            Book Description

Historic Rings presents a world-class collection of almost eight hundred rings spanning four continents and four millennia. Perhaps the most intimate form of jewelry, these miniature art objects not only encapsulate traditions and customs throughout the ages but also evoke the most personal
feelings of the owners for whom they were made.

Introduced here for the first time in English, the Hashimoto Collection is extraordinary in its richness and breadth. The earliest pieces, including superb artifacts from ancient Egypt, Etruria, Greece, and Rome, are followed by European rings from the medieval period through the Renaissance and up
to the nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, all of the major trends, artist jewelers, and designers are also fully represented.

Historic Rings features many rare and valuable pieces, such as an amethyst scarab set in a gold wire hoop with beads at the shoulders dating from the second century b.c., which is the only extant example of its kind in the world. Ring with symbols, portraits seditieux, and locks of royal hair evoke
the political struggles in France from the revolution of 1789 up to the establishment of the Third Republic in 1870. Some rings represent political affiliations, religious beliefs, or personal sentiments, and many are set with exquisitely carved cameos or intaglios, or with precious stones. The
dazzling creations of such master jewelers as Harry Winston, Van Cleef and Arpels, Cartier, and many more demonstrate the fascinating artistic trends of the twentieth century.

With one thousand four hundred photographs, all the rings in the Hashimoto Collection are illustrated in black and white, with the majority also shown in color, and supplementary illustrations evoke their historical contexts. Styles and conventions of ring design are described, with explanations and
anecdotes given for many individual examples. Furthermore, details of provenance, as well as where each ring was purchased and the price paid for it, are provided. Lavishly presented, Historic Rings will appeal to all admirers of jewelry, and its scope and wealth of information will make it an
invaluable resource for scholars, experts, collectors, and dealers.

The Bush Junta: A Field Guide to Corruption in Government is an historical account of the high crimes and misdemeanors of the presidential administration of George W. Bush, as told by an international assemblage of world-class cartoonists. Also included are profiles of the key players in the current administration, a rogues gallery including Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, John Ashcroft, Condoleezza Rice, and Karl Rove.

Contributors to this historic comics documentary include: Alejandro Alvarez, Jaime Crespo, Kim Deitch, Jeremy Eaton, Bill Griffith, Scott Gilbert, Albo Helm, Ted Jouflas, Mark Landman, Carol Lay, Scott Marshall, Paul Mavrides, David Paleo Nunes, Ethan Persoff, Aleksandar Zograf, Larry Rodman, Spain Rodriguez, Marcel Ruyters, Kenneth Smith, Carol Swain, Seth Tobocman, Penny Van Horn, Mack White, and others.

5 out of 5 stars An anthology of 25 cartoonists who lampoon the Bush dynasty.......2004-11-08

The Bush Junta is an anthology of 25 cartoonists who lampoon the Bush dynasty. Made all the more biting from its heavy reliance on literal fact, these stinging, wordy black-and-white parodies candidly reveal the records, actions, and foibles of the GOP with razor-keen wit and no-holds-barred cynicism. A series of bumper-sticker flyers that can be reproduced and distributed enhances this timely and critical attack on alleged abuses of govermental power, among other presidential, political, and personal failings.

5 out of 5 stars A sobering, cutting edge look at unadulterated walking evil.......2004-09-29

Kind of along the lines of "The Big Book of Scandal", only focused on one subject, "The Bush Junta" pulls no punches in dissecting a perilously evil cabal of chickenhawks commonly known as Bush's Cabinet.

Hilariously illustrated by such artistic geniuses as Ted Rall, Scott Marshall, Ethan Persoff, the late, great Hack Smith and others, "Junta" chronologically deflowers arguably the most villainous political monarchy of modern times; starting with the infamous Prescott Bush/Nazi connection. It moves on to the Skull & Bones years and then in one of the most chilling chapters, pulls the wool off of GHWB's incredibly corrupt CIA tenure.

