Book Description
The first volume of An Encyclopedia of Archetypal Symbolism was a stunning collection of color images and text organized around mythic themes that follow the solar calendar from cosmos and creation to death, transformation, and rebirth. In this second volume, the focus is the human body as a carrier of deep psychological insights and sacred meanings. Whether idolized or abused, the body is the object of much fascinated attention, even obsessive preoccupation, in the contemporary Western world. What has been missing from our culture's preoccupation is an appreciation of the body's organs as symbols of the deepest contents of the human psyche. This book surveys the richness of meaning found in a wide range of beautiful sacred images from the world's traditions and explains what the symbolism of our physical form teaches us about the inner realities of our consciousness, spirit, and divine essence.

A Powerful Work in the Jungian Tradition.......2005-08-10
George Elder was one of my professors of religion back in the 1980s. I have not seen him since then, but in discovering and reading through this work I could hear pieces of his lectures project from its pages, and recall the calm cadence of his voice during discussions of comparative religion, Christian theology, Freud and Jung. Although at the time I had not warmed-up to Jung (I was young and foolish, I suppose), I have since developed a great appreciation for both Jung and George Elder's lectures and vast learning.
The Body is written in accessible and easy language, inviting all to explore its pages, which are filled (as befits a Jungian perspective) with provocative, archetypal imagery from across the spectrum of culture and religious thought, and across time. The book's size may suggest it is a "coffee table" volume, but it is far from it. However, those who would place it on their coffee tables may be wise - for their guests will, upon flipping through its pages, be pulled into a different world. They will be introduced to Jung's psychology and thought in the most seductive way, and I think they will have a hard time remembering the original purpose of their visit. And if they look closely and if there is time enough, they will see themselves, or at least that part of themselves that stares out from behind the mask of civility, reason, and control.
Glad to see Dr. Elder is still in the game, and better than ever.
A Masterpiece In More Ways Than One!.......2000-10-14
This is a beautiful book! Each aspect of the body, from the first chapter on the "Primordial Body," though the chapters on the bones, blood and systems of bodily functions, to the final chapter "Transformed Body," is covered in painstaking attention to detail. Each chapter is preceded by several lines of appropriate verse from a wide variety of authors and poets and includes many essay entries relating to the chapter's theme. For instance, the chapter on the eye begins with verse from Meister Eckhart and Ralph Waldo Emerson and includes the essays "The Eye of God," "The Eye of Horus," "A Cyclops," the "Conversion of St. Paul" [who was blinded by the light of Christ] and many other entries on the eye. The chapter on the skin begins with verse from Akiko Yosano and Peter Meinke and includes the essays "White Tara," the "Black Virgin of Einsiedeln," a "Tattooed Couple" and "Job Suffering from Boils," among other entries. Additionally, each of Dr. Elder's wonderfully articulate essays is accompanied by an appropriate, beautiful and interesting image. The image is first described in detail and then discussed in terms of cultural context, archetypal and psychological meaning. There is also a bibliography at the end of each entry. I would recommend this book for just about anyone! Whatever your profession or interests, this book is an endless source of information and fascination. The beauty of this book is its ability to garner acceptance for the body in its many shapes, sizes and colors, its peculiarities and quirks and even its defects! I guarantee, this book will not stay on your coffee table gathering dust.

Book Description
Fabrications begins with a single germ in feminist film theory--the "to-be-looked-at" aesthetic described by Laura Mulvey--and pushes it further, considering the pleasures women derive from consumer culture against the social costs they have paid as wife, mother, and worker. Here, American feminist film theory converges with British cultural studies; critics survey the connections between the female consumer and the female viewer, the motion picture industry and the ready wear industry, the fashion in critical theory and the fashion in clothes. Contributors: Jeanne Allen, Sarafina K. Bathrick, Charles Eckert, Jane M. Gaines, Charlotte Herzog, Angela McRobbie, Betsy Holdsworth Nielson, Laurie Schulze, Gaye Studlar, Maureen Turim, Elizabeth Wilson.
Book Description
From off the streets of Cleveland, the amazing and occasionally regrettable true-life adventures of Harvey Pekar, cineaste.
