    Book Description

Visualizing Boccaccio represents a new approach to the interpretation of Boccaccio's classic book of erotic tales, The Decameron. In a comparison of selected tales from The Decameron with works by Cimabue and Giotto, fifteenth-century manuscript illumination, a series of paintings by Botticelli, and Pier Paolo Pasolini's cinematic interpretation of the tales, Ricketts demonstrates how the juxtaposition of verbal and visual renditions permits new interpretations of each of these works.

        Book Description

Despite its long eclipse by Parisian couture, Italian fashion is now celebrated globally for the quality of its tailoring, fabric and design. But an Italian label was not always a yardstick for excellence. In the twenty years following the Second World War, a little known fact is that America played a key role in the development of Italy's fashion industry. More generally known is that the Marshall Plan had a formative influence on the financial and industrial reorganization of Italian postwar reconstruction. But America's specific influence on the regeneration of the Italian textile industry has been largely passed over, despite the meteoric rise of design houses such as Max Mara, Gucci and Prada. However, while American interest was central to the industrial and stylistic expansion of Italian fashion, the lessons learned were combined with Italian ideas and energies to create fashions with a distinctly Italian edge. This book reveals that a deliberate effort went into the development of an Italian national identity in fashion design, partially in response to American interest. Drawing on a wide range of sources, notably the testimonies of key witnesses, contemporary media reports and surviving garments, this book contributes to the scant research on twentieth century Italian dress and specifically exposes for the first time the depth of American involvement in Italian fashion in a crucial phase of its development.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful images and serious historical research combined.......2003-04-29

This book will give you a good idea of how the actual fashion *industry* formed in Italy in the course of the 20th century, mainly in the fifty years following WWII. What is so fascinating is to realize the deliberate effort made on various parts to work towards making an industry out of something (looking good) that had always been part of the national character.

        Book Description

Andrew Schwab, lead singer of rock group Project 86, chronicles the highs and lows of life on the road as a Christian band. The spiritual, economic and personal battles highlighted are at times tragic, inspiring or just plain funny. He illuminates many of the issues surrounding bands in the Christian music industry today and pulls no punches when sharing real stories about interacting with celebrities, fans and music industry figures. It's All Downhill From Here leaves the reader with a greater understanding of the role of believers in the arts and pop culture and redefines many of the stereotypes surrounding the idea of "Christian music."

        5 out of 5 stars couldn't put it down.......2007-02-17

This is a great book. I couldn't put it down. It's a good combination of seriousness and humor. Andrew is a phenominal writer. A must for Project 86 fans.

5 out of 5 stars It's All Downhill From Here.......2006-08-04

I bought this for my son(17 years old). He is an Andrew Schwab fan, and he requested it for his birthday. He sat down and read the book so quickly. He was laughing and sighing at the same time.

The book is filled with a humorous but realistic look at the life of a band on the road.

My teenager HIGHLY recommends this for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Project 86: Behind the Music.......2005-02-01

Since Project 86 will probably never enjoy mainstream success, this is the closest any fan will ever come to anything resembling a VH1 Behind the Music special on Project 86.

From satirical (and often amusing) commentary, to hilarious tour stories, to heart-breaking situations, lead singer Andrew Schwab must be admired for his honesty, bluntness, and sincerity.

Uncovering his humanity for all to see, Schwab bears it all...even when it makes him look like less than the perfect Christian. Even while reading the book, I found my attitude toward Schwab wavering from excitement to disappointment to compassion. (Causing a reader to go through such an experience is an ability that only a talented writer possesses.) But in the end, I always came back to the realization that we all have growing to do in regards to our character and our relationships with the LORD.

I would recommend this book to anybody who is an avid fan of Project 86. My only major criticism of the book is that it wasn't edited very carefully...there is a plethora of omitted words that occasionally limits smooth reading.

CONSIDER THIS FAIR WARNING: If you have P86 (and especially Schwab) on a pedestal, you may be slightly shocked by what you read.

        5 out of 5 stars It's All Downhill From Here= Great.......2005-02-01

I found this to honestly be one of the best books that I have ever read. This is a must-have for any Project 86 fafn, or even any Tooth and Nail Record supporter. Andrew shares some of his deepest feelings as well as some of his most inspiring and touching stories he has to offer. You will find yourself unable to put the book down and find yourself wanting to share with Andrew how you feel for him and how much you appriciate what he does. Being a Project 86 fan, reading this made me love the band even that much more. You will most definitely not be disappointed with this one.

