Great Empresses and Queens.......2005-04-16
Tom Tierney has done a fantastic job in portraying the women selected, which isn't easy since there are no portraits left of some of them. I think the best likenesses were those of Liliuokalani and Princess Grace (somewhat different from "Grace Kelly Paper Dolls"), although Eleanor of Aquaitaine looks a bit like a store mannequin. The best costumes are those of Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette, Josephine and Princess Grace's wedding dress.
One of the reasons I didn't give this book 5 stars is that not all dolls are drawn in the same scale which is a little distracting when turning the pages (Elizabeth I is especially small). Another reason is the decision to portray a number of the women in profile, which gives them less character (the doll of Cleopatra being an exception). Finally, Maria Theresa of Austria was a glaring omission.
If you want to introduce your child to history as it was, not dressed up to suit your own morality, buy this book. It might inspire them to study history in depth.
stunning.......2001-12-02
Please take the above review from the woman who rated this for a child with a grain of salt. These paper dolls are not meant to be cut out and played with. They are beautiful historical treasures, especially helpful for me as a theatrical costume designer. As for the nudity. What she refers to is the doll of Cleopatra, who is not nude, she is wearing a historically accurate, shear muslim gown with exposed breasts. When my 12 year old was studying eqypt she used this picture as a guide for a portrait she had to do for an eqyption museum. It is a lovely lovely depiction and is not the least bit sordid.
Inappropriate Nudity.......2000-12-30
I have to warn anyone buying this for a young child (and I don't know any adults who play with paper dolls) that there is quite a bit of detailed adult nudity in this book. I bought this for an 8 year old and the detail of women's private parts to be cut out and played with seems quite inappropriate to me. One of the dolls actually had the nude picture AS the outfit. She starts clothed and you dress her nude! Another "queen story" speaks of a lesbian liason the queen had. The politically correct crowd might like that but be warned for you in the other camp. This book has some beautiful costumes for some queens but the 2 nude queens and 1 lesbian story make it totally unacceptable in my book. I find many other paper dolls like Little House, Shirley Temple and Polly Pratt appropriate for the actual "paper doll" age girls.
A royal portraitist in a past life?.......2000-04-22
Mr. Tierney's works have always been breathtaking, and thiscollection is no different. Each of these ladies is shown in apositive light of their native culture, and the loving attention to detail that the artist gives to each of them shows a great love and respect for his art and subjects. The little synopses of each lady's life leave you wanting to know even more. Tom Tierney is an artist with a capital A. If anyone has a daughter and wants to show her strong, influential role models, look no further than this collection.

Book Description
A quest for vengeance wouldn't be complete without a little poison. Having tired of his retainer's futile attempts at reining in the unstoppable samurai, the shogun himself sends Abeno Kaii, a master of poison, to join the Yagyu in their hunt for ronin Itto Ogami and his little boy Daigoro. Armed with a sack full of poison and a network of streetwalking spies, Abeno creeps ever closer to the father and son. Soon Ogami and Daigoro find themselves surrounded on all sides, facing deadly secret agents, murderously seductive prostitutes, and a river of poison flowing all around them! The Eisner and Harvey Award winning series rolls ever onward with five more stories of intrigue and intensity.

