A return to the spy stuff.......2005-02-18

This is a return to the action and espionage of the first book in the series. Most of this one takes place back in Japan. Toge, who has been guarding and trying to publicize the documents that prove that Hitler has Jewish ancestry, has finally found someone who can publicize them globally. His contact is the son of a Japanese general who has been spying on his father throughout the war. These plans quickly fall through and no one knows where the documents are, but Toge and others are beginning to realize that the war will still end, especially after the invasion of Pearl Harbor and the US entering the war against Japan. So life goes on in Japan.

Back in Germany, Adolf Kaufmann, a half German half Japanese boy raised in Japan but schooled in Germany, has been promoted to Lieutenant. When he is demoted for not arresting a war hero accused of trying to assassinate Hitler, he is restationed moving people between concentration camps. This is nasty work and Adolf, who is not even twenty yet, finds himself haunted by the faces of all the people he must shoot as part of his job. It is obvious to him and everyone else that he is soon going to be shipped off to the front line as canon fodder. With that alternative, he is offered a chance to transfer to the Gestapo and return to Japan to find and destroy the documents.

This is a great series. I highly recommend it. This book stands alone well and has plenty of action. By now many subplots involving minor characters are starting to reemerge, so having read other books in the series will add a few layers to the mix. Keep in mind that the series is very violent. A big part of this story involves Adolf being rough with and shooting people as part of his job and the psychological effect that this has on him. So don't give this book to your fourth grader to teach them history.

The story keeps getting better.......2004-06-08

Let's be honest here, if you've made it this far into Osamu Tezuka's 5 volume, 'Adolf,' series, chances are you'll find volume 4 just as engrossing as the previous books with enough dangling setup that will have you looking forward to finding out how the series finally concludes.

In volume 4, the bulk of the storyline focuses itself on Adolf Kamil in the waning days of Germany's involvement in WWII with all the horrors of Nazi cruelty reflected through his eyes. Fans of the series will not be disappointed with the intricate, but beautifully executed, plotting and characerizations that have certainly lived up to its billing as hallmarks of this series.

Another Work of Art.......1999-02-15

This is the fourth installment of "Adolf". The books keep getting better and better.

The character development is unbelievable. The artwork is fantastic.

The story is like a roller-coaster ride.

I highly recommend this book, especially if you have read any one of the first three.

FUNNY! FUNNY! FUNNY!.......2003-11-07

I recently purchased the "Art of the Bonsai Potato" kit for my husband who enjoys a good laugh now and then, and he loved it. I read the book as well, and we have both began our own "Zen cultivation" operation in an unused cupboard in our kitchen. They're fun, quirky, and great for kids, too. Young and old will appreciate the quick-witted tongue-and-cheek writing in the book included in the kit, and the Bonsai Potatoes are fun and easy to grow and "maintain" with the handy-dandy clippers and tweezers included! This kit makes a superb little gifts or stocking-stuffers at Christmas (or big-money dreidel ante at Chanukah!). Also, in doing a little more research on "Potato Bonsai," I discovered even more information on this new artform on the internet! This kit is very cool, and I would recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor and an open mind!

Let's face it, this instant Zen thing is funny. But once you've shelled out the bucks for the kit, you may find yourself wondering why you bothered. You're never really going to understand Bonsai by sprouting a potato. You might learn something about Zen somewhere down the road, but I wouldn't count on it. If it was this simple, all elementary school teachers would be Bodhisattvas and their students, enlightened masters. No, this is pretty much a joke, and a good one, too, but in the end it's a lot of money to pay for something that's going to leave you with a rotting potato and a bunch of bored friends who have heard the joke a few dozen times. You could go to the supermarket and get a sweet potato and do the same thing for far less.

The Benko gambit is one of the openings that often got me in trouble. This book has helped me find systems that fit my style and understand what was going on.
A book true to the learning qualities I am used to with The Gambit Guide Serie. Not too complicated, not too simple.

Useful, Comprehensive, Well-Organized.......2000-04-03

IM Pedersen has written a clear, comprehensive guide to the Benko and done it in such a fashion as to make it relatively easy to use right away. He organizes his information into ten chapters, with such titles as "The Classical Main Line," "Fianchetto Lines," "Dlugy's 5 f3," and so on. The "Quick Summaries" are especially useful for id'ing plans, themes, and key moves since Pedersen does not use model games but analyzes key variations and move alternatives. A powerful book!

Better Than the Actual Variation.......2007-04-19

If only the Volga Gambit (aka: The Benko) were as solid as this effort from McDonald. From the genetic and in depth look at a prescient Capablanca-Nimzowitch game to the section on What's Hot at upper levels of play, this book reads better (and thus entertains more) than the average chess book. And it delivers the goods on theory as well as McDonalds culls from a healthy set of sources (as listed in the bibliography) and mixes heavier analysis with ligther sections with some nice wit and pith injected to keep us reminded that it is, after all, just a game we are playing.

Now, if only the Benko itself offered as many winning chances to Black as this books does to its audience.....

An excellent start in the Benko.......2006-05-29

This book is a great place to start for players wanting to understand this gambit.

