Book Description
With so much focus on contemporary theory, it is easy to forget that the serious analysis of clothing and fashion has a long history. In fact, they have been the subject of intense cultural debate since the nineteenth century. Fashion Classics provides an interpretative overview of the groundbreaking and often idiosyncratic writings of eight theorists whose work has profoundly influenced the conceptual and theoretical basis of our contemporary understanding of clothes and the fashion system.Carter fully revives early 'fashion theorists' - some canonical and others less well known - and examines them in light of more recent work. From Carlyle's fantastical character Professor Teufelsdrockh, through the first Freudian analysis of clothes by J.C. Flugel, the pioneering work of Spencer, Veblen, Simmel, Kroeber, Laver and finally Barthes' monumental work on the modern fashion system, this book explores and explains the foundations of fashion theory. Not only does it provide an historical outline of Western conceptions of clothes and fashion, but it also highlights how ideas intermix and build on one another. Carter's lively narrative clearly shows that views on fashion have always been impassioned - perhaps most notably Carlyle's notorious attack on Dandyism and Veblen's suggestion that clothes should be made out of old newspaper. This book also makes sense of complex theory and is essential reading for anyone seeking an overview of the history of fashion theory.

Book Description
The Band of the Hawks' rescue of their leader, Griffith, has brought them no ease. Broken beyond healing, a frail ghost of his former glory, Griffith is now more an object of pity than a man, and the Hawks, who've grimly hung together under duress and death during his absence, are now on the verge of splintering to the winds. But Griffith's dreams and ambitions, built on the bodies of his troops and the countless enemies they have slain, have not gone unnoticed in the spirit realm, and though Griffith has nowhere to go as a man, he may yet have a future . . . a future borne on jet-black wings in the company of the demon lords of the Godhand!

Still one of the best.......2006-11-05
While this may not be one of the most action packed volumes, it is still awesome in the fact that it's one of the key turning points in the story. This is really the issue that sets you up on why Guts does what he's doing when the first issue came out. The artwork is still very detailed, and the dialogue is very well thought out. Enjoy.
Berserk volume 12.......2006-08-29
If you like action all the time or most of the time you will love Berserk, that's all I need to say.
Book Description
Throughout the annals of history, the best of intentions—and sometimes the worst—have set in motion events with a vastly different outcome than originally intended. In this entertaining, fact-filled chronicle, William Forstchen and Bill Fawcett explore the watersheds of history that began as the best of ideas and ended as the worst of fiascoes.
A Holy War—The Medieval Crusades for religious liberation become centuries of slaughter and destruction.
Sibling Rivalry—Leif Erikson spares his sister's life and delays the discovery of the New World for five hundred years.
Big Guns—Emperor Constantine XI refuses to buy a new supercannon that would let him dominate his enemies, so its creator sells the cannon to the Turks, who then crush Constantinople.
With casual wit and subtle insight, It Seemed Like a Good Idea...tucks tongue in cheek and rides out the fiascoes of history.

In Limbo, but still fun.......2004-08-31
Historian/author William Forstchen brings us "It Seemed Like a Good Idea" as a quasi-humorous look at mistaken judgements throughout history. Each chapter is fairly short, and the chunks of history make for great "alternate history speculation" by scholars. However, this book is not fiction. It is also not serious history, as there is a lot more behind each story than Forstchen presents (for instance, "Big Guns" doesn't really point out that the Byzantine Empire was already doomed by a shrinking tax base, the sweeping tide of Islam, and the harm done to the Eastern Empire by the Latinate Dictatorship, the Crusades, etc.).
For serious history, with a readable, well-researched look at REALLY big blunders, the reader might want to move on to Barbara Tuchmann's "The March of Folly," a true classic. For alternate history, Forstchen's own novels are as good an entry point to the genre as any.
It Seemed Like a Good Idea is a hybrid and is sort of in limbo, but is well-written and engageing nonetheless. It's main failing is that it uses 20-20 hindsight and information not available to decision-makers at the time to cast them as idiots. Otherwise, it's a fine read, informative, and well worth your time.
Interesting but a Tad Repetetive.......2003-12-14
I love and have read a number of books of this sort, and while not being a bad example of the short article fact book format, it did tend to get a little repetetive. The three to four page segments are written by different people so some of the pieces tend to overlap with the same information from one segment to the next. Also, I had read most of the "good idea turned bad" information in other books of this type (usually with more conciseness) so there weren't many surprises.
The reading is quick and light and fun, so if you aren't familiar with the "this is what REALLY happened" branch of literature, you may enjoy this quite a bit. Otherwise, I would suggest one stick with broader and more interesting works like "An Underground Education" by Richard Zacks which covers a number of the same points found in this work as well as branching out into many other arenas of human stupidity.
Good read, but . . ........2002-09-01
This is a good book to sit by your bedside to read a short chapter before going to sleep. I like this kind of book format; however, some stories will leave you wondering about the sanity of the very authors themselves. For example, there was a reference that the famous "John Wayne" was an active participant at the Alamo. I read the paragraph in which this occurred several times and decided that the author was just making an intellectual joke . . . but I speculate that the reader 100 or so years from now may think that the author was a complete idiot that only learned history from made-for-tv movies. Another author belittled the human cost of the plague in 1300s Europe by stating that it ONLY affected 3 out of 4 people. You may have purchased the book to discover some history, but you are also discovering something about how people interpret history as well. Although this book is easy reading in a short-story format, maybe the bedside table isn't the right place for it?
Fun and Accurate.......2000-07-17
This book was not only great to read and certainly isn't like history as taught as a dry list of dates and platitudes in too many schools. Nothing in great depth, but hundreds of historical events and facts I didn't know were given me in a way that made them enjoyable. Obviously the book historians create to when they want to have fun. I'd always wondered why the vikings never came back.
Good Easy Read.......2000-06-02
This is a very good easy read. History has been simplified, but this is a wonderful "bathroom book" or "travel book" because most sections aren't more than four or five pages. Don't read this if you want deep historical knowledge, but instead if you want educational easy reading or to know some interesting facts.

