Customer Reviews:
An excellent source, but not for beginners.......2005-06-03
Julia Sutton is one of the leading Renaissance dance historians, and this work reflects her careful scholarship. However, while "Courtly Dance of the Renaissance" does contain Fabritio Caroso's explanations of steps and choreographies, it is quite difficult to reconstruct dances from these descriptions. There are many ambiguities in the instructions, and since Sutton's goal is to provide an accurate translation rather than an interpretation, she leaves these conundrums intact. Sutton also translates the names of the steps into English, which makes this volume harder to use in conjunction with other Renaissance dance resources, which leave them in Italian. Nevertheless, for those with some grounding in dances of this period, "Courtly Dance of the Renaissance" is a critical source, and the wonderful discussions of etiquette and costume require no prior knowledge to enjoy.
Antique Reproduced.......2004-11-28
This is an actual book from 1600. The ad doesn't quite make that clear. This is not "we look at past history." This IS it as our ancestors would have viewed it.
A person can make sense of this. The steps are taught and there are masses of music sheets.
I am holding the actual material all those elite ladies and gentlemen were taught by.
Wow!
No one especially in America is going to be outdone by the grand people of the past. We're there. I reason it doesn't matter if one is lousy and does it wrong. It's the point of this whole thing. I have read enough to know that "dancing" was about a two year serious undertaking to learn in the past. It'll take about two years one step at a time. This isn't a thin little paper back.
I recommend it but not for the peasants. They can do Darrin's Dance Groves.
A Must Have for the Historical Dance Enthusiast.......2000-06-13
This book is a wonderful reference tool for anyone interested in historical dancing! Translated and Edited by none other than Julia Sutton, this book explains many of the social dances and practices of the aristocrats. It includes the dance steps, an explanation of how they occur, music, and labnotation. This book is truly a must have for anyone with a serious desire to understand dance practices of the times!

Book Description
In Couture Culture, Nancy Troy offers a new model of how art and fashion were linked in the early twentieth century. Focusing on a leader of the French fashion industry, Paul Poiret, Troy uncovers a logic of fashion based on the tension between originality and reproduction that bears directly on art historical issues of the period. This tension lies at the heart of haute couture, which, although designed for the wealthy, was also intended to be adapted for sale in department stores and other clothing outlets that catered to a broader consumer market. Troy examines the relationships between elite and popular culture, the professional theater and the fashion show, as well as the presumed polarity between Orientalist and classical sensibilities. She shows how Poiret and other designers patronized the arts and presented themselves as artists not only to sell their individual dresses to wealthy clients but also to promote the mass production of their designs. The contradictions she uncovers suggest surprising parallels with the readymades and fashion-related work of Marcel Duchamp, who explored the questions of originality and authenticity raised by couture culture during the 1910s and 1920s.
In contrast to dominant accounts of early twentieth-century art that have dismissed fashion as superficial, fleeting, and feminized, Troy's more nuanced approach reveals conceptual structures and marketing strategies shared by modern art and fashion in these years.

Customer Reviews:
Good, but anti-climatic.......2007-09-25
To keep it short I'll just say the ending of this five issue arc was very anti-climatic. Maybe it was befitting of the character (Bont, Alex Bont) and the whole arc to demonstrate the futility of revenge or whatever, but it does not it makie it any less anti-climatic, especially considering it takes four issues (most of it spent on flashbacks) to set up the final showdown. Overall this arc spends a fair amount of time introducing a (run of the mill criminal) character.
There's probably a message in that about how life goes on and no one man's actions can ever make too much of a lasting impression on the world around him, no matter how hard he tries to save it (DD) or destroy it (Kingpins) because they'll always be someone else in the future doing the same thing...
One of the weaker Bendis arcs.
Also this arc introduces a new White tiger, Angela Del Toro (introduced in former issues as a FBI agent), and shows Daredevil "mentoring" her. Well let's just say DD is no Batman and the mentoring is extremely rough and very short. She appears later in the Murdock Papers and her own (bad) mini series.
One of the Best...........2006-03-15
I thought the was one of the best Daredevil arcs on the Bendis/Maleev run with the comic. I thought how the past comes to get Matt Murdock was good. The story is about pride and revenge and redemption which is well done. Bendis and Maleev defined not only Daredevil but Matt Murdock as well. If you are a fan of art as well this had a terrific run covers. The art itself is just terrific. Even if Bendis didn't get his history it shouldn't be held against him. Golden age was my personal favorite Daredevil arc. Buy it. You will not be dissapointed. End.
Great Book.......2005-07-09
Completely explains the entire years before The Kingpin. Filled with human emotions and wonderful writing, I highly recomend this book to any Daredevil fan or comic fan otherwise. Wonderfully done and like all things by Brian Michael Bendis...sure to be a classic!
Another excellent volume in Bendis' Daredevil run.......2005-05-05
At the conclusion of the previous Daredevil volume, the Widow, there was news of the release of a man named Alexander Bont, a man who was the original Kingpin before Wilson Fisk, and a man who also has a connection to Matt Murdock. As Golden Age opens, Matt is partially in his Daredevil costume and chained up, while being beaten by his old reformed nemesis the Gladiator and recorded by Bont himself. As Bendis' story unfolds, he shifts the reader through time; introducing us to a young and power hungary Bont and his first encounter with Daredevil. Now, Bont is out of jail, and looking for revenge and to regain everything he lost because of the horned vigilante, and with word out of Daredevil's identity, Bont sets his sights on Matt. This is a classic crime noir story disguised in a Marvel comic, and if it's one thing that fans know Bendis can do, it's tell a great crime story. Alex Maleev's art gets better and better with each passing issue, and his black and white sections of the story revealing the past between Daredevil and Bont helps make Golden Age simply awesome. Bendis has said that with the next upcoming stories, he is taking DD in a different and more noir-ish direction, and if it's anything like Golden Age, than longtime DD readers may finally find something that rivals Frank Miller's classic Daredevil tales.

