The EXCELLENT coffee table book.
"THE LAST GREAT BAY" by Richard Bickel
Is a huge large format work filled with wonderful photos, interesting text, and a love of the area that Bickel came to care so much for that he made it his home.
I spend quite a bit of time in Appalachicola and the surrounding area during the year and I can tell you that he has hit the nail on the head.
Now, if all those 'other' people would just go away.

All of Dover Publications' pictorial and fashion history books are great resources, at low prices. This one covers a wide variety of goods, and is an exceptional resource.
Gimbel's, while concentrating on clothing, devoted over 40 pages of its spring 1915 catalog to a wealth of housewares and furnishings, sporting equipment, bestselling novels, and even patent medicines, all available by mail. A remarkable 'snapshot' of everday life in 1915, and a lot of fun to browse through!

More interesting characters cross the path of Decapitator Asaemon.......2005-09-30
"Ten Fingers, One Life," Volume 5 in the "Samurai Executioner" series, has four short stories and three longer tales from writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima. The common denominator is that seven characters come into contact with Yamada Asaemon. Only five of the seven have a fatal meeting with the shogun's executioner, with two of the longer stories being about two rather different law enforcement officers. By this point in the series the title character is more of an observer, who offers wise comments or appropriate quotes from sacred texts as the denouement of the various stories:
(16) "Ten Fingers, One Life," has to do with why it is that when Asaemon cuts off someone's head their hands clench. This becomes a question that the great thief Inaba Kozo discusses with this executioner before deciding that he wants to die with his hands wide open.
(17) "'Matta'" is what Hachizo of Yasho yells right before Asaemon is about to decapitate him. The cry stops the executioner in mid-stroke, and after completing the execution he seeks out the dead man's sister to learn the meaning of that terrifying cry.
(18) "A Puff of Life" is about the final request of a young woman who wants to enjoy a last smoke before her execution. Again, Asaemon seeks out someone to explain.
(19) "The Leaf Thief" is a young girl who insists on sweeping up the fallen leaves around town. When she starts coughing up blood Asaemon insists on taking her in and the doctor reports she has tuberculosis. Even though it is killing her, the young girl continues to sweep up leaves and before she dies she offers a few words of explanations. This time, however, it is the next person he executes who is able to complete the puzzle for Asaemon.
(20) "Togane Yajiro" is the name of the demon of the jitte, lord of the northern town commissioner's office. He has been a patrolman for forty years who still gets his man every three days. When Yajiro refuses Asaemon's help in arrest a trio of thieves, the executioner takes exception to the patrolman's need to get all the credit. This means taking the matter before Yajiro's boss. But like most of those who cross the path of Yamada Asaemon, it is only at the point of death that Yajiro explains his actions and the catch-22 of his life.
(21) "Spark Umbrella" is a sequel to (11) "Catcher Kasajiro," a regular patrolman who became proficient with the kaginawa (hook rope). Now that he is successful, Kasajiro finds that his reputation precedes him and that criminals are prepared for him. This means that Decapitator Asaemon must help Kasajiro learn another lesson.
(22) "Life Link" is the story that justifies the parental advisory label for explicit content. A young woman has killed another woman and fatally wounded a man, but he has not died yet and the young woman does not want to die before her victim. The other women in the prison have only one solution and that is to be impregnated by one of the guards before the order comes for her death. If she is pregnant her execution must be postponed. But fate has a final irony for the young woman to confront.
"Samurai Executioner" is certainly different from "Lone Wolf and Cub," the manga series that first introduced most of us to the work of Koike and Kojima. The attention to period detail is still a hallmark of their work, but as you read through these small volumes, which are published in the Japanese format, you really come to an appreciation of Koike's ability to flesh out the characters who appear for a single story and how Kojima works elegantly works in cinematic techniques into his artwork. Now if Dark Horse could just speed up getting these volumes published because I am ready for the next one now.

This book does not go into very much depth about how to actually play the games (and thus leaves the reader a little confused), not to mention the book leaves out quite a few very popular drinking games altogether.