Book Description
Whether it’s her sunny disposition, her gift of laughter, her wide-ranging talent, or all three, Judi Dench is loved by both the public and her professional peers. Her very name evokes an admiring response, both for her distinguished theater work and for her many memorable roles in movies like Mrs. Brown, Shakespeare in Love, and Iris, and as “M” in four James Bond films. Darling Judi: A Celebration of Judi Dench is a book of tributes by fellow actors, writers, and people of theater, film, and television, including playwright David Hare, actor Ian Richardson, and Scottish comedian and Mrs. Brown co-star Billy Connolly.

A Celebration of Judi's Acting Career. .......2007-05-13
Those of us who enjoy reading about Judi's life will be a little disappointed, for this book deals mainly with her acting career. Her many friends in the profession have written amusing stories of their contact with her during various stage and film roles, which are quite entertaining and highlight their view of her as an individual.Judi Dench fans will,no doubt, find it quite an enjoyable read and well worth the price.
I Love You, Judi, But..........2007-03-02
Dame Judi Dench is a superbly talented actress and a lovely human being, and she earned every bit of the acclaim sent her way. But in this book, her biographer asked a bunch of associates to write about her, and an endless series of essays oozing with praise gets old fast. I wouldn't even read it if it was DARLING MICHAEL LaROCCA. Sorry.
In praise of Judi.......2006-12-08
This is a charming collection of tiny essays or vignettes, singing the praises of Dame Judi Dench, by her fellow actors, directors and producers. Her co workers have nothing but love and admiration for this lady who apparently is, as she has always appeared to me, a warm friendly, lovable and superbly talented woman. These snippets tell of her love of practical jokes and of upholding certain theatre traditions, some of her own devising, but also of her kindness and lack of "side" to younger and less famous actors. The stories span many years and show that her genuine warmth and humanity has not changed as her fame grew. I love this Dame and am sure that others would love to read this collection of tales as much as I did.
Just Judi!.......2006-08-10
I like Judi Dench and I won't call her Dame Judi because if you want to know this much about her. She's not into Dame Judi this. She writes her name Judi Dench no OBE or CH. I even think she is kind of embarrassed by the title since she got it at 54 years old. Maybe she regrets taking it but regardless she will always be Dame Judi Dench to the crowd but she really is just Dame Judi. Sadly, she is as nice in person as she seems to be. I wrote her twice and she wrote back months later but still somebody with schedule must have better things to do than write her fans. I think Judi is getting the accolades because people in the theater community just love her to death. She acts like a maternal figure to her cast mates and she is lots of fun on the set as well. She has playfulness in the theater and God Bless her because I can't imagine performing the same role with the same lines 8 times a week for any long engagement. I saw Judi Saturday Night performing in Sir Noel Coward's Hay Fever with Peter Bowles and the cast. She works hard at it. That's the key. People respect her because she works hard at creating the illusion. I'm sorry, Judi, but Jay Leno performs the TOnight Show and does 150 performances during the year as a comic whether it's after the Tonight show or on weekends, he works hard just like Judi at being funny. Judi inhabits a character quite the same way. She works hard and works well with theater directors because they have a mutual respect for each other. We'll probably won't see another actress like Judi Dench in our lifetime. She reminds me of my mother, short and that plain beautiful face. When it comes to Shakespeare roles, she nails it there is no doubt about it. Can other actresses do it, definitely, but what separates Judi apart from others is that dedication, loyalty, and determination in making you believe anything on stage. Somehow she doesn't get board and is so skeptical that she will work again that you just want to tell her that she'll be working for the rest of her life. She has become the Peggy Ashcroft of our generation. Sadly, actresses who make their careers on stage will have to do film, television, and act in other ways to survive. Judi had suffer a heartbroken loss and she regrets not having another child. She had a career few of us could only dream of and the talent and drive many of us lack in our passion. Acting is Judi's passion and that's clear but she doesn't have that attitude or ego that so many others possess in this business and maybe that's why she's so nice. She treats everybody with that respect. You just can't imagine her being anybody but Judi and she puts her heart in roles that aren't quite sympathetic like Lady Macbeth for one. oh, we love Judi and yes she is one of the top actresses on stage, television, and film. This book is worth the purchase for any aspiring actor or actress. Unlike some, Judi knows the story or plot briefly. She doesn't read the scripts and she doesn't dig deep unless she is in rehearsal. It's there that she masters her craft in creating the illusion. I was shocked to learn that she has trouble with evil female characters. It's just not in her and that's fine because Judi likes to play people with faults. It's hard to imagine that Judi is her worst critic. She doesn't watch herself. While she aims for perfection in her performance, we can't expect anything less than a hundred percent. Whether's she's doing Shakespeare, Coward, Wilde, or even a sitcom, we can imagine her playing a character that we come to know and love just as much as we love Judi herself.
A light but lovely read........2005-03-13
Essentially a collection of tributes from a wide ranging slice of the actresses peer group, all of whom adore her and admire her skill terribly. I really enjoyed learning a little more about Dame Judi, as famous as her face is, she is afterall still somewhat enigmatic. The writing is varied because of it's shared authorship but as such makes the book more challenging.
This is not a celebratory style that would work for anyone famous, the very fact it focuses on Dame Judi makes it more than tolerable. Had it been other stars it may not have been so easy to take nor to read. But it is lovely, like a few days in the company of Lionel and Jean (As time goes by).

