      Book Description

Since earliest times, humans have decorated their skin in endless ways and for fascinating reasons. Laden with cultural messages and imbued with aesthetic experience, body decoration is the ultimate form of self-expression in which the artists create for themselves a "second skin" as a testimony to the society in which they live, as a mirror of their own individuality, and as a reflection of the supernatural. This unrivaled collection of striking photographs traces more than ten thousand years of cultural history—from the body painting of stone-age peoples to the self-inflicted piercing of punks and the enduring image of the carnival clown in modern industrial society—illustrating an art form that is finding new relevance in the world of today. To set the plates in context, a distinguished team of art historians, ethnologists, and archaeologists has provided enlightening commentaries that document the development of an extraordinary spectrum of body painting, tattooing, and scarring techniques. Originally published in hardcover under the title Body Decoration : A World Survey of Body Art. 422 illustrations and photographs, 378 in color.

Back when irony was just a literary device and people wore bell-bottoms for their own sake, Western civilization reached its zenith and nadir simultaneously. Jonathan Vankin's Big Book of the '70s looks in surprising depth at the trends and the notable figures of that decade, using illustrations from dozens of excellent comics artists like Shary Flenniken and Terry Laban. Richard Nixon, Jane Fonda, Burt Reynolds, and Jimmy Carter all get the Big Book treatment in a delicious combination of behind-the-scenes peeks and easily digested history lessons. Fads and phenomena like disco, running, and the rise of the women's movement are also explained and, in some cases, followed up through modern times. The writing is clear and snappy, the illustration is consistently well-done, and the topics chosen are a thorough, comprehensive mix of lightweight (pet rocks) and serious (Vietnam). --Rob Lightner

        Book Description

This new addition to the highly successful Big Book series takes a look back at the Me Decade. Among the topics in this volume are streaking, the rise and fall of Studio 54, pet rocks, the kung fu movie craze, the end of the war in Vietnam, and politics from Watergate to the Iran hostage crisis. Suggested for mature readers.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as other books in the series but still fun........2006-09-24

This is one of the better ones in the Big Book Of Series. It is not a jaw dropper like Big Book of Conspiracies or Big Book of Weird, but it is still a fun read.
I was not born until the 80's, but I thought this book was great. I never knew that Kissinger could be an intresting guy. This is all the cool stuff that you never got to see in That 70's Show. From the Son of Sam murders to the Pet Rock and the Brady Bunch it covers the wackiest decade with some amazing art work.
I just hope they do a Big Book of the 80's some day.

4 out of 5 stars mixed bag of retro tales.......2003-08-05

Comic book-style stories explain the fads, events, people, music, sports, and everything else about one of the more colorful decades in history. Trying to cover pet rocks and Viet Nam in the same book leads to some inevitable unevenness, of course, and the serious topics are often trivialized or over-simplified. But there are already many books on Watergate; buy this book to learn about streaking and disco.

5 out of 5 stars This book is cool.......2001-03-05

I put off taking Amazon up on the recommendation to buy this book (i had bought 4 "big books" in the past) I finally ordered it and received it Friday. I got it just in time because TLC ran a 70s special Sunday and FX has started showing 54. So now I can watch and read about the decade I was born in. I am planning on taping both this week when it airs again so I can have a 70s tape to go along with my book. ( Just wish my old beta vcr still worked lol)

5 out of 5 stars The '70s Are Back, Man!.......2000-11-19

This is the latest volume in Paradox Press' excellent Big Books series. It proves to be another winner! It chronicles the Me Decade, and analyzes how it affects society as we know it in this decade. It covers a lot of the wacky memories, like pet rocks, mood rings, and the fashions, plus some of the not-so-wacky memories, like the gasoline shortage and the Iranian hostage crisis. As someone born in the 1970s, I truly enjoyed this. But you don't have to be a child of the '70s to like it too!

        3 out of 5 stars The 70s, now in easy-to-swallow pill form.......2000-10-10

Pet Rocks, mood rings, streaking - They're all here. But this book also covers some of the heavier stuff from the "me" decade - politicians, drugs, riots, terrorism - and all very entertainingly. The art, as always, ranges from good to very good, and the writing is mostly sharp.

I did notice a lot of stuff overlooked. We get lots of history of television aimed at the young, but no "All in the Family" or "Mary Tyler Moore". Also, the movie history leaves out disaster flicks, mainstream gore, and so-called "blaxploitation" movies. But that's not really a fault so much as a good excuse for a Volume II.

