Book Description
The reign of Louis IX of France is widely recognized as one of the most important in the history of medieval France. Art and the Crusade in the Age of St. Louis examines the art patronage of the French king during the formative period of his reign. Focusing on the Sainte-Chapelle (the palace chapel and reliquary constructed in Paris) and the Arsenal Old Testament (an illuminated Bible made to commemorate the king’s disastrous crusade to the Holy Land). Daniel Weiss examines these works within their social, political, and religious contexts. This study offers a new perspective on the meaning of art during a defining moment in the history of medieval France and, more generally, thirteenth-century society in the East and West.
Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Book About an Art Masterpiece.......2000-01-17
Daniel Weiss has written an outstanding book on one of the great masterpieces of medieval art - Sainte Chapelle in Paris. His analysis and discussion tell us about this marvel of stained glass, and how it was built by King (Saint)Louis IX to house the Crown of Thorns and to make it the Christian equivalent of Solomon's temple in Jerusalem. Scholarly but readable, and beautifully illustrated.
Fascinating, informative, thorough.......1998-11-27
Dr. Weiss, a noted professor and scholar, has made a specialized subject very accessible and interesting. His thorough research, smooth writing skills, and thoughtful analysis are on display on each page. This is not just a book for art history experts - it should be widely read and enjoyed.
Book Description
Bella Italia. Home to some of the world's most creative and best known designers - Armani, Ferragamo, Gucci and Prada - all have their roots in a country renowned for its luxurious style and sexiness. From the heavy weight labels of Milan's most famous shopping streets, Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga, to the back-alley boutiques of Rome, to Florence's best kept secret - the San Lorenzo market, Where to Wear Italy spans the fashion spectrum.
Customer Reviews:
Where to Wear Italy 2006.......2006-03-14
Extremely helpful for all fashionistas. Makes a great gift for clients as well. Very well researched and a fun read.
Buy Born to Shop: Italy instead.......2004-04-18
I think that Born to Shop: Italy is far more informative and instructional. It is also more personalized with additional information on favorite hotels and cafes located in the vicinity of favorite shops. There seems to be much more information on bargain and outlet shopping, which Where to Wear ignores. Where to Wear also does not discuss price ranges and seems to assume that the reader is extraordinarily wealthy. I am taking the two books to Italy next month and will comment more later if I change my opinion!
Book Description
Courageous Souls explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest challenges, prior to birth for purposes of spiritual growth. The book contains ten true stories of people who planned physical illness, having handicapped children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing a loved one, and severe accidents. Because very different life challenges are often planned for similar reasons, readers who have not faced these specific challenges will nevertheless see themselves - and their motivations as a soul - in these stories. As readers come to realize that they themselves planned their lives, suffering that once seemed purposeless becomes imbued with deep meaning. Wisdom may be acquired in a more conscious manner; feelings of anger, guilt, blame, and victimization are replaced by acceptance, forgiveness, peace, and gratitude.
Customer Reviews:
not credible.......2007-09-30
I got to p. 300 and started reading another book. I found this book painstakingly slow to read, the information provided by the mediums: farfetched, and the conclusions drawn by the author, hard to swallow. Often, when mediums are tired, their accuracy rate diminishes. I never heard of any of the mediums used in this book. Robert Schwartz makes everything so complicated when the subject matter is really quite easy to understand. The book just doesn't flow easily and it's not a page turner in my opinion. I'm a believer, but this book really is a waste of time and money. Read Journey of the Soul by Michael Newton, PhD. Instead of using mediums, he enters the superconsciousness of his clients and elicits information from them directly about their experiences on The Other Side.
An Empowering Way to Reframe Painful Challenges in Our Lives.......2007-09-17
It has been said that asking oneself the question, "Who was I before I was born?" can teach us the most about our true spiritual identity -- yet few of us have been so enlightened as to have heard the full reply. COURAGEOUS SOULS takes this starting point one step further by exploring just how we may have crafted our entire life around all of our life circumstances -- both the high and the low points.
What sets Robert Schwartz's book apart from other books about spirituality, reincarnation and the afterlife is his organized use of intuitive readings as companion pieces to accompany the various life stories he includes. These intuitive sessions provide a deep sense of interconnectedness and unconditional love shared in our lifetimes which we sometimes lose sight of, as well as insights into how we continue learning life lessons from one life to the next. The stories include descriptions of people who have experienced tremendous suffering who are greatly inspired and relieved to see an underlying sense of purpose and meaning to all they have gone through.
COURAGEOUS SOULS is an exceptional book for anyone interested in exploring the true nature of their spiritual identity, who is willing to keep an open mind regarding the value of some of the most painful challenges we humans face in our lives on Earth; this is highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to reframe and find deeper meaning from the painful challenges, setbacks or hardships in their lives.
Some of life's challenges explained........2007-09-06
.
Before I even finished reading this book, I ordered more and had them sent to my friends. This book is amazing.
Told through many soul journies, Robert Schwartz brought in the talents of true mediums who were able to discover decisions that these people made before they were born - again. He did not use just one medium, but several, and they are listed in the back of the book. The individuals who shared their stories are also listed with email addresses -- and if they are able and have the time they will answer your questions.
This book came to me at a time I really needed to be reminded of my own experiences through many lives and the time between our next life. The stories are beautiful because they are able to explain why certain tragedies happen to a person.
I highly recommend this book, especially to those with open and searching minds.
Why Human Challenges Exist!.......2007-08-28
Courageous Souls is highly recommended to anyone trying to understand the suffering, tragedy or loss that has caused them to question life, death and/or God. And who among us is not inflicted by such challenges and questions in our lifetime? In my eight years researching life after death, spirituality and life purpose, I have discovered no better explanation of why human challenges exist than what is so eloquently written in Robert Schwartz's book.

