Book Description

"Drawing relies on a clear vision. It also requires thought which, in, turn, builds understanding. Drawing cannot be detached from seeing and thinking about the fundamental nature of the subject matter being represented. The knowledge and understanding gained through drawing from life directly enhances our ability to draw from the imagination. Just as thought can be put into words, ideas can be made visible in a drawing to promote visual thinking and further stimulate the imagination. Once what is seen or imagined is made visible in a drawing, the image takes on a life of its own and communicates graphically. However eloquently or crudely, all drawings, speak to the eye." From the Preface … Francis D.K. Ching

5 out of 5 stars Drawing: A Creative Process.......2000-08-31

Like the rest of Ching's books, this one is great as well. I use it as a resource for Drawing and illustration classes in college. It covers all the basics of sketching and drawing that are important to build a foundation for free-hand drawing. It covers everything from basic shapes and textures to gesture drawing and proportion. I also recomend the book "Design Drawing" by F. Ching.

5 out of 5 stars SOMETHING IN YOUR CHRISTMAS STOCKING!.......2005-04-05

I don't collect many comic books anymore. Where I once had a collection of some 12,000 comics, I now have less than 200. I've sold off most of it but one thing I do still collect is comics that have a Christmas theme, particularly those that are pre-1970. That's why this collection of classic Archie Christmas stories came as such a treat to me. In this volume you get 14 wonderful tales from the pages of "Archies Christmas Stocking" between the years of 1956 and 1963. These are hilarious and even heart-warming tales filled with the kind of holiday cheer you just don't see in comic books anymore.

                      This classic volume includes:

"Christmas Socking" Veronica and Betty conspire to get Archie and Reg to kiss Moose's girl Midge under the mistletoe since Moose won't do it. But the boys and Midge start enjoying it a little too much!

"Idiots Delight" Betty wants to spend time with Archie but he's busy with Veronica. Then she hits on the perfect scheme...play the dumb blonde so well that Archie has no choice but to help Betty with everything including wrapping presents and trimming the tree.

"Ring that Belle" Veronica mistakenly believes that Archie is giving her and engagement ring for Christmas. When Archies friends find out, he finds himself repeatedly returning her gift for something else. Will it be the right gift?

"Seasonal Smooch" Reg tells Moose he has to let him kiss Midge under the mistletoe or Santa won't bring Moose any presents. But that dirty Reg uses everything but mistletoe to get his lips on Midge including hedge leaves, parsley, and carrot leaves.

"Those Christmas Blues" Archie tells his parents he's too busy to help them decorate the tree. His saddened parents reminisce about Archie as a little boy and how he loved to help. But Archie has a big surprise for his parents.

"A Job for Jingles" Archie is visited by a precocious little elf named Jingles. Archie introduces the elf to the rest of the gang and Jangles has the time of his life.

"The Return of Jingles" Jingles returns to Riverdale to see the gang again but this time he's not alone. He bragged so much about what a great time he had that two other elves, Jangles and Jeeves, follow him to Riverdale resulting in a big fight between the trio until the big man in the red suit steps in.

As mentioned, there are 14 stories in all and they are just a joy to read. All the gang is here including Reg, Jughead, Mr. Weatherbee, and Mr. Lodge. Filled with the typical Archie brand of humor and that classic Archie Comic's art-style, this will be a book that you'll want to read every holiday season. The book is a 96 page, square bound trade paperback. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Christmas with Archie & The gang.......2004-05-31

This is a nice paperback book of Archie Christmas stories to own. It is Volume One, and hopefully there will be more released. Most of the stories come from comics as early as 1956 and as late as 1963. So if you are a big fan of Archie Comics, this is a must have, because it has some rare older stories that don't get published in the new comics anymore. One of the stories is the first time that Jingles the elf makes an appearance, who has been a staple of their Christmas stories. Each story is true to character, whether it be about Veronica's wealth, or the Betty/Veronica/Archie triangle, it's generally your typical Archie stories you love with a Christmas flair. Bound to be a collectors item!