More disgusting and very true tales of deceit, corruption and flagrant neo-fascism follow, from the warwhores of the dying-empire stenched PNAC; the collection of shady reptiles known as the Carlyle Group; John Ashcroft's suppressive and incredibly bigoted years as Missouri's attorney general and governor; the megalomaniac warmonger and former Saddam cigar-buddy Donald Rumsfeld; Condoleeza Rice, the supposed genius who ignored a ton of pretty damning intelligence reports that could have thwarted 9-11; and finally, the chief snake and puppetbastard of them all - Dick Cheney.

It's no secret or suprise that the key players of the Idiot-in-Chief's cabinet got their start or influence with the Nixon Administration. Most of the information presented here is probably not new to those that follow underground radio and internet sites. But for those who think the . . . er . . . "liberal media" (meaning, Faux News, which is about as liberal as your average John Birch member, GE-owned NBC, Disney-owned ABC, Viacom-parented CBS and CNN, which has turned into "Faux Jr." (rolls eyes)) is the be-all, end-all of truth and fairness; for those who are open-minded and won't brush this off as "more commie libtard lies" (it's backed by hundreds of footnotes, statements, excerpts, links and direct quotes, BTW), this will be a blow to the stomach like no other.

At the very least, "The Bush Junta" will make you seriously question why this administration isn't telling you everything you need to know, why the biased cookie-cutter cable media will not call them on the issues that they have failed so miserably at and why you ever trusted your government in the first place.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The World's Greatest Gate Crasher.......2007-08-22

I first heard of Dion Rich on a local radio station. He talked about his book and the events he had crashed over the years. About 2 weeks later I met him at a auction for the San Diego Sheriff's Museum. He walked up and offered 5 books for the auction along with several pics of events he has crashed.

His book is a quick and fun read. This is a man who crashed 32 of the first 33 Super Bowls (he missed Super Bowl 3 due to being on a planned vacation). He drove the NFL nuts with his crashes to the point where they setup a sting and threatened the man. His book has stories about crashing the Academy Awards and pics of the people he met there as well as many other events. It's an incredible man and a series of incredible stories.

            Buy the book.

            Book Description

In 1922, an early association of film publicists known as the Western Associated Motion Picture Advertisers (Wampas) hit upon a strategy to call attention to their organization and their industry. The group selected 13 young actresses with potential star power and promoted them heavily as "Baby" (meaning junior) Stars. To be selected a Wampas Baby Star soon became a much-sought honor-a ticket to recognition and publicity in those days before the Academy Awards.
While a few Baby Stars (Ginger Rogers, Joan Crawford) went on to superstardom and others enjoyed modest success, some failed to shine. Many of the nearly 150 actresses chosen during the program's existence, 1922-1934, are forgotten names today.
This book offers full biographical details on every actress selected as a Wampas Baby Star. Each actress's entry traces her career and lists films in which she appeared. A year-by-year section lists each year's stars and alternates. Appendices include lists of rivals and successors to the Wampas Baby program (such as the "Paramount Protges"), Wampas "Drop-Outs," presidents of Wampas, and miscellaneous facts about the Wampas Babies (which actress was tallest? Shortest? Oldest at time of selection?). Photographs, a bibliography and an index are included.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and illuminating.......2001-01-17

As a longtime researcher of the Wampas phenomenon - the yearly selection of worthy would-be starlets 1922-1934 - I was actually prepared to dislike this book by Roy Liebman. To my great surprise, I truly enjoyed it instead. Cramming a somewhat slim volume with facts of all the selected "babies" - from Joan Crawford to Maryon Aye - Liebman seems to have left no stone unturned. Naturally, you will not learn everything you want to know about, say, Clara Bow or Ginger Rogers, but The Wampas Baby Stars is a very handy first step. And you will not find fact and filmographies of Helen Cohan or Flora Bramley anywhere else. As an added threat, Mr. Liebman also discusses the wannabe Wampas selections of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. All highly entertaining and well illustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Log this book as a good one.......2005-01-02