A guide to life......Of sorts.......2005-07-15
Joe Bob's best yet Joe Bob tells you his guide to life with the story of a young Brave meeting Iron Joe Bob and his spear. Joe Bob also gives his opinion of everything from Coffie shops to the best way to get "Nookie" Check it out.
Parody- Raised to an Art Form.......2004-07-24
If 'Iron John' was the iconic journey into the masculine, 'Iron Joe Bob' is the journey to the base of the masculine tailbone. Not only is Briggs' parody genuinely funny(whether or not you have read, 'Iron John'), but he does match the original author's work, image for image and metaphor for metaphor. The difference is that rather than working with deep and brooding images, Briggs makes his point(enjoy the pun) using deep and...uh...erect images.
If you took 'Iron John' very seriously, please do put a bit of space between that read and this one. You need to retreat briefly from the woods in order to recapture your sense of humor. No, we are not laughing at you, we're laughing with you. Once you can use your drum to set your beer on and start a fire with your corn-nut breath, you are ready to take on 'Iron Joe Bob.' Pick up your Wooly Spear and get to work.
The book is an entertaining and surprisingly literary read, rife with classic devices and characters that we have all met on our various journeys. Briggs uses them, familiar scenarios and skillful wit to hone his point again and again.
Enjoy the forest.
Slay Your Inner Weenie !.......2003-03-17
Our greatest living scholar researches a voluminous amount of technical and arcane texts-- Robert Graves's "The White Goddess", including the footnotes in Welsh, being a case in point---and concludes that our only hope to recover our Ancient Missing Spear and become authentic men, is to worship the One Great Breasted Earth Mother.
( Which in his fantasies, for reasons that he'd rather not dwell upon, is named Monique.)
Lovingly dedicated to "Bobby Bly" this book is the REAL story of "The Men's Movement" !
How thousands of milksops, sissies, jellyfish, doormats, Star Trek re-run addicts living in their parent's basements, 99lb weaklings and other assorted [people] have "Slayed Their Inner Weenies " by gettting in touch with their Missing Spear through yelling, drum beating, ripping their shirts off, and other toxic-freeing ceremonies at one of Joe Bob's legendary "I'M NOT A WIMP, GOLDANG IT!" weekends.
...Re-discovering Indigenous Manhood Initiatory Rituals (i.e; "Get a Job " Chapter 23) Joe Bob takes us on a mythically charged journey of self discovery through cosmic archetypes hitherto never explored.
Five stars are not enough.

Customer Reviews:
I have it!.......2000-11-08
I feel very fortunate to have this book as it is now out of print. I bought it in 1993 at a book store and just ran into it on a whim. I enjoyed the book as it had a lot of information about Reba and her journey through life so far. Up to this point I have every book that has been written about her and find this one to be very informative.
She is "The Queen of Country".......2000-08-08
Luckily for me, my husband found a copy of this book in perfect condition at a used book store. I cried while reading it. They were both tears of happiness and tears of sadness. The book talks about her life as a young woman followed by her start in Nashville all the way through to her darkest moment when her crew's plane went down. It also goes into some of the acting she did in the 1990's. I truly enjoyed this book. If you are a Reba fan, it is a MUST have. Enjoy!

I love the book becuse I love Reba McEntire
An interesting read!.......1998-02-15
If you can't get enough of Reba you'll enjoy this book. Mr. Cusic gets his information from people who know her well, and most of the events discribed agree with her autobiography, "Reba:My Story" ( read it first!). If you get the chance to read this ,do, just keep in mind Reba didn't authorize this so some things may be a little exaggerated. If you're not a fan already reading her story will make you one!

