Good patterns -- bad book design.......2006-01-28
This book has adorable, as-yet-untried-by-me, knitting patterns, but one of the worst designs I have seen. The front of the book has lovely photos of each pattern clumped together with text on them in big letters which gives the name of the design and "See Page such and such," which, in many cases fade into the photo. The bigger problem arises when you are looking at the pattern, which tells you the number of the page of the photo -- but the photo pages are not paginated at all which makes that useless and makes you have to count backwards from the first pattern page (page 36).
Cute Patterns- Bad Instructions.......2001-04-03
I made the pig booties which certainly turned out cute. However, the pattern lacked a tension gauge (which is as fundamental as needle size) and didn't have any diagrams to show the knitter how to piece the body of the bootie together. Her patterns are really adorable and I would buy the book again. But if it ever gets into reprint adjustments should be made.
Debbie Bliss is THE kid's knit designer.......2001-03-27
A friend of mine has a cute 2 year old and she knit the barnyard duck sweater for him. (This kid was leaning out of his stroller at 3 months of age, waiting to see the ducks on the river that runs through the center of town. He'd go wild when he saw them. Unbelievable. )
The slippers are so cute, you want to wear them too.
My only caution is that to get these darling designs, you need to knit intarsia. This is the method where you use a small bobbin or ball of color for the design patches and you do not strand as you do with fair-isle type knitting. That takes some practice. There are some good instruction books available to help you learn this useful and gorgeous technique.
Don't let fear of intarsia stop you. These sweaters are small projects because they are kiddie-sized and boy are they EVER cute. Enjoy.
This may be my Debbie Bliss Favorite!.......1999-10-14
I LOVE this book. As a mother of two small children, a boy and a girl, I am always looking for books that have many cute options for either gender. Not only does this book have that, but I find this collection to be extraordinary. There is a duck all-in-one that is SO cute, barnyard animals to knit and the most adorable cow, pig and hen slippers that you could ever find. I love Debbie Bliss' other books as well, but this one is probably my all time favorite. Many of the knits are done in primary or other vivid colors and involve intarsia knitting. But even if you don't love intarsia there will be cute options for you (fair isle, texture knitting). I am really glad that I decided to splurge on yet another Debbie Bliss book - it has been well worth it!

Excellent what-if........2007-09-23
An alternative history of long-standing superhero team the Justice League of America. Bits of rather stilted dialogue notwithstanding, you should enjoy the story and art in this volume.
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This is an Elseworlds story about the Justice League of America, it looks at what would have happened when a car tyre puncture stops the Kent family from finding the baby Superman.
Without Superman around the environment the heroes have to operate in is a lot tougher on them politically.
way to go.......2007-08-16
I just read The Nail and Iwas extremely happy that I bought it. THe silver age is my favorite era of comics and Alan not only wrote them believably well but drew them well too. the last time I saw work this good was mhis work on batman and the outsiders
A Disturbing Look At The Justice League.......2006-06-19
This DC Comics/Elseworlds graphic novel is a thorough tale of the JLI without Superman. Alan Davis did a excellent work making the established DC characters in their altered forms, like Green Arrow severely crippled, Hawkwoman(in a truly cool Hawk costume)now a widow, Robin and Batgirl murdered by the Joker in front of The Batman and Jimmy Olsen(Superman's Pal in the Current DCU)as the main villain. The Nail is beyond a shadow of a doubt the best JLI graphic novel I ever read in a while.
Nails It!!.......2005-12-28
Before DC Comics decided to bring Hal Jordan back as THE Green Lantern, this DC Comics/Elseworlds series JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA: THE NAIL was partly a trial piece to showcase Hal Jordan. Clearly he is a major force in this story and shows why he deserved his rightful place back in the DC Comics Universe. Writer/Artist Alan Davis borrows slightly from Alan Moore's WATCHMEN as someone is trying to discredit "Meta-Humans". Green Lantern and the rest of the Justice League of America (sans Superman--which explains the title "The Nail")are trying to find out who is behind it all. It is also causing bickering and dissention among the ranks of the group. The art of Alan Davis and Mark Farmer is top notch, clean, and straight forward, reminicient of the Neal Adams, Jose Luiz Garcia-Lopez, John Byrne and other great comicbook art styles of the late part of the Silver Age of Comics from the late 60's to the 80's. This reviewer's only complaint is that this story was basically a throwback to the archetype 1970's JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA comicbook and the creators didn't include major support character RED TORNADO in the fold. However, it's great to see the likes of Aquaman in his original Silver Age look (until recently HAS returned to the original look in the regular DC Universe) and Barry Allen as the FLASH. Otherwise, for those who grew up reading the Gerry Conway, Eliot S Maggin & Dick Dillin JLA's, this is a must have book!!