Harvey Pekar is from Cleveland. This much you know. But with the release of American Splendor, the indie hit film based on his comic of the same name, the world discovered Harvey in earnest. Once Harvey was content merely to flirt with fame. But when fame wanted a commitment, he found himself a household name. Sort of. And, to tell you the truth, it’s starting to bug the hell out of him.
An original, incisive graphic novel featuring the talents of R. Crumb, Gary Dumm, Mark Zingarelli, and other artists, Our Movie Year chronicles a whirlwind twelve months in the life of Harvey Pekar. It recounts his rise from the filing room at the Cleveland VA hospital to the red carpet at Cannes, Sundance, the Oscars, and beyond–where Harvey won awards, accolades, and the promise of a bigger paycheck. A lot of funny things can happen in a year, and many of them happened to Harvey. And now everyone gets to read about them in Our Movie Year.
Customer Reviews:
The padding is some of the best stuff!.......2006-03-24
I got a big kick out of the "American Splendor" movie. In addition to being a fun flick, it brought Pekar some well-deserved attention. It was nice to see him get interviews and a chance to travel around.
It was pretty much a sure thing, then, that I would buy "Our Movie Year," a comeek about Pekar's brush with fame.
Well . . . I'm not sorry I bought the book, but it's a mixed bag.
Here's the disappointing part: Unlike "Our Cancer Year," this isn't a single story book, planned from the beginning, or even a collection of original short pieces. It is a compilation of dozens of short pieces, apparently reprinted from magazines and Harvey's own comic. This would be OK, but in many cases they cover the same events. Some are reprises of how Harvey came to write autobiographical comics . . . a story well known to anyone who has read the earlier "American Splendor" anthologies. Sure, in some cases the material is told from a different angle, or in more detail. For example, Harvey's reprisal of his rocky relationship with David Letterman is more honest and introspective.
What really made this book worth buying was what might be considered padding, totally unrelated to the events surrounding the movie: Short illustrated pieces on famous authors, jazz legends, and other cultural items. Items like these are how Harvey earns his living, and it was really neat to see them. In addition to being interesting in their own right, they show that Pekar can more than "stories about nothing."
I give this one a thumbs up, and would especially recommend it to those who haven't read any of Pekar's other books.
Another Excellent Collection.......2005-03-27
If Harvey Pekar didn't write comics and his work was in essay form, I'm sure he would be considered one of the best writers working today. But, because some people are still afraid to take comics seriously, he has a cult following, made stronger because of the AMERICAN SPLENDOR film.
OUR MOVIE YEAR is an excellent addition to his work. It is made up of comics from around the time of the making of the film. From his first selling the rights, to the various times the production fell through, to the eventual release and acclaim.
The thing that is so wonderful about Pekar and his comics is just how honest they are. I mean, a large part of the story are his financial worries, his worrying about if he will be able to sell enough freelance articles to supplement his pension, and if the "buzz" on him will die down after people forget the movie. Most acclaimed writers wouldn't be so honest.
The collection isn't just about the movie. There are several biographical pieces on favorite writers and musicians that are wonderful as well.
It is a must own comic, not just for fans of Pekar, but for anyone who wants to read a wonderful writer.
Thumbs Up.......2005-02-11
Not quite as good as American Splendor: The Life and Times of Harvey Pekar but still very good and should not be missed. I cannot help but relate to Harvey because the similarities in where he used to work (I used to work in the medical records department of a hospital) his love of comics and jazz and his friends who are loveable but quirky. This is definitely not for those who are only into super hero oriented comics. This is day to day scenerios that happen to any ordinary person but Harvey tells his stories in an extraordinary way.

Called by readers "blazingly funny," "utterly original," "erudite," "sophisticated," "deranged," "a comedic genius," and "a brilliant intellect wasted," if one could stew Dave Barry, Hunter Thompson, Al Franken and David Sedaris down into a thick, tasty ragout which might then be served over noodles with an appropriate side vegetable, that might begin to approximate the unexpected experience of spelunking into the unusual mind of Henry E. Panky.
