Great book.......2005-10-08
Everyone should be able to read this book lovers of DND, LOVERS OF PORN, LOVERS OF LIFE, LOVERS OF anyone who can say they just injoy Scifi.. Its a great book and i feel phil did a great job.. I hope Phil Foglio lives on for my childern to read its a great book.. but maybe not for the younger.. maybe younger adulty though ^^;; Later and hope you love reading and funnie and sex.. everything a guy will love and a nerd at the same time..
Funnies for grownups.......2004-09-04
Anyone who can't laugh about sex probably isn't doing it right. By that reasoning, Foglio depicts it done very well. (If it's not a laughing matter for you, just skip the book and the rest of this review.)
Volume 5 continues Foglio's visual exploration of the funny side of sex, collected from comic books printed some years ago. It's a series of short stories, all with fantasy or science fiction themes, allowing a lot of room to explore outrageous ideas. That means, for example, that the reader should have a liberal attitude towards dating outside of one's species.
Like the other XXXenophile books, this expresses a generally happy and consensual approach to adult play. The overall goofiness assures that the plots won't be taken too seriously. For example, most people wouldn't think that a dark spirit, sent to enforce an evil curse, would be open to seduction. Well, I guess dark spirits have to have a love life, too.
None of the short stories are especially memorable, but that makes them easy to enjoy more than once. That's what makes this a book worth owning, the fact that it can be funny more than once.

Funny, but the earlier editions were better.......2003-10-28
First off, this is a rather quaint book that seems more to apply to typewriters than computers. This isn't necessarily a bad thing -- it doesn't kill the humor potential at all -- but it does kind of weaken the force of the joke. In particular, creating space oddities (read the book) simply isn't doable without built-in kerning capability on the word processor, a concept only someone educated in page layout even understands.
That said, this is one of the funniest looks at one of the difficulties involved in the modern world of human resources: how do you write a recommendation that will fail to sell the candidate, without the candidate figuring out that you think they suck? "Typos" like "There wasn't much, which he couldn't do" (note comma), weasel words like "He had a flair for writing" (it was a red one), and hints on telephone recommendations (the voice gap, used to split a complementary word into an uncomplementary phrase) make this, if not exactly an invaluable resource, an excellent manual of things you wish you could do to someone you wouldn't recommend as raw material for the Soylent Green plant. This edition also adds weasel advice for the prospective new hire, with hints on how to make your resume look less incriminating.
The problem is that it's not the book it could be. The current edition is still stuck in the typewriter age with nary a multipart form in sight, thus limiting any utility it might have. It's also censored in some places, particularly the hints on what to write for someone with, er, morality issues. It's still an incredibly funny book, highly recommended to anyone who's ever had to weasel their way out of an awkward on-the-job situation, HR-related or not.
Amusing little book...some clever, some silly though........1999-03-27
Fun little book...I obtained a copy for $1, so I did get my money's worth

