Book Description
The passion and talent of African American painter Alma Woodsey Thomas (1891-1978) shines through each of the full-color reproductions in this elegant book, the first comprehensive text published on Thomas's life and work in over fifteen years. A gifted and dedicated artist whose life spanned vast social and political changes, Thomas steadfastly forged her path without regard to political or social expectations from the art world. In 1924 she became the first graduate of Howard University's newly organized art department, and in 1972 she became the first African American woman to hold a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. This is the exhibition catalog for the show organized by the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, scheduled to travel to several American museums through January 2000.

Book Description
Featured are hats, purses, hankies, gloves, fans, parasols, hosiery, shoes, aprons, and capes. This book is a compelling photo study of the styles for each era - Victorian, Edwardian, Roaring Twenties, Depression, WWII, Fabulous Fifties, and Modern - and identification and value guide for collectors of vintage fashion. 2003 values. REVIEW: This book covers the accessories that women have used over the past 150 years, some pieces dating back even earlier to 1820, like a parasol from the Jackson-Decatur debates. A glimpse into the closets and trunks of the author, a private collector for over 30 years, reveals many parts of ensembles of ladies from the past.
Customer Reviews:
If you like Vintage then get this book.......2002-08-18
This book was put together very well, there is so much to see and the pictures are all nice and clear.
A Generous Sharing.......2001-07-29
This book is the generous sharing of Ms.Johnson's passion of 25 years - the collecting of vintage clothing and accessories. With overviews of all of a woman's favorite accessories, the book can easily serve as a basic primer for those with a new-found interest in vintage pieces. The information on documentation, age determination, and worth accessment is both helpful and inspirational. The numerous close-up photos of a wide variety of accessories, along with drawings, illustrations, and ads from old periodicals will delight both new and experienced collectors, as well as those simply interested in the past - for fashion, as always, tells us much about culture. Ladies' Vintage Accessories is written in a personable style and is full of both information and food for thought. Highly Recommended.
An OK anthology of pictures of vintage accessories.......2001-06-28
This book follows the current trend in vintage clothing books, in that it consists of photos of items belonging to one collector, presented as an identification and price guide. There are brief captions and a little explanatory text. The author has photographed her items flat or on stands, thus avoiding the jarring effect created in some other books by the use of very modern-looking live models. Most of the items represent everyday, easily purchasable vintage accessories rather than spectacular or rare collectibles. There are also many black-and-white period advertising pictures, possibly to atone for the relatively small number of pre-1900 items photographed from the collection. The prices (unfortunately!) seem low for the current market, and I found no indication of how they were derived. Unlike some other books, most of the time the author avoids gushing about her collection. However, she does follow the current trend of giving comparatively little practical information on how to restore and use vintage accessories (which many collectors want to do), on the grounds that they are "too precious." In fact, most of the items pictured in her book could be worn and enjoyed without much risk of damage.
Outstanding reference book.......2001-05-20
LaRee Johnson-Burton's book, Ladies Vintage Accessories, is outstanding. The photographs were stunning, and the information imparted about the value and description of the collection was exceedingly valuable. Quite frankly, I feel this book is a must-have, not only for the serious collector of vintage accessories and garments, but for writers of historical fiction, who can use this guide to bring them back in time and make certain that their characters are properly adorned. From cobalt blue Victorian parasols to 1920 gold mesh bags, this is a valuable and beautiful crafted book, packaged impeccably by Collector Books, and written by an author/collector who is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about her field. --Karen Plunkett-Powell, author, Remembering Woolworth's
Covers hats, purses, shoes, aprons, shawls and more.......2001-04-29
LaRee Johnson Bruton's Ladies' Vintage Accessories ...covers hats, purses, shoes, aprons, shawls and all kinds of vintage accessories, with full-color photos alongside the latest prices. The history is as involving as the color photos of spoons paired with their values.