Pessimistic but full of longing, immersed in popular culture but oddly erudite, profoundly deluded and yet uncomfortably honest, join Henry as he examines, in a thoroughly questionable and highly refutable manner, and with wildly fluctuating amounts of insight and sensitivity, those baffling and incongruous issues of modern life no one else will touch with a boathook.

A General Absence of Free Will.......2005-02-02
Henry isn't sure why at age 15 he bought the John Denver album. He continues, "Let's chalk it up to raging pubescent hormones, psychotropic drugs at too early an age, too many Herman Hesse books, a compromised decision making capacity, and a general absence of free will."
Well, I don't know why I think it's so funny when he makes fun of John Denver, especially since I've always liked his music, but it is funny. Pubescent hormones? Yes, neurobiology tells us they'll make us crazy...psychotropic drugs at an age perhaps earlier than 15?...whew...too many Herman Hesse books? Well, I read them all in my mid-twenties, and several of Louis Lamour's, but the Hesse entry does work nicely. The last one - general absence of free will - blew me away! - one side of an ever current philosophical enigmatic question thrown in following a bunch of unrelated one-liners which strangely enough make a coherent and hilarious sentence.
To a conservative political pundit, Panky says, "Darling Ann, my winsome hyena, how I yearn to slip the tough leather straps over your slavering muzzle and ride you like a gaucho through the befouled and slippery charnel house of your political desires." Wow! This sentence paints quite a picture for a guy like me who doesn't really understand poetry. Continuing..."Your saccharine sophistries reek (italics) of an utterly Faustian and silver-tongued sodomy of the human spirit." I don't think he likes her.
Tongue in cheek he deprecates himself: "Even utter strangers naturally sense my Ivy League roots. Those lustrous days spent upon the mountain peak of academe, bathed in the brilliant light of reason, breathing in the high, Rocky mountain spring water of purest intellect, have imbued a certain effulgent je ne sais quoi (italics) deep into my very marrow. It's who I am. You might as well try to hide the Koih-noor diamond under a cheap thrift store merkin."
Well, okay, I have to keep the English and French dictionaries handy, and several trivia books. When I understand most of the servings, I feel proud. By the way, these examples from the book weren't exactly cherry-picked. When I came across the "free will" comment, I decided I had to write a review. The other 2 selections were just short enough, had not been mentioned in other reviews, and were found in the next 7 pages.
This book is an introduction to a new way of perceiving our world, the Hank E. Panky way. If you are tired of the same old mundane books...if you have memorized the self-help book by your commode...Try a little Hank E. Panky, and I predict a satisfied customer. I can't wait to get my hands on his next book.
I am in love with Henry Panky.......2005-01-25
I first fell in love with Henry Panky on his web site. I would have willingly had his baby had it not been for the onset of menopause, the fact I was already married, lived 2000 miles away and hate inconvenience. I was aware of his sick obsession with Meg Ryan and even Renee Zellwegger, but it didn't stop my heart from beating wildly. Brilliant comedic writers have always been my weakness. When the book came out, I devoured it like a dingo at a turkey farm. Stay away from me Henry, this is too big for the both of us!! I'll always have your book to keep me warm and giggly.
Gonzo journalism of the neurotic psyche! .......2004-12-12
Moments of pure brilliance shine through the deluge of self-important information, conspiracy, smut, self-help, sales, scams and spam that is the neon strip of the world wide web where I first encountered Henry Panky. If you don't recognise yourself in this portrait you're delusional! The mercilessly self-depricating, perpetually puffed up, deflated, flatulent, moaning, crowing character that is Henry Panky crossed over the hazy line to where he began building his own magnificent legend. It is a delight to share his excruciating pain. Dear sir: thank you for your wonderfull, ridiculous comedy. I laughed til I cried. It is a deranged world we live in and these 173 pages of lunacy helped me face tomorrow laughing. This is one #$@!!! funny book!
