Good Basic Info But Non-Specific.......2006-02-25
I probably had the wrong expectations for this book but I was hoping it would (quickly) help me validate whether info I've used required permission. I suppose it did this in an indirect way, however, the free use stuff included old songs etc. that were not appropriate for my topic.
Book is well written so long as it fits with what you need to validate.

I made the mistake of buying the first edition of this book (published in 2001), but found it to be an excellent guide to the legal issues involved with public domain textual material. I have already published one book which relied heavily on public domain materials, and am working on a second, and when I bought this book I had several specific questions that I was trying to answer. This book answered all of them, as well as some that I hadn't thought of! I'll probably end up buying the second edition, just to see what has changed in the last few years.

This fat and informative book is a goldmine for anyone interested in public domain works, whether writings, music, art, films or just about anything else. The author, Attorney Stephen Fishman, begins with an examination of copyright laws and the public domain. After that, the book begins each of the chapters on copyrightable materials with a handy checklist for use in determining public domain status, and then launches into a discussion of how to determine the public domain status of such an item. After those useful chapters, the author examines the use of copyrighted and public domain works.
This is one of the most useful books I have ever encountered. It contains most everything you need to know in determining the public domain status of a work, and it is organized in a simple, easy-to-use format (ala the ___ for Dummies books), that is sure to inform the reader, and never lose him or her. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in whether or not something is in the public domain, and thus open to free use.
Another great NOLO publication!.......2002-08-09
NOLO writes legal books for the rest of us. I've used other NOLO books and gave this one a shot. I found this book to be a wonderful guide to the whole subject of public domain, from where to find it to how to use it effectively. It was also a great introduction to the history of public domain and its significance in the legal landscape of intellectual property. it's a great resourse for anyone that needs creative content for free!
An incredibly wonderful and useful book!!!!.......2002-03-22
As a writer of musical theatre, I am constantly brainstorming for new ideas and thinking about what works may be in the public domain to use. Finally there is a book that removes so much of the guess work. Stephen Fishman has written a book that is very "user friendly" and incredibly helpful. He gives all the important facts, and describes how to do your own research on copyright status (to avoid those heavy fees the goverment office charges!). It is also full of interesting sidebars, mini-charts of famous public domain works, tips, advice....everything you could ask for. I find myself just picking it up to flip through for fun....and now I practically I feel like an expert on the subject! In summary, this book is a must have!

Greedy parents?.......2005-12-11
I'm tired of this idea that parents should be encouraged exploit their own kids for money! This book teaches you how to brainwash your little one to think what that want is what you want (basically, money and fame). Who cares what the child actually wants?
The book teaches you that success in life is measured in fame and dollars. The title alone says it all: "Kids Plus Modeling Equal Money". Basically, the point that is made is that since you already have a kid, why not get your money's worth?
Even though it is proven that most kid celebrities whom are pushed too hard too young usually end up depressed and into hard-partying and drugs and alcohol, many parents are still convinced that fame plus fortune equals happiness. IT DOES NOT!
Ignore the off-putting title.......2001-11-14
Despite the rather offputting title, this book is actually pretty good and informative. It doesn't contain pictures, but it does take a rather unique approach from a parents perspective covering things such as managing expenses that seems very useful and could save lots of hassle and mistakes. Covers a wide range of topics and contains lots of information.

i'm glad i brought this wonderful addition to the movie. it's a wonderful collectors item. the picture were fabulous and the essays Taylor Hackford, Jamie Foxx and others were wonderful. this movie is a labor of pure love for the legend who will live in all of us who love him. i would like to take time out and thank Taylor Hackford for bring us this beautiful gift of a movie and to Jamie Foxx (i have a crush on you!) for bringing the spirit of Ray Charles to life once again. you guys are fabulous and be proud of what you did because i'm sure am. i love to look at this beautiful book. it's a wonderful coffee table book (it even goes with the decor in my livingroom! ;-) )

Some good info, but majorly outdated, sexist, and self-congratulatory.......2007-09-27
There are some good tips for selling in this book, and people who are in the car-sales business would probably enjoy it and benefit from it. Aside from that audience, however, this book is likely to disappoint. First of all, the information and the way its presented are extremely out of date. The book was originally written in the late seventies, and if it's been updated, it's hardly evident. There is a very sexist tone to the book -- not a malicious one, but just a product of its times. Nevertheless, it is pretty offputting. Secondly, a major portion of this book is dedicated to author Joe Girard working out his abusive childhood. This may have been therapeutic for Mr. Girard to write, and may be interesting for some to read, but if you're looking for sales tips, this whole portion of the book is going to be quite frustrating. And thirdly, although some of the sales tips can be applied to any type of selling, for the most part, this is a book for car salesmen -- period. Mr. Girard seems like a nice guy and one heck of a salesman, but this book did not even begin to live up to my expectations.

This book was such a waste of money and time spent reading it. Unless you are in the car sales business, this book will not do you any good. The title of the book in my opinion is decieving. The advice is basic and again it only pertains to an individual who sells cars. Not to mention, the author toots his own horn too much throughout the book. He spends so much time talking about his greatness at sales. Total turn-off.
Don't Buy This Book.......2007-07-24
Unless you are selling cars, I wouldn't waste your money. There are other books by Alan Loy McGinnis and Dr. Norman Vincent Peale that would be better for your salesmanship and positive attitude. Also a lot of material in this book is basic boilerplate if you talk to any experienced car salesperson.

Read this one cover to cover as fast as I could turn the pages. Gerard knows his stuff. I especially enjoyed the way he told about his life and how he got started. What he does seems like a lot of work...but if it is done correctly, time opens up for play and the money flows. If I were young again, I'd do this and make it happen.

A regular guy that years ago needed to feed his family so he started selling cars and didn't have a clue on what he was doing. All he knew was that he had to put food on the table.