Mommas can be movie stars too!.......2002-04-29
I love Rose is Rose, and this collection of strips has given me no reason to think otherwise. For the humorous looks at life you've come to expect from Rose and her family, (and Peekaboo, too!), get this. :) I couldn't stop laughing, and I had to read the whole book in one sitting!
Hilarious Story of a Mother and her Alter Ego.......2002-02-17
I always know when my husband is reading this because i can hear him laughing from the other end of the house! These are really cute and I recommend them to all my friends and family members.
Excellent comic if a little sappy.......2002-02-02
This is a collection of Rose Is Rose comic strips, one of the few decent ones not to appear in the Washington Post (along with Foxtrot and maybe Funky Winkerbean). They're a bit sappy at times: son Pasquale has a helpful guardian angel and is too good to be believed. On the other hand, the artwork is excellent and some of the ideas superb. Rose, the mother, has recurring fantasies of being a biker babe, which are brought out at odd moments. Dad is a great tease, at one point getting onto his knees with his shoes under them and telling Pasquale that he got that way because he didn't eat his vegetables. Certainly very entertaining.
Sweet, sincere, artistically incredible........2000-12-28
I grew up with "talking heads" type comics. I can burn through the Sunday funnies in about a minute-and-a-half just reading the text and, truthfully, this is what I =did= do for many years because it was rare to find anything really interesting to look at. But when "Calvin and Hobbes" came around, and Berke Breathed transmogrified "Bloom County" into "Outland", I started to stop and look at what could be done in what I had formerly considered a fairly seriously limited medium.
Around 1992, I started a subscription to a local paper which carried "Rose is Rose" and I immediately recognized the same kind of wondrous artistic talent in Pat Brady that I had seen in Breathed and Waterston. Even more so, since the author didn't have the clout of these other two, he had to cram this creativity into the formats and patterns dictated by the newspaper nazis (who want to make sure there's plenty of room for those Sizzler's coupons).
The subject matter of the strip isn't for everyone. It's a sincere, sweet look at a happy family. The humor in the strip doesn't generally derive from strife or even serious friction, but from the characters' expressions of imagination, and even the creative manner in which they get along. The fact that this works without being cloying, in a millenium ushered in by the Simpsons and South Park, is a testament to the truth behind the art.
Loved it!.......1998-05-26
If you love "Rose is Rose" especially Jimbo and Rose's relationship and/or Peekaboo the cat, you need this book.

He's Back!!!.......2003-03-15
Hilarious reviews of B-Movies done in Joe Bob's initimable style - guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.
Not for the sexually repressed (he often rates movies by the number of "boobs" that are visible), this series of reviews from the Movie Channel's "Drive In Theatre" host's syndicated newspaper column preaches the Drive-In gospel.
Actually, the author is a very sharp man who realized the way to get maximum attention was to adopt a beer guzzling, trailer park living Good Ol' Boy White Trash persona.
The funniest film reviews I've ever read - get this and his first book of reviews "Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In" (what/where else?!)
JOE BOB'S TRIUMPHANT RETURN!.......2000-08-06
Joe Bob's second (to date) collection of drive-in movie reviews is equally as funny as his first. He picks up from the infamous "We Are the Weird" column, which got him tossed off the Dallas Slimes-Herald and out of the El Lay Slimes Syndicate, then goes into his next weekly column (he was picked up by Universal Press Syndicate without ever missing a column). The reviews are often far more entertaining than the films, and his hilarious slice-o'-life segments are some of the best humor pieces out there. This one's a real winner for drive-in fans and people who just like to LAUGH alike!
HILARIOUS.......2000-03-28
Joe Bob Briggs is an awesome character. His reviews of "B" movies are usually dead-on accurate and to the point. (He is the only critic next to Ebert that isn't ashamed to like so-called "trashy" flicks. Ths collection of reviews from his newspaper columns is a must read for fans of good ol' drive-in type movies. It also contains Briggs' hysterical monologues on life in Grapevine, TX , as well as his opinions on life.