                      Book Description

Gleefully thumbing its nose at a field typically dominated by straight white men, Juicy Mother is an alternative-to-alternative comics. This cartoon anthology features work by and about queers, women, and people of color. Showcasing work by such well-known cartoonists as Alison Bechdel (Dykes to Watch Out For), Howard Cruse (Wendel, Stuck Rubber Baby), Diane DiMassa (Hothead Paisan), Ariel Schrag (Definition, Potential), Ivan Velez Jr. (Tales of the Closet, Blood Syndicate), Robert Kirby (Curbside), and Joan Hilty (Bitter Girl), the collection also includes exciting new talents and inspired artist/writer collaborations. Highlights include comics about an older butch dyke and her Lolita, an African American gay man coming of age, an Arab Muslim dyke searching for her identity, two big hairy men getting married, and a cynical Latina teen’s encounter with aliens. The stories in Juicy Mother are not just exceptionally exuberant and carefree, they are a celebration of artistry and diversity.

                      5 out of 5 stars A SUPERB UNDERGROUND BOOK.......2005-09-20

Edited by Jennifer Camper, Juicy Mother is self-described as commix for discerning homosexuals, uppity ladies, fierce people of color, and all of their friends. You'll certainly find all of that in more in this compilation trade paperback from Soft Skull Press. The 150 page book features an eclectic array of comic strips that run the gamut from very rough, to professionally polished (although they may be reluctant to admit to it). What's evident in reading the book is the passion that the artists and writers have for the subject matter.

"Doll Face" by Stephen Winter and Robert Kirby is a bittersweet tale of love, found and then lost, by a gay black man who describes himself as "old". We see his excursion through the gay community and feel his pain but rejoice in his eventually maturation process.

"Italian Cousin" is a rather twisted tale by Serena Pillai. Chris' 15 year old cousin from Italy comes to stay with he and his wife, and spends the entire time trying to seduce the middle-aged Chris. "Teddy Bear's Wedding" is a delightfully screwball tale of gay marriage long before states were allowing it and before the heated debate. Two, middle-aged, overweight men plan a wedding in the park and use just about every homosexual cliché in this wacky, and wonderfully illustrated story by Robert Tripton.

"Look! Look!" is a different take on old grammar school reading primers as it tells the story of two lesbians as Delta just gets out of jail and goes out on the town with Peanut. A trip to a bar turns into a brawl as the pair teach a couple of overzealous men a lesson they will never forget with lines like "See Delta Kick Ass!" and "Hear Peanut Crunch Heads." This story features the best art in the entire book, shot directly from G.B. Jones' pencils with words by Jennifer Camper.

Other talents in the book include Ariel Schrag, Leanne Franson, and a wonderful cartoon jam by Camper, Howard Cruse, Diane DiMassa, Rupert Kinnard, Alison Bechdel, and Ivan Velez, Jr. This book shows off the true essence of underground/alternative comix.

5 out of 5 stars Poussez Le Amour, Push For More.......2005-06-30

I don't know what it's like in the Big City, but here in the Hinterlands this book arrived like a bolt of lightning from the sky. The good kind of lightning. I've had friends who tried to get me into alternative "ooh so cool" comix before, ie the famous R. Crumb.
Yes there's a certain level of wackyness that could be appreciated but I, frankly, have never fully enjoyed cause everyone was well, hetero and WHITE yo. Hey I have nothing against the caucasians of this country (my best friend is white), but it's quite different to read a supposed "alternative" comic and realize it's all the same frou-frou with added crass, sex, and naked boobies. Whatever.
This collection on the other hand, IS actually from the left wing nutters, homos, freaks, and rejects.
Oh and of course, it's a helluva fun. However, I do have one complaint - it's too short! When's the next one coming out? I. Want. More.

5 out of 5 stars juicy mother is so hot hot hotget it now do yourself a favor.......2005-06-10

I can't stop rereading Juicy Mother. Every piece in this underground queer comix anthology has its merits, but Ramadan by Jennifer Camper is an exquisitely funny/serious departure from her usual rowdy debauchery. Also not to be missed is the huge outrageous cartoon jam with Camper, Howard Cruse, Diane DiMassa, Alison Bechdel, Ivan Velez Jr. and Rupert Kinnard each taking a turn in the story. Give us more Juicy Mother, more, more, more, but buy it and you'll be satisfied.

