    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Fans of Vintage Dior.......2001-11-08

I adore vintage clothing. I collect it, wear it, and recently co-authored a book about it. So, as you'd imagine, I'm always interested in books about my favorite subject. Dior in Vogue, by Brigid Keenan, reminded me why I love these beautiful old dresses so much. When the book arrived in the mail, this Florida girl sat in her hot car (small, black) and spent the next twenty minutes gazing at pictures of Msr.Dior's exquisite creations, the majority of which--in this book, anyway--were coats and evening dresses (small, black); as I turned the pages, I longed to be walking in mid-century New York or Paris, feeling the chill wind of autumn swishing my fabulous New Look skirts. Politically incorrect smoke would curl upward from my ebony cigarette holder.

The photography is plentiful and inspiring, and the history of the great House of Dior is compelling reading for any fashionphile, especially if she loves the styles of the past as much as I do. What a wonderful book.

In this third collection of Fox Trot comic strips, Roger and Andy (the parents), Paige, Peter and Jason once again show us the humorous side of everyday life. Includes stories about Peter going through a teenage breakup, Paige trying to find a date for the prom and the family buying a computer. Hands down, the funniest part is when the computer salesman suggests that, for an additional price, they upgrade the new computer to a 40-meg hard drive and 4 megs of RAM. Well, after all, it was 1991.

5 out of 5 stars Witty Humor with an Attitude.......2007-02-17

I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.

The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.

5 out of 5 stars Black Bart Says Draw. Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-20

I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspiciously wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newspaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.

Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortunately I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.

        5 out of 5 stars Here's a sampling of the stories..........2001-03-03

Quincy becomes the Lone Iguana. Roger tries to cook scrambled eggs. Peter and Denise almost break up. Jason and Paige bake Christmas cookies. Jason gets up too early on Christmas. Jason builds the Death Snow Star. Jason designs suction-cup leeches. Jason tries to reknit Paige's sweater. Andy buys a new computer, but Jason doesn't want to stop playing Star Trek games on it and Roger can't learn how to play it. Jason and Marcus have a bet on who can write a longer essay. Peter tries to get something for Denise's birthday. Jason draws Slug-Man on his desk (the only time Slug-Man isn't fighting Paige-O-Tron). Paige has to go with Peter to the prom. Jason starts working on his haunted house early. Jason becomes obbsessed with "The Simpsons". Roger meets his summer intern.

This is an incredibly funny book! Bill Amend has a great sense of humor! The Foxes have tons of hilarious adventures! Check out other FoxTrot books for more fun!

4 out of 5 stars Made me laugh out loud.......2007-03-22

"Some may argue that being concerned about mind control is excessively paranoid. These people are wrong; it is exactly paranoid enough."

Thus begins the book Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie - Practical Mind Control Protection for Paranoids. This book is a very extensive and in depth illustration of paranoia and the protection of being monitored or controlled by outside elements such as satellites. Zapato really seems to know his stuff on this topic.

He covers such topics as construction and maintenance of your beanie, Phycotronic and AFDB(Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie ) Theory, and how to know who your enemies are (IÆll bet you never guessed that grass is one of them). This is all quite thorough information for advanced or novice paranoids.

I reiterate that it is difficult to believe that so much thought has been put into this subject by the author, but he does make the subject incredibly interesting.

Well versed and amusing, Mr. Zapato takes this subject well beyond any preconceived limits. The highest compliment that I can pay is this: it made me laugh out loud.

        4 out of 5 stars Huh?.......2006-02-26

Are you kiddin me? $10 for a book on how to wrap foil around your head? buy some foil ($2) and wrap it yourself; why spend $10 of your own money on a book endorsed by the govt?

        2 out of 5 stars Beware: Aluminum doesn't work.......2006-02-22

The concept is to place a faraday cage around your head, but what the unseen forces who seek to control your mind, DON'T want you to know is that ALUMINUM does not work. In fact, use of aluminum has been proven in scientific studies to profoundly exacerbate Alzheimer's and other ravaging mental diseases and illnesses. USE OF ALUMINUM WILL FACILITATE MENTAL INSTABILITY MAKING THE WEARER MORE SUSEPTABLE TO MIND CONTROL RAYS!!!