The Art Of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos
ASIN: 078642091X |
Book Description
Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born late in the 19th century, but it was not until after his death in 1937 that he became a worldwide icon of horror and supernatural fiction. Influenced largely by Lord Dunsany and Edgar Allan Poe, Lovecraft's stories are known for their unique assimilation of gothic themes into science fiction. Lovecraft's influence has stretched far beyond literary horror, as a number of his works have been adapted for feature films, television episodes, comic book tales and, in recent years, video games.
This scholarly study highlights Lovecraft's profound impact on 20th century popular culture. Early chapters introduce his complete writings, providing an annotated bibliography of the author's horror and science fiction tales. The works are discussed in the context of the Cthulhu Mythos, an invented mythology centering on ancient and alien beings interacting with the terrestrial world. Later chapters provide a filmography of motion pictures that credit Lovecraft or are identifiably adapted from his works, as well as a discussion of the works that have been adapted for television, comic books, role-playing video games, and music. The book concludes with a close examination of the Lovecraft legacy, commenting on his specific social and metaphysical ideologies and placing the author in context among such notable literary personalities as Mary Shelley, Nathanial Hawthorne, and Robert Louis Stevenson.

H.P. Lovecraft In Popular Culture is a survey and critique of pop culture phenomena derived from the horror stories and mythos of author H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft was especially well-known for creating inhuman fiends such as Great Cthullu that slept for eons and periodically awoke to torture and enslave humanity; his vision of a merciless universe and the near-omnipotent, diabolically cruel entities that ruled it has provided inspiration for role-playing games, television shows, comic books, movies, varieties of music, and more. Numerous individual pop culture works are succinctly summarized and critiqued, in this handy, easy-to-use reference for casual Lovecraft fans and serious literature students alike.

This guitar workshop is a powerful learning tool that will help extend your stockpile of licks and fills and help develop your improvisational skills. The play-along songs (in standard notation and tab, and on the CD with and without guitar parts) are: Black Magic Woman Samba Pa Ti She's Not There The Healer Oye Como Va Europa Evil Ways Persuasion.
Customer Reviews:
Jam with Carlos Santana with CD .......2007-05-12
The CD & book are very good to play along with, also the chords & notes are right in the book, only one thing they dont tell you, they are not the entire songs. Europa, Black Magic Woman, etc are all cut short & dont play through the guitar solos, so there are several minutes cut out of each song, so its not the entire song. If you dont care about the solos its fine, but this says its a jam, to me soloing is the best part of the jam & they are all cut out
Good stuff! Useful and fun!.......2004-03-26
If you like Santana music and have decent guitar skills, you will appreciate this book. First of all, a recommendation that applies to all the books with sheet music and tablature: the reader/player should be able to read AT LEAST the rhythmic info on the paper in order to take more advantage of the product. That is, one should understand when it is a quarter or eighth or sixteenth note, if it is on the down or up beat, when it is staccato or not. You can use the tablature for getting the "note", but try to be disciplined on the rhythmic front. And play slowly, with a metronome, before jumping to the performance tempo of the jam tracks. Believe me, it adds so much to your rhythmic performance. At least for me, certain passages are rhythmically challenging so for the time being I am inserting licks that I control while trying to keep the "key notes" of the solo there. Hey, that is a good exercise in improvisation!
I have not "jammed" with the CD yet but I've been playing the licks with special concern to timing. My opinion is that almost anyone will benefit from this book at multiple levels: the book might serve as a beautiful introduction to the syncopated cha cha rhythm by playing "Oye como va". It also offers busy rhythm comping with "Evil Ways" and "Persuasion". And for the soloists, of course a guitar student will be able to appreciate the soulful, bluesy phrasing of Santana ("BlackMagic Woman", "Europa")and hopefully become able to add some of Santana's magic to his or her own style. Finally, kudos for the authors for having included "The Healer", an overlooked gem of Santana (the intro is as good an exercise in playing both with a pick and the fingers as any other).
There is one thing that I miss: I think the author could have included an intro on the book highlghying a few of the "trademark" Santana licks and techniques so you can practive in a more structured way instead of jumping directly into the tracks. Also, more rhythmic information for comping (e.g. the author mensions the "bossa nova feel" of BlackMagic Woman but does not show it on paper) would be welcome. But hey, I am very pleased with the purchase and I intend to buy more books of the "jam with" series.
Play till your fingers fall off! This is a blast!.......2003-02-08
I picked this up for working on my timing and feel, this is VERY well done, well ok ... the 2nd pack of tracks with actual guitar parts is, so so. I've spent hours just on Tracks '2' and '4' and I have to say this is the most fun I've had playing with out a real band around. You can work on your tone, timing, feel, get inventive, play it note for note and do not need to have other musicians going over and over it with you.
I'd also recommend the Dire Straits version but it's much harder to play along with. I will be buying more in this series for sure!
Dream come true for learning guitarists and Santana fanatics.......2000-05-02
Santana has always been my ultimate guitarist idol, and for a book like this to come out, I feel like I've actually had a workshop with Santana himself. It provides a number of easy to interpret tips and recommendations that have not only increased my confidence in improvisation, but also have allowed me to imagine during the play-alongs that I may one day meet a level of playing like Carlos'. My guitar techniques have without a doubt undergone significant improvements. This book includes all the classics, and is a must for any of the other Santana fanatics like me.

