for Perverts. So what do you expect? Pictures of fluffy clouds and cute kittens? No, I didn't think so.
Gatewood isn't just a talented photographer, he also knows how to write thorough and informative. The book has tons of pictures, too, even though it isn't simply a book about his pictures. If you're on the verge of stepping into that forbidden land of the perverted, then you definitely need a copy of this book.
Perhaps everybody does? I'm pretty sure there's a pervert in all of us. It's just that most people don't have the guts to admit it.
Fun Book!.......2005-08-10
Overall this is a fun read that touches on the high points of what it takes to be a pervy photographer. I'd recommend it. Would be nice if there was some deeper details on photo technique, but I guess that isn't really what the book is aiming at.
Keep up the pervy work Charles!!

More for photographers than for the average person.......2004-08-13
This is a very well-written guide into the world of erotic and explicit photography but it is very much geared toward the person looking to pursue a career not merely to make menentos of their life. The book is detailed and specific and the average person may not understand some of the jargon. For the average person, if you like women that is, there are ample photographs, maybe even 100, and midsection of color shoots. The historical notes of important photographers and their struggles in an inmature sexual society is also very interesting for the average reader.
A Fun Guide to "Doing Fetish Photography".......2003-12-18
This book is fun to look at just for the hot fetish pictures alone, but there's also a ton of information about doing fetish oriented photography, whether just for yourself or professionally. The author who has done this sort of thing for years and years offers his advice on items like negotiating shoots, digital imaging, "tools and techniques," devloping your own personal style of photography, keeping records, legal issues, fighting censorship, and where to meet models. As I read the book, I got a sense that Gatewood was offering his thoughts on doing this kind of photography as well as advice on how to do it well. A lot of his personal stories are fascinating as well. He also spends a chapter (Four Promiment Masters) discussing other well-known fetish photographers; Annie Sprinkle, Micheal Rosen, Barbara Nitke, and Eric Kroll.
I would have gotten this book just to have some of the wonderful pictures, but the information Gatewood offers in addition to the photos make this a wonderful book to have, for anyone interested in this specific realm of photography.

Book Description
The report has two purposes. The first is to describe in depth various techniques for treating uncertainty and risk in project evaluation. The second is to describe advantages and disadvantages of each technique to help the decision maker choose an appropriate one for a given problem.
Although the focus is on buildings and building components, the techniques described in this report are equally applicable to non-building investments. These same principles apply in the evaluation of any capital budget expenditure whose future stream of benefits, revenues, savings, or costs is uncertain.
Investments in long-lived projects such as buildings are characterized by uncertainties regarding project life, operation and maintenance costs, revenues, and other factors that affect project economics. Since future values of these variable factors are generally not known, it is difficult to make reliable economic evaluations.
The traditional approach to project investment analysis is to apply economic methods of project evaluation to "best estimates" of project input variables as if they were certain estimates and then to present results in single-value, deterministic terms. When projects are evaluated without regard to uncertainty of inputs to the analysis, decision makers have insufficient information to measure and evaluate the risk of investing in a project having a different outcome from what is expected.
Although the technical literature treats uncertainty and risk analysis extensively, a recent survey shows that applications are still far behind theoretical capabilities. Several reasons might be hypothesized for this lag in implementation. First, practicing analysts anticipate high costs and time-consuming analyses in evaluating risk. Yet computers reduce considerably the costs and time for risk analysis. Second, analysts are concerned about the lack of data. The more uncertain the input data, however, the more helpful it would be to account for the uncertainty and to evaluate the associated risk. Third, decision makers, particularly top managers in corporations or government agencies, are reluctant to accept these techniques because they are not confident that the techniques will help them make better decisions. This reluctance may stem in part from a lack of understanding of the techniques. A comprehensive examination of the different approaches to treating uncertainty and risk in project evaluation would show how the application of risk analysis techniques to uncertain data can improve management decision making.
This report is intended as the basis for a new ASTM standard on how to account for uncertainty and risk in economic evaluations of buildings and building components. The approach is tutorial and relatively comprehensive to build understanding of the appropriate concepts and techniques among engineers, architects, and economists of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Subcommittee who will develop the new standard. The report is also intended for professionals, educators, students, and managers who are interested in applying these techniques to the economic evaluation of buildings.

