Book Description
Do killers, artists, and terrorists need one another? In Crimes of Art and Terror, Frank Lentricchia and Jody McAuliffe explore the disturbing adjacency of literary creativity to violence and even political terror. Lentricchia and McAuliffe begin by anchoring their penetrating discussions in the events of 9/11 and the scandal provoked by composer Karlheinz Stockhausen's reference to the destruction of the World Trade Center as a great work of art, and they go on to show how political extremism and avant-garde artistic movements have fed upon each other for at least two centuries.
Crimes of Art and Terror reveals how the desire beneath many romantic literary visions is that of a terrifying awakening that would undo the West's economic and cultural order. This is also the desire, of course, of what is called terrorism. As the authority of writers and artists recedes, it is criminals and terrorists, Lentricchia and McAuliffe suggest, who inherit this romantic, destructive tradition. Moving freely between the realms of high and popular culture, and fictional and actual criminals, the authors describe a web of impulses that catches an unnerving spirit.
Lentricchia and McAuliffe's unorthodox approach pairs Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment with Martin Scorsese's King of Comedy and connects the real-life Unabomber to the surrealist Joseph Cornell and to the hero of Bret Easton Ellis's bestselling novel American Psycho. They evoke a desperate culture of art through thematic dialogues among authors and filmmakers as varied as Don DeLillo, Joseph Conrad, Francis Ford Coppola, Jean Genet, Frederick Douglass, Hermann Melville, and J. M. Synge, among others. And they conclude provocatively with an imagined conversation between Heinrich von Kleist and Mohamed Atta. The result is a brilliant and unflinching reckoning with the perilous proximity of the impulse to create transgressive art and the impulse to commit violence.

Mostly literary criticism applied to the current situation.......2004-12-20
CRIMES OF ART AND TERROR (2003) from The University of Chicago Press has a definite point of view in which the feelings of writers are often treated as being more important than society as it is, for writers are pictured as desiring a great change that can only be accomplished by violating society's norms. Early in the book, society is given the opportunity to assert its own preferences against Karlheinz Stockhausen, an opera composer who has used a Lucifer character regularly in a series of seven operas. A four-day concert festival was cancelled in Hamburg after comments Stockhausen made on the events of September 11, 2001, based on early reports. He was inspired by the idea that "people practice like crazy for ten years, totally fanatically for a concert, and then die." (p. 6). "You have people so concentrated on one performance, and then 5,000 people are dispatched into eternity, in a single moment." (p. 7).
The second chapter compares the aims of William Wordsworth, The Unabomber, and Don DeLillo. In the third chapter, the relationship between Norman Mailer and author killer Jack Henry Abbott is explained by passages from Fyodor Dostoevsky's CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, Martin Scorsese's movie, `The King of Comedy,' and Bret Easton Ellis's character Patrick Bateman in the novel AMERICAN PSYCHO. I am not familiar with the details of the following chapters, but Chapter 7 is called "The Last Maniacal Folly of Heinrich Von Kleist (A Fiction)." (pp. 148-165). A Short Bibliography lists works with ideas that have contributed to each of the seven chapters. Then Works Cited (pp. 173-175) includes a web page for Karlheinz Stockhausen. The index (pp. 179-187) includes the designation "mentioned" under Wordsworth for three pages where his name merely appears. Dostoevsky also has two pages listed for "mentioned." T. S. Eliot takes 5 lines in the index, with only one page designated "mentioned." This kind of index is valuable for readers who often wish to locate what they previously read and check the relevance of offhanded comments.
My interest in the book was mainly due to its look at Theodore John Kaczynski, the Unabomber, who is definitely both a writer and a criminal in a way that relates to the theme of this book. Offhandedly, Ted's manifesto is subject to comments that illustrate a mentality that is ultimately individual:
`Under normal grammatical conditions, as opposed to the conditions of Unabomber grammar, it is not possible to say that "civilization" is "criminal."' (p. 78).
Ted was willing to plead guilty to avoid a trial that would seek the death penalty because he did not want to claim insanity to avoid punishment. The defense team of lawyers had taken steps to substantiate insanity, but the preliminary issue of how competent Ted was to act in his own defense kept the trial from proceeding smoothly to a determination of that issue. Thus I vaguely disagree with the assertion in this book that "Like the Unabomber, Raskolnikov is tried on an insanity defense because the world cannot accept the actions of such terrorists as rational." (p. 49). I used to have an editorial cartoon on my wall in which lawyers behind Ted's back were making loony bin gestures while Ted was trying to protect all his Constitutional rights and the judge was trying to decipher the confusion about who was representing Ted's best interests. Ted was going to be tried on the contents of his diary, which was written in a code that was found in his cabin, and the pleasure he finally displayed in being able to admit that he was the author of the Unabomber manifesto ought to balance the displeasure of those sentenced to years in prison for illegal substances that messed up their minds in ways that illustrate the concept of transgressive desire as much as this book does.

