Book Description
During the reigns of Louis XV (1723-74) and Louis XVI (1774-92), fashion and furniture were not simply meant to be beautiful but were also intended to arouse, attract, and seduce. Published in response to the critically acclaimed and hugely popular exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum in the fall of 2004, Dangerous Liaisons focuses on fashion and its interplay with the paintings, furniture, and decorative arts of eighteenth-century France. Featuring beautiful color photographs of the exhibition’s installation, details of the garments, and supplementary historical material, the book demonstrates how the extravagant clothing of the period reiterated the splendor of Rococo and Neoclassical interiors.

Great text and pictures. I only wish there were more details of the fashion.
Disappointment.......2007-07-31

late 18th century fashions at their best.......2005-02-24
A lovely collection of 64 period fashion plates from Galerie des Modes. The plates cover the years from 1778-1787 and give a good representation of French high fashion in the years leading up to the French Revolution. The plates include court gowns, undress gowns, stays, day ensembles, riding habits, children's frocks and more. Complete with translated descriptions of each outfit and a decent glossary of terms.
Drool-worthy does not begin to describe in the goodies contained within. This lovely and inexpensive resource is a must for anyone interested in late century fashions. Get one for research and one to take apart and frame for your sewing room walls.
A helpful visual overview of late 18th century fashion.......2001-08-08
Stella Blum has selected plates of 18th century fashion from the Metropolitan Museum's collection and reproduced them here in full colour.
You certinally don't get all the plates produced in the 18th century but what you get is a helpful and representitive selection. This is one of the few books where you can see actual colour plates all reproduced in a sequence like this.
If you have any interest in 18th french fashion this book is both [inexpensive] and invaluable.
Book Description
This charming book examines European dress as it evolved in eighteenth-century France, the country which (with occasional challenges from Britain) had already established itself as the arbiter of fashionable taste in this most elegant of eras.
Customer Reviews:
A thorough and much needed publication!.......1998-07-24
While much attention has been paid to the period dress of Great Britain, continental Europe has been ignored for the most part. This book adds significantly to the available literature on French fashions during the last century of the French monarchy. Readers and researchers alike will find it invaluable and very interesting!
Book Description
Mixing film history with social history, Reel Patriotism examines the role played by the American film industry during World War I and the effects of the industry’s pragmatic patriotism in the decade following the war. Looking at such films as Joan the Woman and Wings and at the war-time activities of Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin, film distributors, including George Kleine, and the National Association of the Motion Picture Industry, this book shows how heavily publicized gestures of patriotism benefited the reputation and profits of the movie business.
Leslie Midkiff DeBauche shows how the United States government’s need to garner public support for the war, conserve food, raise money, and enlist soldiers was met by the film industry. Throughout the nineteen months of American involvement in World War I, film studios supported the war effort through the production of short instructional films, public speaking activities of movie stars, the civic forum provided by movie theaters, and the National Association of the Motion Picture Industry’s provision of administrative personnel to work directly with government agencies. While feature films about the war itself never dominated the release schedules of film distributors, they did become a staple film industry offering throughout the late 1910s and 1920s.
The film industry had much to gain, DeBauche demonstrates, from working closely with the U.S. government. Though the war posed a direct challenge to the conduct of business as usual, the industry successfully weathered the war years. After the war, film producers, distributors, and exhibitors were able to capitalize on the good will of the movie-goer and the government that the industry’s war work created. It provided a buffer against national censorship when movie stars became embroiled in scandal, and it served as a selling point in the 1920s when major film companies began to trade their stock on Wall Street.

Money was the name of the game then, too........1997-09-13
DeBauche shows that while the U.S. Government used
Hollywood to raise enlistments and money, and to encourage
home involvement in the war in general, Hollywood
also benefitted from its patriotic partnership with
the government, both during and after the war.
Above all, though Hollywood was no doubt sincere in
its (trumpeted) patriotism, its decision-making was
driven by rational evaluation of domestic and
foreign markets.