Daigoro becomes the target of the poisoner Abe-No-Kaii.......2003-01-04
When at the end of the previous volume Ogami Itto and Daigoro "walked on the Moon" and entered Edo, I was prepared for a new chapter in the quest of Lone Wolf & Cub. But Volume 20, "A Taste of Poison" finds Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima surprising us again, as this is far and away the most thematic collection to date. "A Taste of Poison" is basically a novel with the epic manga series, although as such the story within the story does not end here. The Shogun has endured the pathetic attempts of Retsudo Yagyu and his retainers to kill Lone Wolf long enough and loans the head of the Yagyu clan the services Abe-no-Kaii, the head of the Kuchiyaku. As the "official mouths" of the Shogun, the Kuchiyaku were the tasters who check food for poisons. Abe-no-Kaii is a master of poison and this entire volume is devoted to this sordid man and his efforts to kill Lone Wolf & Cub.
WARNING: This manga was never a story for children and that has never been truer than it is with regards to this volume. There has been strong sexual content in previous stories, but Abe-no-Kaii's depravity extends well beyond such things.
(98) "Good Fortune, Ill Fortune" introduces us to Abe-no-Kaii and finds the Shogun ordering Retsudo Yagyu to bring him the Wolf's head in ten days. The master poisoner explains his plan to bring Ogami Itto to bay by poisoning Daigoro. However, neither Abe-no-Kaii nor Retsudo Yagyu trusts the other, and each has murderous plans for when Lone Wolf and Cub are dead.
(99) "Lair of the Nighthawks" refers to the prostitutes who walk the streets of Edo by night. Into their world comes the Yakuza thief O-Tsohi, the "Silk Spider." Addicted to Abe-no-Kaii's kizami narcotic, she becomes a key part of his plan to poison Lone Wolf & Cub.
(100) "Blighted Leaves" tells of how Ogami Itto and Daigoro are finally spotted and Abe-no-Kaii's plan is put into motion by O-Tsohi. Clearly we have entered a realm where Lone Wolf's sword may not be able to defend him and his son.
(101) "Abe-No-Kaii" finds the master poisoner taking a more active role in the effort to kill Ogami Itto and Daigoro. Along the way, he captures a ninja assassin sent by Retsudo Yagyu, which ups the ante on their conflict as well. But the emphasis here is on the series of traps set for Lone Wolf and Cub.
(102) "A Taste of Poison" shows the ruthlessness of Abe-No-Kaii in trying to kill Daigoro, as he puts his most dangerous poison in a river just to achieve his goal, without caring about the consequences for everybody else who lives downstream. Meanwhile, the ninja assassin he captured becomes an unwilling pawn in the struggle between the master poisoner and Retsudo Yagyu.
By this point it is no longer surprising that even as we cross the 100th episode mark that Koike and Kojima continue to raise the level of their epic story (compare with what happened to Spider-Man when his comic hit issue #100). Not since father and son were separated for several stories have we had a similar "novel." With the introduction of Abe-no-Kaii and O-Tsohi we finally have a couple of supporting characters playing major roles in a series of stories instead of the long stream of one-short appearances we have been seeing for the most part. But behind Abe-no-Kaii and Retsudo Yagyu, there is the Shogun (who we finally see in this volume) and who may well be the final obstacle in Ogami Itto's guest along the Assassin's Road.
Deeper into the Abyss.......2002-05-21
A taste of poison is aptly named. The Yagyu are diminished, yet not defeated. Having exhausted his personal retainers, staff and any others under his direct control - Retsudo is directed by the Shogun in a previous volume to eliminate Lone Wolf at any cost. He is now given access to the Shoguns own retainers, in this case - a master poisioner.
Thus far all of those tracking Lone Wolf have had some sense of dignity, honor... but this is an all new character. The sense of loathing and vileness is exemplified in may aspects both the obvious (such as the character himself) and the less obvious (the way in which the story manifests its self). It would be a mistake to lable the graphic nature of this issue as being harsh or out of character... on the contrary - it's brilliant in being able to introduce new feelings at such a late point in the story line.
Fabulous - all LW&C readers will enjoy.
Finally in Edo.......2002-05-13
The Lone Wolf is now in Edo but the Yagu is the least of his worries.
The Shogun gives the Yagu its poisoner and he is a most contemptable creature that one finds one cheering for the Yagu against him. He is ruthless, cunning, controls the peasants for miles and is willing to kill thousands just to test out Ito.
As a rule the Lone Wolf and Cub series once one gets past the first few books young kids should stay away this issue is even more so. It crosses some lines that if it wasn't for the quality of the series I would object more.
High quality, can't wait for the rest.

Test Your 80's knowledge!.......2002-06-20
This book was a real flashback to my adolescent/young adult years. I always considered myself quite an 80's buff (hence my e-mail address), but after taking these tests, I found my knowledge was sadly lacking in many areas that I loved and thought I knew so well. This is a great book for taking a trip down memory lane.
Brilliant.......1999-04-28
Need I say more
Absolutely hilarious.......1998-05-11
I couldn't stop laughing. Anyone who was at least semi-conscious during that odd decade called "the 80's" will love this book.
A definitive, clever look at the 80s!.......1998-03-10
I had the pleasure of working on this book and I can truly say it's one of the smartest and most hilariously written books that I've come across. I mean, a Steve Guttenberg logic question is nothing short of brilliant! I thought I knew a lot about the 80s but Mr. Sellers has me bested by a long shot. If you want to test your knowledge of short-lived TV shows and one-hit wonders, this is the book for you. Forget The Wedding Singer, the PCAT is the definite word on the glorious neon decade that was the 80s!