Book Description
PowerNomics: The National Plan to Empower Black America is a five-year plan to make Black America a prosperous and empowered race that is self-sufficient and competitive as a group by the year 2005. In this book, Dr. Anderson obliterates the myths and illusions of black progress and brings together data and information from many different sources to construct a framework for solutions to the dilemma of Black America. In PowerNomics: The National Plan, Dr. Anderson proposes new principles, strategies and concepts that show blacks a new way to see, think, and behave in race matters. The new mind set prepares blacks to take strategic steps to create a new reality for their race. It offers guidance to others who support blacks self-sufficiency. In this book, Dr. Anderson offers insightful analysis and action steps blacks can take to redesign core areas of life - Education, Economics, Politics and Religion - to better benefit their race. The action steps in each area require new empowerment tools that Dr. Anderson presents - a new group vision and a new culture of empowerment - tools designed to counter, if not break many of the racial monopolies in society. Vertical integration and Industrializing black communities are other major concepts and strategies that he presents in the book. He places a great deal of importance on building industries in black communities that are constructed upon group competitive advantages. A the same time he announced the release of PowerNomics: The National Plan, he also announced that he has established several models of the strategies he proposes in the book. PowerNomics: The Plan, is infused with Dr. Anderson's trademark creative thinking and answers questions such as: - Why are blacks the only group that equates success with working in a White corporation, government or the entertainment industry? - How did power and wealth - businesses, resources, privileges, income and control of all levels of government get so disproportionately distributed into the hands of White society?
- Industrialization brings many economic benefits to the geographic locations where it occurs. Why has Black America never been industrialized and how can it be done? - Why do visible blacks and black leaders avoid blackness, identifying the focus of their work instead for people of color, minorities, women, gays , the poor, Hispanics, and other immigrant groups? - What enables a constant stream of immigrant groups to politically, economically and socially dominate blacks? - In politics, how is it that blacks can be monolithic and loyal political supporters yet their group receives no quid pro quo benefits? - In his first book, Black Labor, White Wealth, Dr. Anderson examined history and showed how racism has locked and boxed blacks into a near permanent underclass. Picking up where Black Labor, White Wealth left off, PowerNomics: The National Plan is the missing link between the historical analysis of problems facing blacks and the strategies needed to correct those problems. Dr. Anderson's books are a phenomenon in the publishing industry. His work is distinguished because he has turned books that are serious, non-fiction, and heavy on black history, into best-sellers. PowerNomics: The National Plan continues that pattern. It is an astounding work.

Release The Power.......2006-07-10
PowerNomics should be required reading for every African American book club, community organization, church, and family. The book embodies tenents set forth from Marcus Garvey to Elijah Muhammed to DuBois and Washington. If you believe that "God helps those who help themselves," PowerNomics is an action plan to achieve self-sufficiency.
This is truly Black America's second Bible.......2006-05-24
Before I read this book, I had not one clue how bad we as African Americans had it. This book truly opened my eyes. The statistics that were presented would make Dr. King literally cry. We have gotten so far behind other nationalities that it is literally pathetic. Claud Anderson's vision if implemented can really change the course that us as Blacks are on. This book should be in every Black American's household.
Live on your feet or die on your knees.......2005-10-15
Mr. Andersons' book provides a thorough examination, diagnosis, and best possible cure for what ails black america. Not poor whites, hispanics, arabs, jews, gays, or white women. You owe it to you and your family to at least check out the facts of this examination and then decide.
White america has always put their modus operandi in our face; this is our society, these are our rules, do the best you can with what we decide to give you; don't bother me while I make my money. If you do, the police will handle you.
Here is Black americas' call to focus on what should have been the legacy of civil rights - economic empowerment.
Economic common sense!!.......2005-04-10
A continuation of Black labor White wealth, this account is a program of action for those interested with the implimentaion of the economic model based on Powernomics and the fascinating industries available for exploitation within certain communities. Additionally this addition has updated stats and excellent examples of programs designed to help control-preserve community economic development and culture as well as history...to protect communities from outsiders with their own interests thru ethno-aggregation and consolidation urban communities can learn to impliment basic protective procedures. Fascinating far reaching analysis, that should be of interest for those areas facing population displacement thru gentrification. If developed properly this Powerenomics plan can serve areas well into the next century and beyond.
This book has changed my life........2004-10-29
I have been a self-proclaimed conscious person for 5 years now.
I began with reading black history studying ancient african civilizations and traditions. When I found out about Ancient Kemit and Kush and the African connection to the Hebrews I honestly believed that the major problem we had in this country was lack of self-knowledge. Even though I still beleive that to be a major issue, I know now that the force that keeps us down is ignorance of a different type. It is the ignorance of how a Democratic Capitalist system truly works that keeps us at the bottom. It was and is the ignorance of our past and present leaders who push and promote intergration when it's obvious it has failed us. And finally it is each and every black individuals ignorance when he moves out of a black community when they become middle class, diluting our voting and economic base. But now i have no excuses I now know what is going on around me. If you want to know buy this book.