More French Speaking Women Film Directors........2005-05-13
Francophone Women Film Directors: A Guide by Janis L. Pallister, Ruth A. Hottell (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press) When French-Speaking Women Film Directors was published in 1997, two things became evident: (1) It was an essential tool for students, instructors, and scholars of francophone women filmmakers, serving a vital purpose for all levels¡ªfrom the novice looking for guidance to the seasoned scholar checking a fact, date, or other specific detail. (2) It would be necessary to continue immediately the important task of cataloging women's cinema; for although they still meet with obstacles even in Occidental cultures, their artistic productions have increased exponentially in recent years. Similarly, technological advances (particularly in the various video formats) now make even somewhat minor productions significantly more available to the general public at affordable prices. Hence, more films and great accessibility demanded furthering the research.
In this volume, Ruth A. Hottell has joined Janis L. Pallister in filling the gaps of the 1997 volume, and following the progress made by women since its publication. Like its predecessor, Francophone Women Film Directors is both a teaching tool and a directory for use by scholars and students of film and literature. Unique among guides dealing with film, both for its breadth and for the very fact that it is devoted exclusively to francophone womenthroughout the world, most of whom are omitted from other directories and studies, this guide contains listings of nearly three hundred francophone women filmmakers and their films. Whenever possible, dates, brief biographies, descriptions, and short critical analyses by Professors Pallister and Hottell, as well as by others, are included. These two authors have painstakingly researched film journals and the Internet, attended film festivals and conferences around the world, monitored TV listings in various countries, and traveled around the world to work in film libraries and view recent releases. Their efforts have produced the most comprehensive guide available today.
The reader will see that the filmmakers included in the book are from all parts of the world: France, Belgium, Switzerland, Latin America, Quebec, even Thailand. Users of this guide will be able to set up a truly global program on the subject. Moreover, this book, like its predecessor, offers a section called "core concepts," designed to enable instructors to organize a course or a program around a theme of interest to feminists, drawing from world cinema by both women and men directors. These core concepts and themes include such subjects as abortion, pornography, prostitution, and mother-daughter relationships. A list of film sources, an extensive bibliography, and an index of film directors and the titles of their films, as well as geographical subdivisions, maximize the directory's usefulness.
Within this framework, why concentrate especially on French-speaking women directors? Firstly, as a service to (French) teachers and professors who now incorporate film¡ªand women's art¡ªinto many of their courses. Next, because in spite of the problems etched above, one cannot deny that a number of the women filmmakers of France, Qu¨¦bec and Belgium have become virtually as well known as many male directors: Chantal Akerman is quite famous; her film Couch in New York has frequently aired on television; L¨¦a Pool, too, is known in many circles, and can be considered as almost on a level with Atom Egoyam. But especially famous are Claire Denis, Catherine Breillat, and Agn¨¨s Varda, the latter's recent film, Les Gl¦Áneurs et la glaneuse (The Gleaners and I), having received widespread recognition, and having been, for example, the fifth of the top ten sales made by Facets in the spring of 2002, while Breillat's Une vraie jeune fille (A Real Young Girl) came in sixth. This is from all sexes and countries. Virginie Despentes's sensational and controversial Baise-moi was ninth in the top ten rentals (from all countries) and figured as ninth of twenty-five top-selling foreign films.
This compact volume seeks, then, to answer questions not only about the works of renowned artists, including the remarkable success of such works as Breillat's and Despentes's, but about those of lesser-known artists as well. Striving to complete the picture through 2002, it is compiled from many sources, and presents information in English, but with reference to French copy, in order to increase the guide's versatility.
The authors have found the presentations and catalogs of the Cr¨¦teil Festival of Women's Films to be of particular value. On the web, there are sites devoted to women's films and women in films, many of which are cited in our bibliography. Catalogs and Web sites of the NFB (ONF) are also a rich source of information, and we are especially grateful to this entity for its kind permission to borrow generously from its copy.
