5 out of 5 stars Just Beautiful.......2005-04-08

Tom Tierney's "Vivien Leigh Paper Dolls in Full Color" recreates all the highlights of this beautiful woman's long career. Fans of "Gone With the Wind" will love the costumes from this film (8 in total, but it's a pity that the ruffled white gown from the first scene is not one of them). Other excellent illustrations feature costumes from "Waterloo Bridge", "Caesar and Cleopatra", "Anna Karenina" and "A Streetcar Named Desire".
The style of illustration is classic early Tierney, with bold use of colour and superb line work. The doll closely resembles the more mature Vivien Leigh.
The plates in this book are worthy of framing!

4 out of 5 stars Where is the Red Dress?.......2005-02-27

Where is that infamous red dress from Gone with the Wind. I looked from the front to the back, thinking that I had missed it to the back to front. Kudos to adding outfits from obscure movies like A Yank at Oxford, but that adds more to the question, "Where is the red dress?"

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Vivien Leigh Fans!.......2001-10-14

I am a HUGE fan of Vivien Leigh who collects her films and biographies. This was a terrific addition to my collection. The dolls and outfits are beautifully drawn, and capture various film roles including Gone with the Wind. There are even outfits in the book from never-before-released-on-video The Deep Blue Sea. Since many of her films were in black and white, it is interesting to see outfits from those films colorized. ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars Vivien Leigh is hard to capture in image..........2000-08-25

I love paper dolls and always have! I found this book to be wonderful. I think Vivien Leigh's beauty is hard to capture exactly, though, and I've seen some terrible images of her in other books. But, all in all, this book is a winner! I just wish the creator would become familiar with another incredibly beautiful and talented young lady by the name of Natalia Melony , and create a paper doll of her! I think if she had been born back then, she would have given Vivien some real competition for the role of Scarlett! Paper doll lovers, I don't think you can go wrong purchasing this. And if you are a Gone With The Wind buff, you will treasure it for your collection. By the way, I was named after one of Scarlett's sisters! - Careen O'Brian

4 out of 5 stars A must for Leigh fans.......2000-01-06

This is the first of Tom Tierney's paper doll books I bought--probably a decade and a half ago!--and I've become a big fan of his paper dolls in general for their beauty and accuracy. Unlike many of his later paper dolls (Garbo, Joan Crawford, etc.) the Vivien Leigh book contains only one "doll," and the likeness, while good, doesn't quite capture her incredible beauty. (Do, however, note the brunette doll in his Southern Belle paper doll book, who is a dead ringer for Leigh--perhaps Tierney decided to have another go?) This book contains many costumes from _Gone with the Wind_--the green-sprigged dress, green velvet "drapery" dress, scandalous red dress, and mourning dress from the Atlanta bazaar sequence among them. There are also plenty of beautiful costumes from many of VL's other movies (including two from Waterloo Bridge and two from Streetcar). The color in some editions is a little washed-out (I have gone through several copies over the years!) but fans of Vivien Leigh and GWTW should really enjoy this. I only wish it could have contained _all_ VL's costumes from GWTW.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars If Edward Gorey was A.A. Milne's editor..........2003-10-02

An instant classic, Tony Millionaire's collection of Sock Monkey comics is ideal for adults who have not become too sensible and for children who are too good for the usual antiseptic, focus-group oriented fare that passes as children's entertainment these days.

Do you remember John Bellairs' 'The House with a Clock in it's Walls'? Imagine that atmosphere meshed with pre-Disney Winnie the Pooh, with touches of 'The Wind in the Willows' in the dialogue. Filter that through an Edward Gorey illustrative sensibility (although Tony Millionaire is the better artist) and you have a good idea of what to expect here. Except it's also a comic book and its funny.

Buy this book for your children. It will delight them and scare them a little bit, which I assure you builds character.

