Matisse and the Subject of Modernism
ASIN: 0520221826 |
Book Description
The Joy of Life investigates the significance of the idyllic in French painting from the early 1890s to World War I, considering a fascinating series of pastoral, mythic, and utopian landscapes. Responding to rapid artistic and social shifts in this period, French artists shaped a dreamlike imagery of mythic community, individual fantasy, and sensual joie de vivre in the midst of mass society. This beautifully illustrated study focuses on three exemplary imaginings of idyll: Puvis de Chavannes's decoration for the Paris Hôtel de Ville, L'été, of 1891, Paul Signac's anarchist Au temps d'harmonie of 1895, and Henri Matisse's fauve Bonheur de vivre of 1905-6, each a monumental and ambitious work exhibited publicly in Paris.
Werth weaves together complex analyses of these paintings and others by Manet, Gauguin, Seurat, Cézanne, and less well known artists with a consideration of their critical reception, literary parallels, and the social and cultural milieu. She moves deftly from artistic concerns with tradition and avant-gardism, decoration and social art, composition and figuration to contemporary debates over human origins and social organization, collective consciousness and individual subjectivity, the fragmentation of history and anticipations of the future. Exploring the preoccupation of the turn-of-the-century imagination with time and memory, nationalism and colonialism, and competing constructions of national, racial, and gender identity, Werth analyzes the contributions of writers as diverse as Baudelaire, Durkheim, Bergson, Kropotkin, Morris, Nietzsche, Mallarmé, and Freud.
Successfully integrating art history and close visual analysis with literary and social history and psychoanalytic interpretation, The Joy of Life is a rich interdisciplinary work that makes a remarkable contribution to our understanding of modernism one hundred years ago.

Book Description
Published to coincide with a groundbreaking exhibition opening at the brand-new Mode Museum, or MoMu, in Antwerp, and traveling to the V&A in London, Spectres addresses the relationship of contemporary fashion to history, creating a collage of visual references that offer a fascinating insight into the origins of current themes such as alienation, trauma, and phantasmagoria. Details of historic dress and images of 19th-century fairground architecture lead into the work of contemporary designers such as Viktor and Rolf, Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan, Christian Lacroix, and Shelley Fox.
In addition, the book describes the exhibition installation, which draws on a skeletal early industrial/metropolitan aesthetic to remind us of its historical connections. Also reproduced are commissioned designs for a giant shadow lantern by the New York fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo. AUTHOR BIO: Judith Clark is a V&A/London College of Fashion Fellow in the V&A's research department. She was a contributor to the V&A's Radical Fashion.

Download Description
Using crystal clear language this book conveys the most current principles in digital image processing, both theoretical and practical. In addition to the background theory needed to understand the process, the author explains in depth the practical applications to various industries such as digital cinema, video compression, and streaming media. "Digital Image Processing," is perfect for engineers practicing in the field as well as students of electrical engineering. It describes the basics of digital image processing in an easy-to-understand fashion keeping in mind that practicing engineers don't have much time to research related materials in depth. Notations and math are kept to a minimum so as not to lose sight of the topics in question, and technically difficult portions are explained in appendices.
Customer Reviews:
Unique and clear book on digital image processing.......2007-06-21
The author has provided the digital image and cinema industry with a serious text on image processing. Although the stated focus is digital cinema, this book can be utilized by anyone interested in the algorithms of digital image processing. The book is aimed primarily at professionals who are already involved in the field, but it could also be easily used as a textbook on the subject. Derivations are kept to a minimum and numerous examples in MATLAB are provided to illustrate the various digital processes as well as their effects. There are two chapters in particular that are often omitted in image processing texts. One is the chapter on human visual perception which emphasizes the importance of often mentioned phenemona such as contrast sensitivity as well as less often mentioned non-linear effects and their perception. The other is the chapter on image compression which is extensive and includes spatial, transform, and wavelet domain algorithms in detail. Most interesting is the section devoted to the use of the human vision model in the compression process. Although computer vision itself is largely omitted from the book, the author did include a discussion of basic edge detection methods.
Chapter 1 introduces the readers to digital processing techniques in a brief fashion. Chapter 2 is a review of two-dimensional discrete signals and systems. If you are rusty on this subject, you will probably need an outside source to help refresh your memory. Chapter 3 describes human visual perception from a system point of view. Human vision plays a key role in the design of image and video compression and display systems, thus the chapter describes vision models in detail, in particular the model that predicts masking effects in digital imaging. Chapters four through six, though interesting, are pretty standard fare for digital image processing texts.
