Book Description
The Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider)--art movement was founded in 1911 by the young painters Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, and was active in Europe until 1914. Originally published in Munich in 1912 and edited by Kandinsky and Marc-- the movements's almanac presented their synthesis of international culture to the European avant-garde at large. In both the selection of essays and its innovative interplay of word and image, The Blaue Reiter Almanac remains one of our most critically important works of literature on the art theory and culture of the 20th century. This edition, long unavailable in English and indispensable to any student of modernism, simulates the original German format, and includes documents, and musical notations, as well as seminal essays by Kandinsky, Schoenberg, Marc, and others. Nearly 150 illustrations, from ancient and contemporary sources, capture the wide-ranging interests and passions that inspired Kandinsky's and Marc's programmatic attempt to make modernism accessible across national and chronological boundaries. Also included is Klaus Lankheit's extensive critical introduction, which places the Blaue Reiter in context for contemporary readers."The almanac remains unique among European writings on art; no other country produced a comparable work capturing the excitement and tension of the years before World War I." (Will Grohmann)

Seminal 20th Century Art Document.......2007-09-21
The editors, Kandinsky and Marc, put together this manifesto before World War I. It's an essential document for understanding the artistic ferment in Germany, France and Russia in the early part of the 20th Century.
Marc died at Verdun in 1916; Kandinsky pursued a successful career, and died in Paris during World War II. Both men believed that artists were the spiritual leaders of the future--a belief that still reverberates today.
A valuable scrutiny of the Blaue Reiter art movement.......2006-02-06
Originally published in Munich in 1912, and now available in English, The Blaue Reiter Almanac is a valuable scrutiny of the Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) art movement, which was founded in 1911 by painters Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc and remained active in Europe until 1914. The Blaue Reiter Almanac combines an assembly of short essays with black-and-white reproductions of artwork to offer the reader a glimpse into the methodology, purpose, and essence of this short-lived yet passionate movement. An invaluable addition to modern art history shelves.

Imaginative.......2003-01-21
"Fate Rides Wicked" is a wonderful fantasy with characters, in some ways, not unlike those found in "Lord of the Rings." Unlike most fantasy, it makes the reader think about real life issues mankind has faced throughout eternity. Once into the book, the reader is intrigued not only with the characters and the situations in which they find themselves, but the author's boundless imagination. Once one has read the first book, the next is a must.
Never to old for a fantasy trip!.......2002-12-16
It's been about 20 years since I have read a fantasy novel. It seems the older we get, the more busy we get, and the less time we have. I had an opportunity to spend a few days alone in the Mountains this summer, I chose this book to take along. When I started it I quickly remembered why I enjoyed fantasy reading. The Author takes you where he went right from to beginning, and from there it is one thrilling adventure after another. If you need a short exciting vacation and can't leave home, I highly suggest reading this book. That is certainly what I'm going to do when Jon Biviano's next book comes out.
fatbook.......2002-07-03
I enjoy reading books, but I normally read books closer to 100 paages. I didn't think that it would be able to hold my interest for all 545 pages. It was very interesting. I had a few nights without much sleep because I was reading. I don't happen to read much fantacy. I stick mostly to science fiction and yet I found the story theme easy to follow. I think this book is written in such a way that others like me that read much science fiction could enjoy this book. I am now looking forward to the next book in the series.
A powerful novel about a powerful Character........2002-07-02
This novel contains one of the greatest literary characters that this reviewer has ever read. Tych di Corl is one of the most intriguing and indepth characters you will find in the fantasy genre today. He is also joined by a powerful band of warriors mages and dragons. This is a must read for all lovers of fantasy. Biviano portrays the struggle of young Tych coming to grips with the fact that he is endowed with special powers and strengths. Along with his ancient family heritage Tych learns that he is not only an endaril but a DRAGON as well. Indeed a very interesting proposition and the many things to come from these powers will be well fleshed out throughout the novel. This book also has an expansive cast of characters, from Tychs' loves Lendril, to his enemies, which are many in number. All the while while our hero is finding his place in this world, behind the scenes lurks a much darker plot, that will be built upon in novels to come I am sure. A classic struggle rages in the background, good versus evil, dark versus light, death versus life. The story has battle scenes that will make your senses cloud over in a haze of battle that will leave you feeling as if you yourself had been in the trenches with the many heros and heroines of this book. To miss out on this new novel by Jon Biviano would be a crime, if you are a lover of fantasy, and dragons, do yourself a huge favor. Pick up this book, it will leaving you wanting more in the end, while filling you with suspense and delight all the way through. So grab a copy today, dont miss out because you never know what fate might ride your way if you dont. Lets just hope that it is not wicked.