The back of the book includes a witty epigraph by none other than Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln notes "For those of you who like this kind of a book, this is that kind of book you will like." The tautology rings true! What kind of people might like this book? If you're interested in the history of log cabins, Erbsen provides an interesting historical context for these types of buildings. He cites current authorities in vernacular architecture and even critiques some of the myths of the log cabins. He replaces the inaccurate ideas about log cabins with good information about the cultural context that supported these constructions. There is good information about cabin-raisings, ways that musicians "fiddled up a cabin," and the various construction techniques used in a range of buildings. The book provides special attention to ways in which log buildings continue to provide important themes within old-time fiddle tunes, ballads, and bluegrass music. The book includes the words and music to a number of ballads and folksongs, and readers will also appreciate the way that Erbsen included mountaineers' proverbs, folk-speech, and even recipes. I also like the presentations of clever tall tales, legends, and other narratives that pertain to the life of those who lived in these types of houses. Even though Lincoln wasn't born in a log cabin that he built with his own two hands, the book does provide a good understanding of the types of cabins that Lincoln actually lived in. It even includes some of the actual ballads that he sung as a youngster. As Lincoln stated, this book will appeal to people who like this kind of book: namely, those with an interest in the folklore and history of rural America.

4 out of 5 stars Sounds and lives of Pioneers.......2002-11-04

As one would expect from a Mel Bay book, Log Cabin Pioneers includes easy playing music for the amateur guitarist or pianist, or for not difficult playing on any treble clef instrument. Captured in less than a dozen measures, the accessible melodies have simple keys and no chord more difficult than a 7th. Several verse of lyrics accompany these songs. However, such music is just the songs of "Stories, Songs & Sayings." The text is strewn with colorful aphorisms from the pioneer period. Examples are "Better a lame donkey than no horse" from 1854 and the undated bit of meteorological advice, "don't stand in the sun if you have butter on your head." The stories come in two varieties. We get homesteaders' tales, like "The Shrinking Britches" and a swindle worthy of Huckleberry Finn, "What has 4 Eyes, 3 Heads, and 2 Tails?" But, we also get the stories of the songs and pioneers themselves. The stories of the people cover their fashion, building techniques and more - including methods to hide a still. Stories of the songs give the reader insight into the history and meaning behind "Darling Cory", "Mary of the Wild Moor" and more. All this material is arranged topically by section: Cabin History, Pioneer Construction, Log Cabin Music, Whiskey Making, Cabin Kids, Home & Cooking, Pioneer Beauty Secrets and Log Cabin Ghosts and Lore. More entertainment and information can be had in the pioneer slang glossary that defines such obscure archaisms as explatterate (to crush or mash) and "light and hitch" (come and visit).

5 out of 5 stars Enhanced with 143 vintage photos.......2002-02-06

In Log Cabin Pioneers: Stories, Songs & Sayings, author Wayne Erbsen takes the reading along on his personal journey of finding and restoring an historic log cabin. There the reader is treated to authentic pioneers yarns of such log cabine pioneer notables as Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone, as well as tales of bear hunting, moonshine, even advice on how to buy a mule! Then there are the songs sung by our pioneer forebears, and such pioneer staples as house raising, log hewing, husking bees, frontier remedies for ailments, superstitions, romantic advice, and an old-fashion barn dance. The entertaining and informative text is enhanced with 143 vintage photos, along with the words and music to nineteen pioneer era songs. Log Cabin Pioneers is a unique and wonderful addition to any personal, school, or community library American history collection.

5 out of 5 stars Really great stuff.......2002-01-31

I bought the book to help my 4th grader with a school project. I "censored" it a bit, as it does contain stories of moonshine, guns, and other such adult topics. But both my kids loved the funny stories and my daughter used a song from the book as a pioneer project. Everyone loved it, and the project was a snap. A really interesting and funny book.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-12-17

This is an excellent guide. I wish this had been around when I started playing (about 30 years ago). It would have been helpful for both me and my parents.

It does not cover how to play chess, which is good. Seems like every other starter book insists on it. It would be inappropriate in a book like this, so I was glad to not have to skim through that again.

