5 out of 5 stars That's why i bought american showcase 22 and 23.......2000-07-16

I just bought this book a year ago. first time i saw this book at the bookshop, the first impression is the packaging/ cover of this book. its so thick and heavy, but the content...WOW! what can i say, the best reference for illustrator / graphic designer. many techniques have been used to make great illustration. From science fiction, cyber-art, human form, fantasy, comic and etc. It costs me a lot to pay this book, cause i'm in Australia, but it's worth to buy. That's why i bought american showcase 22 and 23. And this time from Amazon, cause Amazon has give me better deal! :-) Now i'm waiting for American Showcase 24!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful...........1999-02-26

...a must have for any artist that is constantly learning from others. Every one of these books that I've seen has been great. As most artwork goes, every one is very different. I first found out about them through my father who purchased #17 in New Orleans, where I used to live. Since then we both have been hooked. I really suggest any of the American Showcase books if you can find the spare cash. P.S. Just to let you know, this book really contains no data on "how to". It is simply this, a HUGE collection of famous and not so famous graphic designer's work, who all deserve recognition if only we had that much space in our brains.

To celebrate the end of the second Common Era millennium, the Whitney Museum of American Art mounted a tremendous nine-month show covering American art from 1900 to 2000. Curator Barbara Haskell takes on the first part of the exhibition in The American Century: Art and Culture, 1900-1950. Included are images from painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, and design, providing a comprehensive overview of artistic and cultural ideas in the first half of the 20th century. Then, Lisa Phillips, a director of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York who previously spent 20 years at the Whitney overseeing many of its famous (or infamous) biennials, addresses 1950 to 2000.

Book Description

A slipcased set of the two American Century volumes, published in association with the Whitney Museum of American Art. The American Century is the subject of a year-long exhibition at the Whitney Museum --the most comprehensive display of twentieth-century American art ever assembled, incorporating a wide range of masterpieces from all sections of the country, by both familiar and lesser-known artists.

Volume I, covering the first half of the century, is a history of American art as well as a permanent record of the Whitney show. Here fine arts achievements are seen as part of the larger culture that helped shape them --the art forms of film, dance, music, literature, photography, decorative arts, architecture, fashion, and industrial design. All are described and set in the context of political and social currents of the era in Barbara Haskell's rich and informative text. Essays by noted experts in many fields illuminate developments in different areas of artistic endeavor while over 750 full-color and duotone illustrations give visual testimony to America's dominant role in the arts.

Volume II is a compelling panorama of art in America during the second half of this century. Shortly after the Second World War a group of American artists moved away from representation and realism toward a completely nonrepresentational style which became known as abstract expressionism. Led by Jackson Pollock, Willem De Kooning, and others, it was the first truly American painting style, and it quickly moved the United States into the forefront of innovation. A succession of other movements followed, including Pop Art, with adherents like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein; the performance art of John Cage and others; video art, led by Nam Juin Paik; and installation art of grand proportions. In this expansive volume Lisa Phillips explains the excitement and inventiveness of American artists in the context of the varied and sometimes turbulent social environment as well as the expanding economy of postwar America. Essays by experts in related fields illuminate parallel and diverse developments in architecture, dance, music, literature, painting, sculpture, cinema, and design. With over 700 color and duotone illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Creativity never looked so good.......2007-01-21

It was the word Culture in the title that made me buy these fascinating books. I wanted something that explained American creativity in the broadest sense and I thought, having used them both for some time now, that the text and images succeed brilliantly.

What really made the books come alive for me was the extensive use of long sidebars to explain how the various strands of art and culture evolved. They are placed to support the relevant material mentioned in the main text and written by fourteen contributors who professionally deal with the subject they are writing about. To give you a flavor of this here are the sidebars for the Thirties:
Architecture of the New Democracy
Federal Writers Project--The American Guide Series
Music in the 1930s
Colonial revival--Idealising the Past
Cinematic Documentaries for the People
Photo-Essays
Big Band Sound
Depression-Era Social Dance
Choreography in Film
Thirties Genre Films
Literary Responses to Catastrophe
Theater in the 1930s
Biomorphism and Organicism in Design
Domestic Architecture--Towards a New Geometry
Industrial Design--Streamline Moderne
Architecture--The Streamlined Future.
All of the sidebars are complemented with some excellent pictorial material.

