The American Century 2-Volume Boxed Set: Art and Culture, 1900-2000

To celebrate the end of the second Common Era millennium, the Whitney Museum of American Art mounted a tremendous nine-month show covering American art from 1900 to 2000. Curator Barbara Haskell takes on the first part of the exhibition in The American Century: Art and Culture, 1900-1950. Included are images from painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, and design, providing a comprehensive overview of artistic and cultural ideas in the first half of the 20th century. Then, Lisa Phillips, a director of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York who previously spent 20 years at the Whitney overseeing many of its famous (or infamous) biennials, addresses 1950 to 2000.Book Description
A slipcased set of the two American Century volumes, published in association with the Whitney Museum of American Art. The American Century is the subject of a year-long exhibition at the Whitney Museum --the most comprehensive display of twentieth-century American art ever assembled, incorporating a wide range of masterpieces from all sections of the country, by both familiar and lesser-known artists.Volume I, covering the first half of the century, is a history of American art as well as a permanent record of the Whitney show. Here fine arts achievements are seen as part of the larger culture that helped shape them --the art forms of film, dance, music, literature, photography, decorative arts, architecture, fashion, and industrial design. All are described and set in the context of political and social currents of the era in Barbara Haskell's rich and informative text. Essays by noted experts in many fields illuminate developments in different areas of artistic endeavor while over 750 full-color and duotone illustrations give visual testimony to America's dominant role in the arts.
Volume II is a compelling panorama of art in America during the second half of this century. Shortly after the Second World War a group of American artists moved away from representation and realism toward a completely nonrepresentational style which became known as abstract expressionism. Led by Jackson Pollock, Willem De Kooning, and others, it was the first truly American painting style, and it quickly moved the United States into the forefront of innovation. A succession of other movements followed, including Pop Art, with adherents like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein; the performance art of John Cage and others; video art, led by Nam Juin Paik; and installation art of grand proportions. In this expansive volume Lisa Phillips explains the excitement and inventiveness of American artists in the context of the varied and sometimes turbulent social environment as well as the expanding economy of postwar America. Essays by experts in related fields illuminate parallel and diverse developments in architecture, dance, music, literature, painting, sculpture, cinema, and design. With over 700 color and duotone illustrations.

Comparative Performances of Seismic Design Codes for Concrete Structures (2-Volume Set)
Manufacturer: Pergamon Press Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 008043021X |
Book Description
Hardbound. The international seminar on Comparative Performances of Seismic Design Codes was the first opportunity for 'The Concrete Committee' of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) to organize an international event to disseminate its own research products and activities world wide. The topic of the seminar was selected following the 1996 publication of 'The Seismic Design Code' by 'The Concrete Committee' of JSCE.
The damages suffered by modern concrete structures during the Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake in 1995 was the principal motivation for these revisions of the code. This presented an opportunity to try to compare the performance of the revised code with those of existing major seismic design codes in the world, i.e., CALTRANS Code, EURO Code 8, NEW ZEALAND Code.
Due to the unique seminar format, Volume 1 of the proceedings introduced explanatory notes for the four codes. In addition, the four codes were applied to the compa

Patterns and Poetry: No Robes from the Lucy Truman Aldrich Collection at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design
Rhode Island School Of Design Manufacturer: Rhode Island School of Art, Museum of Art ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 091151760X |
Book Description
Patterns and Poetry: No Robes from the Lucy Truman Aldrich Collection, Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, is a beautiful and informative publication on the RISD Museum's collection of costumes for the Japanese No theater. This collection, arguably the finest in the United States, was assembled largely on the spot in Japan during the 1920's by Rhode Islander Lucy Truman Aldrich, sister-in-law of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The 47 robes came to the Museum by gift and bequest from Miss Aldrich herself and represent all catagories of No costume. Four essays document the history of the collection, including Miss Aldrich's encounter with Chinese bandits; poetic allusion in the imagery of the robes; the traditional methods of making No robes; and the evolution of No costume over 650 years. Individual entries with color illustrations discuss each of the 47 objects.