Book Description
From January 2005, the Saatchi Gallery, London, will hold an exhibition devoted entirely to painting, opening with works by some of the most influential European artists of our time, followed by works of a newer generation.
The Triumph of Painting marks this project and should stand as the definitive book of current art.
Customer Reviews:
Triumph of what?.......2006-07-11
This volume presents a few great paintings.
But, ONLY A FEW.
So, how do we justify the Grand Title, "Triumph Of Painting"?
Great book on new painting - some are missing.......2006-01-30
I enjoyed this great book on painting. It misses a few greats like Neo Rauch but overall it's well worth the purchase.
More of Interest than Interesting.......2005-12-28
The Saatchi Gallery remains a potent force in the art world, literally defining the rapidly changing trends in art within a matter of months (and that is transient!). This hefty book shares with those who are unable to visit this exhibition the works of five artists Saatchi Gallery considers to be the avant-garde of art today.
The artists include Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Luc Tuymans, Jorg Immendorff and Martin Kippenberger among the fifty six artists in the year long exhibition. While many of the artists are known some are less well known and for a reason (!). The collection is not exciting nor particularly daring. Most of the imagery is suggestive of representation and of those mostly the figure dominates with varying degrees of success.
Catalogues of this sort feel more like promotional materials for a commercial gallery than documents on the state of art today. The reproductions are fine: it is the content that becomes almost wearing. There is no doubt that Charles Saatchi has been a significant mover in contemporary art from his stance in London. But this particular collection from his stable fails to catch fire. Grady Harp, December 05
painting today?.......2005-10-23
This book can not be called a owerview of painting today. With mainly photos and lacking in words it creates a posibble line of todays painting. Its value though is mainly in reproductions whicha are of finest quality.
It's a good book.......2005-07-19
Just like I like it - more pictures than words. For once in my life, though, I would like to have seen more text included, especially more about the artists. Nice format, high quality images.

