Book Description
Books in this very practical series point the way toward good careers for young men and women who don't plan to get a college degree. However, all occupations described do require specialized training, either on the job or in technical or vocational classroom settings. Cosmetology is a growing field with a positive job outlook and many available career paths. This book describes how and where to find training for positions that include professional stylist, nail technician, skin esthetician, massage therapist, make-up artist, cosmetics manufacturer's representative, salon manager and other rewarding careers.
Customer Reviews:
Thank you to the author.......2002-01-22
Nobody thought I should go into cosmetology. They said I would never finish the classes. They thought I should work at the grocery store where I was a cashier and just keep on there until I got to be a manager or something. But that isn't what I wanted to do. A friend gave me this book and after I read it I knew for sure that was what I should do. So I am still working at the store but only at night. In the day time I go to beauty college. Pretty soon I can get out of this grocery store and do what I want!
An essential resource!.......2001-06-29
I read this book because I was considering a career in the cosmetology field and wanted to know the basics. This book has it all, from descriptions of the day-to-day job, to education and certification information, interviews with people who actually do the job, tips for how to write a resume and interview, etc.
I think this book would be great not only for career-switchers like me, but also for parents of children who are thinking about getting into cosmetology, and guidance counselors. It does reinforce that above all, cosmetology is a BUSINESS. Even though everyone who was interviewed in the book loves their job, they said that if you want to be successful it's not all about being glamorous and gossiping all day playing with products.
There is plenty of information all in one place about how to get started, including Web sites and telephone numbers. After reading it, I was excited and went to visit a local beauty college, something I never would have done before.

Book Description
Evangelion, Vol. 1, contains a Japanese sound FX glossary plus special bonus commentary by series mecha designer Ikuto Yamashita, as well as the famous "confession letter" written by director Hideaki Anno in the months before the original TV series premiere that laid out his deeply personal motivations to make Evangelion.
Customer Reviews:
I loved Eva, the anime... the manga not so much.......2007-06-19
This review is meant to summarize how I feel about the magna series in general after reading Vol. 1 and 3.
Now I loved Neon Genesis Evangelion, the anime, so I thought Neon Genesis Evangelion, the manga, would be worthwhile. I kind of regret my choice. Most of my problems come from the changes made. For instance Suzuhara seems to have gained a sort of Bronx accent that annoys me to no end... also (and more importantly to me) Shinji's personality is changed a bit. He goes from being quiet and unsure to more assertive and open. Though some people may like the change, I don't. I can't really explain why it bothers me so much, but I can only guess because to me the anime was just about perfect (I'm probably the only person who wasn't pissed about the ending to the series to put it in perspective). That accounts for 2 of the stars I took off.
The other star I took off was because at times the art work seemed kind of sloppy. A few times I had no idea what I was looking at. It doesn't take that much away, but I felt it was worth mentioning.
If that stuff wouldn't bother you, you'll probably enjoy the manga.
Great read........2007-05-14
I was a fan of the television series before I purchased this, but didn't realize exactly how interesting everything was. There is a lot more information given in this that isn't given in the shows, which is great for someone like me because I love to read up on back story and stuff like that, and all the extra stuff gave me a lot to start with.
Anime vs Manga.......2006-05-01
When I found out that Evangelion had a manga series, I was really excited. Because this was the series that really hooked me into the anime world.
The year is 2015, the Antarctica ice caps have melted and flooded most of he earth. Mysterious monsters, code named ANGELS, attack the small city of Tokyo-3. The world's only hopes against the ANGEL'S attacks are robotic life forms codenamed EVANGELION or `EVA' for short. The pilots... fourteen year old kids! (It's anime! They always rely on kids!)
After reading the book, I was very satisfied with it. However, watching the series and then reading the book, I found it very distraught for me. The story writer and illustrator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, who worked on character design in the anime series, portrayed some of the characters in a different way than in the series. But the story itself was very original in some ways and also, in some parts, stays true to the anime series. But I suggest the series over the book. So if you had to decide between the book or the DVD, go with the DVD first, than the book.
The first volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion gets 4 stars out of 5.
My name is Amone. Adios!
WHAT DO YOU MEAN, I'M A PILOT?.......2006-03-12
14 year old Shinji Ikari is being driven to a meeting with a father he hasn't seen in years. The problem is that on the way he has to make his way through an "Angel" a gigantic robotic monster who is destroying the city, trying to get to the base of "NERV", a shadow organization created by the United Nations, which is run by Shinji's father. NERV has constructed biomechanical semi-sentient mecha called "EVAs", and Shinji has been brought unwittingly to pilot one of them. He already has some anger issues because his father abandoned him and his mother but you can imagine his reaction when he is told he is one the "Third Children", adolescents who have a natural affinity to synch up with the EVA controls. Due to the wounds of another female pilot, the only one left to fight the Angel is Shinji. Talk about trial by fire!
The art by Yoshiyuki Sadamato is simply gorgeous and feels more like anime than manga. The things I have to complain about that were also in the anime is mainly the character of Shinji. He is such a loser! Everytime he has to do something difficult, he starts breaking down crying and yelling just like a....well, a fourteen year-old. If a kid of this age was thrust into the situation, this would most likely be how he would act. But there is something unseemly in the fact that the creator Hideaki Anno used the anime and manga to voice his own lack of courage in facing his problems. At times the plot oozes with Prozac and immature maleness.
Reasonably impressed.......2004-08-09
As a fan of the series, I thought I'd go ahead and check out the book. Artistically it is well done, though I'd say some of the scenes are very confusing visually. There is just so much detail there's just too much noise in some of the scenes. That, and it seemed to read "too quick". I don't know, it just seemed like I breezed through it very quickly. Once again, well done with just a few small complaints. Thumbs up!