The best metallic hats to use are molded TINFOIL lined with circular dispersal radiators (items that resemble the springs found in retractable fountain pens.) These springs should be placed every 1/4 inch and all turned opposite directions of each other... one turning clockwise, one turning counter clockwise, etc.

Remember, ALUMINUM KILLS. This is serious, I AM NOT A KOOK!!! YOU MUST LISTEN TO ME, I AM ONLY TRYING HELP!!!

        5 out of 5 stars I've been Saved!.......2005-06-23

I've been saved my the 3M corporation who supplied the aluminum foil and the scotch tape used to construct my beanie! No more will I be a slave to the government, aliens, and heartless corporations...

5 out of 5 stars Beware Of Disinformation !!!.......2005-03-12

This book is clearly part of a disinformation campaign by the Illuminati.

EVERYONE KNOWS that aluminium is COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE for protection against psyonic mind-control RAYS. You need to use SILVER or even better, gold and PLATINUM to deflect the MIND-CONTROLLERS. Why do you think royalty used those materials for headgear, historically????

If you follow the directions in this book, you will be OPEN to MIND-CONTROL RAYS. PROOF: You will find yourself subject to fits of laughter as you read it. If you even lend it is a friend, HE or SHE will ALSO be subject to feelings of humous intensity! This manipulation of your emotional cortex will MANIFEST through VISUAL CONTACT with the contents of this book.

        Beware! Beware!! Beware!!!

        Book Description

The city has long been an important location for filmmakers. Visually compelling and always modern, it is the perfect metaphor for man's place in the contemporary world.

In this provocative collection of essays, films as diverse as The Man with the Movie Camera, Annie Hall, Street of Crocodiles, Boyz N the Hood, Three Colors Red, and Crash are examined in terms of the relationship between cinema and the changing urban experience in Europe and the United States since the early twentieth century. Peter Jelavich, for example, links the suppression of the creative, liberal Weimar Berlin in the 1931 film Berlin Alexanderplatz to the rise of the Nazi regime and the end of one of the great eras of modernist experimentation in German visual culture; Jessie Labov considers Kieslowski's treatment of the Warsaw housing blok in Dekalog in terms of Solidarity's strategy of resisting totalitarianism in 1980s Poland; Allan Siegel examines the motif of the city in a broad range of American and international cinema to demonstrate how film and society since the 1960s have been driven by the fading of mass political radicalism and the triumph of privatization and capital; Paula Massood uses the socially illuminating theories of Mikhail Bakhtin to examine the representation of the ghetto and urban underclass in recent African-American films such as Menace II Society; and Matthew Gandy examines the focus on disease in Todd Haynes's [Safe] as a metaphor for social and spatial breakdown in contemporary Los Angeles.

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "coke made in coke oven establishments excluding screenings and breeze" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

From the author: To the extent that the asthma morbidity so prevalent in children today is due to under-diagnosis or lack of appropriate treatment, schools are increasingly faced with the issue of defining their role in the care of children with asthma. This paper describes efforts to conduct school-wide screening for asthma in an inner-city elementary school over the past two years. Screening methodology adopted for the project resulted in a simple and noninvasive approach for identifying children with current asthma in a school setting. While not as medically comprehensive as would be required to conclusively diagnose asthma, the simple screening approach proved efficient in identifying a population of elementary school children with a significant level of asthma morbidity. The paper discusses the effectiveness and feasibility of the screening efforts and proposes how such a screening program might be incorporated into the routine health activities undertaken at any elementary school. You've read the how-to-figure-out-what-you-really-want-to-do books and completed their soul-searching assignments. You've prepared a resume worthy of the world's top performer in your field, and you've printed it on discreetly fabulous paper. And you've sent it to the (select, of course) few hundred employers you'd like to work for... and still you're looking for that great job. No wonder, then, that a book with the title Don't Send a Resume has grabbed your attention.