The final months of war in Japan.......2005-02-18
In this book, Adolf Kaufmann, a half German half Japanese teen raised in Japan but educated in Germany returns to Japan. He has been gone for three years and has not been able to contact anyone in Japan for the past two years. He is overjoyed to be reunited with his childhood best-friend Adolf Kamil, a German Jew taking political refuge in Japan. The mood changes quickly, however, since in the past three years non-Jewish Adolf has come to follow the Nazi party beliefs including understanding Mein Kampf.
Non-Jewish Adolf's mission in Germany is to find the documents that show that Hitler has Jewish ancestry. (By now everyone but Adolf realizes that the documents don't mean much and that the war is nearly over.) Adolf has also been assigned to kill a certain Japanese man, who has been hiding the documents. Adolf is shocked to find that his mother has remarried, and to the very man he has been ordered to kill. So that pretty much does it for Adolf's relationships with friends and family back in Japan.
This book follows the Adolfs and Toge, the narrator, through the last few months of WWII and then through their lives after the war, particularly what happens to the two Adolfs. So many minor subplots from other books are resolved here, but won't be distracting if you haven't read other books in the series. This book stands alone well, and will also add more to the story if you have read the other books.
This is a really great amazing series. I recommend it. These are violent books and this one in particular, with a rape, mass executions and plenty of blood gore and violence. So be aware of that and don't give it to a small child to teach them history.
A fitting end to a brilliant series.......2004-06-19
Osamu Tezuka's, "Adolf: 1945 and All that Remains," is the end volume to the epic and sweeping 5 volume 'Adolf' series. While the quality of the series has been excellent throughout, Vol. 5 is truly the hallmark of the series with excellent writing, artwork and the satisfying closure to every single one of the myraid subplots weaved throughout the series.
If you haven't read this series yet do yourself a favor by starting from the beginning and working your way through each of the 4 volumes till you reach this book. Trust me, the journey will be worth it!
The Final Installment of "Adolf" May Be The Best.......1999-02-15
Mere words cannot describe this tragic tale of three men named "Adolf".
The late Osamu Tezuka is brilliant. The artwork is phenomenal. The manga style and the expressions of the characters is unique.
The series is about how World War II effected EVERYONE- from the leaders to ordinary citizens who just want to live. The five books tackle racism, hatred, nationalism, love, family, and duty.
This last book of the series is a culmination of a great work with pop culture historical significance.
This series is similiar to Art Spiegelman's MAUS, but with a different twist. First of all, the art is manga-style (which I personally like better). Also, there are more characters in ADOLF. ADOLF is a tale from the Japanese perspective, while MAUS is a "survivor's tale". But I degress, it was not my intention to compare the two works. If you liked MAUS, you will like ADOLF.
The final installment is very emotional. A fitting end to such a thought provoking and heart-renching series.
A MUST read... a significant piece of cultural work.......1998-07-22
This volume represents the culmination in Tezuka's 5 volume opus. A work which makes connections between the shoah and the bombing of Hiroshima, between racisms of all kinds, it is a breathtaking, tragic, and challenging piece of artistry -- perhaps the best pop culture work on the linked issues of the Holocaust and World War 2.

Shortly after his defeat in the 1996 U.S. presidential election, Republican Bob Dole was invited to appear on David Letterman's Late Show. Letterman asked Dole about President Clinton's weight, but Dole wasn't taking the bait. "I never tried to lift him," he retorted. "I just tried to beat him." That was the first time many Americans got to see a side of Bob Dole rarely revealed to the public during his 36 years on Capitol Hill--the dry, wicked sense of humor that quickly became a defining characteristic of his postpolitical career.
Great Political Wit collects some of Bob Dole's favorite humorous anecdotes about American politicians--and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who gets most of the handful of truly savage putdowns. (Told by one female member of the House of Commons that he was drunk, Churchill replied, "You're ugly, and tomorrow morning I'll be sober, but you'll still be ugly.") If you like the "Laughter Is the Best Medicine" section of Reader's Digest, the stories about pols like Ronald Reagan, Tip O'Neill, and Woodrow Wilson are sure to make you smile. This reviewer's candidate for the funniest American president, though, would have to be Calvin Coolidge, especially after reading about the time that, at a ceremony for the laying of a cornerstone, Coolidge turned over a spadeful of dirt and then fell silent. Prompted by the master of ceremonies to say something, Coolidge looked down at the ground and remarked, "That's a fine fish worm." --Ron Hogan
Book Description
Bob Dole's political career may not have taken him to the White House, but he did pick up some great stories along the way. In this delightful collection, the longtime United States senator shares his favorite anecdotes, witticisms, and reminiscences.
From the campaign trail to the Oval Office, from smoke-filled rooms to the chambers of the Capitol, Bob Dole surveys a century of political wit. There are bon mots from Calvin Coolidge, Winston Churchill, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and a host of other political figures. Bob Dole introduces each section with mirthful moments from his own experience, displaying the gift for wry humor that has made him a favorite guest on late-night talk shows.
A jovial--and completely bipartisan--compendium,
Great Political Wit is a connoisseur's selection of political repartee at its best.
Download Description
Bob Dole may have lost the 1996 presidential election, but he has since won the hearts of Americans with his endearing and uproarious appearances on "Late Night with David Letterman, " "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, " and even "Saturday Night Live." "Great Political Wit of the 20th Century" is his handpicked collection of some of the funniest remarks tossed off by, and about, the political figures of this century.