"The Benko Gambit Revealed" is a fairly quick read but has enough theory for club players to wheel out the Benko with confidence.
In particular, McDonald does a very good job of explaining the kind of compensation that black traditionally gets for the gambited pawn. One of the strongest points of this book is that the reader is taught standard tactical motifs as well as the fundamental strategic ideas. This will help the reader understand WHY certain lines are more critical than others.
As well as which ideas are more consistent with the philosophy of the opening.
Rather than demonstrating long lines, McDonald attempts to explain the unlying ideas behind the theory. This approach often leads to "feel good" books that are one-dimentional. However, McDonald does a good job of maintaining objectivity while being informative enough to keep the book from being too 'light'.

Overall, the book is a success because I think the reader comes away from this book with a terrific sense of what the Benko is about. Still, it will be necessary for stronger players to review material from other sources (such as Informator, New In Chess, etc.) in the most critical lines (e.g. Ephishin's 10.Rb1 in the fianchetto line). But for the average chess player there is ample coverage and don't worry in most lines McDonald is able to demonstate at least adequate compensation for the pawn.

Having spent years reading almost every book on the Benko available in english (and trust me, there have been quite a few) this book is the one I would recommend for players looking to start playing this system for Black. It is inspirational and informative. Be sure to pay attention through to the last chapter since that's where most of the theory is listed and serves a good transition into a more rigorious work some players will need to feel completely confortable.

Great first book to study the Benko.......2005-02-24

I signed up to play a thematic tournament via email. The theme is the Benko Gambit Declined. Since I'm a beginner at chess my library is rather poor. This book has helped me discover the many interesting variations involved with this opening. The commentary is really simple to follow. Great book.

This book covers the strategies and middle game themes of the Benko Gambit. It shows how black has a better endgame in the Benko, and how to pressurize white even though you are a pawn down, but with better piece mobility. It is also good from the white side, as it shows strategies to counter the benko. This is a impartial book showing 80 well annotated games. Covers eacy key line in this opening and shows the major themes and key strategical and tactical motifs in each variation.
After reading this I would recommend the reader to also read the Modern Benoni by the same author, which is another cousin varation of the benko, with similar pawn structures. The games are extremely interesting, and if you are a benko gambit player like I am from either side then this is a must on your bookshelf.

Great for Personal Life or Running Your Business.......2006-03-31

The concepts in this book are presented in such an inspiring way, that you start making little changes in your daily life almost automatically. But, they are also so practical, described so well, and even come with concrete steps to follow, that the suggestions can even be life-changing. I first used the book when I became overwhelmed juggling a legal career at an overly busy office, and a family. Now that I've started my own law firm, it is helping me to stay calm while being productive and focused.

Follow the Book and Reap Rewards!.......2005-01-07

I picked up this book at the beginning of the year after reading rave reviews in hopes but not truly expecting it to help my mindset. Each year I set goals and though I may accomplish one or two..generally the next year I am setting the same goals.

By the time I had completed the first half of the book my way of thinking had changed. I completed the exercises as I read the book.

You begin by listing your goals. Then you decide which is more important and finally which is MOST important. It seems so simple yet the way the author teaches you to do this gave me greater success than other methods.

I was really surprised to find what my most desired goal was. I thought it was something else. But by following the exercises I realized a I had a strong desire to accomplish another goal I never realized was the most important to me. Next you work towards accomplishing your goal.

McCarthy uses the image of a light switch. If you are switched on you are working towards your goals. Conversely if you are not you are not ON PURPOSE.

Within days I was accomplishing tasks to help me achieve many of my goals! An excellent book and most highly recommended!

I'm Super-Mom now!.......2004-03-25

Kevin's system of organizing the important things-to-do in your life has really helped me streamline my life. Sometimes I get complacent and don't have my to-do list written down, but then I'll feel super overwhelmed...my husband calls it "overwhelmed to the point of paralysis!" Soon, I realize I need my OPP to-do-list form! I print out a copy of the form I made on the computer, and start writing my to-do list using Kevin's formula. Then I can sleep soundly knowing my priorities for the next day or two.

Comments on "On-purpose person".......2002-01-17

Actually, I was a person who didn¡¦t have any purpose. Therefore, I always wait for others to play with me. When I was playing with them, it was a very happy time for me. However, I felt lost and lonely again when I was at rest. After reading this book, it really changed me a lot. Since the author was going to teach the readers to become an on-purpose person, it is very worthy to read this book if you feel lost in this moment.
Here are some comments from me:

- Well-structure
Since it is a very difficult to make a person become on-purpose, it is very hard to understand. Therefore, the author used a very good and clear structure to express the ideas and methods of being an on-purpose person. For example, he divided the content into 3 steps. Then, it is very easy to follow the ideas and methods.

- Interesting
In many books, it is very boring if it is related to any philosophy. However, it is a very interesting book since it is wrote in story format. Also, different characters told different steps in the book. Moreover, the methods and ideas are related to the characters¡¦ own experiences. When you are reading, you will become one of the characters in the book. So, it really can help you to involve in the story.

- Meaningful
The concept of this book is clear ¡V how to be an on-purpose person. From my point of view, being an on-purpose person is very important. I can¡¦t imagine that how terrible is a life without purpose. Besides, I was strongly agreed that the author used a light switch to make a metaphor. When the switch is off, that means you are off-purpose. When the switch is on, that means you are on-purpose. Therefore, it is no need for us to switch on the light in the whole day. But it is necessary for us to make the switch if you want a bright life.