Inside Blab! #6's super-hip cover by Richard Sala, you'll find a showcase for cutting-edge cartoonists. Skip Williamson introduces us to his drunken cartoon libertine "Necropolis Keester." Doug Allen's lovable character Steven makes another Blab! appearance in "Steven--in the Showdown." Frank Stack and Joe Coleman have illustrated character "portrait" prose pieces. Party-girl Mary Fleener has a two-page strip on the inside-front and inside-back covers called "As American as Mom, Apple Pie and Martinis." In his skewed style Richard Sala presents his comics story "Where Is Christine Brooder?," featuring a washed-up detective, a mysterious "pillow killer," and a reference to Gogol's Bird Museum. And finally, balancing out the humor of Gary Lieb's "Pets That Drink" and Justin Green's "Great Moments in Alcoholism," is a sobering look at real-life alcoholic cartoonists (a profile by Monte Beauchamp, John Petrie, and Dan Clowes).Book Description
Welcome to the preeminent anthology of the graphic design and illustration arts. BLAB!'s list of contributors past and present reads like a Who's Who of the contemporary visual art world, and each volume is an eclectic mix of the world's most exciting artists from both the fine art world and commercial fields. Conceived, edited and designed by five-time New York Festival of Advertising award-winner Monte Beauchamp, BLAB! has grown from a digest-size b/w fanzine begun over 15 years ago to an annual coffee-table showcase that bridges the ever-narrowing divides between high and low art as well as abstract expressionism and representationalism. Simply put, BLAB! is an objet d'art that has become a standard-bearer in the world of the professional visual arts.Included in this volume: David Sandlin's "Slumburbia," a four-page color panorama depicting the temptations of the American family unit; Sue Coe's "WOMD" (weapons of mass destruction), which focuses on the weapons that affect the planet every day, from poverty and pollution to AIDS, globalization, factory farming, the criminal 'justice' system, and ignorance (featuring text by Judy Brody); Documentary filmmaker and award-winning children's book illustrator Laura Levine recounts the bizarre case of the Picolo Midgets, a vaudeville circus act that traveled throughout America during the early 1900s; Spain Rodriguez delivers an autobiographical view of the origins of Playboy and the sexual fervor it spawned during 1950s America; Editor Beauchamp contributes "Kilroy Was Here," a history of World War II's big-nosed, chrome-domed, graffiti cartoon icon crudely scrawled on surfaces everywhere by G.I.s who travelled throughout the world; Marc Rosenthal's "What's Dat?" is a surreal, philosophical and social critique centered around the travels of a small graphic shape as it moves around our world; Mark Landman returns with another adventure of "Fetal Elvis"; And much, much more, including BLAB! regulars Gary Baseman, The Clayton Brothers, Drew Friedman, Blanquet, and others, all wrapped under a gorgeous cover by BLAB! sophomore Camille Rose Garcia.

More Bathroom Humor.......2002-09-19
This sequel to the hugely successful "Bathroom Reader" contains more of the same useless, but interesting, trivia and facts on just about every imaginable subject. From debunking rumors (like "Dr. Pepper's secret ingredient is prune juice) to explaining how Alfred Hitchcock shot that famous shower scene, you won't want to put this book down even after you've finished your business.
CRAP-TACULAR!.......2001-04-01
Anyone who has any allusions of trying to get on a TV trivia show (like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire) will definately want to familiarize themself with the writings of Uncle John. It's helped me expand my knowledge base greatly. I've also loved books like "5087 Trivia Questions and Answers" and "American Trivia", but Uncle John managed to keep me laughing while filling my head with facts. Frankly, I didn't want to leave the bathroom.
Some little ditties you'll find in this volume...
Thomas Crapper, Myth or Hero! Strange Lawsuits!! Churchill Speaks!!! Tales of 60's TV!!!! Common Phrases!!!!! The Gumby Story!!!!!! The Nut Behind Grape-Nuts!!!!!!! AND MUCH MUCH MORE...
I loved this book and my advice...

Customer Reviews:
This book is awesome.......2004-01-04
The book goes in chronological order, for the most part, and shows the concept drawings and paintings, the storyboard sketches (and text), and places them next to finished photography of the sets and characters, which gives you a great idea of how the concepts are turned into reality.
It takes you into character development for all of the major characters, with concept art to final film stills. The characters covered are: Nightcrawler (with a great full page poster of "the amazing nightcrawler"), Charles Xavier, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Rogue, Storm, Pyro, Magneto, Mystique, Mutant 143, and Lady Deathstrike. Most characters have only 2 pages each, but Nightcrawler, Mystique, Wolverine, Mutant 143, and Lady Deathstrike have multiple pages which show sketches and final photography.
The locations/sets covered in the book are: the White House, X-Mansion, Cerebro, Plastic Prison, X-Jet, Alkali Lake, and Stryker's Base.
This book is 100% filled with great content: drawings, photos, and storyboards, along with a section on the special effects. I wish it were twice as big, but everything in the book is awesome.