        5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SCHWAB!.......2004-12-18

            5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2006-08-27

Ugh, this one is hilarious. The bad boys of magic have a book here that is a little different than your standard "magic" book. Maybe that is why I like it. There are a few great gags that I got from this book that I have utilized around the dinner table. Read this one.

4 out of 5 stars Comic Magicians Talk Lunch.......2006-01-21

Penn and Teller are comic magicians who go back to the 1970s, but did not make it big until their appearances on David Letterman and Saturday Night Live in the 1980s. Since then they have made guest appearances on many television shows including Home Improvement. And recently a cable show has given them their own time slot. Penn and Teller have also written three best-selling books: Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends, How to Play in Traffic, and this book How To Play with Your Food.

Most magicians do not share their secrets. But Penn and Teller love sharing the secrets of magic in a comic way. Some of the topics covered in this book are "Genteel versus vulgar food play"; "Why all miracles are fake"; Stabbing a fork in your eye"; popcorn and pizza tricks; the JFK trick; and many others. My favorite is the "Oliver Stone Melon-Head Trick", which is not for the squeamish. The only caveat is that they did not include the ImpeachBlair vanishing trick, but perhaps they can make the White House lap dog disappear?

4 out of 5 stars a useful book on magic and table manners.......1999-12-04

Penn & Teller take their stage personas to the print medium, and it works superbly. Penn is just as loud as ever, and Teller (seen in many of the photos) wears his trademark blank smile.

Most books on magic and ``tricks'' tend to be frustratingly dull, but the lively prose, scrumptious humour and fine photos and illustration make this one a pleasure to read.

This magic book also has the virtue of presenting several tricks that are easy to perform--if you want to learn two or three very funny and fun tricks table gags that require almost zero practice, this is the book to get.

5 out of 5 stars sick, twisted, and absolutely hilarious.......1999-05-19

everybody loves humor, everybody loves food, and, well, there are creeps who don't like penn & teller, but this if one of the funniest things i've ever read, i learned every trick in the book and life is neeeeeever boring. the two best parts, in my opinion: teller's bit on the great egg drop and penn's story of a milkshake as self-defense. worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars the best thing since pepperoni pizza.......1998-12-14

Got this book a couple of years ago, and spent a weekend trying NOT to die laughing reading it! Some of the tricks in here were absolutely wonderful. I'll never look at jello molds the same way again!

If you love Penn and Teller, this is a great way to curl up and enjoy the literary wonders of these 2 genious masterminds at work. Pretty much this book tells you how to have fun with some magic tricks involving food, and how to perform them, and set them up. Personally my favorite story in the book, not a trick, is about Penn and the Milkshake. You'll have to get the book to know what I am talking about but the whole book is great. I would also suggest you get the other 2 books they have out too. Cruel tricks for dear friends, and How to play in traffic. Great stuff.

                      Book Description

A spirited collection of profiles, reporting, and commentary spanning the cultural scene by one of the finest essayists writing today.

From Frank Sinatra to Sun Ra, from the jazz age to middle age, with thoughts on everything in-between, Francis Davis has been writing about American music and American culture for more than twenty years. His essays have appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, and the Village Voice among countless other publications from coast to coast. And now, for the first time, here are his most important writings of his impressive career--the quintessential Davis on everything from why Rent set musicals back two decades, to what Ken Burns should have filmed. And Davis's writing is as enjoyable as the music of which he writes. The New York Times Book Review has compared Davis's work to "a well-blown solo."

                      5 out of 5 stars A Real Gem.......2005-03-19

This collection of portraits of jazz artists both famous and obscure as well as some commentary regarding music, movies and even Seinfeld is a treasure chest of wonderful insights and anecdotal material. I found myself paging through and reading selections at random and thoroughly enjoying every minute spent with this book. Francis Davis really appreciates jazz and his writing is reflective of his love of the music and his respect for the men and women who create it.