Book Review.......2007-08-24
"Courageous Souls: Do We Plan Our Life Challenges Before Birth?" by Robert Schwartz is probably one of the most important books of our time, if not the most important. Here Robert explores the spiritual mysteries of why life paths sometimes seem difficult, challenging and perhaps even impossible. He explores and answers that deeply troubling and ever-present question of, "Why do bad things happen to good people?" Through the service of mediums, clairvoyants, trance channels, i.e., those we have come to term in general, as "psychics," who can connect with guides, angels, and the higher selves of those who have courageously stepped forward to be included in this fascinating subject matter, we discover many surprising truths. These truths can then, in turn, be applied to our own lives and experiences. This book has the potential to be life-altering for so many and comes forth at a time when everyone questions the real meaning of their existence here. The information contained in this book is beyond valuable. In addition, the author's innate compassion and his thorough approach of getting to the heart of the answers of the great mysteries of life, shines thorough like a guiding beacon for all. This is a must read for any who consider themselves on the spiritual path and also to those who are still searching for the path. - Dyan Garris - Author, Psychic, New Age Recording Artist.

Customer Reviews:
this is to melissa.......2004-01-05
um...you haven't read part one or two, and haven't seen the movies- logically, these would be very confusing. Maybe you could try reading these or watching the anime first, and then rate this book what it's worth.
argh...pretty, but very confusing.......2003-06-12
When I say it's confusing, I'm not talking about the fact that it's in the Japanese right-to-left format (meaning that you have to read everything in the book from right to left, starting with what would be the last page in an American book and starting with the speech bubbles on the right side of the page rather than the left). That can be pretty confusing, if you're not used to it, but it gets easier to deal with after a while. No, my problems are with the story itself: I had problems following what was going on a lot of the time. This could be because I haven't read volume one or two yet, and I've never seen any of the anime. Still, most of the time I was reading this, I felt like the writer wanted to make things seem mysterious and ended up making things incomprehensible instead. I would've appreciated it if there had at least been a little section at the beginning explaining who the characters were. I think I figured that out okay after a while, but I still got confused a lot. I think it was all the really big panels with no dialogue but a lot of really pretty art - they were lovely, but they didn't always seem to show too clearly what was going on.

Another Extraordinary Diner.......2006-07-18
I do love diners. You know how those special ones have an incredibly unique character that makes them gems--or some special dish that's uniquely theirs--and, also, I think of all the profound experiences I have had in diners: conversations with some extraordinary person I never expected to meet, overhearing extraordinary conversations.... "Deja Vu Diner" is like this. The poems explore the whole gamut of human experience: how the extraordinary is discovered by doing the ordinary everyday. "Deja Vu Diner" takes the ordinary, explores it, we--the readers--explore it, and see it in an extraordinary new way...
I left two copies of this book at the local cafe; one is now gone and the other is dog-eared.

Book Description
Alden Homer and Blake Whitman, the main characters in Déjà Vu, are traveling their own paths, which seem to cross more frequently than usual for two dissimilar guys on the road in Asia. Their thoughts and experiences are the pieces of jigsaw puzzle that the reader can assemble. In this age of technological innovation and interaction, this seminal work allows the reader to actively participate in the construction of the narrative, following the characters, settings, and/or themes of his or her choice.
Alden, who experimented with drugs during his Ivy League days, is now in his 50s. He has passed through Wall Street and sacrificed a marriage to his literary aspirations. Searching for the Muse, he'll settle for enlightenment.
Blake, the narrator, is taking a year off before medical school, and is enthusiastically seeking the adventure he could only read about - or see in the movies - back home in Middle America. He chases the Exotic.
Independently or together, these two colorful characters encounter a nymphomaniac, a murder victim, Christian fundamentalists, Hindu holy men, inmates at a mental institution, and a yeti - not to mention their own dreams.