A trace of history and a tinge of humor.......2007-08-26
I wasn't sure if the title of this little book was intended to imply that the author, Bob Dole, laughed, or almost laughed, as he almost became President of the United States or that the book, itself, was intended to be almost funny. I hoped for the latter and found that to be true. That's not to say that the book wasn't interesting, but taken out of context most of the quotes seemed to fall a little flat. To me, it was like reading a book of the 1000 funniest jokes. If you have ever attempted it, you likely found, as I did, that few, if any, struck you as funny. What was missing was the context, the spontaneity, and especially the teller -- the Bob Hope, the Robin Williams, your best friend, or your drinking companion.
But, if you read this book closely, you will find that it sheds some light on our nation's political history, at least since Thomas Jefferson's time, and reveals that politicians and the reporting media haven't changed much over the years.
So, if you are interested in politics/politicians and are looking for a book with a trace of history and tinge of humor, you might find this one to be to your liking. As for myself, I particularly enjoyed the sage observations of Ronald Reagan and the wit and humor of Winston Churchill and that great humorist, Calvin Coolidge. Brevity, as they say, is the soul of wit. But, in my view, true wit is the ability to capture concisely the essence of a situation and express the truth of it in a humorous or meaningful way. And no one was better at doing that than Ronald Reagan. Fortunately, this little book is replete with many his witty pronouncements.
Funny stuff from a fabulous person.......2007-07-20
Bob Dole is a very funny guy. He has seen and done so much and is able to laugh about so many great things.
Funny stuff! Completely bipartisan........2006-10-02
I received this as a gift from my stepmother -- an autographed copy! In this completely bipartisan volume, former Senator and Vice-Presidential and Presidential candidate Bob Dole has compiled a collection of his favorite quotes from politicians and those around them -- with great success.
There are quotes about every aspect of politics -- public speaking, religion, the economy, war, the vice-presidency, losing, etc -- from American history's wittiest politicians such as Calvin Coolidge and Ronald Reagan. There's a final section full of late-night TV show jokes made about Bob Dole.
There's little more to say about this book -- it is what it is, and it succeeds in its purpose.
A real treat for any lover of political humor!
A book to enjoy front to back or for just dipping into.......2003-12-08
This is a very enjoyable book. Bob Dole has a fine sense of humor and has selected witty sayings by politicians on a variety of topics in a range of situations. Senator Dole has organized them topically and I found all of them funny and many of them hilarious. A few are even worth committing to memory.
It isn't a long book, but it offers a lot of great stories. What is even better is that Mr. Dole shares his own knowledge of some of the people he quotes in the book and of the institutions in Washington that he knows so well. It is a book you can enjoy reading from front to back or just dipping into briefly again and again.
A word to speakers who would use the anecdotes from this book: be careful. I remember when this book first came out and politicians everywhere were quoting this or that story from it and it was a bit embarrassing to hear. This kind of humor is something that has to be used with a delicate touch and with the best style and timing. You can't just say the words and expect the big laugh. It just doesn't work that way. I always enjoyed Senator Dole's sense of humor and he could pull it off with a bit of an acerbic touch. Some folks didn't like that spice, but I always did.
Great political wit, old and new.......2003-09-06
Bob Dole has penned a charming little book here. Political humor may seem lacking in today's age of attack and sound bite --the Senator shows otherwise with wit old and new alike.
This book is a must-have for any aspiring public speaker. It is choke full of material to use in openers or comebacks. It also reminds one of the consistently great wit of Senator Dole himself -- a fact obscured by the somewhat grouchy persona generated for him by the media.
Were it to be updated anytime soon, I'd have to recommend a line spoken by California Gubernatorial Recall candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger after being pelted by an egg while wading through a crowd, "That man owes me bacon, there's no two ways about it!"
Customer Reviews:
Updated Edition is Significantly Different.......2003-09-05
This book has been in print consistently since the 1980's and has been a treasure-trove of information about the Duke and his films. It not only tells the behind the scenes stories of Wayne's best films, but doesn't avoid a fun-filled look at his "turkeys" as well, even if you don't agree with the author on every title. (I can't help liking "Hellfighters" no matter what the author says!) Each film is broken down in it's own separate section and there are hundreds of rare photos. The recently released edition finally updates a lot of outdated information. For example, there is a very in-depth look at the making of Wayne's "The Alamo"... this section brings up to date the fact that much of the missing footage has been found and restored. Best of all, the new edition has tons of glossy color photos featuring dozens of rare Wayne international movie posters from over the decades. There are also sections relating to Wayne collectibles, record albums and a funny section that shows "bloopers" in Wayne movie posters and ads. (To promote the movie "Cahill: U.S Marshall", Warner Brothers used a well-known photo from "Chisum" in their ads). All in all, even you have the previous version, this one is worth picking up for all the new material.
Outstanding!.......1999-10-19
This book was just outstanding. I think any John Wayne fan who likes to read or learn anything, about The Duke will enjoy and value this book.

