Dogs are better than all politicians........1997-08-04
This is another book review from Wolfie and Kansas, the boonie dogs from Toto, Guam. Jennifer Berman's "Why Dogs Are Better Than Republicans" has obvious strengths. The book is a collection of generally very cute cartoons that show, quite truthfully, why dogs are better than Republicans. In addition, inside the back cover there is a picture of the cartoonist with three good-looking dogs who seem quite content with her company, leading us to believe she must be a nice person, for a human.
Despite these obvious strenghts, the book only tells part of the story. While we may be better than Republicans, we still sometimes find them preferable to Democrats. The Democrats are the party of more and bigger government. More government means more leash laws. When someone tells a boonie dog, "I'm from the government, I'm here to help you", they usually mean, "I'm from the dog pound and I'm here to neuter you." (To be fair, we should note that sometimes it is hard to tell the law-and-order Republicans from the Democrats on these issues. In the last election for mayor of Toto, both a left-wing Leninist Democrat and a right-wing Mussolinian Republican ran on platforms of rounding up stray dogs.)
Putting aside human ideology, we dogs tend to divide human politicians into two groups. There are dog politicians, such as Fala's FDR, George Bush, and even ear-pulling LBJ. Then there are --grrrr--cat politicians, like Bill Clinton.
Jennifer Berman criticizes Tricky Dick's cynical use of Checkers. However, her effort to use the popularity of dogs to advance the image of a party of leash-law-lovers and a cat-President is nearly as cynical. A three-page section on "Why Dogs Are Better Than Democrats" at the end of this book was not enough. While this was an entertaining book, it would have been better if the subject had been "Why Dogs Are Better Than All Politicians", or, better yet, "Why Dogs Are Better Than Humans"
Book Description
Dame Edna Everage - housewife, megastar, investigative journalist, social anthropologist, children's book illustrator, chanteuse, swami, monstre sacre, polymath, adviser to British royalty, grief counselor, spin doctor, and gifted woman in the world today. The seeds of stardom were planted in Melbourne, Australia when her career as a performing artiste was strictly a cult following. In the 1960's, she did a series of one-woman shows and occasional stage and TV appearances in England with Barry Humphries. She spends her time visiting world leaders and jet-setting between her homes in Malibu, London, Sydney, and Switzerland. Her hobbies are having afternoon tea with Stephen Hwking and doing compassionate photography.

Read this book, possums!.......2002-02-21
I've been a fan of Dame Edna's for years and I have to say that this faux autobiography is one of the funniest books I have ever read. Starting from her humble beginnings (with mauve hair even then) we see our lovely Edna blossom into womanhood, marriage and motherhood---though she rarely has time to properly look after the kids because of her hectic and famous life. As an advisor to the rich, famous and royal (a spin doctor, in her words, to the Queen), Edna becomes a superstar in her own right---struggling with her troublesome childhood friend, Madge Allsop, who Edna lets us know, is a burden a good deal of the time! Edna deals with many dramas----her eccentric children, her husband with his desperate prostrate problem and the trials of being so easily recognizable to the general public. If you wanna read a book with a great deal of laughs, try to find a copy of this book. You won't be disappointed.
Therapy on a Tape.......2001-05-08
This is one of my all-time must-haves in the car...so that I can relisten to it any time LIFE gets a little too real, and I need a mini-mental vacation while driving. (It's an ideal gift too.)
It's a joy, and Dame Edna never fails to bring me back to a gentler reality.
I'm sorry to say that it hasn't been rereleased in Audio CD. I'm hoping that it will be available in that format in the future.
Delightful........2000-02-25
Barry Humphries admirably fleshes out the life of his most famous comic creation - Dame Edna Everage from Moonee Ponds housewife to beaming megastar. Like on TV, Edna is an outrageously egotistical tyrant who we find out has bullied Madge Allsop since High School and even danced with her cultural compatriate Les Patterson at a teenage formal. Here you will see how Edna saved Barry Humphries stage debut and has had him under her solicitors thumbs for several years. For sharp Edna/Barry enthusiasts there are a few questionable moves Humphries has made in the book though - 1) He is cheeky in that he leaves out a number of years in Edna's life as he did in his own biography. Why? 2) Edna started off as shy and genteel in the 50's. Here she is as bold as brass all the way. No real character change. 3) Her nephew "Barry McKenzie" is never mentioned. They did go to England together and do two movies together after all. Yet, despite these quibbles, there is Humphries characteristic razor sharp wit throughout and even a moving epilogue where Edna visits her husbands grave. In this there is a wonderful pathos which makes Humphries dedication to his character and his audience first class. Fans should look for other out of print Edna titles such as "Dame Ednas Coffee Table Book" if they enjoy this.