3 out of 5 stars about everyday life in Bible times; for early readers.......2003-02-25

This is a non-fiction type factual book about very basic everyday life in the Bible times. The book discusses the type of houses that were used, the yard, how they sit to eat, what type of food they ate, how they cleaned up, and how they didn't have electricity. Some other facts are how they went fishing, the types of boats they used, types of tools they had, how they harvested crops and what people did "for a living" back then. These are not stories out of the Bible.

The illustrations are cartoon-like and nothing special.

The writing is geared toward beginning readers. The compromise here is that the information is overly simplified and dumbed down.

Our children prefer to get much more detailed information from books with real photos such as the Eyewitness series of books which are supposedly for the 9-12 age range. I find using the Eyewitness books as a read-aloud with my children, beginning at age one is preferred by them and me. At the time they are one year old, I allow them to ask questions about the pictures and I read as much as I can before they turn the page. Also starting at one year old, both of my children loved to look over the Eyewitness books by themselves and study the pictures, and would ask me questions about what they were looking at. Eyewitness has books on prehistoric life, early man, Ancient Egypt, and others.

The only benefit to this book is that a beginning reader can read this to himself or herself. I wonder what is better: to read a book with more detailed content aloud or to have them read an overly simplified book to themselves? I am not sure what the correct answer is. Perhaps the best answer is to have a child read this book to themselves if they are truly interested in reading this type of content to themselves, and to supplement with the more detailed read-aloud books.

                    Book Description

This expanded version of the original cult poetry classic contains not only all 106 haiku from the first edition, but also nearly 150 brand-new redneck poems that are sure to generate the same big laughs as the original. Once again, the redneck lifestyle gets the black tie treatment through the hilariously contrasting filter of the formal Japanese haiku. Each of the nearly 250 wickedly funny verses contains just three lines and 17 syllables, yet they address the whole spectrum of redneck culture: RVs, Wal-Mart, beer, pop tarts, pickups, monster trucks, NASCAR, boats, trailers, trailer parks, barns, hunting, shotguns, Las Vegas, the lottery, and more. Readers will laugh until the cows, chickens, and, of course, hound dogs come home.

Sometimes, traditional haiku bores me. Mentions of the season, nature, etc.

However, this book lends lighthearted humor to the poetry style.

I am scraching my head...at the previous reviewer, Perkins is one of the most brilliant and repected film critics alive. He is difficult...but so is most anything worth doing in life.

Perkins doesn't introduce concepts with astheticly pleasing headings, and entertaing pictures, then explain what each one means, and why its important...I am sure the "dummy's" guide books have done that already along with a 1000 others.

Perkins is one of a few critics who have transformed films for me and many others. I am so surprized and sad that so few have reviewed this important work.

While I'm sure students of film and film theory will find this book a valuable resource, a novice to the genre should probably seek out another book. Mr. Perkins does not elucidate the topic of film theory, but instead takes a heavy handed approach to the subject and leaves those unfamiliar with the subject scratching her head.

                    5 out of 5 stars Engrossing!.......1999-12-18

Although "just" an introduction of people whom Mozart associated with during his short life, it is engrossing because it gives a small, but well-painted context in which to view Mozart's life. It demonstrates that colorful people have colorful friends, and enemies.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-03-21

This is a great ravenloft book.

The characterization of the main character, Azalin, is excellent, and his tormenters are also suitably wicked enough that you can even sympathise with Azalin even after all the evil things he has done.

Buy this book if you are a ravenloft fan.

3 out of 5 stars Sympathy for the Undead.......1999-11-08

Like other readers I was confused a bit by the ending -- on my first reading. By the third time it was much clearer and the utter demoniac cruelty of The Voices which had tormented Azalin for centuries became horribly poignant as they obliged him to sow the seeds of his own, his brother's, and his son's destruction.

DeWeese's comparison of Azalin's opinion of himself with other liches is telling -- evil though he is, Azalin still has that awful Lawful streak in him which causes him to rank himself above other liches who are greater wizards (or scientists) than he, merely because they seek knowledge and not power. One might say that all Azalin really needs is to get in touch with his inner child, but that is one experiment one hopes that he doesn't try undertaking again!

Paired with the first book of Azalin's story, King of the Dead, Lord of the Necropolis makes for a moving tale of sympathy for a monster. Together they are not exactly "Notre Dame de Paris," but who today has the time to read fifty pages of a book before coming to its anti-hero (besides which, the hunchback bell-ringer of Ravenloft is featured in "Tower of Doom"!). DeWeese's tales of Azalin's pathetic existence are quite acceptable to me.

