Book Description
Since earliest times, humans have decorated their skin in endless ways and for fascinating reasons. Laden with cultural messages and imbued with aesthetic experience, body decoration is the ultimate form of self-expression in which the artists create for themselves a "second skin" as a testimony to the society in which they live, as a mirror of their own individuality, and as a reflection of the supernatural. This unrivaled collection of striking photographs traces more than ten thousand years of cultural historyfrom the body painting of stone-age peoples to the self-inflicted piercing of punks and the enduring image of the carnival clown in modern industrial societyillustrating an art form that is finding new relevance in the world of today. To set the plates in context, a distinguished team of art historians, ethnologists, and archaeologists has provided enlightening commentaries that document the development of an extraordinary spectrum of body painting, tattooing, and scarring techniques. Originally published in hardcover under the title Body Decoration : A World Survey of Body Art. 422 illustrations and photographs, 378 in color.

The Big Book of the 70's (Factoid Books)

Back when irony was just a literary device and people wore bell-bottoms for their own sake, Western civilization reached its zenith and nadir simultaneously. Jonathan Vankin's Big Book of the '70s looks in surprising depth at the trends and the notable figures of that decade, using illustrations from dozens of excellent comics artists like Shary Flenniken and Terry Laban. Richard Nixon, Jane Fonda, Burt Reynolds, and Jimmy Carter all get the Big Book treatment in a delicious combination of behind-the-scenes peeks and easily digested history lessons. Fads and phenomena like disco, running, and the rise of the women's movement are also explained and, in some cases, followed up through modern times. The writing is clear and snappy, the illustration is consistently well-done, and the topics chosen are a thorough, comprehensive mix of lightweight (pet rocks) and serious (Vietnam). --Rob LightnerBook Description
This new addition to the highly successful Big Book series takes a look back at the Me Decade. Among the topics in this volume are streaking, the rise and fall of Studio 54, pet rocks, the kung fu movie craze, the end of the war in Vietnam, and politics from Watergate to the Iran hostage crisis. Suggested for mature readers.Customer Reviews:

I did notice a lot of stuff overlooked. We get lots of history of television aimed at the young, but no "All in the Family" or "Mary Tyler Moore". Also, the movie history leaves out disaster flicks, mainstream gore, and so-called "blaxploitation" movies. But that's not really a fault so much as a good excuse for a Volume II.

about everyday life in Bible times; for early readers.......2003-02-25
The illustrations are cartoon-like and nothing special.
The writing is geared toward beginning readers. The compromise here is that the information is overly simplified and dumbed down.
Our children prefer to get much more detailed information from books with real photos such as the Eyewitness series of books which are supposedly for the 9-12 age range. I find using the Eyewitness books as a read-aloud with my children, beginning at age one is preferred by them and me. At the time they are one year old, I allow them to ask questions about the pictures and I read as much as I can before they turn the page. Also starting at one year old, both of my children loved to look over the Eyewitness books by themselves and study the pictures, and would ask me questions about what they were looking at. Eyewitness has books on prehistoric life, early man, Ancient Egypt, and others.
The only benefit to this book is that a beginning reader can read this to himself or herself. I wonder what is better: to read a book with more detailed content aloud or to have them read an overly simplified book to themselves? I am not sure what the correct answer is. Perhaps the best answer is to have a child read this book to themselves if they are truly interested in reading this type of content to themselves, and to supplement with the more detailed read-aloud books.

Sympathy for the Undead.......1999-11-08
DeWeese's comparison of Azalin's opinion of himself with other liches is telling -- evil though he is, Azalin still has that awful Lawful streak in him which causes him to rank himself above other liches who are greater wizards (or scientists) than he, merely because they seek knowledge and not power. One might say that all Azalin really needs is to get in touch with his inner child, but that is one experiment one hopes that he doesn't try undertaking again!
Paired with the first book of Azalin's story, King of the Dead, Lord of the Necropolis makes for a moving tale of sympathy for a monster. Together they are not exactly "Notre Dame de Paris," but who today has the time to read fifty pages of a book before coming to its anti-hero (besides which, the hunchback bell-ringer of Ravenloft is featured in "Tower of Doom"!). DeWeese's tales of Azalin's pathetic existence are quite acceptable to me.

A great conclusion to "King of the Dead".......1998-05-14
King Azalin's swansong is his greatest triumph!.......1998-04-03
Following 'King of the Dead', the author has improved upon his style and delivery -- though it may be presumptuous of me to say so, I believe that 'Lord of the Necropolis' is far superior to its prequel, both in plot and description. This is in part thanks to the lack of limitations on the author's part (the story of 'King' was practically already written by the makers of AD&D) and also to the writer's commendable imagination.
The plot of 'Lord' is at first glance incredible (an undead wizard king goes back in time, with the intention of saving his son and killing a vampire), but the smooth form employed by the writer lends a strange credence to the novel. Not only does 'Lord' conveniently answer unresolved issues in 'King', it also flawlessly blends with the events described in another book by a P N Elrod (this being the thoroughly enjoyable 'I, Strahd'). Although the conventional reader may balk at the many references to magic and illusion, anybody even vaguely familiar with Dungeons & Dragons will find this book good entertainment. And, if the reader already is a fan of Darkon, Azalin, and the Kargat, 'Lord' is an unmissable addition to his Ravenloft library!

First crossing of the Polar Sea,
Roald Amundsen Manufacturer: Doubleday, Doran ProductGroup: Book Binding: Unknown Binding ASIN: B00085L85S |
Book Description
On May 12th, 1926, at 1:30 in the morning Roald Amundsen and Lincoln Ellsworth looked down from the cabin of the airship Norge and knew that they were over the North Pole.It was a busy moment. They dropped flags - the American, the Norwegian, and the Italian. Two of them, Amundsen and Oscar Wisting had seen the South Pole - from dog sleds. The third, Lincoln Ellsworth, saw the culmination of years of planning the conquest of the Arctic by air.
Radio messages were dispatched, observations made and the pole circled. Then the Norge swung back into her course - a course whose thin tracing over the uncharted wastes was followed by millions - and pointed for Alaska.
Thus briefly the story of the flight. Yet into the forty-eight hours in the air were packed all the excitement, the hopes and fears and thrills and mishaps and prayers of a season of polar exploration on the ground. This is the history, written by the leaders themselves, of one of the most remarkable exhibitions of daring and skill ever recorded.
Customer Reviews:
Polar Exploration; A good book with lousy illustrations.......2002-10-09
Unfortunately, the illustrations are absolute disasters. I find it difficult to understand why any publisher (University Press of the Pacific, Honolulu) would release a publication with such shoddy reproduction of not only the photographs, but their virtually unreadable captions. The book would be improved by eliminating these pictures altogether. Most of the pictures are shadowy smudges on the pages, and do great disservice to the writings of these heroic explorers.