A Warm Survey of an Amazing Story.......2006-10-26
As a Casablanca lover (words don't do it justice), I ate this book up. Harmetz writes with warmth about nearly everyone involved in the film except Jack Warner, about whom she writes with a deserved respect. The stories of the bit players, most refugees, expanded the Casablanca context tremendously for me. The suspense, and the tale of how this gem could have been different in so many ways (or not produced at all), made me appreciate this cultural icon even more. I haven't seen the film since reading this book, but you bet when I do I'm going to turn off the phone.
Great book on the best film of the 1940s.......2003-09-25
Aljean Harmetz's "Round Up the Usual Suspects" is one of the best books on the making of what is probably the best film of the 1940s (and possibly of all time). Harmetz explains almost every aspect of the story--often sounding more like fiction than fact--of the making of this all-time winner. These aspects include who was behind the camera, the actors, and the writers. She provides many details about life behind the WB shield--which collaborates the view of Jack Warner as a jerk seen in a fine book,"Hollywood Be Thy Name"--the fights on who wrote the screenplay, and how they all meshed together to create an enduring classic. She also explains how the film escaped the propanganda machine of later 1940 films. If you love this film, you should read this book! Let us hope that it returns to print witht he release of the special DVD edition of "Casablanca".
A Great Read on the Making and Success of Casablanca.......2003-01-07
This book is a great read. Although heavily documented, the "characters" come alive throughout--the characters being actual actors, the Warner brothers of Warner Bros., the director, writers, even the lighting director and sound men on the set.
It wonderfully describes the studio system, the differences between the studios and how "properties" were loaned out, and how WW II affected everybody in the movie business.
Two quotes had me laughing until I was in tears. It is a great book. Additionally, the hardcover with translucent dustjacket is most gorgeous. This is a winner and a keeper for movie history buffs.
The best MAKING OF A MOVIE book I have ever read!.......1998-08-28
"Round Up the Usual Suspects" provided many behind-the-scenes tidbits about CASABLANCA that I've never heard before - Murray Burnett's lawsuits against Howard Koch, the feud between Jack Warner and Hal Wallis and a precise picture of the Warner Brother house style. Ms. Harmetz provided an excellent and detailed account of Hollywood moviemaking in the early 40s. After reading this and her books on GONE WITH THE WIND and THE WIZARD OF OZ, she just may well be one of the foremost historians of Hollywood's Golden Age.
A Miracle of Accidents.......1998-07-29
"Casablanca" is quite simply my favorite film. Its history encompasses the studio system at its finest, the political movements of World War II (the famous Casablanca conference provided invaluable free publicity for the film), and some of the best casting in film history (my favorite character was always Claude Rains' Louis Renault).
In "Round Up the Usual Suspects," Aljean Harmetz has brought the history of this film to glorious life, exploring its origins and dispelling its myths. (How seriously was Ronald Reagan considered for the lead? Did Ingrid Bergman know the ending?)
Her attention to detail would have been sufficient to make this a great book, but Harmetz does much more. Her greatest achievement (and it's great indeed) is to present the film as a miracle of accidents, the almost coincidental meeting of the forces of Hollywood with the forces of history.
"Round Up the Usual Suspects" is essential reading for anyone interes! ted in the story of how a great film is made.

Book Description
This collection of essays examines the works of composer Arnold Schoenberg, one of the most influential and controversial composers of the twentieth century, in the context of the "New Music" that was the historical and cultural movement of his time. In these essays, Schoenberg's work is subjected to historical, technical and theoretical analysis. Studies of other "New Music" composers such as Webern, Schreker and Scriabin are also provided. The collection includes essays of broader cultural-historical and sociological import that should interest those involved with twentieth-century music and theory.