                      4 out of 5 stars A great well told Muslim/Dyke story.......2005-02-01

How refreshing. A Comix about an Arab Muslim dyke. It even starts with a verse from the 1st chapter in the Qur'an.

Well drawn, in the tradition of "dykes to watch out for", Jennifer Camper's "Ramadan" Comix is part of the anthology debut of Juicy Mother. It caught my attention `cuz it explores a Lebanese Lesbian (I never tire of hearing those words together) day's journey of fasting during Ramadan. It has everything: Flash back to childhood memories, culture-conformity in the work place, Nicely introduced Islamic concepts like " Suhoor" & "Shari'a" (if you want to know what they are: buy the book), coming out to religious parents, and even some post 911 reflections. A few concise and delightfully illustrated panels takes you through what is usually a life time worth of wisdom in drawing parallels between Anti-Arab hysteria and home-grown homophobia. JC even manages to bring up the subject of hijab and veiling without degrading the point in discussing clothes and oppression `a la usual western way. Arab/Muslim/Dyke oppression is ultimately triumphed over when one sticks to her cultural customs despites all detractors.

Thoroughly entertaining adult comix for gender pirates and sexual outlaws, Juicy Mother 2 contains depictions of sweet sex, rough sex, and confusing sex.

If you love cars like the 60's batmobile, fireball 500,munster's coach just to name a few then this book is for you.George Barris known for his modified cars and rods has put together a collection of photos and details of several cars. Not a comprehensive of all his cars but enough to please most people.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview but a few cars are missing........1999-02-16

Great coverage of TV's Batmobile and the Munter's cars. Authors also remind you about cars you didn't know Barris did: The Beverly Hillbillies truck, the Flintstones (film of course) cars, updates of the Knight Rider Firebird, the Jurassic Park Explorers, and the infamous sitcom "My Mother the Car" (the butt of many Johnny Carson jokes). But also taking up space are forgotten cars from forgotton projects...the Bugaloos dune buggy and a TV special "Romp". Cars I would have liked to have seen but didn't make the cut include the Monkee Mobile, the Green Hornet's "Black Beauty" and the Stutz replicas made for the TV adventure series "Bearcats!". Overall a good book, but I have a hunch that only the surface of Barris' career has been scratched. How about a large format book with lots of color and details on the surviving movie cars and "Kustoms" that made Barris the legend he is?

John Potter, one of the tenors in the Hilliard Ensemble and a lecturer at my university music department in York, is one of the most eclectic and dynamic singers of our time. This collection of essays on the art of vocal music, including two pieces of his own work, is designed to provide students of singing with a useful set of reference points.

If you are a singer, you would certainly do well to consider getting hold of this. Some chapters deal with the mechanics of the voice and the acoustical properties thereof; this can become very technical and indeed is not a pre-requiste for singing, but some of it makes for interesting reading. More interesting are the various chapters on various singing traditions of the world: German lieder, jazz vocals, opera, church and cathedral choirs, singing amongst indiginous cultures of Africa, America and the Far East, singing as part of primary school education. Potter's own contributions include a useful one on ensemble singing that draws heavily on his experience with the Hillard Ensemble; there is also a chapter (translated into English) about choir warm-ups, particular those that are useful for children's choirs. These chapters in particular should be considered invaluable to choir directors as well as to chamber choirs and vocal ensembles seeking to achieve the kind of excellence achieved by the Hilliards. Other contributors to the book include well-known singers and academics such as Stephen Varcoe.

This book is not recommended to the casual reader, however. The overall tone is very academic and it is far better if you are studying singing academically; I have never had a proper singing lesson in my life, but as someone who sings regularly and has an interest in the direction of singing ensembles, I find this book useful to open up from time to time.

Great book. I use the concept all the time in my presentations and in my team's work. We have systems in place to approach the four different personality types and this book started that entire thought-process. Fantastic book! The current generation, the Generosity Generation, doesn't just want customer service, the members of this generation want a personalized EXPERIENCE. Read this book to open your eyes to how to provide that experience.

5 out of 5 stars "It's about you, not me".......2006-04-27

The premise is simple: "Do unto others as they'd like done unto them."