Another reason I like the two books is because of the elegant straightforward design that makes the paintings, photos and graphic material very accessible. The very clean look only throws up the quality of the pictorial material, printed on glossy paper. Most of the paintings would seem the obvious choice to represent the dozens of artists mentioned but I was very impressed with the photo and graphics selection to accompany the main text and sidebars.

Both books celebrate a hundred years American art and culture and perhaps, in a small way, they are excellent examples of this very creativity.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Peter Jenning's Version.......2000-05-24

Haskell and Phillips' literary companion vividly preserves a wonderful exhibition of art for those who were unable to make it to the Whitney to see it, and, for those who did and wish to relive The American Century again and again. The vivid reproductions of the art, along with thoughtful, relevant writing offers readers and art enthusiasts a thrilling, in-depth look at the best of American art and culture in the last century. The book, as well as the exhibit, works equally well as a history text, and would be a valuable asset to any high school history classroom. The book's aesthetic appeal makes it perfect for display on any bookshelf of coffee table--which is a shame. Sadly, many people might neglect the actual text, which is as detailed and valuable synopsis of American history in the twentieth century as any other printed to date.

Hardbound. The international seminar on Comparative Performances of Seismic Design Codes was the first opportunity for 'The Concrete Committee' of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) to organize an international event to disseminate its own research products and activities world wide.

The topic of the seminar was selected following the 1996 publication of 'The Seismic Design Code' by 'The Concrete Committee' of JSCE.

The damages suffered by modern concrete structures during the Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake in 1995 was the principal motivation for these revisions of the code. This presented an opportunity to try to compare the performance of the revised code with those of existing major seismic design codes in the world, i.e., CALTRANS Code, EURO Code 8, NEW ZEALAND Code.

Due to the unique seminar format, Volume 1 of the proceedings introduced explanatory notes for the four codes. In addition, the four codes were applied to the compa

              Book Description

Patterns and Poetry: No Robes from the Lucy Truman Aldrich Collection, Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, is a beautiful and informative publication on the RISD Museum's collection of costumes for the Japanese No theater. This collection, arguably the finest in the United States, was assembled largely on the spot in Japan during the 1920's by Rhode Islander Lucy Truman Aldrich, sister-in-law of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The 47 robes came to the Museum by gift and bequest from Miss Aldrich herself and represent all catagories of No costume. Four essays document the history of the collection, including Miss Aldrich's encounter with Chinese bandits; poetic allusion in the imagery of the robes; the traditional methods of making No robes; and the evolution of No costume over 650 years. Individual entries with color illustrations discuss each of the 47 objects.

Inside Blab! #6's super-hip cover by Richard Sala, you'll find a showcase for cutting-edge cartoonists. Skip Williamson introduces us to his drunken cartoon libertine "Necropolis Keester." Doug Allen's lovable character Steven makes another Blab! appearance in "Steven--in the Showdown." Frank Stack and Joe Coleman have illustrated character "portrait" prose pieces. Party-girl Mary Fleener has a two-page strip on the inside-front and inside-back covers called "As American as Mom, Apple Pie and Martinis." In his skewed style Richard Sala presents his comics story "Where Is Christine Brooder?," featuring a washed-up detective, a mysterious "pillow killer," and a reference to Gogol's Bird Museum. And finally, balancing out the humor of Gary Lieb's "Pets That Drink" and Justin Green's "Great Moments in Alcoholism," is a sobering look at real-life alcoholic cartoonists (a profile by Monte Beauchamp, John Petrie, and Dan Clowes).