5 out of 5 stars It all ends in flames.......2003-09-24

Falling somewhere between graphic novel and comic book, this is some of the best art and cool weirdness I've seen in a long time. The story is the least of it; like most of Mr. Millionaire's work, it all ends in mayhem. The exquisite artwork, with its vintage look and dense and imaginative attention to detail, along with the quaint dialogue makes this a cult classic. Great fun!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but too dark for kids.......2003-05-06

This book is too dark and violent for young kids, but grownups will appreciate the nostalgic and melancholy, yet sometimes silly, stories. The drawings are exquisite. An unusual work of art.

5 out of 5 stars Gadzooks! Sock Monkey is here!.......2001-12-14

This book is a collection of stories from Tony Millionaire's astounding comic book Sock Monkey. Disturbing, hilarious, and lovingly rendered in antiquey black and white are your favorite sock monkey, Uncle Gabby, and his oft drunken pal Mr. Crow. Together they "traipse the constellated wildreness" of a chandelier, attempt to return a shrunken head to it's home in "The Borneo," burn down the house, and much more. The illustrations are painstakingly realistic and quite beautiful, while the stories are charming, touching and surreal. Uncle Gabby and Mr Crow speak like refined 19th century gentlemen (quite quotable) and occaisionally come to existential revelations. Reads like an obscure 110-year old publication.

This is the next best thing in comic literature. If you like underground comix this is a must-read. Appropriate for kids, though there is some violence (you could say the same for The Brothers Grimm).

5 out of 5 stars An Extravaganza Of Merry Mayhem.......2000-09-17

This book is a compilation of the four "Sock Monkey" comic books. I am not a true comic book afficianado, but really enjoyed this unusual book. The illustrations are superbly executed, and the stories are truly unique. Throughout the tales runs an underlying theme ....that catastrophes can result from unsolicited attempts to 'fix' the problems of others. The humor is a bit grim but spirited, the characters beyond unique. An added treat are the single page pieces at the end of each story..as entertaining as the stories themselves: "Daddy Long Legs Went on a cruise, He drank some booze, Got hit by a squall 'But I'm so small The sharks aren't Eating me at all' He was eaten by a sardine"

Few comics can match the cross-generational appeal of Bill Cosby--and even fewer can top the Jell-O man when it comes to his effortless rapport with the wee ones. First with Fat Albert and Junior Barnes, and later with the little Huxtables, "Cos" has always had a knack for getting kids to say... well, the darndest things. Perhaps he puts it best: "When talking to kids, you've got to pretend that you don't know much--and a few seconds later, you realize you're not pretending."

Who better than Bill Cosby, then, to host Kids Say the Darndest Things, a cute-kid TV show in the spirit of Art Linkletter's House Party. This slim book collects Cosby's (and Linkletter's) most brilliant, wonderful conversations on the program, interspersed with trademark Cosby comic patter. Sections include religion ("Do you know what happened to Adam and Eve?" "They ate the apple and went to hell and their parents went to Los Angeles."); family life ("I want my lunch." "Well, how do you ask for it?" "Like this: I want my lunch."); sex ("As for birth control, I'm against it for humans but for it against insects."); and history ("Who was Paul Revere?" "False."). --Paul Hughes

    Book Description

Bill Cosby is classically funny. Now, as the star of CBS-TV's "Bill Cosby's Kids Say the Darndest Things" he again has the perfect platform to bring out the best in all people through the hilariously honest, witty and touching statements of all kinds of children. Now, this sure-fire combination will take to the printed page in the must-have book of the season.

5 out of 5 stars Blast from the past.......2007-08-18

This book was the first laugh out loud book I ever read. I was 12 years old and found the book on my grandparents coffee table. I have read it at least every couple years since then. Art Linkletter did a very good job capturing what is in the minds of children. The things they say are by turns hilarious and thought provoking. Children perceive the world with new and unjaded eyes and the way they process information is very unique!

