Book Description
Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922) is widely credited as the dealer who "made" the professional careers of Renoir, Degas, Manet, Monet, Sisley, Pissarro, Puvis de Chavannes, and other painters of fin-de-siècle Paris. Driven by the conviction that the work of the Impressionists was an artistic revelation, he led the fight against critical opinion and brought these artists to the public. His event-filled life is the subject of this absorbing biography.
Durand-Ruel risked his name, his fortune, and his family's future to become the outspoken champion of Impressionism, an art form that in France provoked only insults. By 1900 his gallery dominated the international market for Impressionism, and he had inspired a new generation of collectors, from merchant princes of Moscow to steel barons of Pittsburgh. This volume, deftly crafted from unpublished documents and letters, and illustrated with 40 black-and-white images, is an important addition to our understanding of Impressionism and collecting, as well as a dazzling tour of French and American art and cultural politics in the years before World War I. AUTHOR BIO: Pierre Assouline is one of France's leading historians and biographers. His many books include An Artful Life: A Biography of D. H. Kahnweiler.

Schreier transports the reader through seven decades of Hollywood film in chapters exploring such themes as "working women" good and bad, the influence of French couture on Hollywood costume design, and star-power accessories like cigarettes and furs.
Schreier shares true stories gleaned from research and rare personal interviews with such movie industry insiders as costume designer Edith Head, screenwriter Elmore Leonard, and Madonna, among others.
A highly entertaining raid on Hollywood's closets, Hollywood Dressed and Undressed is a must for film buffs, fashion cognoscenti, and devotees of American pop culture.

Fine pictorial overview of Hollywood fashion.......2000-06-09
As someone who's interested in fashion history (and who runs awebsite dedicated to the role of opera gloves in the history offashion and the movies, I found this book an excellent visual introduction to the importance of fashion in Hollywood. The writing is snappy and breezy, and the pictures (which, after all, *is* why you're buying this book - isn't it?) are gorgeous. Truth in packaging compels me to reveal that I read this book at my local library, but it's definitely on my wish list! END
GREAT STORIES AND PHOTOS.......1999-09-13
I AM A HOLLYWOOD NUT. . .I love everything about the movies. At last, here is a new twist, by an author who seems to love the movies as much as I do. Thanks, Sandy.
Great photos with informative and entertaining stories.......1999-08-13
I purchased a copy of this book because so many of my favorite actors were shown in great photos. I started reading the captions and chuckled at the quick quips and short anecdotes. I ended up buying more copies as gifts. This book has turned out to be one of the best books I have ever given. I hope others will get it for their library. It's not only for movie buffs, but the great photos and stories make a fun afternoon read.
If you love Hollywood -- you'll love this book!.......1999-08-12
I have seen Ms. Schreier on the A&E Channel on several occasions over the last few months discussing hollywood fashion in the movies -- she always provides so many great inside tidbits that I had to go and buy this book. The book did not disappoint! As a 40 year lover of the movies -- I found her stories enlightening as well as very entertaining. I can't wait for the sequel!
The Enquirer seems reputable compared to this drivel........1999-01-18
Again, someone who is relying on old outdated myths and legend has written a book for sensationalism. Shreier's treatment of Clara Bow and Marion Davies is shameful to say the least considering all the facts that have been unearthed in recent years regarding both ladies. Bow triumphed at Fox with her two final films, and it was HER OWN idea to retire to Nevada with her rancher husband Rex Bell; Fox begged Clara to stay. Davies was one of the most gifted and well loved clowns of her era. She is accumulating a wealth of latter day fans who are discovering this fact. While stifled under some of the more lofty productions hoisted on her by Hearst, Marion was brilliantly funny in many films and also retired (as many of the leading ladies did at the time) when she hit 40. If you pick up this book, please read Shreier like Mother Goose, either way it's all fantasy. Let's try to find the real facts when proposing to talk about other peoples lives.
Book Description
Giant events, earth-shaking themes, complex issues . . . all of these can make for captivating cartoons. But it's the artist who can take the simple, keep it simple, and still tell a story who really stands apart from the crowd. Patrick McDonnell, creator of Mutt's Mooch the cat and Earl the dog, is such a cartoonist. The quickest way to absorb McDonnell's mastery of his art is to pick up this third Mutts treasury, in which frame after frame and strip after strip he consistently displays his wit, cleverness, and ability with a pen. Mutts is the perfect way to escape into what appears to be an easygoing, carefree world. But just beneath the character's banter and endearing mannerisms are the universal concerns of animals and people alike. The cartoonist's spare style and gentle humor invite readers to fill out the frames with their own imaginations.Mutts, syndicated by King Features since 1994, enjoys a circulation of more than 500 daily newspapers. Nationally McDonnell has received awards ranging from Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year to Newspaper Comic Strip of the Year, and worldwide he has received such praise as being named the Swedish Academy of Comic Art's Best International Comic Strip Artist. This strip's a winner the world around.

