Basics.......2002-04-23
The Basics of Artistic Drawing is an OUTSTANDING book. I have learned so much and whenever I review the materiel I learn even more. There are so many helpful hints. It is a book that keeps teaching; if you have any questions just review the section on that topic and your question will more than likely be answered. With the step by step instructions anyone can learn how to draw, shade, and paint. I am very impressed. This is a well thoughtout course with the student in mind. A lot of course books have the teacher in mind, this book is definately made for me as the student. THANKS!!!

Examines the ways in which hair has served as a signifier of class, gender, ethnicity, authority, conformity/non-conformity, and power throughout history. Countless issues and examples are explored in this volume including: hair styles of royalty; wigs worn by lawmakers and judges; ceremonial hairstyles of tribes throughout the world; Olvier Cromwell's "Roundheads;" hair in the counterculture (including the musical Hair); Skinheads, Mohawks and punk style; the hairstyles of First Ladies; celebrity hairstyles; women shaving their heads to subvert gender and sexuality stereotyping; the entire hair-care industry; the search for a cure to baldness; and diseases and disorders related to hair. Broad topics in this book include hair arrangement/styling; care and cleansing; business and commercial aspects; laws and legal matters; trends and trendsetters; and health and science. An introductory essay explores the universal human interest in hair and hair-styling throughout history and around the world. It is followed by alphabetically arranged entries, each including sources for further reading. This work is highly relevant to the study of class, gender, popular culture, and politics. A lavish set of color and halftone illustrations complete this fun and useful title.
Customer Reviews:
superficial and under-illustrated.......2006-09-05
I am a professional hairdresser and hairdressing historian. I was terribly disappointed when I opened this book. It has very few useful illustrations, particularly for hair before the 20th c The fact checking was sloppy and there are many factual errors that a lay person would not be able to catch. Heavy reliance on website information reduces one's ability to check facts. Use as bathroom reading only, not as an authority for scholarly work.

Hair has displayed more than changing styles: it's served as an indicator of class, gender, conformity and power throughout history - and ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HAIR: A CULTURAL HISTORY follows the changing issues surrounding hair and styles. World history and all cultures are taken into account throughout, with chapters opening with an essay on the overall topic, followed by alphabetically arranged entries along with black and white photos and bibliographic references. Any college-level holding strong in not only history and culture but fashion will find this appealing to many different genres.

Hair History Review.......2006-03-05

Book Description
In this volume of the internationally acclaimed series, master storyteller Stan Sakai treats readers to intriguing tales of Usagi on his own and catches up with a bevy of fan-favorite characters - "whodunit" maestro Inspector Ishida has another puzzling mystery to solve, bounty hunters Gen and Stray Dog are each on the tail of the possessed swordswoman Inazuma, bodyguard Tomoe has a new political rival in Lord Noriyuki's court, and Priest Sanshobo's temple is plagued by a vile demon! Throughout these stories we follow Usagi as he is roped into a covert smuggling operation, escorts a cantankerous old woman through dangerous territory, assists an inventor with a visionary flying machine and once again encounters a vengeful young samurai.
Customer Reviews:
Stan Sakai is a master story-teller.......2007-01-04
Stan is one of those rare illustrators that both writes and draws well. I love his playful drawing style and the complexity of his characters and their relationships. Though it doesn't possess the same WOW factor as Marvel/DC/etc works, it makes up for it with a clean B&W look that doesn't make the reader dizzy trying the follow the action.
Definitely worth a read. You'll be hooked before you know it, pining for the old books that have gone out of print.
Consistent.......2006-11-04
Sakai gets better every year. I've been following the rabbit for over 8 years now, and i can see the little differences between now and then. Though it was a bit more noticeable towards the begining of course. This book is shifting gears from the last arc of stories so isnt quite as unputdownable as previous chapters. Thanks Stan for doing a good job consistently, and keeping this reader wanting more.
Transition book.......2006-09-22
Unlike most Usagi books, this one does not have a central story. As what I like most are the long stories with a central theme, this book did not appealed to me as previous ones. Other problem is that the stories here are irregular, some showing all Sakay's talent as a storyteller, other not so inspired, some are probably just laying grounds for the next long cycle of stories and finally, some stories seems pointless, too disconnected from all the rest.
Even with all those problems, Usagi is still a great character, and the book certainly entertaining and enjoyable.
Not his best.......2006-08-02
One of the primary problems with this collection is that it seems disjointed and as if Sakai is trying to do too much in too short a time. There are a few stories with Usagi, one with Ishida, one with Gen, one with Tomoe, one with Sanshobo and none of these stories, save those that feature Usagi, have any connection to any of the others.
Further, a few more minor characters make abbreviated cameos, Stray Dog, Kitsune pop up for about 4 panels a piece and then disappear just as quickly. Only the return of a vengeful samurai in the final story seems to fit.
The reasons behind this are most likely that Sakai has just wrapped a long storyline involving Usagi and Jotaro and is now laying the groundwork for bringing another story-arc together, as well as interspersing a few one-offs to mix things up and keep his intended direction somewhat hidden until he's ready to reveal it. This book seemed somewhat lacking to me; Sakai did a better job with transition in Seasons. Still, if you're a fan, you'll pick this up, and if you've never heard of Usagi, you'll be better served choosing an earlier collection with which to start. I recommend #1, of course, but #6 is also a very good introduction.