My copy or rather my grandparents copy is very tattered and falling apart. I was so excited to be able to purchase a new copy. My children are grown now and I have shared this book with them. My husband and I just laugh over the anecdotes in this book. We quote them to each other quite often. We just reread the book out loud to each other and often we would have tears rolling down our faces from laughing so hard. It also would remind us of some of the funny things our own kids would say when they were growing up. Overall I would say this is just a fun book that will brighten your day. It is admittedly silly, but couldn't we all use a little laughter in our day?

    5 out of 5 stars Charming.......2007-01-04

This is the first book by Art Linkletter that I've ever read. It won't be the last. The "Kids" are the stars, of course. The stories are charming and such a pleasure to read. I didn't want to put the book down.

5 out of 5 stars It is one of the funniest books I have ever read........1998-07-11

when I was 10 years old, I found this gem in a large pile of books at my Grandma's house. I laughed out loud when I first read this book, and each time since. It is hilarious.

                    Book Description

Published to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Erich Maria Remarque this is an account of the making of his novel. When published in 1928, the book transformed the popular image of war; the film, directed by Lewis Milestone, was released the following year and was instantly acclaimed a classic. It remains the quintessential view of World War I and of the brutality and waste of war. Like the novel the film was censored. Andrew Kelly covers the film's origins and production, and its fortunes on and after release. It is illustrated with scenes from the film and contains extensive extracts from the screenplays.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding story of a great book and film.......2006-05-14

Author Andrew Kelly is a fan of ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT by Eric Martia Remarque, and he has documented the entire story of the writing of the book, the making of the film, and the impact the film had on the world.

It is hard to imaging how audiences received this film in 1930. It was probably the most violent movie made up to that time. There are so many incredible scenes, like the invasion of rats in the dugout, or the old men arguing about why Germany has not won the war -- while Paul (Lew Ayres) silently slips away. One funny but sad scene is at the mess pot where half of their company has died that day, so the soldiers rejoice when they get twice the normal amount of beans to eat!

This was a risky big film for Universal, because the Great Depression had already started. But director Lewis Milestone used moving cameras and inventively used sound. They assembled a great cast for the film, including Ayres, Louis Wolheim, Slim Summerville, and Raymond Griffith

The book tells the story of reissues of the film, where censors made alterations to the film. The most shocking part of the book concerns the Nazi's banning of the film, after first sabotaging a screening of the film in Germany.

This book is a must-read for fans of the book and the film.

This has got to be the cutest deck ever! It is a Rider-Waite variation and has been created mainly for beginners. Colorful, light-hearted and whimsical, this deck is really small (2.5 - 3 inches) and looks like it has been drawn by children.

There is no real traditional African art on these cards, but there is the flair of an African village in all scenes, and the faces of the people are black.

If you like light-hearted and fun decks, this will probably become a favorite for you.

I loved the cards. The cards fit in the palm of yr hand and with the high glossy finish were very easy to shuffle and manage. One of the best I've purchased so far for ease of handling. Cute african artistry for collectors of decks.

5 out of 5 stars These beautiful cards were a great starting point for me!.......2006-05-18

I was drawn to this deck of cards long before I ever bought them! Big mistake in taking so long to get them because once I did get them, I loved using them! I was drawn to them because of the cartoonish and really cute images and the beautiful colors and scenes depicted in these cards.

I grew up under strict religious beliefs, and it took me a while to come to terms with my fascination and interest in tarot cards. This deck felt very non-threatening to me, and helped me to familiarize myself with the tarot. It was just a good starting point for me.

The sub-title to these cards: "Journey into the Self" -was also appealing to me, because I didn't feel like I was using the cards for taboos like fortune telling, or spell casting. -I was trying to find out more about myself and the world I live in.

I really like the LWB that comes with the cards. For such a small book, it was extremely helpful and I liked the interpretations. The box is a really cute corregated cardboard.

The images are based on the Rider-Waite-Smith deck in that the pictures are so similar. The RWS deck is far more detailed and true to life pictures whereas these are more cartoonish type.