Hard Ride- Vietnam Gun Trucks Vol.1 (vol.1.)
Manufacturer: PLANET ART
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 9719303719 |
Product Description
This book, written by James Lyles, a former Vietnam gun truck commander, is an authoritative reference on a number of special hybrid vehicles called Vietnam gun trucks and the extraordinary crews who manned them. During their 5 year history from late 1967 thru late 1972, Vietnam gun trucks were without a doubt the most important wheeled vehicles to see duty in Vietnam. They were mainly used for convoy security and installation perimeter defense, but were also used in other roles. It was originally thought that only 150 of these vehicles existed but the book now includes a list of over 350 gun truck names and rare photos of nearly 300 different guntrucks Volume I includes gun trucks and their swasbuckling crews with 80 pages of mostly color photos of regular 2-1/2 ton and 5-ton gun trucks, eyewitness accounts, humorous gun truck related short stories, full sized gun truck scale models. 2002, new copy, paper covers, 8 1/2 x 11, glossy page stock, 80 pages, will illustrated in B& W and color.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding photo reference.......2006-04-11
A must-have for anyone even remotely interested in the ingenuity of American soldiers and troops during the war in Vietnam. Some of these designs are even being used today in Iraq & Afghanistan.
I also have Volume 2, and these two books are invaluable references to not only the gun trucks themselves, but a good history of how our troops did their best to overcome adversity in wartime. Highly recommended for anyone interested in combat resupply and transportation.

AMAZING photographic history of these fine machines.......2005-08-03
This is quite possibly the richest collection of vietnam era photos I have ever seen, let alone collections of gun trucks. Too often in books on the subject of Vietnam you see the same old boring dry "war is hell" photos. This painstakingly assembled collection of everything having to do with gun trucks is well worth the purchase price, and every photo tells a story. Every time I pick it up I lose track of time studying the photos. Practically every single gun truck pic I have seen on the web comes from or is in this book, and in the book it is full color and in much better quality. There's no better book, article, website, etc. on the subject, bar none. You need this book! I am anxiously awaiting volume II

Creative gift for any Shakespeare lover!.......2000-07-20
This is a creative and clever book that would be a perfect gift for a theatre lover. It's the kind of thing people would snap up at the gift shop at The Globe Theatre in London. The split pages allow you to put together almost any wacky combination, and they're a kick to read aloud.
Book Description
Part human, part machine, the cyborg is the hero of an increasingly popular genre of American film and, as Janice H. Rushing and Thomas S. Frentz so provocatively suggest, a cultural icon emblematic of an emergent postmodern mythology. Using the cyborg film as a point of departure, Rushing and Frentz examine how we rework Western myths and initiation rites in the face of new technologies.
Through in-depth examinations of six representative films—Jaws, The Deer Hunter, The Manchurian Candidate, Blade Runner, The Terminator, and Terminator 2—Rushing and Frentz track the narrative's thread from the hunter to his technological nemesis, demonstrating how each film represents an unfolding hunter myth.
For each movie, Rushing and Frentz show how uninitiated male hunters slowly lose control over their weapons. In Jaws, a 'soft' man, dominated by technology, can re-acquire the heroic hunter qualities he needs by teaming up with a 'savage' man and a 'technological' man. In doing so, he can still conquer the prey. The Manchurian Candidate charts how technology can turn a human into a weapon; Blade Runner perfects the artificial human with its manufactured replicants who are "more than human"; and The Terminator introduces a female hunter who leads humanity in its struggle against technology.