The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is introduced in chapter 7. Without derivations and mathematical proofs, the computation of the DWT using subband coding is described and illustrated with examples. The chapter also explains the connection between wavelets and quadrature mirror filters and shows how to compute a wavelet function from the analysis and synthesis filters with examples. Chapter 8 is devoted to the discussion of image and video compression techniques. This rather extensive chapter describes the basic ideas used in the JPEG2000 and MPEG-2 standards.
Through chapter eight, the processes and algorithms described could be useful to anyone in the field of image processing. In chapter nine the author turns to concerns specific to digital cinema. He does this by addressing some issues behind the special requirements of digital cinema when he discusses two approaches to image compression that meet its requirements - QUALCOMM's system and a system based on the JPEG2000 compression standard. These two systems are interesting because the QUALCOMM system uses the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) as the compression vehicle while the latter uses the DWT for compression. The chapter is rounded out with a discussion of some of the characteristics of digital projectors.
One particular good characteristic of this book is Appendix D, which contains a variety of suggested MATLAB-based projects on the subject of digital image processing. Even if you already have several good texts on the subject of digital image processing, this one is excellent and has a unique contribution for those interested in applying image processing to the interesting field of digital cinema.
Great book, a Must Have!.......2006-05-20
This is truly a great book, the math notations are clear and concise. A lot of good reference pointers in the book make it not only a fundamental textbook but also a good research resource. Many sample codes in Matlab are provided. For anyone working on image signal processing, it is a great resource library. The book is equally valuable to professioinals working on this subject and students (senior undergrad or first year graduate students) becoming familiar with the field.
There is only one minor limitation on what it covers on the digital video compression section. Some of the newest techniques used by the H.264 and VC1 were not mentioned here -- such as intra frame prediction, deblocking filter, as well as mathematic coding used in the entropy coding. There is a discussion on the adaptive block based DCT, which is very interesting. Although a comparison with the current adaptive variable size tracking block and Hadamard transformation would be valuable as well.
This might be a good incentive for Dr. Thyagarajan to write a 2nd edition :). In case he plans to write a new edition, maybe he can elaborate a bit more on the last chapter about what were Qualcomm's practical problems in this project and how they were resolved -- I would imagine he could have enough material to expand the last chapter easily to 40-50 pages from 15 pages.
In summary, I like this book a lot, especially the wavelet section. It is one of the best and clearst treatments of the subject I have ever seen.
I highly recommend owning this book and reading it seriously!
Apply it to your engineering.......2006-04-21
I am involved in embedded applications. I currently work with scientific imaging sensors and real-time processing. This book has been useful and straight forward in my line of work. The chapter on human visual perception helped me to relate with camera issues. The book explains in a systematic manner how to apply discrete wavelet transforms to imaging and how to manipulate them. Overall, the materials in the book are easy to understand and have good examples. I highly recommend this book !!!
A Timely And Essential Book For Professionals And Students In Image Processing With A Focus On Image Compression and Enhancement.......2006-04-18
The book "Digital Image Processing with Application to Digital Cinema" is an excellent treatment on digital image processing techniques. Mathematical derivations are kept to a minimum so as not to lose sight of the main principles of image processing. Yet the book can easily serve the needs of both professionals and students equally well. The chapter on human visual perception is treated very well giving all details of known visual models, which are used later in the chapter on image compression. Image enhancement is an essential ingredient in all aspects of image processing and the book aptly covers enhancement techniques in detail with numerous examples. Transform techniques in general and wavelet transform in particular are given adequate coverage that most can follow. The chapter on image compression takes up these transforms and explains clearly how to apply them in achieving quality image and video compression. The book ends with a chapter on case studies involving two state-of-the art systems for distribution of movies in digital format. I enjoyed this book very much and I highly recommend it to all professionals, both in universities and industries.
This book really fills a need in the industry.......2006-04-18
This book provides a very practical up-to-date introduction and explanation of the concepts and state of the art behind the fast changing world of digital image processing, specifically for higher-end applications such as television and digital cinema. The author does a good job of providing easy-to-understand explanations and examples of the basics of this complicated science that allow a non-technical professional to understand the basics of how digital processing is used in video and image applications. But, he also goes further to explain the complicated mathematical principles of various image processing technologies for the benefit of the serious student. The MATLAB examples in the appendix and the suggested "for further study" exercises help provide tools and direction for readers who want to experiment with the principles in the book. Overall, this book should be very useful to the professional or student trying to understand the current industry thinking regarding digital processing and compression of images for high-end presentation applications like digital cinema at whatever depth of understanding they are needing.