Jeffrey Fox is the ultimate marketer, consumed with and successful at ensuring his product stands out and is snatched up--and in this case, that product is you. Don't Send a Resume is his tip-laden guide on how to make yourself visible, desirable, and ultimately invaluable to your next employer. Dismissing the well-worn routes of sending unsolicited resumes and contacting personnel departments, Fox concentrates on what will turn job-seekers into super salespeople. While occasionally just spiced-up commonsense, his advice is simple, direct, and often ingenious, supported by details and made colorful by the odd illustration. Understand the jargon of job seeking and translate that jargon into meaningful marketing clues. Determine how the job you want creates value for the company and "dollarize" yourself accordingly. Look for a job in the unorthodox places that other job-seekers overlook. Write "boomerang" letters in response to job ads. Don't expect employers to care about your job objective or what you like to do; they only care about what they need. Don't talk and tell in an interview; answer, ask, listen, and sell. Whatever you do, don't order sauce-splashing food in a lunch interview, however tempting the dish. Oh, and don't forget to ask for the job. --S. Ketchum

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Job Getting Book I've Seen.......2007-04-24

Not only is this book fun and quick, it is POTENT. In addition, the concepts also make it one of the best SALES books I've read - and isn't that how you get a job? If you have to choose ONE book for job search advice - this is the one. And, no, I don't know the author! :)

5 out of 5 stars Should be called Don't JUST Send a Resume.......2007-01-29

Excellent tips for job seekers. Title should be revised to Don't JUST Send a Resume. Jeffrey Fox is sly as a fox in the title of the book and he doesn't really want you to NOT send a resume, he does suggest much more than simply sending a resume. Excellent advice for getting an interview and excellent advice for pre-interview (pre-sales) preparation. This book is a quick read and could be quicker if not for a few fluff paragraphs - (Be a Fish out of Water, Don't Order Linguini with Marinara Sauce, Wind Me Up at Harvard). The advice is easy to put into action and as I plan to embark on a new phase in my own career, this primer has increased my confidence several fold.

                              5 out of 5 stars Reminders.......2006-05-29

No, this book isn't for everyone, but it had great ideas that some people can tend to forget or never knew. I thought it was a nice refresher and there are some things that I'll probably never use, but I'm smart enough to know that a book won't give you 100% of an answer. You have to be smart enough to pick out what applies to you, what your personality will allow and go from there.

There is a review that says "DO not call." I would disgree with that (even in the South). I called an employer to make sure that they got my resume, and it resulted in my resume getting into the right hands and I got the job.

This was a great book. I didn't agree with every single word, but I did agree with the spirit of what the author was trying to impart to others and I thank him for it - I start my new (and better, with a raise) job in two weeks. This book had a direct and important impact on the job I just got hired for and made it more than worth the $16.95 I spent on it!

It's fairly interesting, yet there's nothing that's really slap-your-mama impressive. Most of it is just stuff the majority of us knew anyway. I pour through hundreds of resumes every few months, and I am the final decision maker when hiring a new employee.

It's not well suited for the southern states. The author repeatedly gives examples of the job applicant stating in his resume, "If I haven't heard from you in a day or so I'll call you." The best way to get your resume thrown in the trash, and maybe even a bloody nose, is to do "follow up calls" after sending a resume. If the company wants you, they'll call you. Your calling the company isn't going to push them into giving you an interview. Do NOT call the company.

Another thing that worries me is what the author considers as lying. In one passage the author says something like, "Do not tell lies on your resume. If you spent the summer as an intern stuffing envelopes you CAN say, 'I was an integral player in the implementation of a major million dollar advertising campaign.'"

Folks, I'm sorry to crash the little parade, but the above example is LYING. If you were a worthless envelope stuffer then don't try to play it up like you were someone special. You'll get much better results by saying you were asked to do a few things to help out, you enjoyed it, and that you would love to have a more important role next time.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book.......2006-04-05

I have been a full time executive career consultant for the past 4 years. If you skip chapters 12-15 and 40, this is a great book for most career seekers. It forces people to realize the getting a job is really and marketing and sales exercise... even if you are an engineer, a teacher, or an accountant. This is a great book with lots of good techniques for marketing yourself to potential employers or customers. It is written in a very accessible style, organized as a few dozen tips or pieces of advice, each with a few pages elaborating on them. Though its targets the business professional, the advice is very applicable to anyone looking to land a job contract or sale with someone new.