The classic "Golden Rule" involves a perspective bias, the implicit selfishness of which can and will wreck your interactions with others. Even if you think you have the very best intentions, you'll unwittingly sabotage your objectives. By learning and applying the "Platinum Rule," you'll greatly improve the quality and effectiveness of your interactions with others.

So, how do you know what others would like do unto them? Ask them! Seriously, that's of course a necessary part, but the authors give very thorough treatment of the subject so the reader will know how to step into the worlds of others. They describe and discuss the four basic personality types and impart valuable knowledge about numerous blends of multiple types:

                          * Great discussion and example of the meaning and importance of adaptability (Ch. 7, pp. 131-133)
                          * Striking example and analysis of a sales environment and the ramifications of not fitting your sales style to the customer

This book is easy to read, practical, and powerful. I think everybody would benefit from reading and therefore highly recommend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars The Platinum Rule: 4 Basic Personalities.......2006-02-25

Provides a fundamental understanding of the diverse personalities that we deal with on a day-to-day basis and how each individual has at least 2 of the 4 which cross depending on the circumstances or situations. Creates a less stressful and less frustrating frame of mind when dealing with conflict or differences.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Personality Styles Books.......2005-02-27

The Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," is an excellent rule for ethical treatment of others. The Platinum Rule: "Do unto others as they prefer to be done unto," is an excellent rule for communicating with people in all kinds of environments.

Tony Alessandra and Michael O'Connor have written an excellent book similar to lots of other books that are out there. All the books and systems are based on the same Jungian Psychology of Personality Types.

You'll hear these different systems under a variety of names. You'll hear them as personality types or social styles or other things.

The most complex and best document of all of these is the Myers Briggs Type Inventory. It uses four dimensions to create sixteen basic personality types. Most of the social style systems are a bit simpler. They use two dimensions to create four personality types.

In my supervisory training and in using this material myself, I found that the MBTI is much more effective and nuanced in terms of analysis. But, I found that the social style systems are more likely to be used, and used effectively, when communicating in a social or business setting.

Essentially, you learn two things from any of these systems. You learn, first of all, how you tend to communicate, and what you value. Do you communicate directly or indirectly? Are you focused on the mission to be accomplished or on the relationship with the person you're communicating with?

The basic social style structure then shows you how to figure out what styles other people may use and a few other important things. You can learn how what you do can be very ineffective with some other people. And, you can use some things you can do differently to make your communication more effective.

There is a third advantage to this material if you are applying it in a work group where everybody uses the same material. That advantage is that this material will give you a common language for describing many types of communications in supervisory situations.

All of that is true for all the material that's out there on social styles. I think this is the best book, though.

What Alessandra and O'Connor have done that is different from others is they have given you the ability to use a very simple and rough-cut method and then also the ability to go deeper into more variance of style. It's almost like getting the best of the more complex instruments in with the simpler ones.

I've been using varieties of this material for almost thirty years in supervisory skills training. I've found that just about all of the reputable systems are first rate. But, you should buy this book if you want one solid insight and reference source to help you do more effective communicating.

4 out of 5 stars Understanding Yourself Increases Your Sales.......2002-04-03

This book gives the student of human persuasion something to think about. Although not discovered by the authors, they outline four distinct personality styles. Knowing the style of your customer is a great advantage. They give numerous examples and insights on how to talk to and interact with the various styles. These examples and insights are very useful for a salesperson.

If you want to understand others first understand you. This work assists you in understanding what style personality you are. After understanding where you are coming from, you begin to understand where other people are coming from. This makes you an excellent communicator.

One of the most difficult areas of personal selling is figuring out what the customer really wants. This endeavor needs good communication skills on the part of the sales representative. Opening a window of communication with the customer is critical. And, you don't want the window to close when you have your neck out the window talking with the customer. Understanding how certain customers think about the world and other humans, helps with this window of communication. The authors give specific examples of how to talk to each personality style and what types of behaviors to expect.

The book is practical and the reader is immediately able to go from book to the field and use the techniques. If you are in the sales trade study this book. But we all need to sell ourselves and thinking about the techniques and concepts of this work will benefit anyone.