Enjoyable sequel........2007-09-23
This expands on the events of 'The Nail', and anyone who enjoyed that excellent volume will need this too.
Empty calories.......2007-05-07
In JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NAIL, writer/artist Alan Davis treated us to a DC Universe without a Superman. By the end of the story, that obviously wasn't quite the case, but for some odd reason, Davis wishes to continue the story in JUSTICE LEAGUE: ANOTHER NAIL. This time around, the New Gods are at war, demons are attacking the Earth, and characters from almost every period of DC history are in existence at once - in short, the DCU is going wacko. The Justice League, with the help of the Outsiders, the Metal Men, and the Doom Patrol, among others, must solve the mysteries and save the day.
Alan Davis' art for this story is absolutely beautiful, and I can't help but feel that he took on this project primarily to have the opportunity to draw as many different and obscure characters as possible, with the story being secondary. While it does get off to a good start, it quickly began to confuse me as it zigged and zagged all over the place. Soooo much happens, but I was hoping that Davis could somehow tie it all together. Well, he really let me down with a conclusion that was too simple for such a huge set-up. The heroes undergo some very interesting changes, and the tension is pretty good, but in the end, I was left wondering what the point of the story was. While there is a "nail" of sorts, it is nothing like the focus of the previous book. In short, what I am left with is a book full of pretty pictures and interesting situations, but ultimately, nothing very satisfying.
More than a sequel, a revelation.......2006-12-27
In the follow up to the brilliant "The Nail", Alan Davis further explores this world. He recounts a massive war between New Genesis and Apocalypse that took place during the same time as the Super Jimmy incident explored in The Nail. Now, a year after both those events, a new set of circumstances is enveloping this entire reality.
A great many more characters are given a chance to show their talents in Another Nail, more than The Nail by far. Some of the retellings are very faithful to current continuity, and some are radical departures. One example of the departures from cannon (what is DC cannon anymore, anyway?) is Mister Miracle and Big Barda. I cannot reveal what is different about them without giving away a big chunk of the plot, and I'm not about spoilers.
I think this story is greatly enriched by having first read "The Nail". If you have read this book, more of the plots and subplots of "Another Nail" are better enjoyed. However, if you haven't read "The Nail," don't despair. Many of the huge plot points are recounted and well enough that it is not absolutely necessary to read one before the other.
I highly recommend both books to any lover of comic books, but especially fans of the DC heroes. Any DC fan will find delightful details in this strong Elseworlds offering. As a personal note I will say both "the Nail" and "Another Nail" are my favorite Elseworlds stories besides the infamous "Kingdom Come".
As Better As The Nail.......2006-06-23
This sequel to the DC Comics/Elseworlds tale involves the new JLI(Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman, J'onn J'onzz, The Atom, Hawkwoman and new member Superman)and a collection of DC Superheroes Like The Outsiders, Metal Men, Phantom Stranger, etc., as they confront a danger that threatens not only their world and their present time, but the entire universe. It was great to see many other DC characters in their new incarnations, like Selina Kyle(Catwoman) as The Batwoman, Halo(from the Outsiders)as a Black person and Oliver Queen as the new Amazo. Alan Davis did a fine job of telling an alternate JLI story.
BEAUTIFUL Art and an Inventive Re-Imagining of Superman!.......2005-08-06
If you ever wanted to see Superman as a shy, Amish boy, then this is the comic for you! And, trust me, you should want to see Superman as a shy, Amish boy! Why? Because its a refreshing take on the character that takes him to his logical "boy scout" extreme and helps us to understand the "real" Superman better!
Alan Davis does a beautiful job here. He does most of his work for Marvel Comics, but it was DC who originally introduced him to American audiences on the eighties comic "Batman and the Outsiders", and he still occasionally comes back to play in the DC sandbox. And when he does, the results generally outshine his Marvel work because he writes most of his DC stuff himself. His writing has an unbeatable optimism that fits so perfectly in the DCU.
I think the "Nail" books are his career best work, except maybe for his short, beautiful run on "Fantastic Four".

Knows How to Recount a Tale!.......2007-07-14
This isn't my first Dave Gorman adventure I have previously read the sensational book Are You Dave Gorman? which he cowrote with fellow British author of many books in this genre Danny Wallace. If you haven't read any of these guys' work before its pretty hard to describe the type of book you're going to be reading. Lets just say you know those moments when someone recounts something which happened them to a crowd of friends or people at a party that has those listening imagining they were in that situation and everyone breaking into uncontrollable laughter. Well these boys have the talent to do this in the written form and they do it extremely well!