Déja Vu: .......2005-09-30
A rare book that combines modernist formal experimentation with excellent post-modernist content and prose; this novel that is as much about form as it is about plot.. Part bildungsroman part travelogue, both funny and serious, a blend of facts fictions and dreams; it consists of 76 (or maybe 77) chronologically and stylistically disconnected chapters that can be read in any order. The author suggests a series of reading trajectories with 5 possible continuations after each chapter. Some will quickly loop you back to where you've already been and others carry you through a large portion of the book.
Innovative but not extremely so, the book risks comparison with novels like Cortázar's Hopscotch and Perec's Life: a User's Manual (I generally don't like to use the word 'risk' in art criticism, but I think it's appropriate here) and I think it stands up very well. Saying that I actually preferred this to either of them would sound pretentious; but I'll go so far as to say that the content of this novel is more to my liking than that of the others. Although I didn't travel in my youth, my life fits more into the introspective speculative mode of this book.
The traditional prose is easy to read and should please a broad range of readers. I'll assume that anyone who primarily reads romances or historical novels hasn't gotten this far in this review so I can safely recommend it. It's definitely worth a look.
A web of life..........2005-08-11
Deja Vu is full of lyrical descriptions of far off lands yet hits home with absolute poignance; it presents the world in a prism of adventure and experimentation, so much so that it reminds one of the enduring spirit of American literature. Kendrick revives Melville, Twain, and Kerouac in a voice that openly rejects the conventions of today, even as it demands fresh perspective. The book is essentially a search for truth, its form is unique and inventive, based upon the cyclical nature of time, subjectivity and the concept of fulfillment. I recommend it to everyone tired of the monotony of an everyday performance without avail, to you who lust for travel!

Book Description
Most of us have been perplexed by a strange sense of familiarity when doing something for the first time. We feel that we have been here before, or done this before, but know for sure that this is impossible. In fact, according to numerous surveys, about two-thirds of us have experienced déjà vu at least once, and most of us have had multiple experiences.
There are a number of credible scientific interpretations of déjà vu, and this book summarizes the broad range of published work from philosophy, religion, neurology, sociology, memory, perception, psychopathology, and psychopharmacology. This book also includes discussion of cognitive functioning in retrieval and familiarity, neuronal transmission, and double perception during the déjà vu experience.
The Déjà Vu Experience covers the recent scientific discoveries and theorizing in perception, cognition, and neurophysiology, which have the potential to help clarify the cause of the déjà vu experience. In addition to summarizing the major historical and contemporary theoretical approaches to the déjà vu experience, the volume will also stimulate additional research on this curious cognitive glitch.

Product Description
At the pinnacle of his phenomenal career, one of Americas wittiest and most unconventional writers has re-invented fiction. Over the years, Kurt Vonnegut has tickled our funny bones and tugged at our heart strings with tongue-in-cheek appraisals of societys foibles and absurdities. Now, his latest creation is a witty memoir of observations about life, as he has lived and observed it, for more than seven decades. What if a bored universe decided to stop expanding for awhile and back us all up to the year 1991? Imagine reliving an entire unremarkable decade of déjà-vu without the benefit of free will. Picture the havoc when reruns are over, and people, free to choose again, have forgotten how. It seems that a book whose three protagonists are the author, his alter ego, and a conscious universe would be a challenge to read aloud, but narrator Norman Dietz does a remarkable job of making it sound easy. Be prepared for laughter and tears once again.

The Private Anguish Of Hollywood's Love Goddess.......2006-06-05
If you ever find yourself wishing that you could live someone else's life, or thinking that celebrities have an ideal existence, read this book biography of Rita Hayworth. Barbara Leaming meticuliously researched the actress's life, from her traumatic childhood as her father's dance partner and incest victim, her mother's alcoholism, her crippling shyness, and her deep insecurities that affected her relationships, her career, and finally, her tragic descent into alcohol abuse and Alzheimer's disease. She was forever after identified with her signature performance in "Gilda", defining an image that would last a lifetime, and from which she was desperate to escape.
Her choice of husbands often reflected the controlling traits of her father,
and her sad estrangment from her late daughter, Rebecca Welles, are just a few parts of this compelling, poignant biography. As this was before abuse was discussed and therapy was made available, Rita hardly could have been expected to live a demon-free life. Her youngest daughter, Princess Yasmin Khan, continues to raise funds and spread awareness for Alzheimer's research. We can only imagine the pain and anguish that Hayworth's loved ones and friends experienced as her mind deteriorated to the point where she did not recognize them. It would have been nice if the book had expanded upon her relationship with her five-time costar, Glenn Ford (who is only twice mentioned), with whom we now know she shared much more than a friendship. This book is a touching tribute to a woman who appeared to live everyone's fantasy life, surrounded by stars, wealth, power, success and public adulation, but in reality lived a nightmare of pain, abuse, low self-esteem and pathos. Peace and love to the lovely Rita.
Wonderful biograhy of Rita Hayworth.......2000-09-23
This is a wonderful biography of Rita Hayworth my favorite of all the biography's oh her. I think Mrs. Leaming did a wonderful job on the people she interviewed including rare informantion from Rita's second husband Orson Welles which she also wrote a biography on. I recommened this book to every Rita fan.
A great biography on one of the most beautiful women to ever grace the screen.