5 out of 5 stars A great conclusion to "King of the Dead".......1998-05-14

I can ask for nothing more than this book gave me. The conclusion of the tale of Azalin, Lich Lord of Darkon, is truly done with great skill by Gene DeWeese. The book not only ties loose ends from "King of the Dead", it tells the ultimate truth, and reveals the true nature of the Dark Powers. A must read for fans of Ravenloft, or anyone who has read the first novel.

5 out of 5 stars King Azalin's swansong is his greatest triumph!.......1998-04-03

This novel, though complete on its own, really requires the reader to be familiar with the character of Azalin. This will already be the case with those who play the AD&D game (in particular, the award-winning Ravenloft campaign setting), or those who have read the prequel, 'King of the Dead' (by the same author).

Following 'King of the Dead', the author has improved upon his style and delivery -- though it may be presumptuous of me to say so, I believe that 'Lord of the Necropolis' is far superior to its prequel, both in plot and description. This is in part thanks to the lack of limitations on the author's part (the story of 'King' was practically already written by the makers of AD&D) and also to the writer's commendable imagination.

The plot of 'Lord' is at first glance incredible (an undead wizard king goes back in time, with the intention of saving his son and killing a vampire), but the smooth form employed by the writer lends a strange credence to the novel. Not only does 'Lord' conveniently answer unresolved issues in 'King', it also flawlessly blends with the events described in another book by a P N Elrod (this being the thoroughly enjoyable 'I, Strahd'). Although the conventional reader may balk at the many references to magic and illusion, anybody even vaguely familiar with Dungeons & Dragons will find this book good entertainment. And, if the reader already is a fan of Darkon, Azalin, and the Kargat, 'Lord' is an unmissable addition to his Ravenloft library!

                        Book Description

Crossing the Unknown Sea shows how poetry and practicality, far from being mutually exclusive, reinforce each other to give every aspect of our lives meaning and direction. For anyone who wants to deepen their connection to their work-or find out what their life's work is-this book is essential to navigating the way.

"Readers who accept poet and Fortune 500 consultant Whyte's invitation to enter into 'an imaginative conversation about life and work' are likely to be challenged as well as delighted by the beauty of his writing and the expansiveness of his views. Gracefully using the metaphor of a sea voyage to depict the journey through the world of work, Whyte views work not only as a means of support, but as a means for interacting with the world and developing self-expression and identity...An abundance of provocative ideas... thoughtful readers will wholeheart-edly savor this book." I always enjoy reading Whyte's work. Few writers have equaled his command of the English language and his story-telling ability. The book evokes a great deal of empathy as many modern day workers struggle to find personal meanings to work/employment. Whyte provides a personal insight into how one may purposefully stay true to oneself. The reading is relatively lighter than most of his poetic works and is very enjoyable and thought provoking. If one doesn't like the content, he/she will at least enjoy the author's mastery in writing, especially his transitions from one point to another. Whyte is one of the few authors that can weave together difficult concepts with artistic cohesiveness and elegance. Highly recommend it.

My constant discovery of my "firm persuasion" helps me both at work and at home and dealing with the insanity of 9/11. It is easily one of the top 50 books in my business library and I quote from it regularly when I teach managers and leaders!

                            Book Description

On May 12th, 1926, at 1:30 in the morning Roald Amundsen and Lincoln Ellsworth looked down from the cabin of the airship Norge and knew that they were over the North Pole.

It was a busy moment. They dropped flags - the American, the Norwegian, and the Italian. Two of them, Amundsen and Oscar Wisting had seen the South Pole - from dog sleds. The third, Lincoln Ellsworth, saw the culmination of years of planning the conquest of the Arctic by air.

Radio messages were dispatched, observations made and the pole circled. Then the Norge swung back into her course - a course whose thin tracing over the uncharted wastes was followed by millions - and pointed for Alaska.

Thus briefly the story of the flight. Yet into the forty-eight hours in the air were packed all the excitement, the hopes and fears and thrills and mishaps and prayers of a season of polar exploration on the ground. This is the history, written by the leaders themselves, of one of the most remarkable exhibitions of daring and skill ever recorded.

A fascinating discussion of arctic exploration in a dirigible. Although only two authors are listed, other crew members included their accounts of the crossing, including that of HJ. Riiser-Larsen, who gives a fascinating and lucid discussion of the principles of navigation over the ice cap in a dirigible. Never mind that the writing is a bit awkward--English is not the first language for most of these guys.

Unfortunately, the illustrations are absolute disasters. I find it difficult to understand why any publisher (University Press of the Pacific, Honolulu) would release a publication with such shoddy reproduction of not only the photographs, but their virtually unreadable captions. The book would be improved by eliminating these pictures altogether. Most of the pictures are shadowy smudges on the pages, and do great disservice to the writings of these heroic explorers.