This book takes place a few years after his world wide adventure of trying to find and meet 54 people with the same name as him. Dave has just signed a contract to write a fiction novel on a man who discovers a new colour (something he made up on the spot in the publishers office) only he has no idea how to do this. While trying to push himself to write the novel he is constantly distracted by his email and the Internet. When he gets an email from an Australian asking him if he knows he's a Googlewhack Dave wonders what sort of insult or compliment this random stranger has given him. Dave e-mails the guy back asking him to explain. Dave finds out his website is the only one in the world with a page where two different words (in his case Francophile Namesakes) appear randomly somewhere on the page. Googlewhacking is a word game that nerds or bored office workers around the world play. Of course Dave has to have a go himself and after a while has a Googlewhack and e-mails the owner of that site to tell him all about it. When the owner of that site has a go he finds another Dave Gorman (a man Dave came across in Are You Dave Gorman?) so Dave rings the other Dave to tell him. It is not long before Dave has been bet he can't find a chain of ten Googlewhacks in a row before he turns 32. Reluctant at first Dave's new adventure is soon underway.
Granted the book is a little bit slow before it gets to this stage but once Dave gets on a plane to Washington the humour comes thick and fast. His recounts of Washington DC and the mugger who wants him to attack him as the mugger has learnt self defence, the ghoulish mother tourist at the war memorial, and the comments at the Lincoln Memorial, you'll never laugh so hard. His Googlewhack quest takes him all over the US, Britain and to other countries. The recount of the conversation with a Texan on route to Mexico is another classic I won't forget for a long time. Funny is an understatement for this book, just read it!
If you haven't already done so also grab a copy of Are You Dave Gorman? Also read Danny Wallace's books Join Me (the story of how he started a cult by accident) and Yes Man (Danny can only say Yes to any question) they're hilarious as well. Can't wait for the next adventures from either of these sensational authors.
Recommend it but did not love it.......2005-10-25
I loved the premise of this novel from its description. It seemed an interesting way to connect with people from different walks of life and to show how easy it can be to create a great adventure.
The book was interesting and due to the book I have even tried to "googlewhack". It was also interesting that so many people were open to meeting the author in his googlewhack search.
However, the book was not quite as humorous as I would have expected. There were some great lines, but not enought to hold my interest.
Worth a read nonetheless.
A depature from the pressures of life!.......2005-01-20
On a recent trip to Gran Canaria I planned to unwind, 7 days by the pool, beer in hand, three good books. I read all three but Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure proved to be streets ahead, what a great read! The appeal for me - his adventure being so far removed from normal daily life. This resulted in my imagination being able to wander at great speed. All the 'real-life distractions we fall victim too we're there also. Delightful, entertaining, gripping, a 'can't put it down' book. I am in no way a professional reviewer, just an ordinary bloke who enjoys a good read. Believe me therefore when I say 'this one is a good read'.
The ultimate procrastinator.......2004-12-25
What a fun and funny book. Dave Gorman sets out to write a novel, but one day receives an email out of the blue saying he is a "googlewhack" and so begins his ultimate procrastination in search of ten googlewhacks in a row, taking him across the Atlantic Ocean numerous times and to far off places like China and Australia as he travels some 80,000 miles in a race against time to meet a series of strangers around the world. And along the way he recounts in a very humourous fashion the strange people he meets and the freaky coincidences that occur.
This book had me laughing and reading passages out loud.
Inspired rollercoaster.......2004-11-11
Dave Gorman's Googlewhack adventure is an inspired rollercoaster. And like all roller coasters it is thrilling, unexpected and scares the be'jesus out of you.
Dave takes the ennui of getting into your thirties, with all its responsibility avoiding tricks, and draws it out into the extreme.
Whilst many of us may have painted the kitchen to avoid getting on with what we're meant to be doing, Dave is probably unique in jetting all over the world many times over to achieve the same effect.
Horrifyingly he seems intent on destroying his life throughout the tale - thank God he got a book out of it!