                Book Description

Welcome to the preeminent anthology of the graphic design and illustration arts. BLAB!'s list of contributors past and present reads like a Who's Who of the contemporary visual art world, and each volume is an eclectic mix of the world's most exciting artists from both the fine art world and commercial fields. Conceived, edited and designed by five-time New York Festival of Advertising award-winner Monte Beauchamp, BLAB! has grown from a digest-size b/w fanzine begun over 15 years ago to an annual coffee-table showcase that bridges the ever-narrowing divides between high and low art as well as abstract expressionism and representationalism. Simply put, BLAB! is an objet d'art that has become a standard-bearer in the world of the professional visual arts.

Included in this volume: David Sandlin's "Slumburbia," a four-page color panorama depicting the temptations of the American family unit; Sue Coe's "WOMD" (weapons of mass destruction), which focuses on the weapons that affect the planet every day, from poverty and pollution to AIDS, globalization, factory farming, the criminal 'justice' system, and ignorance (featuring text by Judy Brody); Documentary filmmaker and award-winning children's book illustrator Laura Levine recounts the bizarre case of the Picolo Midgets, a vaudeville circus act that traveled throughout America during the early 1900s; Spain Rodriguez delivers an autobiographical view of the origins of Playboy and the sexual fervor it spawned during 1950s America; Editor Beauchamp contributes "Kilroy Was Here," a history of World War II's big-nosed, chrome-domed, graffiti cartoon icon crudely scrawled on surfaces everywhere by G.I.s who travelled throughout the world; Marc Rosenthal's "What's Dat?" is a surreal, philosophical and social critique centered around the travels of a small graphic shape as it moves around our world; Mark Landman returns with another adventure of "Fetal Elvis"; And much, much more, including BLAB! regulars Gary Baseman, The Clayton Brothers, Drew Friedman, Blanquet, and others, all wrapped under a gorgeous cover by BLAB! sophomore Camille Rose Garcia.

4 out of 5 stars style over substance.......2004-01-06

blab is a very attractive book/magazine. it employs some of the most talented artists and designers in america today (chris ware, jason baseman, among many others...look them up, you may recognize their work if you don't already know them), doing short comic stories and illustrations, as well as one or two pieces of short text fiction and maybe an article or two. it is fascinating, and beautiful. the book is oversized, and is as coffee table ready as comics get without being a hardcover book. my only critique is that some of the stories are hollow, leaving me apathetic, lacking the meaning that, say, drawn & quarterly manages to give to their work. still, anyone who enjoys contemporary art, comics, or design, will at least find this lush book exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Culture and Amusement a great combination.......1998-07-02

I have a friend who complains that there is nothing left of art and culture. Actually, I've heard it many times from many friends, and although many would balk at calling comics (the little drawings and word balloons) art, I can't find a reason to distinguish it otherwise. Blab is a platform for this form of art, and more. It's culture and wonderful insight, it made me wish I could draw - I found myself wishing modern films were this interesting! I hope they can do many many more.

This sequel to the hugely successful "Bathroom Reader" contains more of the same useless, but interesting, trivia and facts on just about every imaginable subject. From debunking rumors (like "Dr. Pepper's secret ingredient is prune juice) to explaining how Alfred Hitchcock shot that famous shower scene, you won't want to put this book down even after you've finished your business.

Uncle John's Second Bathroom Reader is a great book when #2 is really on your mind. From cover to cover this book has tons of: trivia, answers to the inane, and things that you've probably heard before but forgot all about it.

Anyone who has any allusions of trying to get on a TV trivia show (like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire) will definately want to familiarize themself with the writings of Uncle John. It's helped me expand my knowledge base greatly. I've also loved books like "5087 Trivia Questions and Answers" and "American Trivia", but Uncle John managed to keep me laughing while filling my head with facts. Frankly, I didn't want to leave the bathroom.

Trivia abounds galore in this book and it is for anyone who has a love for useless inforation. You quickly gain an appreciation for the minds that put this book together. Book Description

Illustrated with over 300 stills and drawings, including the complete screenplay, the only book on the making of the spectacular X-Men 2 and the X-Men film franchise.