More here than immediately meets the eye............2007-02-24
This book can be read and enjoyed on the surface for what it is.....analysis of archetypes of human experience as expressed in the dominant method of 'storytelling' in our present culture-the motion picture.
It's entertaining at that and I recommend it.
It can also be considered, IMO, as a condensed worldview and deep commentary of the deficiencies in our present culture. This is especially true in the case of our weak or nonexistent male rites of passage. Hey, I could be wrong, but I literally felt the lament of the authors that we have given up so much in order to have our present technological culture.
Many times in my life I have also lamented not having a village, wise older men to guide me, and stability from generation to generation. Yah, I looked up at the moon in July '69 and listened on my transistor radio to Neil speaking from the surface.....but we gave up more than most people could ever imagine for these stunts. We gave up our basic humanity. We are not technological beings. We are human beings. Our technology separates us from our humanity. I think the authors sense this.
I haven't the academic background to really understand or "grok" this book. My only criticism is that is presupposes knowledge that many readers , myself included, simply don't have. Mildly well educated I'd have to admit that I don't know what "postmodern" and similar terms mean. The academic jargon is not oppressive, actually kind of quaint and interesting, but detracts for the average reader. And....what will all these words man in a few more decades?
I wish I had not learned of the existence of this book in the obituary of one of the authors in my quarterly university magazine. I think much more and even better would have grown from her mind, extraordinary sensitivity, and off the scale but humble intellect which I still remember back over the gulf of almost forty years.
You did good Janice. I just wish you'd had time to do more. I am glad I read this book and recommend it. By golly time flies.
Book Description
This text systematically develops the aural, vocal, and rhythmic skills of all music majors. Emphasizing analytical thinking over rote drill, the text enriches traditional exercises in singing and dictation with a variety of innovative lessons that enhance individual musical skills.
Customer Reviews:
A solid program to develop important musical skills.......2004-07-06
There are a number of approaches to what is called ear training. Obviously, it is the mind that is trained rather than the ear, but it is called ear training because the aspect of the mind that is being made more acute is the sense of hearing. One of the reasons the most successful methods of ear training use singing is because of way singing connects the passive mode of hearing to an active mode of listening and discrimination; of hearing clearly so one can replicate the sounds heard. The act of notating what one hears is called musical dictation and is a desirable skill in developing musical literacy.
This book, "Listen and Sing", by David Damschroder, is quite good in laying out a program to develop those skills. It begins at a very basic level with simple melodies to sing alone and with fellow students. I like the way Prof. Damschroder emphasizes rhythm as well as pitch and provides many different kinds of exercises to simultaneously develop the ability to hear melodies, repeat them, sing them at sight from notation, look at notation and match what you see with what you hear, linking aspects of functional harmony with the melodic structure, and writing down what you hear.
The book carefully begins with very basic skills, and logically adds complexity so that the skill development seems natural and without a steep learning curve. However, the student must actually practice the exercises in each chapter or they will soon find the demands being added too difficult to fake their way through (unless the student has these skills already - and if so - why are they reading this book or taking the course? Pass out of it already!).
I think the accompanying tapes are a good investment and will aid student practice a great deal. The tapes are a separate purchase and are ISB 0-02-870666-8. The DVDs are not available.
Innovative Ear-training.......2000-07-11
Listen and Sing offers creative exercises to rehearse familiar problems in ear-training for undergraduate core theory courses. The text contains graded musical examples for sight-singing and dictation from historically important common practice repertoire. Thoughtfully designed prepartory exercises, like the Arpeggiation Workshops, lead students step by step to successful dictation skills. Musical complexities are introduced gradually: more unusual keys, difficult rhythmic combinations, and expanded harmonic progressions are meticulously graded and placed throughout the text. The Pedagogy of Listen and Sing is strongly innovative, detailed in its conception, and at may require extra preparation on the part of the instructor.
Listen and Scream.......2000-04-21
This book is a debacle. Take any first or second year college ear training class which uses this book and you will see why.
great book, but the tapes sometimes do more harm than good.......1999-08-14
The book itself is a great learning tool. Not fun, but it gets results. The four tapes, however, while harmonically and melodically accurate, seem to be missing something incredibly important: rhythm. The played examples are characterized by a rhythmic ambiguity that adds nothing but frustration to the experience. Dictation requires accuracy, and in a rhythmic sense there is very little of that here.

