book of excellent drawings.......2002-11-23
this book has excellent realistic drawings of the dress of the ages. I'm familiar with the 1066-1930 version. Some say that any modern drawings of the past are not to be trusted, in favor of artwork from the era being studied ,but I think nancy bradfield's work in the field is very admirable, and i trust her renditions. She has spent much time researching her field, and is an accomplished artist. There is an organized layout of eras and descriptions for each including textiles ,colour, hair, etc. No pattern cuts, but definately adesireable book to a historical dress enthusiast.

This is a great book!.......2000-10-20
I read this book in library, and it's amazing. I've looked at other books on medieval costume, but none have been as helpful or as easy to use as this one. The time periods are listed in order under the names of the rulers of England, with detailed sections for both men and women. Half of the pages of the book have beautiful black and white sketches of the costumes of the time period, and then on the page facing the sketches there are descriptions of the garments of the time period, down to the colours and fabrics.
A great quick reference.......2000-07-20
This is a wonderful quick reference of historical costumes in England. Half the book is black and white sketches of costumes through the years. The other half is a short history of the costumes worn during various time periods. The time periods are sectioned according to rulers (kings/queens) of the time. Every aspect of clothing is discussed from undergarments to headpieces. Because of the easy format, I use this book to look things up for quick answers. I am not an expert, but the accuracy of the content of this book is relatively decent as a quick reference. I would not recommend this book to those looking for detailed costume information. I would recommend it as a quick reference or for sketches.

Diapers and noisy kids... ah reality comics!.......2007-05-01
I'm a father of 4 kids.
When we started following Baby Blues, we can relate to it. It grew with us from 1 girl, to 1 girl & 1 boy. This complilation sees the family grow from 2 kids to 3; 2 girls and a boy... when this happened, it mirrored our family...
In short this is reality comic at its best... I haven't seen anything fiction in this series.
Our eldest just reached her teens... we had also been following Scott's other series (Zits), a good companion to a growing family's collection.
:)
Buy it, you'll love it........2006-03-08
Very good comics. I can't put the book down until the very last page.
Baby Blues is one of the best comic strips ever!.......2004-09-07
This was a great book. I love Baby Blues and this collection was no exception! I have read through it many times for a good laugh. My 10 year odl and 8 year old fight over who gets to read it next! An absolute must have for any Baby Blues fan.

Book Description
'Hey, Reiner, you ought to write those things down,' his friends have said. At eighty, Carl Reiner is one of the best raconteurs on the planet. Rather than a full-blown autobio-graphy, he has chosen his favorite form-brief stories that capture the tone of his life. 'Sidney Bechet and His Jazz Band Meet Franz Kafka,' 'The Birth of the 2000 Year Old Man and His Attending Midwives,' 'Mary Tyler Moore Made Me Quake,' 'My First Best Job'-the titles of Reiner's pieces reveal the wit of his stories. His charming memoir will delight anyone who wants a behind-the-scenes look at five decades of Hollywood and television history.
Customer Reviews:
An Amusing but not Hilarious Memoir.......2006-10-19
Mr. Reiner is undoubtedly a funny man but the full force of his humor is not to be seen in My Anecdotal Life. It is a likable, amusing and easy reading book but the stories are sometimes obscure and the punchlines sometimes don't justify the build-up. The professional period that he is perhaps best known for, the Dick Van Dyke show era, is lightly covered -- much to my disappointment. Another flaw is that there is no index. Books like this name-drop and half the fun is to see who and who isn't mentioned. Sadly, there are no old photos either. As Mr. Reiner intimates, much of the book flows from many years of dinner party repartee. You will like this book but only the most devoted fans will love it.
wonderful, amusing read.......2005-08-02
This is a great book! It is easy reading and wonderfully entertaining. I rarely laugh out loud even with the funniest of books, but I did with this one. Carl Reiner has let quite an interesting life, if you are a fan of him (or even if you aren't) you will love this book. Pick it up if you are just looking for some entertaining stories written by a comic genius. I highly recommend it!
I love Carl Reiner.......2004-08-17
I had an advanced copy and went through it in two days. This book is very much worth it. My wife and I have been huge fans for years.
Mel Brooks was right.......2004-01-10
OK, so I didn't buy this book, I read it standing up at a bookstore (Barnes & Noble on State Street in Chicago), and one, just one, of the anecdotes was so funny that I was laughing so hard that my sides were actually hurting and I thought they were going to throw me out of the store. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, but let's just call it the "Richard III" anecdote. And if you don't think it's the funniest thing you're ever read, -- well, then you have no sense of humor.
As disappointing as it is brief.......2004-01-08
Seeing that most of the reviews here are disappointing ones, I'm forced to agree. I expected more references to the heyday of classic television. While Carl must have a thousand stories about that era, he has evidently saved them for a different book. As for THESE anecdotes, I don't think I cracked a smile once. But I sure cracked a yawn.

Comprehensive, Insightful, and Essential.......2007-04-13
A must have for every filmmaker, motion picture historian, movie reviewer, and film fan. Absolutely everything you wanted to know about what goes into making movies work the way they do.