They have excerpted material from all of these references and from others besides¡ªwhether in English or in French¡ª, for the convenience of those who wish to use this guide book. Wherever this has been done, the source of the information has been given. It should be noted that dates and run times vary considerably from one source to the other; in most cases we have made no effort to adjudicate these matters, but have given sliding dates and dur¨¦es. These variations in date occur for a number of reasons among which one might suggest that: 1) the film was planned for one year, but in fact, was held up for some reason or another; 2) sometimes a new copyright date has been put on the USA version, both on the film and on the video; 3) some-times, even, a new date was put on the video when it came out. For similar reasons the running time can vary from film to video, etc.
Many Shorts of a few minutes are to be found in Cr¨¦teil catalogs. The information regarding them has been only partially reproduced here. Similarly, virtually all documentaries have been excluded here; they and their directors will be treated in a separate guide to French-speaking women documentarian.
One more note is in order here. Those referring to this guide should be aware that its use is maximized when it is consulted in tandem with the 1997 guide French-Speaking Women Film Directors; for it has been the authors intention to include here, by and large, only such filmmakers, films and critiques as did not figure in that volume. One should consult as well the Internet Movie Database Site (http://us.imdb.com/); some but not all of the information on certain directors has come from this site, and from other internet sites as indicated in the body of the guide.
This book is not intended to be a critique of films by women directors, but rather a compendium of their films and selected criticism of them, including an effort wherever possible to give places in which the films are discussed in French, thus making for a bilingual reference work. And indeed the establishment of this text has been an arduous job: The internet was used extensively, along with many other guides, journals, catalogs, library resources¡ªconsulted in situ¡ªand so forth. In many cases, the information contained herein has not been easily established, even when found¡ªafter extensive searches ¡ªon the internet. Thus it is our hope that this guide, when used in conjunction with Pallister's French-Speaking Women Film Directors, will be an important and handy tool, a point of departure, a quick source of information; for that was our intention in preparing it. We have refrained for the most part from entering into controversies or displaying our own likes and dislikes. Similarly, for the sake of remaining objective, they have chosen not to include our own analyses.

Book Description
French-Speaking Women Documentarians is a guide for teachers of French and others interested in selecting and researching the work of female French-speaking documentarians. Represented in this book are filmmakers from Canada, various African nations, the Antilles, Lebanon, Switzerland, Belgium, and several other countries, with emphasis on Agnès Varda of France-arguably the greatest female documentarian of all. The book includes information on each filmmaker, classified by country of origin, and lists and describes her works, giving factual information such as date, duration, credits, and synopses, and pointing out critical treatments, both in English and in French, of her most important films. Shorts, docudramas, and works of animation are also discussed, as they, too, reflect history and culture. This guide will lead to the viewing of films that shed understanding on the culture being portrayed and to a greater appreciation of the contribution of French-speaking women filmmakers to this important, if not always objective, film genre.

Book Description
This book/CD pack is a great workbook to promote musical togetherness in the rhythm section; its exercises give the drummer and bassist a unique opportunity to understand the thinking of each other. It covers rock, funk, Latin and Latin rock styles, and teaches how to develop original odd time rhythms. The last chapter of the book features arrangements of 10 songs for practice.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for improving your drumming.......2004-05-06
If you are a beginner to average drummer, but serious about improving your drumming ability, then this book will be the best help you can find.
I have bought a few drum rhythm books, but this one is different. It is full of rhythms that are like rungs on a ladder - each one is just a little higher/more difficult than the last. By working through the book in a systematic manner, you will find that your drumming ability is taken to new heights that you did not think possible, and in the shortest possible time. And you don't need a lot of equipment - a snare, kick drum and hi-hat will do for most rhythms (though a ride would also be helpful).
To get the best out of the book, and maximise my own learning, I began using it 'systematically' about 5 months ago. I had bought it 4 months before that, when I was learning at about grade 3 standard, on the recommendation of my drum tutor (all credit to Julian, therefore), but had worked through the rhythms in an ad hoc or casual manner.