Book Description
Baroque composer George Frideric Handel easily ranks among the world's greatest composers. The first edition of this research guide on Handel appeared in 1988; since that time a great deal of scholarly work has been published on Handel and related areas, including the discovery of a hitherto unknown work. New general resources such as the New Grove Dictionary of Opera (1992), electronic resources such as the RISM libretto catalogue online, and the study of Handel's continuing popularity as evidenced by the new Handel House Museum in London and Handel practice around the world (e.g., Messiah and millennium celebrations in Tonga, singalong Messiahs etc.) are incorporated into this revised edition of the Handel guide.

I've been cross-stitching for many years, and this is a wonderfull book to practice and to develop skills. All the photographs are beautifully done, and everything is explained in detail. The graphs are detailed and there is more than just the DMC yarn to choose from (but why do it?) It even has a small index at the end for supplies and other sundries.

I love this book!.......2006-05-07
I have had this book for several years now. There are at least 10 projects in it that I plan to do. It has four Teresa Wentzler patterns in it - including her Fruit Bell Pull. Some of the other designers include Cathy Livingston, Linda Jary, Angela Pullen, and Charlotte Holder. The projects are some of the best projects published in the best-selling magazine.

It is a complete guide to start your own business, specially when you are first time. It covers all the steps in the process from finding out what kind of business to complete a real business plan. It also analyse buying an existing business or a franchise. Excellent book.
A Must-Read for the New Entrepreneur.......2006-11-20
This book is a great starting point for the first-time entrepreneur; it is informative and motivating for one who has toyed with the idea of starting a business, but lacks the experience to know where to begin in his journey. Dr. Harper helps the reader to re-evaluate his or her plans to avoid failure in the future.
Pretty good intro to starting a business.......2005-12-27
This book is a good summary of the more technical aspects of starting a business. It doesn't dig into economics or financial issues too deeply so just reading this book isn't going to make you an expert. But, I think the general steps to starting a business are laid-out pretty well and that this book has a lot of value for someone looking for direction. One thing I would have liked to see in this book was a concise summary of all the steps involved so that when it is time to refer back to this book after reading it, you're not digging through the details and examples.
So far it has been very informational........2005-09-11
I have not read the whole book yet but from what I have read it has been very informational. There are a lot of good tips and things that I had not even thought about. I think I got what I paid for.
Eye Opening!.......2002-11-21
I would highly recommend picking up this book to anyone contemplating opening a small business or maybe struggling with an existing one. It is an easy read and reminds you of the common pitfalls, at the same time motivating for success...