Customer Reviews:
Not comprehensive enough and unfortunately outdated on marketplaces.......2007-07-22
The topics suggested by the title (settlement, etc) are well addressed, but the first half of the book is dedicated to marketplaces and here the book comes up short. Many recent market developments, even those that were in place at the time of writing, appear to be inadequately or inaccurately addressed. Examples:
ATSes/ECNs are much more center stage than the book would suggest and are not sufficiently discussed
Hybrid market mechanics are not discussed much
Dark pool liquidity is not addressed
Options market making is not addressed beyond a single paragraph that sheds no light into how Citadel et al make continuous markets electronically
And unfortunately, given that the major development of Reg NMS took place after the book, this makes the marketplace info even less useful.
Excellent.......2007-01-10
I am new to financial industry and I feel it is an excellent book to give a good overview of the concepts.
By the 2nd edition, bloated, unfocused, repetitive of his other books.......2006-11-10
If you own the 2nd edition, or can get a copy of it second hand - that is a much better version. The 3rd edition is very bloated with text from David's other books. Overall, while the text is informative as a reference to the novice, this edition trades crispness for girth, seizing the opportunity to cash in on book sales through a new edition.
A most useful handbook with practical and clear language. For consulting on a broad range of industry topics........2006-08-21
I have always been a fan of handbooks. They always provide practical information about a subject in concise articles that help practitioners (or, in my case, would-be practitioners) get oriented on the vast array of topics in their field. Most of us are expert in narrow areas of information, yet we cannot afford to be ignorant of the broader sweep of the fields in which we work. Handbooks and practical guides help us competently handle those activities that are relevant to our work, but only come up once in awhile or in areas we are just beginning work. This really cool book, `After the Trade is Made" by David Weiss, is ideal for investment professionals, investors, and anyone curious about how the back of the house processes and clears the trades made by the customers and the sales team. I like the way handbooks discuss things in practical and easy to implement language. Theory is great and appropriate for textbooks, but in doing a job you want to know what it is you should and have to do.
The book has fourteen chapters (all made up of smaller named and numbered articles so they can be easily found), but the first three chapters take up the first 199 pages. These three chapters would be great reading for anyone investing in securities and wanting to understand the scope of the industry and its products for themselves. I believe it is much better to be an active learner when placing your hard earned money rather than taking the word of someone whose interests aren't as aligned with yours as you might want to believe.
The first three chapters are: 1) Overview of the Industry, 2) Products that We Offer (this title shows the perspective of the book as investment professionals), and 3) The Marketplaces and Order Management. It is much better for investors to read the language and see things from the perspective of the people trying to sell them various financial instruments rather than sales literature that is designed to entice.
The last ten chapters provide information that people working in the investment industry need to know about the back of the investment house. 4) The Trade Processing System, 5) Margin (an interesting topic), 6) Settlement, 7) Custodial Services, 8) Role of the Banks, 9) Cash Accounting, 10) Brokerage Accounting, 11) Stock Record, 12) General Ledger, 13) Regulatory Reporting, and 14) Conclusion. There is also a very useful glossary and a helpful index.
The chapters get much shorter as the book goes on. In my theory of wanting to know what the guy sitting across the table from me knows when I do business with him (or her), this book is quite helpful. If you take the time to look up those aspects of the trading business that are relevant to your investments you will actually be better off knowing what the people you pay to perform these trades for you have to do. If nothing else, talking about some of these things in conversation with them might make them more attentive to your investments because they will think you know more than most investors (and you will).
Business students (especially in finance) will find the explanations here clear and helpful. I wish I had known about this book and had it available when I as studing for my MBA.
If you are an industry professional, you will instantly understand the utility of a handbook like this and will want this new and revised edition on your shelf in order to consult quickly as issues arise.
Seminal Work on the Securities Backoffice.......2006-04-16
If you need to understand the nuts and bults process of what happens after a trade is made, this is the book for you. A must for those in the industry, in particular, IT developers designing securities software. When I was in the industry, it was my bible.