Hysterical look at the baffling contradictions of life.......2004-12-06
Unfair & Unbalanced: The Lunatic Magniloquence of Henry E. Panky by Patrick M. Carlisle is a wry and captivatingly hysterical look at the baffling contradictions of modern life. Holding no hypocricy sacred, chapters such as "O' Foreskin, Where Art Thou?" and "The Crisis in Pubic Hair" do not hestiate to push the envelope on human sexuality, while "Letter to Dave Barry", "The Insatiable Meat Cleaver of Bette Davis", and "Letter to Ann Coulter" challenge other public figures in an eye-popping manner. Unfair & Unbalanced spares no effort to be hysterically funny, perhaps at the price of good taste but what is that, really? No fewer than four separate disclaimers lead into the hilarity, and the whetted observations within require it, for they are at least four times as cutting-edge as the leading "fair and balanced" commentary.
Tuned into the world's humor ley lines.......2004-12-06
Henry E. Panky, Associate of Arts (candidate) is the insane alter ego of author Patrick Carlisle, though several disclaimers try to convince readers otherwise. Why use your alter ego to write a book of assorted rants? If you published an essay titled "The Crisis in Pubic Hair" would you want your name attached to it?
Unfair & Unbalanced lives up to its title, though it is more unbalanced (in a mental sense) than unfair. Panky does everything from proclaiming a sick love for Meg Ryan to trying his hand at mystery writing, and all of it is hilarious. Some of it even makes sense, and that is worrisome.
Carlisle, as Panky, knows how to make people laugh. Whether he's fumbling a review for an old movie he saw years ago (but just got around to writing about), or trying to explain his mandago bag , he is tuned into the world's humor ley lines. Not everyone will appreciate his efforts or even get it, but who cares?. He's doing this for the sinners, intellectuals, welfare cheats and politicians of the world, and they're the ones who most need to read this work of brilliance. -- Doug Brunell for the FEARLESS REVIEWS

Doing Philosophy at the Movies.......2005-05-13
In "Doing Philosophy at the Movies" Gilmore opens the philosophical `doors of perception' and exposes the magic of holarchies, i.e. the discovery of patterns in parts of wholes that are parts of still greater wholes.
He suggests that "if philosophy and movies can be usefully thought of as tools, then their uses will be determined by what we need to get done with them." Movies offer a means of "transport...into a new condition...[which] may be a new state of mind or a new perspective or a new mood." He argues that in a state of "transport" we are leaving something and approaching something else, motions (and emotions) from and to, simultaneously.
In order to understand the nature of the journey, however, there needs to be a certain amount of reflective activity, incorporating a sense of story integration, assimilation or application that is best accomplished through philosophical investigation and discovery. We understand things by thinking about them, and in that regard movies constitute "externalized thought". The further back the archer can draw the bow, the further the arrow will fly: the more we understand the trajectory of investigation, the more likely we will experience growth.
"Philosophy is done for the sake of the community because without someone observing and tracking the unseen forces operating in a society, the society is blind. Without philosophy, society moves forward through new situations, new crises, new economic as well as new ethical conditions without any sense of where it is going." This argument is especially poignant today as the forces of globalization flatten traditional hierarchies, forcing previously insulated groups and individuals into new ethical dimensions and moral dilemmas. Doing philosophy at the movies means understanding the framework and the method by which the producer tells a story.
Gilmore offers a number of excellent philosophical investigations of issues inside certain movies (that are the subject of the text) that could also well stand on their own, independent of a relationship with a movie. Perhaps most importantly, he makes movies relevant. This is new territory for movie producers. More than mere entertainment with popcorn, movies explore serious ethical and moral issues, with direct application to everyday circumstances. By examining the issues, we grow a little closer to understanding those things we do not understand. The book will be an excellent resource for anyone wanting to dig deeper into the relationship between philosophy and movies; in fact, this book would be a great item for a book reading club or discussion group.

Book Description
Grandmaster Uhlmann has played the French almost exclusively throughout the whole of his chess career, defending its honour against some of the all-time greats. No one could be better qualified to explain how Black should go about Winning With the French.
In this book, up-to-the-minute theory is based around sixty of Uhlmann'smost important games, dealing with variations in which Black can play for the full point with confidence.