Most pages contain between 6 and 12 rhythms, each with increasing difficulty. I start to learn each rhythm at a slow pace (I have a Korg MA-30 metronome, bought for less than £20 from www.adcdrums.co.uk, plugged in to a combi amp using a small-to-large-jack lead). I practice each exercise using three positions: open-handed on hi-hat, cross-handed on hi-hat, and ride (not the book's recommended method of learning, but an approach picked up from my drum tutor). I mark, above the rhythm, the bpm that I have achieved, and then go on to the next one. Once I have finished the page, I then go back to the first rhythm on the page, crank up the metronome in 10bpm jumps (or less, depending on the difficulty of the rhythm) and work through the page again. I keep doing this until I can eventually play all the rhythms at the target pace (the target beats per minute isn't written on each page, unfortunately, but it is on the `rhythmic summary' pages that follow).
Although I practice on average for 30 minutes a day, I've only completed pages 5 to 18 so far, but my skill and limb-independence has improved very rapidly. I can do the rhythmic summary on page 19, but only at 10bpm less than the target pace. However, I've already learnt that when I'm stuck it is better to move on to the next page - when I come back to the rhythm a few weeks later, having done more advanced rhythms, the rhythm I was stuck on seems much easier to do. Using this approach, I've progressed to page 30 (but with some pages between 19 and 30 falling short of the target pace). However, I'm keen to move on to the Latin rhythms, such as Calypso, Cuban, Merengue, and Mambo, that appear later in the book.
Incidentally, if you buy the book/metronome combination that I have, the Korg MA-30 can't do 12/8 time, which is needed for some rhythms, and a 12/8 metronome is much more expensive. However, the MA-30 can still set the target pace in 4/4 mode - you calculate the bpm required by multiplying the target pace by 2/3rds (for the mathematicians, that is the same as dividing by 12/8 and then multiplying by 4/4).
To put that in plain English, if the target pace is 160bpm in 12/8 time, then set your metronome to 107 bpm in 4/4 time and play triplets. This is because 160 x 2/3 is 107 (approx). I'm glad to report this calculation had my tutor foxed for about 17 seconds!

For non-readers.......2006-06-23
Do you really think cliches are the "secrets of success?" This is a book to give to someone whom you know won't actually read it.
A Bit Short.......2005-12-15
This book reminds me of the best seller "Who Moved My Cheese". They are both written in oversized font and are about 100 pages long and both cover simple messages.
If the books were in a regular font they would be 30 pages??
Please do not get me wrong. But it is just a feeling one gets that they have been had, sold a bill of goods which is just a summary with comments for $10.
Somebody has written down a list of XX number of principle ideas or management techniques, and then expanded each idea to fill the 100 (30 real) pages.
It would be almost as effective to just make a list of them on one or two pages.
The upshot of all this is do not buy this book, but by Jack's book "Straight from the Gut", or buy Slater's book: "Jack Welch & The G.E. Way".
I prefer Jack's own book, and to me it beats many more sophisticated business books hands down. Business is not black and white.
Almost every day there is one crisis or problem or another, and Jack's story puts it all together plus conveys the energy and excitement that he brought to the job. Something is lost in the list approach.
29 secrets is better than nothing.......2005-04-26
Jack Welch is a fabulously successful manager, but most small entrepreneurs are not. They are just getting by on a day to day basis with little planning and are subject to bankrupcy with every crisis. They don't have an MBA, and they don't have time to study the principles that would give them more time. This book is a quick, easy read, it re-aligns their thinking, and gets them on track to success. You can't give your struggling business acquaintances a better gift.
I wonder . . ........2003-02-08
There are many books about Jack Welch and all of them show and teach the corporate strategies and tactics this legendary manager implemented while at GE. Most of those titles portrait Welch as the successful business person everybody would like to be. However, I would like to warn the reader that the professional success of famous CEOs cost them their families. It's hard to believe how Welch was able to manage thousands of relations with millions of people at GE, while on the other side he failed on a relation with only one person: his wife. By the way, how many wives has he had??? Is that success??? In which planet???
Now about the book . . . it's a good title but only read it if you have never before read a title about Jack Welch or GE; if you had, it's more about the same old stuff, and I would recommend your spending your money in a smarter way.