Customer Reviews:
The best book on films I've ever read!.......2000-12-01
I'm a film buff and have read lots of histories of film as well as books about how films are made and this one is far and away the best. It is a fully detailed, extremely well written account of all phases of the movies--from the magic of movies to the business of movies. A particularly interesting feature is interviews with people in all aspects of the movie biz from producers, to screenwriters, to directors, to editors, to cinematographers, to casting directors and so on. It's also thoroughly illustrated....some of the stills are priceless. This is simply a "must have" addition to any serious film library.
Book Description
Covers the beginning material in the Introduction to Violin Video using many diagrams and exercises to emphase good bowing technique and learning to play in tune.It then progresses to specific fiddling techniques using songs like You Are My Sunshine, Wildwood Flower, Amazing Grace, Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Boil Them Cabbage Down, Cripple Creek, Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms, Soldier's Joy, and Old Joe Clark. All songs are written in Standard music notation and played at two speeds on the accompanying CD (slow for practice and up tempo for performing). This is the perfect tool for the beginning fiddler.
Customer Reviews:
A good start.......2003-01-26
I used this collection to get me up to speed on Fiddle music, and it did the trick. The songs are laid out from easier to more difficult. While it helped me get my feet under me, I'd have to say that there are a few weak points that I'd be remiss not to mention.
In the first place, the accompanying CD while long, isn't very well done. I find the playing uneven and really quite unenjoyable. I would hope that authors of such books would want to show how wonderful these songs can sound (played at a slow, even tempo).
The songs themselves are kind of all over the place but there are some good ones. What I didn't particularly enjoy were the exercises included before each song which consisted of snippets of the more challenging bits taken from the song itself. This type of exercise can be improvised on ones own and doesn't need to take up space in a book that could have included more songs if not for these exercises. In fact that's probably my biggest criticism: that the book is so lightweight. It took me too little time to become bored with it, a problem that could have been remedied with more songs and fewer exercises.
But as I said, it got me going on the way to playing more rewarding fiddle music, and for that, I give it its 4 stars.

Customer Reviews:
The book is too basic for experienced investors.......2007-05-24
If you are new, this book might offer more insights, but for the experienced investor there was very content to justify buying it. The only gem I took away from this was preparing a presentation binder on a property for a bank when seeking financing.
Great info on how the loan process works.......2007-04-09
This is much better than his cash flow book. Really provides insight about the borrowing process and what lenders expect. Great for understanding the terms. Covers Loan to value, Debt Coverage ratio, Different types of lenders and uses. He compares zero down deals, all cash deals, and the mix of both and points out the real deal of all the scenarios. Also gives good instruction on how to be prepared when going to a lender.
This book is not motivational type at all. Just facts and info about what I mentioned above. It made a lot of things very clear to me. A must read if you are not familiar with the loan process and terms.
Lakewood, CA.......2006-12-28
Buy this book and the "What every real estate investor needs to know about CASH FLOOW" by the same author, you are well armed in the field of commercial real estate. Both books are easy to read and you will learn a wealth of practical information that can be put to use immidiately. I don't normally write comment for books I purchased, but these two books are special. It is my way to say thanks to the author.
One of the better real estate investment books.......2006-02-03
No fluff or filler, this book tells you what you really need to know in concise and certain terms. It's a refreshing break from all the "No Money Down" motivational seminars in book form. This is the real stuff... highly recommended. After reading the first few pages, I got back online and bought his Cash Flow book.
Excellent Book.......2005-10-17
I read this book as a follow up to Frank's other book, "What Every Real Estate Investor Needs to Know About Cash Flow".
Overall, I found the book to be an excellent summary of analytical ways to evaluate your alternative investments in real estate.
The book contains numerous tables, reference charts and tools that one can use in analyzing investments.
Frank has a unique [i.e., simple) way of taking the reader through an analysis or example of what otherwise would be a complicated discussion.
Again, all in all, a great book. I refer to it frequently. Highly recommend it.