Includes Uhlmann's victories over Fischer, Bronstein and many other grandmasters. Choice of repertoires against all of White's main options. Sharp ideas for Black against White's unambitious approaches. 157 pages.
Customer Reviews:
A superb "Living History" of the French Defense.......2007-03-30
The French Defense has been used by stronger chessplayers than Wolfgang Uhlmann, and has seen its fair share of action in World Championship matches. But there has never been a player so loyal to the French Defense as GM Uhlmann. He is a hero for all devotees of the French (like myself), having faced many of the World's best and never shying away from his pet defense. Has he ever played anything else against 1.e4?
The French Defense can be played as a stodgy, defensive weapon, or as an uncompromising, counterpunching system. I have played countless games in both styles, and both are valid depending on one's temperament/mood/tournament situation. Uhlmann's book is comprised of 60 games played in the second style. It is true that some of the variations nowadays are *possibly* not the best, but there is much to be learned in terms of how the opening can be handled, and the kind of chances available to the second player.
The book has chapters delineated by variation, so it is easy to find ideas (abundant!) in the particular lines you are looking for, and features games played from the 1950s through the 1990s. Uhlmann also admits to using subvariations not favored by theory, but that he has faith in. And I daresay, if Uhlmann has faith in the lines, so can we! Even Botvinnik, Smyslov, and Petrosian did not live and die by the French as much as Uhlmann.
Each French player has his or her favorite books, but this is one most of us agree on.
Stunningly enjoyful book.......2005-10-29
I have almost every french book published in recent five years in my collection, but they are primary the books about openings and its many variations. But one can feel strong emotions about this book, feel the love and mastery of its author about this particular opening, he never shy away from. This book is not too big or too tick, but it has covered almost every subvariation of french nicely. There are even 5 fully anotated game vs Kings indian attack, very annoying for some french players, and even 4 games in exchange variation. I am using this book when i need refreshment and inspiration in french. Best collection of french games available.
Sensational!.......2004-06-24
I have over 500 chess books, and this is one of my ten favorites. I keep coming back to it again and again, unlike the hundreds of supposed classics that sit on my shelf un-opened. Many say that games collections annotated by the GM who played the games are the best teaching tools. The problem that I often have is that there is no connecting themes between the games. I play the French as black. So, I would like to have a games collection of games in the French. The Korchnoi Best Games book is great because there are quite a few games where he plays the French. And of course there are books by and about Nimzowitsch and Botvinnik where a few French games are featured. But here we have a unique book by Uhlmann. In all 60 games of this book, he plays black in the French. The annotations are brilliant, concise, and instructive to follow, without being too dense or over-the-top, as are annotations by Nunn, Speelman, and Timman. Those are all good authors, but they do not write for the masses; they write for top-flight GMs. This book has a directness and an instructive theme that is lacking in those other works. It will inspire you to play the French, and will inspire your chess in general. It is one of the best chess books that I know.
A must have for the serious French defense player.......2003-01-07
GM Uhlmann is certainly an acknowledged specialist in the French defense. I for one decided to buy this book to deal with problematic variations as black (i.e., Tarrasch variation and KIA) I found more than I could possibly hope to find in the book. For one, this is not just an insuferable encyclopedic treatise bound to be outdated the minute you buy it. It isn't a pedantic presentation of lines with no logical sense but a concise and fun explanation of IDEAS commonly used in the French. GM Uhlmann promises in his book to show you what's typical and how to find your way out from unknown situations over the board and gives you an arsenal of weapons to enrich your French defense.
The book's format is simple: Anotated games by Uhlmann full of comments, variations, ideas, and opinions. I found it interesting to see that GM Uhlmann shows a remarkable objectivity when mistakes by him appear on the games. With utmost professionalism he warns about his mistakes, suggests an alternative approach, and implicitly tells you how to fine tune the opening. I have applied many of the ideas presented on this book and can say that I feel more confident each time I play the French. GM Uhlmann makes you fall in love with the French by exposing the ideas behind each variation and how to thrive when facing unknown situations.