When I was in Elementary School studying chess from grades 3-6) I learned from "Chess For Juniors" as my text book (probably the best and most easy book to learn from for a 9 to 13 year old). However, for a higher reading level I found this book to be an equal if not a better book for an 8th or 9th grader (not to put "Chess for Juniors" down (it is certainly better for your average elementeary, and early middle school reader and has everything needed for the non-high school player), but "Learn Chess" is like what I like, A college text book, like my older brothers in college use. Simple suggesting, NO BETTER BOOK FOR AGE 16+ reading level is this one, LEARN CHESS, under that "Chess for Juniors". Get Started in Chess these books are the best!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A first rate book to learn all the basics!.......2006-09-16

"Learn Chess" is a great place to start if you are either someone who doesn't know the difference between a Horse and a Knight or what the "en passant rule" is. It is also good if you know a little about chess but what formal instruction. This is not a small kiddie book! It is written as if it was like a book to be used in a high school chess class (about the right level).
"Learn Chess" is very clear and goes way beyond the starting rules by covering strategy that will take you to an intermedate player! You get a lot of material that is well organized. If you are looking for a book for an elementary school kid you might consider a lower reading level and more simple presentatiion with "chess, a complete guide for the beginner" that is written for the young reader. Once you finish "Learn Chess" you will be ready for books on tactics, traps, openings, endgames and complete game collections!

5 out of 5 stars Efficient and tremendously clear.......2003-09-25

A classic: the best A-to-Z course in chess I've ever seen; ideal for teaching smart kids to play. It's very, very efficient, which means that it can cover everything from the basics to more complicated material in just 170 pages. The elegance of the presentation makes its points easy to hold in your head when you're playing.

The real glory of this book is the middle sections: the chapters on double attack, forks, pins and skewers, and the like are great. It's easy to explain the basics of chess and some of the advanced student subjects like openings; but the middle game subjects can be hard to explain logically (rather than through endless examples). This book does a great job of that.

The same text used to come in two very attractively bound slim volumes.

5 out of 5 stars All the basics in one book.......2003-03-01

This is a very good book on the basics of chess. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to learn to play chess, or who already knows but would like to improve.

This book was originally published in 2 volumes. Now they have been combined into one. Volume explains the rules, and the most basic info about the opening, ending, and how one wins a chess game.

Volume 2 covers the most useful ways to win material (pins, skewers, forks). There follows a chapter on mating attacks. Then there is more info about openings and endings. The last couple of chapters give some general advice and points the reader to other sources of chess information.

Each chapter has exercises. Some of them are simple, others challenging. Don't be discouraged if you can't work them all. My advice is to do every exercise. Write down your answers before looking at the solution. If possible, work the exercises without using a set and board in order to develop the ability to look ahead. I enjoyed working the exercises. They illustrate the lessons, and some of them challenge you to think a little deeper.

The Alburt and Pelts books are also very good. Learn Chess could be used before, after, or along with the A&P books to get a couple of views of the same information.

Es un grandioso libro que explica muy bien, y de forma muy sencilla, los principales topicos del juego de ajedrez. Es un libro excelente para principiantes.

                      Book Description

The best-selling guide to leadership development-fully revised, updated, and expanded for a new generation of leaders.

Over their distinguished careers, Warren Bennis and Joan Goldsmith have demonstrated how leaders are made, not born. In today's environment of crisis and uncertainty, the ability to develop leaders is arguably the most pressing concern, whether the arena is business, politics, education, health care, the environment, or the arts. Integrating wisdom from the world's most insightful and accomplished leaders, self-assessments, and dozens of interactive skill-building exercises, Learning to Lead reveals the underpinnings of true leadership. It shows you how to see beyond leadership myths, translate failures into springboards for renewed creativity, and communicate your vision for yourself, your team, or your organization.

This new edition has been updated throughout, including bibliography and references, and contains substantive new material that reflects the authors' ongoing research on collaborative leadership, ethics, integrity, and personal development.

5 out of 5 stars From the old Masters.......2007-03-08

I particularly enjoyed the simple, yet subtle style how the book is written. Only when a real Master such as Warren Bennis does that, it brings home the message intended. I consider this a valuable read not only fr those that wish to become better leaders but also for those that are working in the field of management development. Here is another proof, that valuable training has often more to do with depth than with the complexity of the materials you present.

2 out of 5 stars A few good bits but mainly platitudes and banalities.......2004-08-17

Trouble first appeared on the front cover. A silver haired gentleman staring resolutely into the future. My next door neighbour on the train commented "he looks like a pompous ....head".

This was at it turned out. While it is actually quite short it seemed long because there was little that is not commonplace. I nearly fell asleep reading acres of mind numbing statements of the obvious.

Give it a miss, there is much better out there.