Again and again, Patrick McDonnell demonstrates that he's the most inspired cartoon artist on the planet. For 10 years we've been treated to the adventures of Mooch, Earl, and all the elements, mundane or complicated, animal-vegetable-mineral, of their world. "Sunday Afternoons" is yet another treasure. As writer and critic Glen David Gold wrote in the Los Angeles Times, McDonnell gives us a "daily dose of brilliance." A shameless plug: If you love "Mutts" then be sure to check out the official Mutts website, www.muttscomics.com. More brilliance awaits you there.

Book Description
Since 1984, Chinese cinema has been the most dramatic entry onto the international film scene. China into Film is the first book to look at contemporary Chinese cinema as a visual art and to illustrate the ways in which it has been shaped by centuries of Chinese tradition. Jerome Silbergeld looks at the significance of gender roles, the strategies of film-makers in coping with state censorship, the translation of novels into films, the continuing attachment of film-makers to melodrama, and cinematic critiques of Maoism and post-Maoist culture.Abundantly illustrated with Chinese paintings as well as scenes from such internationally acclaimed films as Yellow Earth, Red Sorghum, Raise the Red Lantern and Farewell My Concubine, China into Film reveals a cinematic form at once excitingly new and deeply imbedded in traditional Chinese visual culture.
Customer Reviews:
the real thing.......2002-02-05
Maybe the blurry photos in this book tell the whole story about it. They're not nice, crisp, fake publicity photos sold by studios that never appear in the real films. They are blurry because (I guess) they come from real (blurry) Chinese films. No other book about Chinese film does this, but this book is about how Chinese films really look, and why (use a fake photo and how can you write honestly about how "the film" looks?). It is not a fashionable polemic. It is not about technical matters like lighting and film economics. Instead, it is about Chinese culture, Chinese artistic traditions (how new films fits into old visual patterns), and the politics of film makers getting around the Chinese censor. It isn't about the most popular films but uses films that seem best to illustrate important themes. It's not a light read and it's not journalistic film "criticism" -- but it makes you think about the subject and teaches a different way to really understand Chinese cinema and its place in Chinese culture today.
good analyses, poor quality stills.......2001-06-28
The author provides an art historic analysis of some of the most influential films in Chinese cinema between 1984 and 1997. The analyses draw not only from the films themselves but also from both contemporary political contexts and historical treatments of the subject matters. The latter illustrated with traditional arts reproduced in the book.
Despite the author's qualifying statements on his selection of films to cover and that he has not "sought unnecessarily to establish a new canon," I'm nevertheless left wondering why he has chosen not to mention notable films like Zhang Yimou's "To Live" and Tian Zhuangzhuang's "The Blue Kite" when he discusses at great length Chen Kaige's "Farewell My Concubine."
The most annoying part of the book though is the terrible quality of the stills. They are blurry snapshots of paused screens. The book would have been better off without them; the text clearly does not need them. No studio credit was given for any of the screen shots. (For contrast, see Tam and Dissanayake's "New Chinese Cinema," which manages to present sharp frame stills from the studios.)
About time.......2000-07-22
It's about time a book on contemporary chinese cinema with such detail gets published. This book chronicles the growth of the new chinese cinema and how traditional visual arts ,as well as Mao's revolution influenced the filmmakers. Many westerners agree that what makes contemporary chinese films quite powerful are the simplicity of film elements from the story to art direction and cinematography This book clearly describes these co-relations. The visual analysis of the author makes us more appreciative of Zhang yimou's composition or Chen Kaige's films' characters. Even if there are many films about contemporary chinese cinema( and there aren't that many) ,this is the first book cinephiles of Chinese cinema should buy.

WARNING! Book REQUIRES audio tapes that are no longer in print.........2006-10-21
This book is useless unless you have the companion audio tapes as well (sold seperately). The first direction in the book is "insert audio tape #A-1 and follow the instructions". If you can find the audio tapes in some online auction or something it would be well worth the money, but you can't buy the audio tapes new as they have been out of print for years. The book description does not indicate this, unfortunately. It's a shame, too, becuase it looks like it would be an excellent book in combination with the audio tapes, and if they do ever come back in print I would definately recommend the book and the tapes to those who want to develop ear training skills on their own.