Need little an Enchantment in your life?.......2000-03-28
Okay, as a veteran of White Wolf Games (tabletop and LARP), I challenge anyone to play a more noble and delightful game than Changeling. It was pure magic on tabletop, even better in Live Action. How could you NOT want to those "merry wanderers of the night" known as the Fae? IF you've ever used your imagination, then I know you remember the magic and glory of all those fairy tales you dreamed of and acted out. So go on, break out the old carboard helmet and sword, and let the chimerical magic work it's charm. There's always time to play. This book will show you how to do that, and let your friends come along as well. Play this, and you'll even make more. Who knows? You might even meet a Lord Oberon or Lady Titania. And don't forget Puck. ;)
I love this book!.......1998-11-04
This book was awesome! I highly recommend it to anyone who is into role playing games. It is a must have! And if you've never experienced a role playing game, get this book! It's a great way to start!
Live-action's new stage!.......1998-09-20
This is a truly sad game, but filled with woders and glamour, too. People argue that changelings don't fit into the World of Darkness, but they're really the most tragic characters. Locked away from their glorious Arcadian home, they wage a constant battle against a banal reality not their own and the madness of the Dreaming. The Court intrigue and dynamic characters make this game a joyful experience, whether woven into a Vampire and Werewolf campaign, or standing as a Freehold chronicle. And that Faerie Magic!
nothing compares to the fun of a changeling larp.......1998-09-17
the point of a larp is to have fun, is it not? after all it is just a game. changelings have the most fun because their goal in life is just to have fun! i didnt even read this book until after i played, and even though it ran smoothly, i am glad that i did, because i learned aspects of the game that i didnt even know that i didnt know! clean wholesome fun for the whole family (or something like that!) two thumbs up
Book Description
Warren Buffett, Carl Icahn, and George Soros all started with nothing---and made billion-dollar fortunes solely by investing. But their investment strategies are so widely divergent, what could they possibly have in common? As Mark Tier demonstrates in this insightful book, the secrets that made Buffet, Icahn, and Soros the world's three richest investors are the same mental habits and strategies they all practice religiously. However, these are mental habits and strategies that fly in the face of Wall Street's conventional mindset. For example:Buffett, Icahn, and Soros do not diversify. When they buy, they buy as much as they can. They're not focused on the profits they expect to make. Going in, they're not investing for the money at all. They don't believe that big profits involve big risks. In fact, they're far more focused on not losing money than making it.Wall Street research reports? They never read them. They're not interested in what other people think. Indeed, Buffett says he only reads analyst reports when he needs a laugh. In Becoming Rich you can discover how the mental habits that guided your last investment decision stack up against those of Buffett, Icahn, and Soros. Then learn exactly how you can apply the wealth-building secrets of the world's richest investors to transform your own investment results.
Customer Reviews:
excellent .......2006-08-24
Well written, I believe if the advice is implemented completely the reader will becoming wealthy as the title implies.
One of the Best Books on Investing and Trading.......2006-07-15
I don't agree with absolutely everything that Mark Tier writes in this book - but the points I disagree on at least get me to think. I think there are more differences between Soros and Buffett than Tier would like. Some of the rules are relatively but not absolutely true - for example the don't diversify rule is relative. Buffett is in fact very diversified today across investments and operating businesses as a result of the pure size of Berkshire though insurance remains the primary business. Soros always diversified across individual stock investments but would take large futures positions. But the insights in the book far outweigh any of my criticisms. For the guy who says the book is worthless - the book is not very useful to someone with no experience in trading and investing. You need to come to this book with a lot of experience and maybe limited success and it will open your eyes. Having previously read biographies of Soros and Buffett and their own writings will help put things in context too. This is very much an advanced level text :)
Worthwhile reading.......2006-03-08
I found this book very interesting and would say it lived up to its billing. I specifically bought it to read about Carl Icahn but found the other investors interesting as well. It's always a good idea to learn from the best and these guys are some of the best, give it a try.
Becoming Rich: The Wealth-Building Secrets of The World's Master Investors Buffett, Icahn, Soros.......2006-02-23
I write financial newsletters for a living. I'm constantly being asked by my publisher's book subisidary to submit ideas for an investment title. I've bought every investment book with the name Buffett in the title. I've read most of them, although I've finished few of them. The best ones are The Warren Buffett Way, by Hagstrom, The Buffettology books, and Greenwald, et al's Value Investing: From Graham to Buffett and Beyond. Becoming Rich, is half a notch below these, but this is the book I wish I'd written, not any of those other three.
The best thing about Becoming Rich is that Tier, a veteran newsletter writer, always SHOWS you. He never merely tells you what his point is. This book has page after page of anecdotes and examples, including material I don't remember reading elsewhere about Buffett. For example, there's a great couple of paragraphs explaining what happened to Coke before Goizueta took over, and how Goizueta dug into the business, sold of all the garbage assets previous management had bought, and introduced Diet Coke, which became an instant smash hit.
Tier does a better job of summing up Soros's style than any of the Soros books. I can't get through Alchemy of Finance, but I really enjoyed reading about Soros in Becoming Rich. Icahn material is scarce, and Becoming Rich has material I haven't seen elsewhere, although Tier did tell me by e-mail that some of it came from the now out-of-print biography, King Icahn.
If you're an individual investor, you should read this book. If you're an educated financial professional, you've probably swallowed a fair amount of pure garbage as a part of your formal education. This book can help you discard it.
If you enjoy reading stories and anecdotes about business and great investors, you'll love this book. It doesn't hurt that, along the way, Tier calls out the principles that Buffett, Icahn and Soros used to get rich.
So...it's a useful book, a unique though simple approach to the topic, loaded with ultra-specific examples, delivered with a sense of urgency, fun and story-telling throughout.
~ Dan Ferris, Editor, Extreme Value

Worthless.......2005-08-13
This book is completely worthless. The strategies within this text constantly contradict themselves. For example don't take risks - focus on keeping what you have rather than building on what you've got. Then it goes on to say, risk; however, is in the eye of the beholder. One of the "strategies" in this book actually speaks of predicting the market before a trend even occurs. I guess the average Joe investor will be able to predict future market trends before the experts do, huh? Basically this book reads as follows, invest in strong companies and/or companies that are deeply discounted, but fundamentally sound ... Don't diversify your portfolio ... Put all your eggs in one basket or just a few baskets. Be able to predict the future so that you can put your money into a sector that is about to take off, etc. If you are looking to build your wealth I would say step one is saving the money you would have spend purchasing this book and look else ware.