In the eons since then, the two sisters have existed in total enmity.
Now a great power has hatched a mad scheme to re-create the goddess Tyche by reuniting Tymora and Beshaba, regardless of the potentially calamitous consequences.

Customer Reviews:
An enjoyable read.......2005-10-03
When I purchased this book I didn't realize that it was part of a series, so I will have to go back and read the other two. Still, I found the book interesting and entertaining. A previous review stated that the gods were infantile, but when compared to the antics of the Greek and Roman gods, it's no different. Also, since I have just finished the Shadowdale trilogy and started the Avatar trilogy, I was intrigued to get a little more understanding of the various planes and realms the gods inhabit and a hint of the vastness of the "multiverse". This book is written a lot different than the others I have read from the Forgotten Realms, adding to its charm (probably why I enjoyed "The Night Parade", too). If you're looking for something a little different, then this book might be for you.
A good read.........1999-02-14
What can I say, it's a good story.. Especially in the creation of the boundaries of what each god from another sphere may do. As for Lathandar's foolishness.. *smile* Some folks never learn, I'd like to refer to the Avatar series and Crucible as further proof.
A good book.......1998-09-29
This book gives some useful information about the planes to those who don't want to buy the Planescape products. The characters weren't so good as in the Finder's Stone Trilogy but I still enjoyed this book.I recommend this to those interested in the planes.
One of Novak and Grubb's best!.......1998-09-08
My only complaint would be the fact that the plot rests on Lathander being far stupider than is likely. Besides that, this is excellent stuff.
Disappointing.......1998-09-06
When I bought Tymora's Luck I was terribly disappointed. The truth is, I had to look for something I DID like. Now, I love TSR books and wish the company well, but this book is terrible. The plot is laughable, the gods are infantile in behavior and hardly worth reading about let alone worshipping. Pass it up.....

Clear and welcome tools for justifying marketing investment.......2006-10-18
Calculating the ROI for marketing expenditures has long been a challenge. In the absence of financial justification, marketing budgets are often cut by companies unwilling or unable to show a clear relationship between such expenses and the bottom line. Naturally, then, it is in the best interest of marketing and corporate leadership to determine marketing ROI. After all, the value of attracting and keeping long-term customers is significant. By identifying the steps to determine marketing ROI, marketers have the tools to implement stronger marketing campaigns. More effective campaigns lead to greater profitability. Greater profitability creates financial health that allows companies to invest further in creative and productive marketing initiatives. I found that MARKETING ROI offers immediately useful information that helps guide marketing planning, and ties such spending directly to the bottom line.

Introducing Rigor to Marketing Spending.......2003-11-26
With Marketing ROI, Jim Lenskold has introduced a very useful level of financial rigor into what the typically imprecise process of targeting investments in marketing and then measuring their impact on company profits. Two key concepts introduced are how Marketing ROI is correctly calculated (many companies do it wrong), and more importantly, how the Marketing ROI informantion is used to manage marketing investments, looking at the incremental investment in marketing, and its incremental effect on sales and profitablity. Jim covers the subject from a big company perspective, focusing on multi-product, multi-customer segment environments, but the concepts in the book can also be applied to small companies concerned with spending marketing dollars most effectively.
This is a key text to be used along with the latest in customer relationship management techniques and customer information technology to manage the profitability of a company's demand chain.