Greatness Indeed!.......2001-06-08
This is one of my favorite books about the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Very few books really delve into the fate of these brave men that risked all by signing this document. It is necessary to understand all that the signers went though in support of the Declaration...some were imprisoned, some had all their lands destroyed, and some even lost family members to stand behind the document. This book should be required reading, so that others can learn the history of these men, and in doing so learn the history of the conflict, and the steps taken to end it. To read this book is to understand what drove the signers to make the desicion they did, and what helped them stay strong in the face of such horrifying possibilities.
Greatness to Spare.......2000-06-14
If we fail to appreciate the quality of our founding fathers and the sacrifices they made, we will not understand the greatness of their creation. The audio Greatness to Spare follows the roster of the signers of the Declaration of Independence colony by colony, telling of the risks they took when they supported this fledgling nation. Although some of the information is common knowledge to history buffs, there is still much to learn from this audio. The quality of the reader's voice is very good, a pleasant one to listen to. This tape is an excellent addition to a private library or to the colonial historian. And the price is right!

Music as a form of social activism dates back for centuries, but rarely has there been a movement as daring, exciting and provocative as homocore, the queer-oriented rock scene, which through its cult following in clubs around the country presents a brazen face to the queer sociopolitical movement.
Journalist David Ciminelli has been immersed in the queer rock scene since the early 1990s as a fan, writer, musician and band manager. His book drops you front and center as Brian Grillo, frontman for Extra Fancy, leaps from the stage at the Viper Room and chases a homophobic heckler up Sunset Boulevard. It takes you backstage as Pansy Division recalls being pelted by coins when they opened for Green Day during their career-making Dookie tour. Ciminelli's exploration charts the trendy homocore scene from the 1990s to today. Through interviews with scene leaders such as Pansy Division, Bob Mould (Husker Du), Jinx Titanic (Super 8 Cum Shot), I AmLoved, Clint Yeager (Sour) and the Skinjobs, Ciminelli tells the story of using music to promote tolerance and ponders whether pro-gay music is a powerful enough tool of activism to gain mainstream acceptance.
David Ciminelli grew up in Buffalo, New York. After moving to Los Angeles, he served as editor in chief of In Los Angeles magazine and editor of Unzipped, a gig he still has. When we asked him to tell us something cool about himself, he said, "I like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain." We don't talk to him anymore.
Ken Knox is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in Instinct, Unzipped, Fab! and Frontiers. He is currently adapting his column "My La-La Life" into a screenplay.

Useful for any starship-based traveller campaign.......2005-09-23
This book is helpful in that it not only gives stats for various ships, but also expanded rules for starship design and combat. What I find most interesting, however, are the parts where day to day operation of starships is described.
A happy medium.......2003-11-19
I have mixed feelings about this book after reading it.
At the bare minimum, I wanted Starships to expand on the various tech levels represented in the universe and I am pleased to report that the detail desired in the vehicle design was delivered. Still the rules aren't too bogged down, so designing new ships isn't going to overwhelm, like say designing a scratch vehicle from GURPS Vehicles.
And as expected with each GURPS Traveller installment, there are a couple more ships outlined and detailed, though the emphasis in Starships seemes to be Martial. But pleasantly detailed are some of the smaller vessels, the Boat, Pinnace, and Shuttles, which would be encountered quite often. The evolution of the top designs is laid out with enough flavor text to please the avid Traveller fan.
I have only two disappointments with Starships;
First, some of the assumptions with the Combat rules seem a bit silly, expecially when it comes to guided missiles. This may indeed be an attempt to "balance" combat and make encounters more survivable, but I found most of the new assumptions to be severely limiting and "unrealistic?" Either way the beauty of options are that they are just that; Options!
Lastly, the author did a terrific job giving the impression that life on a Starship is filled with boredom and tedium. So much routine and ordinary that rolling skill checks are largely unnecessary. This is to be contrasted with GURPS Starports, where a fairly routine and mundane subject was brought to vibrant and unexpected life. Starports suddenly became interesting! Unfortunately, the authors chose to take a romantic subject (starships) and emphasis a boring existence. In short, I expected something more rewarding and was disappointed with the results.
Now don't get me wrong, you WILL know everything you need to live on a Starship, and the rolls of everyone on board. Just to get too excited with the prospects.
Still, this is a four star product and if you want the different tech levels for vehicle construction, get this book. In addition there are a LOT more components added to starship design which can add a great deal of flavor to your campaign.