Book Description
Following Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour to the page, Ron White (affectionately known as Tater Salad) delivers the laughs in his distinctive and beloved down-home style.
Fans of Ron White's perfectly-phrased everyman gripes and raunchy, grinning asides* will find much to appreciate here. He riffs on everything from obnoxious designer sunglass salesmen to his wife's wealthy but stingy family, and he revisits some of his most famous characters, such as his troublesome dog Sluggo (He ran away all day. He was gone for ten hours. So, to punish him, when he came home I took him for a walk.).
Best of all, White's hilarious material is accompanied here by clever artistic interpretations, courtesy of illustrator Matthew Schulz. BACKCOVER: Ron White's comedy is about as understated as a chainsaw, and twice as sharp.
STAR TRIBUNE (MINNEAPOLIS)
White's inspired comic mind finds a dozen sources of humor where the average comic would find only one or two, while making a fine art of the deadpan style.

Funny Entertaining Reading.......2007-09-02
If you have seen Ron White's routine on TV, you will see some of the same material in this book. You will also find a lot of new information about his life & work. Frankly, Ron should have been dead a long time ago as a result of the way he lives. But he has survived and made money doing it. Good book for adults. However, it is loaded with stories about sex, drugs & alcohol abuse, so it is not a book you want your junior redneck reading.
Ron "Tater Salad" White: You Can't Stop This Tater!!!.......2007-08-09
Great book....funny drawings..his more famous jokes are on Blue Collar Comedy Tour. Nice book to read if you want to enjoy your day with some humor.

I like anything by Ron White and this is a real page turner.
I Had the Right to Remain Silent...But I Didn't Have the Ability.......2006-11-03
Ron White is my absolute favorite comedian. However, the book was a little disappointing. I did learn some interesting things about his wild and woolly past, but I've alreay heard all the bits and I wish repeats of those had been left out of the book.
Typical Ron.......2006-10-08
Ron White is a funny guy. I've seen him numerous times on the Blue Collar Comedy DVD's and I have his CDs and he always makes me laugh. When I started reading the book I realized that the material was stuff I'd already heard. Thankfully, as I read on I realized that it wasn't all old material. To fully appreciate Ron White, you need to see his live performance with his Texas twang and sipping scotch like it was spring water. The book is a quick read and for any Blue Collar Comedy fan, you'll love it.