What's the big deal?.......2004-07-31
There is very little changed from the TV series in this manga. As far as right to left, who cares. The artwork is hard to figure out in many of the mecha scenes. Stick with the DVDs.
A gift from God to mankind.......2003-12-19
This is the greatest literary work existing. When I read it the first time I was overjoyed by the mere existence of something as wonderful as this book. The plot is wonderful, so are the characters (you'll love Asuka, Shinji, and all the others!). There is only one good reason for not buying this book, and that is not having read the earlier volumes. Buy them, and the buy this. I can promise you you'll be glad you did. Noone could dislike this book.
quiet relationships.......2002-05-15
Vol. 3 is one of my fav simply because of how the story is and what ahppenes. Here ur left to wonder of many but still feel satisfied. The conversations are informative and as always the art is perfect. there is also some comody and some quite controvesial scenes u might wanna check out. :D
Good book.......2002-05-01
Evangelion Vol. 1, by Yoshiyuki is the first book in the series. This book is based on a popular Japanese cartoon, Evangelion. This book covers the first episode and parts of the second.
This book takes place in Japan in the year 2015, 15 years after the first ?Angel? self-destructs taking Antarctica and half the human race with it. The enemies are known as ?Angels?. In this, another Angel attacks, and the only people who can stop them are a couple of 14 year-olds in their gigantic robots called Evangelions.
I enjoyed reading it because it is in manga (comic book) form. I first read it when my friend loaned it to me, but shortly after, I bought the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone because I thought it was great. The author did an awesome job writing this book. I can?t wait till the rest of the series comes out.

Four more Keillor classics.......2001-01-27
"More News From Lake Wobegon's" "Hope", contains four more stories that further cement Keillor's place as the greatest storyteller in modern American History. The first story is "Alaska", an absurdly brilliant account of an independent Minnesotan who goes to Alaska to get away from her mother. Second is "The perils of Spring", where Keillor honors the constantly struggling farmer with humor, as always. "A trip to Grand Rapids" is the story of a couple who tries to get away for the weekend, with little initial success, and "Author" is a look into the pre-adolescent mind of the future author, Garrison Keillor himself. Altogether, these stories are magnificent and would be enjoyed certainly by anyone who reads this review.
Product Description
Using interviews with Jerry Lewis and many of his co-stars, this book analyzes his collaborative efforts with Dean Martin, his subsequent solo work, his writing and directorial careers, and more recent movies such as Hardly Working (1979) and The King of Comedy (1982). Comprehensive filmographic data are provided for each of the films, with cast and production credits, studio, release date, and running time. Lewis's own reflections on his work are included for many of the entries.
Customer Reviews:
A Must!.......2004-03-11
This book is a must for fans of Jerry Lewis, for students of film, for historians, and pop culture buffs!!
This is an especially wonderful publication for fans who don't want to dig up gossip, but simply want to appreciate the work of the entertainer they admire. This book is packed with information and wonderful black and white photos (many not avaliable anywhere else).
I appreciate that the authors dedicated the book to Mr. Lewis and it reads like a well-referenced and studied labor of love.
A Great Artist Finally Gets the Proper Respect.......2000-05-31
With all the other things on his plate--his charitable endeavors, stage performances--Jerry Lewis' impressive film career is often overlooked. The authors, with Mr. Lewis' cooperation, have done a commendable job putting this baby together. Jerry's comments at the end of each movie synopis/review are invaluable to admirers of this comic genius. Even Jerry Lewis' cinematic "failures" are infinitely more interesting than most actor/director's "successes." I value this book.