This was my 2nd business type book I've purchased.This book is all about how to being a good boss and looking after your staff and making your business a great place to work.Definitely a 101 type book.Plenty of advice here to help all business improve and keep good staff from leaving.
An ideal book that all business owners should have.
How weird is weird?.......2007-04-04
Get Weird is a book full of not-so-weird but some practical ideas on how to make your company better-recognized, your employees happier, and your bottom line stronger. The author of Get Weird is someone who believes creativity in management comes from the HR department, so he is the kind of person who keeps "techies", as he calls them, at arms length and tosses some Hot Pockets in periodically. But, as author Putzier points out, people go to three-day seminars thinking that if they get one or two good ideas from it, it will be worth it. By those standards, everyone will find Get Weird worth it.
My favorite: Family Day, when everyone brings in their children/parents/significant others, so they can see what the company and their loved one does all day. Everyone gets to leave with swag.
Stupider idea, could only come from HR: Casual get togethers that involved forced mingling featuring probing personal questions of fellow employees.
We do it better: Having the CEO take the entire company to a matinee, complete with complimentary snacks for all.
The Real Deal.......2002-04-15
As an insatiable consumer of business books, I can confidently say that "Get Weird!" is the most engaging, entertaining, yet useful business book I've ever read. It's chock full of great ideas guaranteed to make your workplace the one people on the outside want to get into. Putzier's humorous writing style and knack for knowing a great idea when he sees one make this one of the most enjoyable and beneficial business books you'll ever buy. I've recommended it to hundreds of people and will continue to for the rest of my career.
Good conversational thought-provoker.......2001-10-29
When John Putzier was a child, his mother told him he was weird. For most kids, being told they were weird might be traumatizing. Not John. He prided himself on being weird-different. Over the years of his career in human resource consulting, professional speaking, and college teaching, he has prided himself on being weird-just a little bit different, off-beat. The power of being off-beat is encapsulated in a quotation I learned in my growing-up years, "It's the usual thing, done in the unusual way, that captures the attention of the world."
John certainly has captured the attention of the world with his work. And how he shows us how to make this happen in our lives as executives, managers, and human resource professionals.
Weirdness is doing things differently. The results can be very positive, both in your confidence and in the results you can achieve. Putzier spends the first part of the book explaining this and setting up the reader to receive and consider 100 thought-provoking ideas. This section is titled Tapping Your Natural Weirdness, aka [also known as] Creative Thinking and Problem-Solving. The double title theme continues through the other parts of the book, enabling the reader to comfortably transition between Putzier's weird titles and terminology that will be more familiar.
One hundred ideas are presented in the balance of the book, categorized in seven sections. Titles of those sections are Weird Ideas to Win Today's Talent, aka Recruitment; Weird Ideas for the Care and Feeding of Today's Talent, aka Retention; Weird Ideas for Changing Your Company, aka Fun & Games with a Purpose and a Profit; Weird Ideas for Perks, Pay, and Pats on the Back, aka Recognition and Incentives; Weird Ideas for Educating Today's Talent, aka Training and Development; and Weird Ideas for Enhancing Your Company Image, aka Sales, Service, Public Relations & Personal Satisfaction. Idea 101 is in Part 8, where the author suggests that you have other ideas in your head that you can add to his list. Remember, Putzier is endeavoring to stimulate your thinking, not just give you pat answers or magic pills.
There are several additional features that add value to this book. The Table of content includes a phrase under each idea listing to quickly explain what the idea entails. An alphabetical list of ideas appears at the end of the book as an unusual, but helpful, index.
The book is easy to read and serves as a fine read-through in addition to a good reference book for follow-up.

You will very quickly realize that this person is a veteran who is not talking theory. There is very serious substance and great ideas that can make a difference in the workplace.
I must add that it was delightful to read in terms of being a fun book I did not want to put down.