Book Description
A fast and fun guide to learning one of America’s leading recreational pursuits. From choosing the right ball to the art of making strikes. Endorsed by Remo Picchietti, Bowling Hall of Famer.
Customer Reviews:
Great starting off point.......2005-09-07
I have always enjoyed bowling, but never had any training. I am joining a league, and want to bowl better. This book taught me a lot. I practiced the "shadow bowling" technique at home, and on my next outing to the lanes - I improved my average by 40! (from a 150 to a 194)
Great book for anyone new to bowling.......2002-12-18
This is what every non-fiction book should be. Brief, to-the-point, and effective. And this book is very brief. You may probably be able to read it in a half hour and then head straight to the alley and practice. This book is very clear and provides easy-to-follow pictures, too. I understand everything the author is trying to say. Lastly, this book is effective because I followed its exact instructions and I'm able to bowl with a nice hook, something I always wanted to know how to do. Although you won't be able to learn more advanced skills or more fancier hooks, this is not suppose to be a comprehensive guide to bowling.
So THAT'S How Its Done.......2001-04-07
This book lived up to its promise. I am brand new to the 'real' way to bowl, and I found this book very helpful. The format is great. I think that the book would do any newcomer some good. There is a style to Werner's writing that can only be termed 'relaxed.' I am trying to develop what I have learned from this book. It is a great springboard into the sport.
Quite outdated figures and pictures........1999-06-16
Too simple, too brief and quite out-dated figues and pictures illustration. Anyone buy this book and hopping to learn something out from it will be quite disappointed.
Solid Fundamentals for Beginners or Returners........1999-03-26
When asked to go bowling again, after not having done so in over twenty years, I found my game had simply disappeared. I was a beginner again. This little book, lavishly illustrated, written with wit and humor, put those pesky little fundamentals back in perspective. Bowling is fun, and Werner's book reminds us that it's fun, or should be.
Werner gives a brief history of the sport, some prominent bowlers which will surprise a number of people, and some solid techniques to get your game back in shape with very little effort. He also gives a very useful table of common errors, and suggested corrections.
But most of all, Doug Werner reminds the reader that the way to learn to bowl is to go bowling. Read the book, then get out there and knock `em down.
A bargain at Amazon's price, this book will delight any beginner, and is invaluable to the rookie or out of practice bowler. Five stars aren't enough.

Customer Reviews:
Good way to get prepared.......2007-07-04
It just makes sense, and is very thorough. Many things I would not have thought about, or gotten around to thinking about - we live in such a fast paced world that it would have been a challenge to do. Luckily, I had a cross country trip, so this gave me the time to read this book and compile my "list" of notes and apply them to my upcoming job change. Bottom line - many good new perspectives that I simply would not have thought of. Highly recommended.
Practical and Actionable. It is an excellent book on the subject of management transitions........2007-06-22
As a human resources professional, I have seen a great deal of management transition. Many succeed but some do not. Unfortunately for our people and our organizations those that do not leave a stream of damage in their wake.
Recently I wrote a review about Scott Eblin's, "The Next Level" and I called it a real disappointment. This book is not and it is a far more actionable and practical approach to managing transitions.
One of the reasons this book is so practical is that each section not only provides you with clear direction but each section also ends with an action checklist. This make creating a 90-day transition plan doable and improves your prospects for success.
Lastly, the steps from this book create a framework that a company can use to create a "transition strategy" for all its new and upwardly moving managers. This alone will enable a firm to increase their odds that a new hire or promotion will be in the "win" column.
*****First 90 Days.......2007-06-10
I only ordered this for a superior and he is VERY VERY happy with the book...he asked for it by name so we ordered three copies! Thank you for the great service you provide.
A Must Read.......2007-05-30
Great book for all business leaders who are advancing to a new role or coming from the outside into an organization. Simple, easy to read with pertinent lessons for a successful transition.
Some great tips, but often not well developed or organized.......2007-05-28
We bought this book along with the "New Leader's 100-Day Action Plan" and read them side by side.
Pro:
-"STaRS" concept is excellent. Start-ups, Turnarounds, Realignments and Sustaining success are all different scenarios that you might be thrown into, and the environment you join directly affects what you need to do.
-Checklists are helpful, when available, to boil thoughts down to the most essential elements
-There are many good tips interspersed throughout the book that are good reminders of the basics you need to adhere to in order to be successful
-Breaks the "sink or swim mindset" often associated with starting a new position
Con:
-Does not really address the time opportunity BEFORE you start a job and in my experience is a major lost opportunity that I've been able to surprise and delight. Set up pre-meetings, arranging for email/phone and a place to sit, etc. as a chance to listen and learn without the pressure to perform. Any items that can/should be done ahead of time appear to me as afterthoughts, underdeveloped, and often out of sequence in this text.