A Must Read for Dame Edna Fans!.......1999-01-04
If you love Dame Edna (and who doesn't?) and her rapier-sharp wit and wordly wisdom, this is the book for you. This autobiographical journey follows the housewife megastar from her sometimes painful childhood in Moonee Ponds to her meeting the man she would marry (and later purchase a new mechanical prostate for) to her meteoric rise to stardom (accompanied by her ever-present, though not always welcome bridesmaid, Madge). It's a laugh a minute, not unlike the Douglas Adams series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. it will make you laugh out loud on public transport and guffaw during your tea-break (even though Dame Edna might disapprove of these slight breaches of etiquette). Pick it up, possums. It's likely the closest you'll ever get to this megastar.
Fabulous!.......1998-07-15
I purchased this book on tape for the listening pleasure of my friends and myself on a recent vacation. We have never laughed so hard! Since then, I've listened to it numerous times, and each time I pick up something new. Dame Edna is a true gem!

What do the movie masterpieces Gaslight, Stella Dallas, Now, Voyager, and Letter from an Unknown Woman have in common? Stanley Cavell, Harvard professor and film lover, believes they make up a small genre: the Hollywood melodrama of the unknown woman. In this sequel to his book Pursuits of Happiness, Cavell argues that these darkly beautiful films respond to issues raised in such comedies of remarriage as The Philadelphia Story, Adam's Rib, and The Awful Truth. The author's prose is sometimes challenging, but he remains one of the most interesting critics of film genre and classic Hollywood. One would be hard-pressed to find an author who writes about individual films with his kind of rigor, or who connects the various issues they raise to so many different philosophies of mind and art. The section in which Cavell refutes the academic commonplace that the camera offers viewers only the male gaze is particularly well done. In it, Cavell lists sequence after sequence in classic Hollywood films in which audiences are invited to look through the eyes--and the desires--of women. --Raphael Shargel
Book Description
What is marriage? Can a relationship dedicated to equality, friendship,
and mutual education flower in an atmosphere of romance? What are the
paths between loving another and knowing another? Stanley Cavell
identified a genre of classic American films that engaged these
questions in his study of comedies of remarriage, Pursuits of
Happiness. With Contesting Tears, Cavell demonstrates that a
contrasting genre, which he calls "the melodrama of the unknown woman,"
shares a surprising number and weave of concerns with those comedies.
Cavell provides close readings of four melodramas he finds definitive of
the genre: Letter from an Unknown Woman, Gaslight, Now
Voyager, and Stella Dallas. The women in these melodramas,
like the women in the comedies, demand equality, shared education, and
transfiguration, exemplifying for Cavell a moral perfectionism he
identifies as Emersonian. But unlike the comedies, which portray a quest
for a shared existence of expressiveness and joy, the melodramas trace
instead the woman's recognition that in this quest she is isolated. Part
of the melodrama concerns the various ways the men in the films (and the
audiences of the films) interpret and desire to force the woman's
consequent inaccessibility.
"Film is an interest of mine," Stanley Cavell has written, "or say a
love, not separate from my interest in, or love of, philosophy." In
Contesting Tears Cavell once again brilliantly unites his two
loves, using detailed and perceptive musings on melodrama to reflect on
philosophical problems of skepticism, psychoanalysis, and perfectionism.
As he shows, the fascination and intelligence of such great stars as
Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, and Barbara Stanwyck illuminate, as they
are illuminated by, the topics and events of these beloved and enduring
films.
Customer Reviews:
Cavell's WORST book.......2002-08-11
No, I haven't read them all, but this is a severely disappointing follow-up to Cavell's near-perfect previous volume on Hollywood film, "Pursuits of Happiness" (a collection of essays on, mostly, screwball comedies). Especially given that the idea for the volume is such a great one, foreshadowed in an earlier essay (included here, on "Letter from an Unknown Woman") in which Cavell suggestively drew a connection between Hollywood melodrama and Freud's early work on hysteria as a new way of getting at our author's trademark obsession, epistemological problems as human problems. But what made "Pursuits of Happiness" such a tremendous work of film criticism is that whatever Cavell's pretensions, one always believed that he loved the movies he was writing about. Here that feeling is missing; instead you get the feeling he doesn't understand the point of most of these movies at all, and even (shudder!) that his attitude to the genre is condescending. Well, no critic or philosopher can do everything. A sorry introduction to either Cavell or the great Hollywood genre of the women's picture, which still awaits the kind of exposition that Cavell could have given it, at his best. The two stars are for the excellent essay on "Now, Voyager"; the essay on "Gaslight" is an interesting philosophical read, with very little to do with the film; the essay on "Stella Dallas" should be avoided like the plague.