Book Description
"An extremely valuable contribution to the history of African American art." --Toni Morrison
"Oscar Michaeux and His Circle is a marvel of scholarly cooperative effort, an omnibus book of heroic scope befitting its authors ambition to recreate the complex African-American world of the 1920s that Micheaux and his movies meant to serve. . . . the book features an uncommonly rich trove of photographs, stills from his movies, advertisements, and other ephemera of his age . . . [the book is] remarkably free of the sort of opaque critical jargon that might have limited its access to the broad audience that should be drawn to it." --Thomas Cripps, author of Black Film as Genre and Making Movies Black
This is a landmark text, essential for teaching and reference. . . . A splendid collective achievement. --Hazel V. Carby, author of Cultures in Babylon: Black Britain and African America and Race Men
In this important, sumptuous new book, prominent scholars examine the surviving silent films of Oscar Micheaux--the most prolific African-American filmmaker to date and a filmmaking giant of the silent period. Both artist and showman, Micheaux stirred controversy in his time as he confronted issues such as lynching, miscegenation, peonage and white supremacy, passing, and corruption among black clergymen. His films were completely different from Hollywood pictures in the ways they spoke to black moviegoers.
These essays shed light not only on Micheaux's films but also on his immense influence on other filmmakers, actors, and writers. What these authors have to say will fascinate the general public as well as scholars in the fields of film studies, cultural studies, and African-American history. This thoroughly readable collection is a superb reference work lavishly illustrated with rare photographs.

Elvis loved Hawaii.......2005-02-20
This book is a wonderful description of the times and events that Elvis spent on Hawaii. From making three movies "Blue Hawaii", "Girls, Girls,Girls" and "Paradise Hawaiian Style" to his "Aloha from Hawaii" concert. Even the explanation of his involvement of the construction of the U.S.S Arizona Memorial in 1961.
Had it not been for Elvis, there wouldn't be a Memorial for the U.S.S Arizona today. At the time Elvis received great praise and a plaque was placed at the memorial for his efforts. Yet today the plaque is gone, Elvis's contribution to the U.S.S Arizona nearly erased from memory.
The "Aloha from Hawaii" concert was a benefit for a cancer center. We need to remind people that Elvis was not just an entertainer, but he gave so much to needy causes.
The book is filled with pictures, memorabilia and a wealth of inside information on his life.
Elvis in Hawaii is a wonderful glimpse into the amazing time that Elvis spent in paradise.
With over 100 black-and-white and color photographs.......2003-06-19
Elvis In Hawai'i is a unique look at the life of the legendary rock singer Elvis Presley, focusing especially on his love of the Hawai'ian islands and the people who lived there. Elvis' fondness of his favorite vacation spot is brought to life with over 100 black-and-white and color photographs, some never before published, and an upbeat yet adroitly narrated text by Jerry Hopkins. Elvis In Hawai'i is especially recommended reading for the legions of fans and admirers of "The King" of rock 'n roll.
A lavish keepsake..........2003-04-15
Elvis had an affinity for Hawaii: he made three films there, did six concerts (including the historic 'Aloha' satallelite broadcast, and had many longtime friends. This loving assemblage of pictures and anecdotes, by one of Presley's first biographers, is full of the kind of critical judgment and eye for local detail that is often lost in fan-oriented books of this sort. There's pictures of him being casual with local people, accepting local awards, hanging out at the local radio station, and having a good time all around. Profusely illustrated with photos from private collections as well as official documents, this is a lovely keepsake.
Dreams come true in Blue Hawaii.......2002-12-13
All Elvis fans will recognize this title as a line from the song Blue Hawaii sung by Elvis in the movie with the same title.
However it's not only that it's also what Jerry Hopkins new book is all about; Telling the story of Elvis, following his dreams and having fun in paradise surroundings. Elvis visited the Hawaiian Islands many times, sometimes for business when filming on location or for one of the six live performances on the islands but also for a (well-deserved) vacation.
Jerry takes the reader on a stroll through the 50's, 60's and 70's as we follow Elvis from his first visit to the Islands in 1957 till his last visit 20 years later. Besides the obvious close-up look at the 3 "Hawaiian movies" ( Blue Hawaii / Girls Girls Girls / Paradise Hawaiian Style) the reader also gets to "hear" such funny stories as how the first concert in Hawaii (1957) was finalized (Colonel Tom Parker is supposed to have made a deal with an Australian promoter by winning a "game of dice" !!) and the story about a hilarious concert promotion by an Elvis impersonator
(No, this time there was no involvement by The Colonel). Not only do we get to know more about Elvis' activities in Hawaii, we also get to learn a bit more about Hawaii' natives with an Elvis connection, such as Karate teacher Ed Parker and James Shigeta (co-star in Paradise Hawaiian Style).
However, to me the highlight of this book must be the sections where we get to hear the stories of people who where actually there at the time.
People like country comedian Minnie Pearl, Velma Fisher (passenger on the SS Matsonia that sailed Elvis to Hawaii on his first trip in 1957), Tom Moffatt (Hawaiian D.J.) and Marty Pasetta (producer of the Aloha from Hawaii special). All have an interesting story to tell about their time with Elvis.