The book does an excellent job of covering all the other aspects of playing chess: learning, clubs, tournaments, Internet, competition, etc.

                  Excellent choice.

I know this book was writen more for a parent. So my parents got this book for them and the book Winning Chess Tournaments for Juniors for me. However, we both ended up reading both books and we both liked the Winning Chess Tournaments for Juniors Book a lot more because it covered a lot more important information and was simply more enjoyable to read. Don't missunderstand me, A Parents Guide to Chess is a fairly good book, it is just I feel the newer one has simuler material, and more and is just a lot better. I acually recommend getting both!

This is truly a unique and wonderful book. Parents and players new to the world of scholastic chess will find an incredible treasure trove of advice here on everything from tournament registration, to school club participation, finding a chess coach, and much more. ...

The main audience for this book may be the parents and kids but any scholastic tournament director, floor judge, or other volunteer active in the scholastic chess world will benefit greatly from reading this book.

Get the benefit of guidance from one of America's leading chess instructors. A Parent's Guide to Chess is about how to open up the world of chess for your child, whether they aspire to become a Grandmaster or if they simply want a way to meet kids with a common interest. The number of books on learning or playing chess is astronomical. (Get "Chess for Dummies" if that is what you're looking for.) This is the only book I know of on finding rewarding outlets for that knowledge. I would also highly recommend Dan Heisman's "Everyone's 2nd Chess Book" once your budding prodigy has learned the basics of the game.

If you just want to teach and help your child learn and excel in chess, this book isn't something you want. I'm from Slovenia, Europe & I bought Dans book ... and I was very dissapointed. First off all, this book is deffenetly not for Europeans as it talks about organised chess in the US & Canada. The book is essentially about how to get your kid a coach, how to get him into a club, a tournament and something on chess etiquette. I found practically nothing useful on teaching chess to my kid. I was (and still am) looking for a book on how I should do the best job at teaching my kid to play chess. And this book just isn't what I hoped for... BTW, I'm a cca. 1750 ELO player...

                  Book Description

This text approaches Project Management from a holistic, balanced perspective. The text is developed around a philosophy of a project-driven organization committed to continuous improvement and organizational learning. The text is holistic--it directs attention to the needed linkage between projects and organizational strategy. Many project management textbooks emphasize the technical aspects of the subject, while providing scant attention to the human element in projects. This text succeeds in redressing the balance by treating both the technical and the behavioral aspects of the subject in nearly equal parts. Such a balance is possible because of the complementary backgrounds of the authors: Gray, a specialist in project management systems with an operations background, provides strong technical coverage of project management. Larson, whose professional background is in organizational behavior, brings a distinctive behavioral perspective to the subject.

It seems that many people didn't like this book, but I used it for a class on PM & found it to be pretty good. I had no prior knowledge of the field. I really liked the accompanying Student CD-ROM for study & review of the material. I used the Microsoft Project trial CD-ROM & found that extremely useful also. I would recommend it as introductory material.

There are phrases and questions that worded very poorly. Many times I have to re-read a section 3-4 times to try to decipher. Many of the questions do not apply or correspond the text.

The exercises in the back of the book have not connection to the actual material. Quite often the reader is left to searching the Internet or consulting the teacher to fill in the gaps.

This is a very poorly written book, and will likely cause more confusion than it educates.

It seems like this textbook has gotten bad phrase and for no good reason. This book is a college level textbook and is perfect in conjuction with appropriate teaching. A person can not simply book pick up this book, skim through a few chapters and expect to understand the management process without being taught by a professor. My advice, go to college and learn the process properly.

As the market-leading textbook on the subject, Project Management: The Managerial Process, 4e is distinguished by its balanced treatment of both the technical and behavioral issues in project management as well as by its coverage of a broad range of industries to which project management principles can be applied. It focuses on how project management is integral to the organization as a whole. The 4th edition reflects the latest changes found in the practice. Other texts discuss the topics covered in this text but they do not view oversight as the project manager’s operating environment, as does Gray/Larson.