I must forewarn anyone reading this review that the book is very specific in the variations covered: Tarrasch closed and open (with an isolated queen pawn), Winnawer, Advance, KIA and exchange. Do not expect to see the classical variation among the lines covered or any other non-fashionable lines. GM Uhlmann has worked the above repertoire of the French defense and since those lines are his specialty you will learn them thoroughly with him.
In regards to negative aspects of the book I can say that I would like to see a more thorough discussion about the pawn structures that result commonly and how to play the resulting endings. This is of course very subjective and it is just my opinion on how to deal with the study of chess openings. In spite of that, I believe that discussing pawn structures resulting in the French would make the book just perfect. However, I am giving the book 5 stars because it delivers what it promises to the reader.
It is true, what they say about this one........2002-11-23
This one by Uhlmann has the special something that separates art from the mundane. It brims with love and care about his French Defence, yet it is objective too. He does not smirk at white's various lines, such as the King's Indian Attack. He treats chess with respect, and he does not make ridiculous claims, ala Watson, that the French will give black an edge in every line. This book is a keeper, and I don't even play the french!

Great info, good read........2006-05-14
Neither a textbook not a novel but very well organized common (and not so common) sense advice how to prepare a winning business plan. I used the book while I wrote one myself and I couldn't finish reading - every few pages or so I returned to my PC and edited my business plan which I believe now has better chances for success thanks to Mr. Rich.
The Only Guide To Use.......2006-03-19
I have tried to find other how-to-books on business plan writing but no other gives you the concise step-by-step instructions this one does. I have written plans for others as well as myself using this book. $$$ have been raised and compliments have been received on the no nonsense approach to business plan writing. I have used this book for over 15 years and have given them to others to use.
Business Plan Wisdom Well Worth Your Time.......2005-10-20
This book is aimed at those entrepreneurs who are seeking a substantial equity investment for their fledgling going concerns. The focus is the view from the perspective of the professional investor, the venture capital firm officials; the people who say yes or no about fairly large sums of money. These professionals are most responsive to management teams, teams which have a decent quantity of the right experience and which include members who cover the management and necessary technical disciplines well.
Business plans, however, are needed and should be used in many other business situations including sole proprietor startups as well as established companies aiming to launch special projects, new products or other ventures.
The good news about this book is that
It is easy to read
It has sound wisdom to impart to virtually all who are considering the preparation of a business plan
It steers the reader away from "forms" (fill in the blanks formats & software) as well as sample plans.
On this last point the authors write: "Sophisticated investors disagree strongly with such "cookie-cutter" approaches to writing business plans simply because the financiers believe that each business is unique, with its own special marketing, sales, production, and other issues." If the book convinces the reader of this key point it will have performed a great service.
From my perspective the content covers all of the important issues that make up the business planning process. The advice is very sound if you can make appropriate adjustments for your particular business situation. Conveniently each chapter is neatly and briefly summarized with the key points to be retained by the reader.
Virtually all entrepreneurs need to sell their business concept. It may be to family and friends, to key customers or suppliers, to potential partners, private investors or key employee prospects and to one or more lenders. All potential entrepreneurs should read the final chapter titled "And Now It's Show Biz". This chapter tells how to cap off an efficient and effective business plan with an equally effective oral presentation.
For the book's primary audience this post-plan interview procedure is critical in securing venture capital funding. The advice contained in this last chapter, however, can be applied by any entrepreneur talking to any important audience (with appropriate adjustments). This chapter is, as the saying goes, "worth the price of admission."
Highly recommended as the "one book" if you should limit your reading to just one.

A Concise and Timeless Guide To Effective Business Plans!.......2001-12-28
With this book as a reference, several years ago my MBA team was able to take our B-plan to 2nd place in a national scholastic B-plan contest. I have referred to it annually since then to guide my on-going planning. I also use it as a playbook for developing new business plans. It helps focus your planning efforts on the key questions that investors want answered in a plan.
Each chapter addresses an aspect of the planning process and gives anecdotal examples of plans that were presented to the MIT forum. The summaries at the end of each chapter help expedite the annual review.
I cut my teeth on Mancuso's various B-plan guides almost two decades ago and this book, by far, gets you where you want to go in the most direct manner. If you only want one book on B-planning, this is it.