Excellent intro to study of film.......2000-04-26
I've used this book in teaching film courses (I'm a former student of Professor Gollin myself) and find this a very readable introduction to the study of film. Prof. Gollin takes the reader through the production process as well as explaining various academic and critical approaches to film studies. I would recommend this to any serious film viewer who is looking for a place to begin a deeper understanding of this popular art form.
To long in Pionts.......1999-01-19
Your book is to long per thought. Hard to read, and some of the words you used are not even in the dictionary.

One of the best newer books on algorithmic composition.......2007-07-07
This book is a practical introduction to computer composition. Its intended audience is student composers interested in learning how computation can provide them with a new paradigm for musical composition. The book therefore uses an accessible example-based approach to explain essential concepts and techniques, showing how these techniques can be integrated into the composer's own creative work. One of the most exciting aspects of computer-based composition is that it does not require years of formal music theory training to understand. Thus if you have a high-school math background and are interested in experimenting with music composition using MIDI and audio synthesis programs, this book is for you. This book will also be of use to computer science and engineering students who are interested in the artistic applications of object-oriented programming techniques and music software design. The book is full of examples and exercises for the reader to perform, study, modify, and adapt to their own musical purposes. All of the examples are available on the accompanying CD. In addition to the many short examples, the book contains a nmber of "Etudes" chapters that appear at regular intervals throughout the book. These are large structured projects that explore some particular technique or topic in detail.
This book is divided into two parts. The first nine chapters comprise an introduction to music programming in the Lisp language. Chapter 1 is introductory, but chapters 2 through 9 give a good selective introduction to computer programming techniques in Lisp. By selective I mean that these chapters are specifically relevant to the material presented in the second part of the book and to musical programming in general. The second half of the book, chapters 10 through 24, provide an introduction to the essential concepts and techniques of computer composition. The first few chapters of this part of the book discuss the representation of sound, musical structure, algorithms, and processes. The material in the remaining chapters can be grouped into four areas of discussion: algorithmic design, mapping and transformations, aleatoric composition, and pattern-based composition. An appendix to the book contains pointers to Lisp documentation that can be found online. Highly recommended to the reader interested in algorithmic composition from a non-application specific point of view.
Algorithmic Composition.......2007-01-10
A very well written text on using algorithmic techniques in Lisp for compositional elements. Excellent for class and individual study.
A must-have book for computer-assisted music composers.......2005-12-29
I reviewed this book for the Computer Music Journal, giving it an overwhelmingly positive review. Since then I've re-read the book in its entirety, and my opinion has changed somewhat: If Amazon had six stars to give then I'd give it all six. :)
This is a first-class book for anyone interested in using the computer for music composition. Be forewarned though, it is not a guide to GarageBand or any other MIDI sequencer or hard-disk recorder. The author uses his own Common Music progamming language as the basis for an exploration into techniques and methods of making music that would be most unlikely without the assistance of the computer. Btw, the Common Music software is included with the book, in packages for Windows, Linux, and the Mac, so you can work with the book's examples immediately.
The text is clear and easy to understand, reflecting the author's experience as an educator. The examples are helpful and open-ended, lending themselves to further explorations. In addition to the regular examples the book includes a number of more extended projects based on work by composers such as Steve Reich and Gyorgy Ligeti.
No previous experience with a music progamming language is necessary, but if you have a background in Lisp or another object-oriented language you'll feel right at home with this book's Lisp-based example code. If you know nothing about programming the book's first chapters will bring you quickly up to speed on the basics needed to work with the rest of it.
The cost is a bit high, but the paperback edition is sturdy and well-printed, so I'll echo my CMJ review and state again that this book is worth every penny of its purchase price.

A pleasant surprise - concentrates on basic principles.......2006-02-22
How often do you find phrases like "made simple" in the title of a book, only to find yourself out of your depth after a few pages? Well, you can rest assured. this book really does stick to the simple things. It tackles the end game in terms of concepts and plans, concentrating on basic principles, which can be applied in a practical way to our own endgame.
After an opening chapter on pawnless endings, we have a chapter on King and Pawn endings, a long section on Rook and Pawn endings, the most common type of ending encountered in practical play, followed by chapters on Knight endings, Bishop endings, Bishop and Knight endings, and Queen endings.
The second part of the book consists of 100 exercises, all taken from practical play, to test to what extent the reader can apply the knowledge gained in the first part. What is surprising is the number of times really simple endings occur in practical play. The 100 positions include a great many taken from GM games. I was pleasantly surprised at how often, after only a few seconds thought, I was able to find the winning/drawing line simply by applying my newly acquired knowledge. But even more astounding was the number of times a GM or very strong player had failed to find the right method. Food for thought here!
There have been many books on the ending written over the years, including a good number in the present millennium, but in terms of value for money I reckon that this one takes some beating. It is yet another example of my oft repeated dictum that GMs are not the best people to write for less able players.
This review first appeared in the magazine En Passant.
For those of us that need help in the endgame.......2004-07-03
How good is it when the author takes time to write conceptually what's going on, place a diagram with arrows, circles and whatever aids are needed to clarify his point and then explain clearly what is it that he wants to do with the position? And how great is it when after five moves the author shows you what happened afterwards with another diagram and repeats the process of analyzing the position and showing you how to play it? I used to think that Concise Chess Endgames was the best way to start to study the endgame but I was wrong... This is the book! This is the book to start studying endgames! I consider that the author must be a superb teacher because he uses all resources available to him to teach. Why can't books on such an arid topic as the endgame be as illustrative as this one?