To me this book is a welcome addition to Jerry' previous two Elvis-biographies (Elvis: A Biography & Elvis: The Final Years). The book also features about 100 photos of which some are rare or never seen before. Quality of the photos varies from fair to very clear but the majority of them are interesting to see.
This leaves us with one big question: "Why did Elvis love Hawaii so much ?" I think the answer to this question can be found all-over in this book but is best described by Tom Moffatt when he says: "In Hawaii he could relax and wander more freely ...... people here respect his privacy"
Guess that alone was enough for Elvis to make Hawaii his paradise...............
Lots of great photos.......2002-10-28
This book is written by the guy who wrote the only serious Elvis biography while Elvis was alive, but this is not at all like that book. Instead, it's packed with great photos of Elvis in Hawaii, many from the local paper. There's also set lists from the benefit concerts he did -- written by hand by Elvis! Very fun!

interesting topic, dull rendering.......2007-09-07
The question "What is it like to be a white America in a place where you are the racial minority?" is a very important one. I think a sociologist or ethnic studies scholar would have done an excellent job on the inquiry. However, this was written by an anthropologist who is just a fish out of water. She condemns that idea that anthropologists only care about "stones and bones." Fair enough. However, this book had far too much "Margaret Mead's husband would have said this" and "I wonder if Franz Boas would approve," etc.
It's great that she can categorize the responses of Caucasians in Hawaii. However, her writing was dull, tedious, and uninsightful. I read the interesting quotes from informants and left her yawning scribble behind.
She mentions Telegraph Avenue without realizing the most people would not know that is the street that runs perpendicular to the UC Berkeley. She wrote, "Only Hawaii residents have the concept of haole." However, they use that term for the same population in Guam.
This book could be potentially dated. Other states have become or will become majority-minority soon. There has been even more interracial marriages and multiracial births in that state. As the US military focuses upon the Middle East and de-emphasizes the Pacific Rim, this may change dynamics in that state too.

The fate of many a contract hangs on the opening lead, making it the most important play in the whole hand. The Golden Rules of Opening Leads is an excellent guide to this frequently neglected aspect of the game. Here you can find all of the rules, with examples relevant to bridge today. If you study this book carefully, you will find that the way to pick killing leads derives from what you hear in the auction and in relating that to what you see in your hand.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Resource for Mastering the Concept of Value-Added Selling.......2007-02-23
This book is the definitive and primary source for value-added selling. Tom Reilly is by far the most knowledgeable and articulate spokesperson on this topic. This book sets the ground rules and provides a specific, how-to-do-it way to become a master at value-added selling.
There have been scores of books published that attempt to accomplish what this book accomplishes in the sense that the others are strictly "Johnny-come-latelies." Anyone who does like or appreciate this book certainly does not understand sales and the contemporary role that value-added selling plays in today's sales world.
One of the book's best ideas is how to present your price and stack your benefits relative to how your prospect wants to perceive value. That concept alone is worth the price of the book.
Just Closed Largest Order and Made $$$$.......2007-02-23
I have been a professional salesperson for over two decades, and have sold all over the world. Finding a sales book that actually makes me money is difficult. Most sales books are very general and motivational based. Tom Reilly is right on target. This is not the first book I have read from this author. Crush Price Objections and Coaching For Sales Success were two books that I found to be excellent. His book Value Added Selling is even better. If you want to become a multi-million dollar producer, the ideas in this book will make it happen. I don't give my commission away anymore. I am an avid reader of sales books and consider this one of the best sales books written. I just closed one of the largest orders (profitable) in my sales career using tips from this book.
Great content shaby book.......2007-02-15
Like the content. But needs a value added hardcover printer. You open the book and right away the spine breaks wherever you open it at. Very sad. If you cant make a quality hardcover then stick with the soft cover.
Strange that he talks so much about value but then uses a shabby printer to print his book. I would have paid a couple extra dollars for better quality.
I do admit that the contents are great. Would buy again
Not a great read.......2007-02-10
Perhaps it's because this is old information to me but I found this book to be tedious and rather uninteresting. I must admit I stopped reading it and put it up for sale. But this is just my personal opinion. Others may find it very useful. I certainly do believe in value added selling.
Value-Added Selling at it's best !!!!.......2006-08-23
This has to be one of the greatest books on selling I have ever read.
The common sense approach and detailed ideas are easy to understand and follow.
If your not Value-Added Selling in todays market then this book is a must read.