Not bad, certainly, but not the best........1999-09-20
To say that Cavell's prose is challenging is charitable, at best. True, his ideas are solid and any good, insightful work requires effort to understand, but Cavell seems to circle around himself in a rhetorical spiral of namedropping and navel-gazing with an irksome regularity. He frequently explores ill-transitioned tangets with no warning or reason apprent, and the overall read becomes fractured and one is left wondering why. This said, when one can extract the ore of Cavell's reason, it is pure gold. Truly, a mixed bag.
CAVELL'S BEST BOOK.......1998-10-03
THE BOOK IS THE CUMULATIVE RESULT OF CAVELL'S REMARKABLE QUEST TO BRING PHILOSOPHY BACK TO THE HUMANITIES.

from people who knew Johnny Mercer.......2006-07-09
From the dustjacket flaps of the U.S. hardcover edition:
"Moon River," "Blues In The Night," "Laura," "That Old Black Magic" and "Satin Doll" are only a handful from the enormous catalogue of hit songs written by Johnny Mercer. His wit and talent with words made him the peer of Cole Porter, Lorenz Hart, Ira Gershwin and Oscar Hammerstein II, giants in the pantheon of songwriters. Many have compared him with his idol, W.S. Gilbert.
Our Huckleberry Friend is a collection of Mercer's lyrics and memorabilia. It covers Mercer's life from his Savannah, Georgia, childhood through his Hollywood days and the remarkable productive period of the thirties, forties and fifties.
We see the birth of the lively Capitol Records label, and Mercer's association with Nat "King" Cole, Peggy Lee, Betty Hutton, and many others. Mercer went on to win four Academy Awards and to experience the shattering disappointment of several Broadway shows that failed.
It is all here, the successes and the failures, written by Mercer's widow and his close friend Bob Bach. The handsome volume is illustrated with more than a hundred photographs, many from Mrs. Mercer's private albums.
Bob Bach's name became nationally known among television audiences as the producer of the long-running and very successful panel show "What's My Line." He produced other game shows and musical specials featuring such greats as Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton and Mel Torme. Before entering the video field he wrote for Down Beat, Metronome and Billboard magazines.
Ginger Mercer, who was a dancer on the Broadway stage before marrying Johnny Mercer in 1931, is currently [1982] carrying on the traditions of her late husband. She is a member of the council of The American Guild of Authors and Composers and recently formed the Johnny Mercer Foundation for Children.
The Big J As Coffee-table Accessory.......1998-12-03
One day some sage will write a comprehensive biography of Johnny Mercer. Until then we'll have to settle for this tripe. Part coffee-table book, part biography, part social history, part songbook for the karaoke-impaired.... This book pursues all these goals, but really succeeds in none. The lack of focus is disorienting, and all the elements are thereby diluted. Still, it's a nice book to have about the house...along with Fowler and the Communist Manifesto....not entirely uninformative, but simply not truly satisfying. And let's face it, it's the best we'll get for a long time.

A good book but with too many mistakes.......2006-12-09
I have been using a few editions of this book in the last few years and I am going to use it again soon but the 12th edition had too many mistakes. Later I saw the corrections for the mistakes on the book's site but even the corrections had a few mistakes.
Great Book.......2006-08-29
I used this text in my MBA stats class and have found it to be very informative and useful. I found the examples for Excel and Minitab to be well written and of great use. I would recommend this book for anyone who uses statistics on a frequent basis or simply would like a good reference manual in their library.
12th ed. has problems.......2006-05-04
The 12th edition of this book contains a surprising number of errors. I am currently using this book for a statistics course in an MBA program. We are twelve chapters into the book now and in most every chapter I have found a mistake; more often than not there are multiple mistakes. What is worse is that the majority of the mistakes are in the practice problems which are where the student learns to apply the skills. This serves to create confusion and frustration on the student's part. Some of the mistakes are sloppy editing while others more significant are providing wrong information. The editors need to take another look at this book and the authors should also take note.
Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics with CD-Rom.......2005-10-19
The book I received did not have the cd the book was in used condition not good as stated. It was ok. It would have been nice to have the cd. It needs to be a little more detailed.
Good not Great.......2005-09-24
This was an ok buy...first of all it was already quite used and therefore not really worth much.....it was the correct item I ordered and it came in a timely fashion. Overall about 3.5 stars.