Outcasts from society, the X-Men are genetic mutants, born with superhuman powers, who harness their special abilities for the greater good. But the human race they fight to protect rejects and fears—even hates—them.

Initially realized in the Marvel Comic Book adventures, the first X-Men major feature film was released by Fox in 2000, directed by Bryan Singer, who had previously directed Apt Pupil and The Usual Suspects. Its stunning success—theatrically grossing nearly $300 million worldwide, and becoming a video and DVD phenomenon—signaled the current wave of comics to film adaptations and guaranteed the sequel, which reunites the principal cast members and the original's key creative team, including director Bryan Singer, cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel, and production designer Guy Dyas.

The new X2 will feature several surprises, including favorite mutant characters from the vast X-Men comics universe, who are new to the film franchise. 300 color illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome.......2004-01-04

If you are looking for concept art, production stills and behind the scenes photography, this is the book.

The book goes in chronological order, for the most part, and shows the concept drawings and paintings, the storyboard sketches (and text), and places them next to finished photography of the sets and characters, which gives you a great idea of how the concepts are turned into reality.

It takes you into character development for all of the major characters, with concept art to final film stills. The characters covered are: Nightcrawler (with a great full page poster of "the amazing nightcrawler"), Charles Xavier, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Rogue, Storm, Pyro, Magneto, Mystique, Mutant 143, and Lady Deathstrike. Most characters have only 2 pages each, but Nightcrawler, Mystique, Wolverine, Mutant 143, and Lady Deathstrike have multiple pages which show sketches and final photography.

The locations/sets covered in the book are: the White House, X-Mansion, Cerebro, Plastic Prison, X-Jet, Alkali Lake, and Stryker's Base.

This book is 100% filled with great content: drawings, photos, and storyboards, along with a section on the special effects. I wish it were twice as big, but everything in the book is awesome.

4 out of 5 stars NICELY PUT TOGETHER!.......2003-11-26

THE BOOK DESIGN AND CLASSY JACKET ALONE ARE WORTH THE MONEY. LOVED THE MOVIE. THE ONLY PROBLEM THAT I HAVE IS THAT THEY DON'T PUT ENOUGH COHERENT STORYBOARDS INTO THE CONTENT. ALSO, THE NIGHTCRAWLER'S MOCK-UP CIRCUS POSTER DON'T REALLY GIVE ANY ADDITIONAL VALUE OVER THE BOOK'S GENERAL CONTENT.

                    5 out of 5 stars The Ar of X2: X-Men United.......2003-06-30

My first impression was WOW! This book captures the essence of the movie. It's great to see the story boards it just makes you remember every scene of this excellent movie. It's obvious all the crew involved in X2 cared a lot about details and art and this book crowns it. The addition of the movie script is great, i think we fans love to read the original script to see what scenes didnt make it to the final and wonder what they looked like (if they add them in the DVD it would be fantastic). The quality of this book is absolutely great. Beautiful pictures in every page you turn. A must to every X2 fan.

                    5 out of 5 stars X-cellent collector's edition!!!.......2003-06-11

Being new to the world of the X-men, this book has everything to offer for the die hard fan. The Beautiful black hardcover (not to mention its wonderful slipcover with the entire cast on front) is amazing! The book is filled with illistrations, costume drawings, stroyboards, idea drawings of the proposed danger room, characther bios, and the best part...the complete movie script of X2! Well worth buying. I would suggest any fan to buy to add to his/her collection.

5 out of 5 stars While we anxiously await the DVD..........2003-05-30

An astounding companion to the film, this book should be on every X-fan's wish list, and probably on that of anyone interested in how a real two-hour block of entertainment is made. There is real heart in this film--it stands out from most summer blockbusters as a simple, non-preachy statement on tolerance, gorgeously wrapped up in the craftsmanship of thousands of film artists, performers, computer graphic artists, and editors. It's a work of art, a rollicking ride, and this book is a terrific tide-me-over for anyone yearning to own the film on DVD in the future.