An important reference work for those interested in music theory ear training technique... This book can be helpful for the musician as well as the studio engineer and/or producer, or for the home recording studio enthusiast...

Required for CFP course; not sure why.......2007-07-04
This book is difficult to use for studying for the CFP exam, because it is essentially unindexed. The topics are not very thorough, and so I found it hard to answer questions in my homework even after carefully perusing the relevant chapters. I think what is missing is enough analysis to help you APPLY the rules.
I am not sure that it would be much more useful for an employee benefits manager.
Text Book For Retirement Planning.......2006-11-10
I needed this book for a Retirement Planning class in preparation for a CFP certificate. The book was a better value than from other sources, and I received it in time for my first class. This is my third class in Financial Planning and the text seems to be aimed at the practitioner in the field; so, it is somewhat difficult. However, it is very complete.
Useful textbook.......2006-07-30
I am enrolled in the Certified Financial Planner designation program. Tools and Techniques of Employee Benefit and Retirement Planning is the textbook for the Retirement Planning module. I found this to be the most useful and practical textbook in the course. It is a book that will remain on my shelf for future reference long after I finish the designation program. The information in the textbook in written in a practical manner. It is easy to understand, well-organized and to the point.

Worse than the Worst PowerPoint Presentation.......2005-02-03
If ever you've sat through a presentation in which the speaker followed a PowerPoint template and asked yourself, "Could anything be worse than this?", this book is the answer and the answer is "Yes, much worse!"
Stephan Leimberg may know something about employee-benefit and retirement planning but his writing skills might best be used to torture prisoners at Abu Ghraib.
For chapter after chapter, he follows the same deadly template: "What is it?, When is it indicated?, Advantage, Disadvantages, Design Features." For paragraph after paragraph, he follows the same hackneyed formula: Bland, meaningless string- I can't say sentence; so I have to resort to computer language to describe the assemblages of words he puts between periods- followed by another string that begins with "however", "although", or "but." Apparently he didn't write this book; he word processed it. Having conjured up an incoherent notion, he characteristically begins the next sentence with something along the lines of "This can often...." What the "this" refers to, not even he could figure out. As if all these travesties were not awful enough, he greatly prefers the passive over the active voice.
Besides being useful in the war on terror, the book might serve well for beginning courses on "How to Edit Pitiful Writing." Almost every sentence contains at least one example of how not to write.
Well, now I've told the truth and feel guilty for trashing the book and its author. Is there something nice I can say about Stephan Leimberg? The nicest thing I can think of to say is this: Maybe he didn't actually write the book.
Not for average consumer.......2004-05-21
I do not recommend this book as a main source of information for the average reader. It is informational, but probably incomplete and not useful in deciding which plan to implement. It is used as a supplement (not even the main textbook) in an advanced Certified Financial Planning (CFP) course. Students in this course already have proven knowledge of key concepts regarding taxes, investments, risk management-insurance, etc. This is tough education/training that is being undertaken by people who's main job is (will be) to advise on these subjects.
Informative But Organized Poorly........2004-04-22
The other review for this book refers to it as dry. Frankly, I have yet to read a riveting book on the retirement plan regulations. Liemberg touches on all the relevent topics that can arise when planning a retirement program for a company or an individual. What makes the book so tedious is that so much of the first 250 pages covering the various retirement saving vehicles rehash the same ERISA/IRS regulations every chapter. Chapters 25 through 27 which sumarize these regulations should be at the beginning of the book and then each chapter covering a retirement plan would only need a table referring to them. Liemberg instead tortures the readers with them in virtually every chapter from Ch.s 8 - 24. The meat of the book is then followed by about 25 short chapters covering all sorts of additional corporate benefits such as life and health insurance and reimbursement plans. Leimberg should be applauded for including so many topics but should have gotten his act together with the organization after 8 editions. For those of you that need to read this for the CFP or related professional tests, I suggest reading chapters 25-27 before reading Ch.s 8-24.
Poorly Written Textbook.......2004-02-21
This is a poorly written textbook. It is dry, uninformative and lacks any cohesive organization that would make the material easier to understand. The author uses a set template for each topic (Advantages, Disadvantages, Tax Implications etc.) that sometimes fits and sometimes does not fit the topic at hand. In more than one case, there are bullet items that repeat the same text as previously bulleted items. This is just sloppy editing and a lack of attentiveness ...