Valuable point of reference.......2006-06-01
Frequently used by Dake-Bonoist clergy, it has point by point cross references to Strong's Concordance as well as Dake's Annotated Study Bible.
A Must Have for all U2 fans.......2003-05-29
Filled with intriguing facts--from the origin of Bono's name (a hearing aid store called Bonovox, which means "good voice" in Latin) to the story of how the band got its start (a notice posted by Larry while all the members of the band were still in high school)--Mark Chatterton has compiled an extensive guide to one of the greatest bands of all time. With a fresh and entertaining writing style, this encyclopedia is highly recommended for both casual and fanatical U2 fans.
Nice book!.......2002-07-04
Its about time someone truly wrote an authentic "Encyclopedia" about U2. I bought it for the soul reason that it's about my favorite group (yes i am a fanatic). My opinion might be a little biased but I think if you've ever wanted to know anything, and quite possibly everything, about U2 then this is the book. Its not to be read like a normal book, but to flip through it. Come across a concert you might have attended, find out some tidbit about the members or the band as a whole that you didn't know, or just as a refrence for the fellow fanatic.
All you ever wanted to know about U2 + MORE!.......2002-06-30
This is my U2 Bible. It has everything you ever dreamed of knowing about U2, and it answers questions you've never even wondered about the band. It lists every single song ever recorded by the band and all the facts on them, the book has bios on all the band members, the stories of the tours, specific incidents in U2's career, and gives a wonderful history of their musical career. There is also a lot of facts about the band before they came together to form U2. I mean, how many people know all there is to know about U2? Well, read this book cover to cover, and you'll know probably more about U2 than they can remember for themselves! I used this book for a research paper on the band and used a good 50% of it as my main source! It's a must for any die-hard U2 fan. THE GOAL IS SOUL!
Only for us U2 fanatics........2002-04-08
This is really cool, a concise encyclopedia of U2. I have only read some of it and flipped though it so far, but it look's like nothing is left out. Articles on every Album, Song, Important concerts, important people around the band, and on and on. This is not for the casual fan but for US U2 fanatics.
Customer Reviews:
a very refreshing change of pace.......2005-10-06
I recently had finished the War of the Spider Queen series. That series was terrible (see my scathing review of the last book). It left me annoyed and unsatisfied, so I set out to find a different sort of fantasy book. This one fit the bill.
Unlike the typical Dragonlance or Forgotten Realms book, this book progresses in multiple acts and has numerous interesting and often funny twists. The book gets particularly funny in the last few chapters.
I've read about authors who boast that they don't know how a book is going to end until they finish writing it. I personally find that sort of writing to be pathetic at best. Lord Toede isn't like that at all. This book is a wonderfully intricate lattice of events and characters. I really wish there was an audiobook version of this book.
In short, it was a very refreshing change of pace. I'm actually worried about what I'm going to read next. This is a tough act to follow.
You mean that there's a good Dragonlance novel?.......2001-11-21
With an exception to the original twins chronicle, most Dragonlance novels are good books to read for the purposes of pointlessly killing time, to be doorstops, shredder material for your cat's litter box etc. Lord Toede however is one of the best Dragonlance books AND one of the best D&D books I've ever read. Instead of inundating the reader with a bunch of mandatory fight scenes, maudlin and thinly created characters or pointless plot twists that you neither care about nor like, Lord Toede does something different.
It makes you laugh. A lot. The main character is a fat egotistical hobgoblin and the author develops the story from that point. This is a really great book. A great deal of fun, lots of humor and makes you realize how weak so many other D&D novels are and how they rely on so many redundant themes and images.
A REALLY GREAT CHRISTMAS ITEM TOO! Send it to that special gamer in yoru life. They'll appreciate it.
Stooges-esque.......2000-11-30
When I first found this book about two months ago, I had no idea what to expect. I figured that this novel would be about a vicious, depraved, and ignoble hobgoblin named Toede who is forced into an experiment by two middle-managers in the Abyss.
I was correct, but what I did not expect was to be rolling on the floor, howling with malevolent glee, with everyone staring at me as if I were quite mad. Jeff Grobb (spelling?) spins a wondrous tale of high adventure and high jinks, chronicling Lord Toede's struggles againts treacherous allies, old friends, and a nasty disposition.
Yes, Jeff weaves a hilarious tale, but he proves his mettle as an author and projects a deeper meaning into a tale originally meant to be a farce.
Stands alone as the best comedic fantasy novel from TSR.......1999-09-15
This book actually made me chuckle out loud, which is saying a lot for a fantasy novel. I don't mean to say that many authors haven't used humor to good effect in Forgotten Realms and Dragon Lance novels. They have, but never as effectivley as Jeff Grubb. Jeff pokes fun at the afterlife by having two middle-management minions of hell gamble with Toede's fate. The bet: If given a second chance, could an evil guy like Toede become selfless and noble. A "second chance" turns into a third and fourth and so on as Toede continuously reverts to his greedy, conniving self with hysterically fatal results. Does he eventually lift himself above his evil ways? I won't spoil the ending. Don't be disappointed that the book doesn't spend the multitude of pages it would take to describe Toede's life prior to his "first" death, like the other novels in the Dragon Lance Villains series. That's missing the point of the story Jeff wrote here. Besides do we really care what Toede was doing before now. Personally I don't think the character had that much appeal until Jeff wrote this story about him anyway.
The funniest Dragonlance novel without Tas!.......1999-09-06
I'll admit it: This was the first Dragonlance book I ever actually bought. I read it over a 3 hour period one Christmas, and had assembled most of the series within the next month. This was just laugh out loud funny. I would have payed good money to have seen this referred to in Dragons of Summer Flame. Read this book! It's hillarious offers a great commentary on a world of high fantasy. I hope Jeff does MORE Toade stuff someday!