I'd highly recommend this deck. Choosing a deck, especially your first one, is a personal choice and you need to go with one that you have good feelings about and feel comfortable with. If you want to see the whole deck, you can view it at the tarot.com website.

A lot of people may be put off by the idea of an "African Tarot Deck," thinking that it must involve voudou, arcane tribal symbolism, or just be for black people. Well, I'm a black woman who has shown this deck to white friends -- this deck is completely accessible.

The "African Tarot: Journey into the Self" is a teeny little deck based on Rider-Waite symbology. It also looks like it was drawn by a child with talent -- the sort of art that you'd *want* to put on your fridge. The people are brown and have kinky hair, and they live in an African village -- after that, and a few liberties with the suit cards -- it's a standard deck.

The suits, by the way, are traditionally named. However, the art shows Swords as spears, Cups as gourds and Pentacles as coins or disks. The art is rich and perhaps a tad dark for some, perhaps it's best not to read this one in low light -- but then, it's far from a gothic deck. The back design is equally darling -- two colorful tortoises in the sun, reversed from each other so you can see one of them upright as long as you're holding the card lengthwise. According to the South African author, the Shangaan culture considers this animal a symbol of "the slow coming of justice" -- appropraite enough considering its country of origin.

The cards are approximately 3" x 2.5" and covered with what I assume is a standard, slick coating. This makes them easy to shuffle, but I have a habit of dropping some cards if I'm just going through them while holding them in my hands.

I even find the package a total keeper: a brown, corregated cardboard box with descriptive cards glued to the back and front. A rubberband to keep the box closed and you could probably drop this deck into your backpack and only have the box take damage. However, the box is so cute, why would you want to?

The little booklet inside confirms the image that this is a feel-good deck -- many of the interpretations are positive or at least encouraging of growth. So, while this isn't an all-ocassion deck, I certainly think it's worth a look!

                              Book Description

Over the last decade, the number of services that can be outsourced has grown exponentially. Yet research suggests that 50 percent of outsourcing contracts signed during the last three years will fail to meet expectations. Gartner sourcing experts Linda Cohen, Denise Underwood, and Allie Young argue that this is because most organizations are utilizing ad-hoc approaches to outsourcing that are both short-sighted and ineffective. Based on extensive, multiyear research, this book unveils a new operational model—multisourcing—that seamlessly blends internally and externally delivered services not just to cut costs or gain efficiencies, but to maximize growth, agility, and bottom-line results. Through practical frameworks and illustrative company examples, the authors guide managers in creating a customized plan for managed multisourcing, including how to: assess their current sourcing strategy, strike the right types of sourcing deals, set up effective governance systems, select and evaluate service providers, and measure progress. A new approach to a timely business issue from leading experts in the field, Multisourcing presents a roadmap managers can follow to position their firms as tomorrow’s industry leaders.

                              5 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2005-11-28

I was excited to see this book come out and am sad to see unmerited poor reviews. This book is filled with practical examples and is well written. The book is definately worth the $ and will be a useful reference for those interested in multisourcing.

2 out of 5 stars Book is a Mixed Bag .......2005-11-28

I agree this book is a very mixed bag...no 5 star winner or 1 star loser.

However, I found the outsourcing information pretty commonplace and the case studies more like industry journal sidebars. The hang up may be that the authors try to convey in consultant format(i.e., sales brochure) what the other outsourcing books did in just as well in practical terms.

5 out of 5 stars Strange reviews -- Very practical book.......2005-11-25

Not sure where some of these other reviewers are coming from. Basically the entire book is composed of frameworks, decision models, examples (from well-known companies like DuPont and Nike), etc. that can be lifted directly from the book and put into practice right away. This is by far the best outsourcing book I've seen (and I've seen a lot).

I wouldn't necessarily have given it 5 stars if these other reviewers weren't slamming it with ludicrous criticism but this is at least a 4 star book. (You might also note that the only people using "real names" are giving positive reviews)