Very Excellent Book for any Violist.......2000-04-18
This has been a very helpful book to me as a violist. The treatise on tone for string playing, at least, is an article that should be read by someone who wants beautiful tone from their playing. It is great to see Mr. Tertis's persistance for the cause of the VIOLA as a solo instrument. -------Viva Viola--------- by the way, I wouldn't mind a Tertis Model Viola myself....

Great looking dolls and dresses.......2006-06-18
This is a beautiful book with beautiful dolls and great clothes patterns. It's a great gift to give a little girl her own doll with its own wardrobe. You could do the doll to look like the little girl and the dresses in her favorite colors. The only thing that I didn't like was the suggestion to varnish the head, neck and hands to make the dolls look antique. This would make the dolls faces hard. I would prefer to leave the dolls natural, or if you really want to antique them, use a gel stain to get the same effect without the stiffness.
Old Fashioned Dolls.......2006-02-14
This book is wonderful, even for a beginner. Great patterns, plus the book is well written, easy to understand language. You can really make a unique doll.
Old Fashion Dolls Are Lovly Dolls.......1999-05-10
This book has simple straight forward instructions. The doll pattern is simple as are the clothes. This book is for the dollmaker who wants a doll that is beautifully old fashion, but doesn't have the time to search for an original vintage doll. The doll is approximatly 18" tall with a wardrobe that contains nightgowns, dresses, pinafores, overskirts, bonnets,a suit, wedding dress and cape with muffs. She even has her own dolly!

OK Book... Just Touches Surface.......2007-10-05
I don't know... I guess I was expecting more from this book. After reading Telesales Tips From The Trenches (Catal) and How To Sell More In Less Time (Sobczak) this was kind of a let down.
excellent teaching book on the process of telephone sales.......2007-09-24
If you do any type of telephone sales this book is great!! I found it to be very easy to read and the examples were just what I deal with in my job. I needed more info on how to sell to "new" prospects and this helped me alot. While I did not necessarily do every exercise, I found the ones I did do to be very informative. I even bought a copy for a co-worker (I didn't want to give mine up!!)
Very helpful and logical way to look at the sales call .......2007-07-04
This book offers a great way to dissect your sales call, identify what's missing (or what's overkill), measure its effectiveness, and improve your strategy. I purchased this book with another "highly rated" telephone sales book after scouring every book regarding tele-sales and telemarketing at my library. This is the best current publication that I have found.
Practical, Actionable and a Great read.......2006-01-03
Now this has practical tips from the trenches and you can tell the author isnt writing about theory but has done it himself. For someone with no experience in the field this is a handson guide with actionable items anyone can do when theyre finished.
Well worth the read if youre into teleselling
A very valuable book.......2005-12-03
I just got this book yesterday and am already more than half way through-it keeps you moving along and wanting to read each following chapter. i have no prior experience in telesales (or any sales) and this book has answered a lot of questions for me already. every time a question comes up, it seems it is answered within the following few chapters. the book is orgainzed very well and i can see how its suggestions will help me when i start my new job. i am very eager to put them to use!