-Would not serve as a handy reference... better chapter summaries and a stronger introduction with time lines and meaty chapter outline would have been helpful both now and in the future
-I think that many good concepts like "STaRS" were underdeveloped or under leveraged... I sense more detail that was perhaps omitted
-To me, many of the illustrations were filler and did not offer additional information
-Sometimes poor or awkward word choice or idea sequence (e.g. rather than "Promote Yourself" why not just call it "Prepare Yourself" as this is what you are really saying, so why not just say it that way?)
-Real life examples were unnecessarily detailed, consuming time and space that I think could be better used by the author as he's clearly brilliant and has some great observations
-I think that the scope is too narrow, picks up after you've started the job (day 1) and neglects the opportunity (and chaos) beforehand of the interview, moving, doing "pre-work" to get your basics at work set-up
Bottom line: While there were some interesting moments, I was disappointed. The book does offer several cautionary tales of CEOs who crashed and burned, and if nothing else serves as both warning and motivation to be smarter about your transition.
Book Description
This is a guide for the new manager or the manager coming back to work. This book is intended to make you an impact player in a 90 day timeframe. The strategy can be used in almost any position and at various levels.
Customer Reviews:
Gave this book away...but made some notes first.......2007-06-27
I read through this book in about an hour or so. I felt most of it would be very remedial for many managers. Since I am not a manager (and not going to be), much of this book's content did not pertain to me.
However, two topics did stand out. The description of the four managerial types (Laid Back, Ready-Fire-Aim, Popular & Hard Nose) with 'handling' suggestions would be useful for anyone at any level. The topic of preparing for the 'miss' (missed sales goal, missed product deliverable, missed date, etc.) was very informative, too. Few of us ever prepare to fail and when it happens to us, we are unprepared to explain it.
I decided NOT to keep this book as part of my permanent library, but I did give this book to someone who coachs people in job search for their personal lending library. It was worth the $8.75 I paid for it because I got free Amazon shipping, but not much more....
don't waste your money.......2007-04-14
anyone who doesn't already know the extremely rudimentary "information" provided in this very elementary book wouldn't even make it through an interview. i have found few books as disappointing as this one. it's bad enough to make me wonder whether or not it's some kind of a hoax.
Your First 90 Days in a New Job (How to Make an Impact).......2007-02-21
An excellent example of why not to buy a book for its title. The prophetic cover photo depicts an empty wasteland. Between the covers lies a stream of consciousness devoid of research, common sense, practical experience and humor. The author must have devoted at least two hours to writing this book. No, it wouldn't have taken that long for a competent typist.
Don't waste your money......................2006-03-24
This book was extremely remedial and provided little insight relative to starting a new job. If you're starting a new job and want a roadmap for success I would suggest purchasing a book with some thought provoking substance.
Superficial.......2005-05-30
I'm reading a number of books about making a job transition and put this on the bottom of the pile. The few insights offered in the 45 pages of content are far outweighed by high school-style advice on "dealing with brown nosers" and how to have a conversation with an employee who has a "personal hygiene problem." A far superior book is The First 90 Days by Michael Watkins. Or, if you want help in making good professional decisions, see What Do I Do Now? by Charles Foster. Or if you need to know more about what makes a person a success in business, get The 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws of Business Success by Brian Tracy.

Better than nothing.......2004-04-01
The previous review is good. But then it has a lot of good stuff too. i.e. what kinda questions to ask the interviewer. I never even thought of these questions. Also how to go about it from day one. The last few chapters were better than the first few. Bottomline, by the time u get around reding this book u have already decided quite a few thigns which the first three - four chapters help u settle. On the whole its not very thick, so i do recommend u have a look if u're moving out of school. Best of luck with the job market.
ADVICE FOR A COLLEGE KID ABOUT TO GET ON THE INSIDE TRACK.......2001-11-15
This is another one of the books that gives a heads up to a college kid about to enter the corporate world. It works you through a bunch of exercises to see which career you would like, as if you had a choice between careers in the modern job market and every career leads to an executive track. This sets the prospective college kids' expectations too high, misses on the relevant advice of getting internships before graduating, and is useless to anyone who knows what they want to do, anyone out of college a few years, and anybody fresh out of college looking for a career grade salaried position for anything over six months, they are liable to hrow this book down in disguist!