Customer Reviews:
Terrible book, unsafe designs.......2000-08-12
I do not recommened this book for several reasons the first and foremost being that the designs in my opinion are not safe for children.
While the book recommends the use of non-toxic paint so that the toys are safe for a small child to use, the designs call for nail heads and thin dowels to protrude from the toys and the joinery called for in the designs is so poor that small pieces could easily break off and choke a child.
The designs are crude and uninspired. A child with a crayon could do as well. The beginner woodworker will find only a half page of written instructions in the entire book. Among other things, these instructions make the absurb suggestion of using a hole saw with a hand (non-electric) drill.
The intermediate or advanced wookworker will be appalled at the shoddy quality of the finished toys in the photographs. Wheels are not round, joints to not fit properly, cuts have ragged edges that have not been sanded, a child with no experience could make a better toy from wood. This book should not have been published. I gave it one star because I could not give it zero.
Not recomended, save your money.

Customer Reviews:
Good methodology yet somewhat outdated.......2007-08-19
The book offers a sound methodology for indexing and filing paper documents. But I suppose it was written prior to the invention of the PC, so it lacks any reference to technology tools.
The only filing system that works for me.......2007-01-10
This is my second copy of this book because I keep lending it out and asking my staff to read and follow it. This system allows family members and co-workers to find filed items easily because of a simple and sensible indexing.
It Really Works!.......2006-09-22
I had at least 20 boxes of papers and clutter filling my office closet and making the floor into a minefield. Now I'm down to 5 boxes and have no fears that I won't be able to finish them. After fighting with filing for 30+ years, I found the answer in Pat Dorff's book.
Some people may find the book daunting to read - but if you try the system, step by step, you'll come to see how simplifying it really is. I had to do some adaptation because of the huge amount of unfiled papers I had, but that wasn't difficult, either. What I like best about this system are the way you can see it working and, because of this, the confidence it gives you to keep going. I used to be afraid to open the boxes. Now I approach them with energy!
May work if you don't have electronic files to organize as well........2006-07-02
First let me start by reviewing the pros of this book -- Although the indexing system in this book is not ideal for my circumstances, I found that there were other topics in the book that were helpful. Some of the helpful aspects of the book were the sections on the personality profiles and how they relate to paper management (or lack there of), as well as the questions to ask yourself when deciding whether or not to keep a document. If you need motivation to get started, this book could provide that as well. I find that whenever I am working on a project it is better to read everything I can get my hands on and then just determine what methods will work best for me.
Now for the cons -- At first I thought this system would be helpful for me to organize my document files, however after further review I don't feel that it is the best solution to align with today's technology. Over the past few weeks I have been reviewing several books and guides on the subject of filing and I have come to the realization that I don't want to use one system for my paper files and a completely different system for my computer files. I want the way I organize documents whether they are hard copy or electronic to be exactly the same. This should streamline the process not only when I am creating a place to store a document, but also when I want to retrieve it.
The author states that the advantages of using a a numbered index system are:
1st - To avoid having to redo all of your folders when you want to add a new one (necessary to keep all tabs in the proper sequence). Other organizers have suggested to use files that have the tab all to the left or all to the right to avoid this problem, however I tried that method for the last few years and I find that I still have to search for a file because the only tab I can see when I open the file drawer is the first one.
2nd - To eliminate the need to throw away folders from no longer kept subjects because they have already been written on. I avoid this problem by using removable labels.
3rd - The indexing system is easier for making revisions. Since I am using removable labels this isn't an issue.
4th - To avoid problems due to illegible writing. You can use a label maker if this is a problem for you.
None of these issues exist when filing documents on a computer, therefore it creates double work for electronic files. In fact in my opinion, using this system on the computer doesn't make any sense at all. Ultimately I have chosen to go with the recommendations from two other books "Conquering the Paper Pile-up" and "Taming the Paper Tiger". While neither of these books provided the exact solution to my paper management challenge, they provided a good foundation to start from and then I made adjustments for my particular needs.
Outdated and heavy on religious overtones.......2006-06-14
I found this book at a thrift store for 25 cents. I flipped though it and it looked dated, but interesting, so I decided to get it.
As other reviewers mention, it is dated -- but you gotta know that up front when you get it. It's published in 1986, when there were no (well, almost no) home computers. So you have to accept up front that it's talking about organizing papers using more papers -- but that's something we still all got to do occasionally.
So it's a system of notepads, file folders, etc. It does help you try to understand why you want to keep papers, etc, and what you can do about it. However, it does get overly complex, and really doesn't seem applicable in today's world, where there are far fewer "homemakers" who spend time organizing sewing and recipe files, as this book seems to be focused on.
Finally, I have to mention that it was the continual religion-related references that put me off to the book in the end. Others who are comfortable with this may not even notice it, but for me, I felt I was being preached to a bit too much to find it tolerable. Just my personal taste; I'm sure some others will disagree with this judgement, but I have to admit after enough casual religion references tossed randomly throughout the text, I gave up on the book and put it in the recycle bin.