What if every corporation in the world devoted one percent of its revenues, one percent of its employees' time, and one percent of its stock to the communities it serves? What would happen? It would change the world. This book suggests that such a radical change is possible, and lays out the blueprint to do so, with a radically new model in which companies leverage all of their assets-including employees, equity, products, and relationships-in order to provide real value to the communities in which they operate. Here is the essential guide for everyone, from the newly minted entrepreneur to the Fortune 500 CEO who wants to ensure that doing business goes hand in hand with doing good.

BOOK REVIEW - 'Compassionate' gives readers a lot
02.23.04
Andrew Gordon
A breath of fresh air amongst the many business books out there, Compassionate Capitalism is full of insight and trade secrets simply about building the bottom line. At a time when many corporations have cut back their philanthropy, Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff shows how giving back is always a good idea.
Benioff leads from example, demonstrating Salesforce's own philanthropic philosophy. He includes dozens of other examples from the likes of Hasbro, Timberland, and Cisco Systems.
While the book is repetitive at times, it ultimately proves insightful, using the examples to show how companies establish a culture of philanthropy, how they involve staff, how they reach out globally, and how they maintain their giving during tough times. Perhaps most importantly, the authors note that corporate philanthropy 'must be more than lip service or devotion to giving as a way to generate PR coverage.' The book is a nice reminder that shareholders are not the only ones who have a stake in a company's success.
Great examples for making your company a community asset.......2004-02-12
found Compassionate Capitalism to be an extraordinary collection of practical examples for companies who want to make a difference in the world.
As CEO of a small and growing business I plan to implement some of these ideas immediately - giving paid time off for my employees and putting aside some of our equity for future charitable growth as two examples. This book provides a blueprint for small and large companies alike to make more of an impact in the communities they operate in. I recommend it to any other CEO or professional that wants to `step up' their level of giving.
great book.......2004-02-07
I really hope this kind of book published in my country, too. Only a few companies realize that they should do good things in a community. Rather, most of companies still pour their resources for doing well here in Japan. This book is great firstly because, it states that, no matter how large the company is, there should be a way to become a good citizen in a community. I am working in a company with 30 peoples, which is not so large. This book suggests that there is a business-philanthropy integrating model that my company can follow. Secondly because this book points out that a company has a power to change the society better. Most of us do not aware but a company has much more resources and opportunities than we imagine. This book describes how a company takes advantage of their resources to give back to a community. That is the new model of integrating business and philanthropy.
Inspirational yet still practical "how-to" guide.......2004-02-06
The book is clearly written and has well explained steps on how any corporation can integrate philanthropy into their corporate culture. The examples include both large and small businesses and the authors demonstrate that a company can do well both for their shareholders and community.
I work in Silicon Valley and this book will help me as I work to convince others that the start-ups we work in and back need the integrated philanthropy described in this book.