The tragic life of Hollywood's "Love Goddess".......1999-02-01
Leaming takes a psychological approach to her film star subjects, backed up by key interviews and archival and print documentation. The story of Rita Hayworth, Hollywood's Love Goddess, is poignant and well told. Hayworth was identified with her screen role, Gilda, the fiery, redhaired temptress who drove men wild. In real life, though, as she was supposed to have said, "Men go to bed with Gilda and wake up with me," a sad and ironic commentary on movie-fed fantasy. None of her five marriages lasted long, and she was involved in countless lawsuits with husbands, her studio (Columbia), and ex-husbands. Leaming posits a possible reason for her failures as a lover, wife, and mother, that is, that she may have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her father, Eduardo Cansino. Mature-looking beyond her years and a talented dancer, she was her father's dance partner at 12, working to support her family in gambling casinos and other dives south of the border. Leaming backs up her assertions by relating Hayworth's adult behavior to that of incest survivors. She makes a provocative case, but since Hayworth died prematurely of Alzheimer's disease and never spoke on the subject, it has to remain pure--but nonetheless tantalizing--speculation. A fascinating read, and a sad one.

I Live in and Love LA..........2005-10-19
...and I loved this book. Sorry, but a Google is just not the same. This book mentions places I didn't know existed so I would know to Google them! (LA is a very big place. ) And it gives nitty-gritty secrets about each (especially the free days!) that many sites don't give. I keep it on my desktop right along with my writing references. It's saved me way more than the cost of the book.

Book Description
This memoir is the story of our uncle, Frederick Woodward Blanchard, and of the family members who supported and cherished him. Fred, a Boston native, came to Los Angeles (population 40,000) in 1886. A visionary, he quickly entered deeply into the life of his adopted city, and he began a forty-year love affair with the City of Angels that continued right up to the time of his death, in 1928.
With its Mediterranean climate, pristine coastline, rolling hills, and majestic mountains, Los Angeles served as a fertile setting for Fred's artistic sensibilities and dynamic leadership skills. And he looked at the cultural landscape of Los Angeles much the way an artist looks at a blank canvas. He saw limitless opportunities for beautifying and culturally enriching the city.
In 1907, Fred predicted that Los Angeles would one day become the largest city on the Pacific Coast. "What Italy is to the arts and music," he said, "so will Los Angeles become in time. Why not? With a climate which is so conducive to song and so ripens the artistic temperament, I believe Los Angeles will become one of the leading art centers in the country."
Fred worked tirelessly to advance his vision for the city. He developed and promoted a wide range of musical, cultural, and civic activities. He established Blanchard Hall, which contained the first art gallery west of Chicago. He served as a founder and first president of the Hollywood Bowl. He served also as chairman of the Good Roads Commission, and he's known as the "father" of the cluster lighting system. His influence can still be felt from Lankershim to Hill Street, from Cahuenga Pass to Hollywood, and from Broadway to the Bowl.
Fred was a dreamer, but he was also a leader who could turn dreams into projects that served all the city and all of its citizens. His name and his dreams and his works live on—indelibly imprinted on Los Angeles history, never to be forgotten.

Great Book about Los Angeles History.......2007-03-07
This is an interesting book about one of the early pioneers in Los Angeles. The photos were fascinating, especially the ones of the Blanchard family estate homes located at Barham and Cahuenga. It's hard to believe there was a time when that area of Hollywood (now Universal City) was completely undeveloped except for those two grand mansions on the hill. This is a great book for readers interested in the civic and cultural activities in LA during the early 1900s. Fred Blanchard's contributions were impressive. I enjoyed the book. It was an easy read, the photos are great and I would definitely recommend it.

Book Description
The only novel to feature Ben Jardinn, a two-fisted, hard-drinking PI with an office just a couple of blocks from Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Hardly a cat-and-goldfish story, Death in a Bowl is about a murder that takes place in the Hollywood Bowl during a concert, with a lot of action and some surprising twists at the end.