The call for increased creativity in the workplace brings with it a concomitant challenge: how will the world of cool professionalism stand up to the inevitable heat and volatility that accompanies people's emotional and spiritual lives? It is problematic to assume, poet David Whyte explains, that you can ask people to create and also to behave. The Heart Aroused explores these and related issues in an inspiring, grounded, thought-provoking way, and is the best nonverse book by a poet since Robert Bly's Iron John. Interwoven with carefully selected poems to illustrate Whyte's points, The Heart Aroused is necessary reading for any professional who secretly harbors a poet's soul.
Book Description
In the middle of the road of my life I awoke in a dark wood where the true way was wholly lost
-DANTE
Like Dante, many of today's corporate workers find themselves lost in the day-to-day duties of their jobs. Our lives seem shaken by the events of September 11 and the seemingly endless examples of corporate scandal, it's become more difficult than ever to find meaning in the workplace.
Has your work lost its meaning? Are you afraid of pursuing your dreams for fear of failing or--worse--getting fired? Do you yearn to find creativity, and even joy, in your job?
In The Heart Aroused, David Whyte brings his unique perspective as poet and consultant to the workplace, showing readers how fulfilling work can be when they face their fears and follow their dreams. Going beneath the surface concerns about products and profits, organization and order, Whyte addresses the needs of the heart and soul, and the fears and desires that many workers keep hidden.
Through the poetry of both classic and modern masters, Whyte helps readers find both professional and personal fulfillment. In Beowulf, Whyte uncovers the key to confronting office conflicts. Like the poem's courageous hero, readers will travel to the belly of the beast of a problem and emerge triumphantly with a solution. The poems of Pablo Neruda help on find inner silence even in the busiest, most confining office space. With T.S. Eliot as a guide, Whyte teaches readers to appreciate the need to open themselves up to possible failure--and as a result, probable success.
At a time when corporations are calling on employees for more creativity, dedication, and adaptability, and workers are trying desperately to balance home and work, this revised edition of The Heart Aroused is the essential guide to reinvigorating the soul.
Customer Reviews:
detoxing corporations.......2007-08-23
How much of our corporate productivity is impeded by pettiness and posturing in the workplace? Seems a corporate healer like David Whyte is needed to stand for finding and reminding folks of a different bottom line.
Heart Aroused.......2007-01-04
Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! If you have a soul, buy this book. If you are not sure....buy this book. This book is an excellent exploration into the meaning of life + my job the incubus = a poetic awakening. David Whyte is a wonderful philosopher.
Connections Found!.......2006-12-15
Whyte has a unique capacity to make powerful connections between the inner core that fills us with emotion and caring and the places we do our work, sometimes even at the place where our job is located, though not often. His observation that we leave as much as 55% of our true self "in the car" each day when we go in our office to work is so powerfully true. I dare say there are few among us who cannot relate to that feeling. And yet, it is the 55% of ourselves that the company we work for really wants and needs but rarely gets. Unfortunately because of the patriarchal environments that many organizations (not always corporations or even private sector businesses) create we all too often find no real fulfillment in the workplace. That is sad because I never have read any mission statements that pronounce "We ABSOLUTELY are not going to have fun or like one another around here." That makes me think that the realized, oppressives outcome are not intentional. However, we often find ourselves working in and hating very dysfunctional cultures, even if not by design. Whyte introduces the concept of hope in a effort to replace the all-too-present doubt and hegemony of the workplace. We may not be able to express ourselves freely at work but Whyte allows us some freedom to dream of that possibility during our reading of this book.
The Heart Aroused.......2006-04-07
David Whyte writes in a truly inspiring way. When I worked at the Monterey Bay Aquarium many of us read this book as we struggled to grow better as an organization. This book was the catalyst to many personal "AH HA!" moments. Not just for me, but for many of my colleagues as well. From there I found myself in love with poetry again too. David's poetry is powerful and meaningful. The heart aroused is your own, and worth coming back to.
In My Mind: A Classic.......2002-09-10
This book is already on the way to becoming a well known classic now but I first encountered it in a very private and personal way at a crucial time in my life when it first appeared a few years ago. I felt very thankful then that someone had been able to speak to the hidden qualities of my work life and set me on more of a courageous path as a result. Having just reread it I realize now why it had such a profound effect on me: The Heart Aroused really does speak to a person whatever threshold of life they might find themselves on. A hearty recommendation then to anyone wondering about the hopes raised by the title, it more than fullfils its promise.