Natalie Portman Fantasy!.......2005-11-04
Natalie Portman is a famous actress from the Star Wars movies.
IF you like Natalie Portman then you should check out this DVD, My Virtual Cytherea. Hint: Cytherea has appeared on the Howard Stern Show and she is Natalie Portman's evil twin.
A GREAT English Book Report Book.......2004-11-24
This was a great book if you need one for a book report. It was very honest with who Natalie was, and I recommend it to any fan. Happy reading!!
EXCELLENT NATALIE.......2003-08-11
I THOUGHT I KNEW EVERYTHING THERE WAS TO KNOW ABOUT NATALIE. WRONG! AFTER READING THIS WELL-WRITTEN BOOK, I REALIZED HOW LITTLE I REALLY KNEW.
BEST PART: HER EXPERIENCES AT HARVARD.
I'VE READ A LOT ABOUT NATALIE, BUT I'VE NEVER HAD HER EXPLAINED TO ME, AS THIS BOOK DOES SO WELL. NATALIE SHOULD GIVE THE AUTHOR AN AWARD OR SOMETHING.
Shame on you Mr. Dickerson.......2003-07-18
I was really disappointed. A lot of the book is based on speculation about her background and no one knows for sure what is fact and what is fiction. The author seems to have some sort of obsession with the young lady and her sexuality and her apparent envy of another child star Britney Spears because she (Britney) became famous before her. He gives absolutely no evidence for his reasoning and it reads like a tabloid magazine, and really it's quite creepy that a grown man would dwell on it so much. He goes on to say more than once what a noble thing it has been that he has waited so long to reveal her real name, that by not doing so would go against freedom of the press, yet it's confusing to the reader because he apparently has only been aware of her for a couple of years. I literally feel guilty and sick for buying this book and supporting this guy. It's highly disrespectful to both Natalie Portman and her family.
Shame on you, Mr. Dickerson. Shame on you!
Dickerson lacks authority..........2002-12-25
I found this book to be nothing more than a high school-level book report on magazine articles and newspaper clippings. The fact that Dickerson himself admits that he hadn't really taken an interest in Natalie Portman until the year 2000 shows that he does not speak from any privileged vantage point. He is not privy to any special information about Natalie that would draw any intelligent reader's attention, nor does he offer any keen insight into things that even the most casual fan of Natalie Portman's would know through pop culture and the media. The fact that Dickerson fails to get substantial information from those closest to Natalie proves not only that he is irresponsible, but he lacks authority to speak on Ms. Portman as well.

An important book for Handel studies........2003-01-20
For anyone who has embarked on a research project concerning Handel and his life, this is one of the first books I would recommend. This a vast source of reprinted documentation, from personal letters to newspaper articles and contemporary criticism of Handel's life and work, all arranged in chronological order; - therefore it is an invaluable study aid. Definitely worth a five-star rating.

Book Description
For the chess player who wants to improve, it is vital to acquire new skills and, especially, to increase one's arsenal of attacking ideas. One of the most effective ways to do this is through pattern recognition and chess imagery. As most attacking games involve an attack against a castled king, Ziegler uses his 20 years of training experience to teach the most important attacking formations against the castled king. Many promising positions are squandered due to a lack of attacking skills, as in the position on the front cover, where a strong player overlooked a mate in four moves. If you read this book, this may never happen to you!

From One Woman to Another.......2006-02-22
As a woman in corporate America, I found this book to be provide some extremely wonderful information. It was as if the authors had interviewed me directly to come up with those traps. Since completing the book, I have changed the way I approach projects, and have found the steps in the book to be extremely helpful! The format was so easy to follow, and I related to so much of the information-especially the common traps.
Her Place At The Table.......2005-04-17
I have been in the banking field for 25+ years. This book provides a framework to study the corporate culture. I found it very helpful and enjoyed the book.
Well done...a helping hand for women on the way UP!.......2005-03-16
In March 2005, I attended the Office Depot Women's Success Strategies program. Speaker Anne Mulcahy, CEO of Xerox, was asked a question about the focus on recently-resigned HP CEO Carly Fiorina. Anne said that the key to making gender a non-issue was to get more women in the boardrooms. Amen!
Also at the conference, panelist Carol Frohlinger shared solid negotiating tips with the attendees. Impressed, I bought this book. WOW! This information levels the playing field. Get out there. Decide what you want. And, GET IT in a win-win way. Thanks, Carol, Judith and Deborah for doing your part to help women get to the top floor.

Highly Recommended !.......2005-02-23
Women in leadership positions will thank authors Deborah M. Kolb, Judith Williams and Carol Frohlinger for their strategic advice. Their book, solidly based on the experiences of 100 women in leadership jobs, clearly identifies obstacles women face in gaining legitimacy as leaders. The authors explain how women executives' incorrect - and possibly unconscious - assumptions increase their troubles. The book teaches readers to make their assumptions explicit and to overcome obstacles with step-by-step deliberate solutions. For instance, the book counsels you to get as much information as you can before taking a new position, and then to really think about what you have learned. The main chapters enumerate five major ways to gain respect and credibility as a leader, but the authors also provide advice on negotiation and some relevant questions for job hunters to ask. Although it gets repetitive, the authors accompany the final outline of major points with specific recommendations you can implement. We recommend this book to women in business who want to move up, or who already have.
For the senior professional.......2005-01-22
This book is strictly for senior professionals, which is a plus for VP's, SVP's and C-level women looking for input on their level. It focuses on women already in leadership roles and is at both times inspirational and instructional. Real-life anecdotes keep it from being simply a textbook read and I really, really liked the roadmap in Appendix A which outlines "common traps" and "strategic moves."
