Book Description

The remarkable story of Jonathan Lerman, a young artist with autism, seized the attention of the art world at the 2002 Outsider Art Fair. Coverage by The New York Times, The Today Show, 48 Hours, and other international media has brought him into millions of homes across the country. This selection of fifty drawings, with a text by critic Lyle Rexer, presents the full range and astonishing growth of Jonathan's extraordinary talent.

Diagnosed with autism and at first scarcely able to communicate, Jonathan began drawing at age ten. By age twelve, his drawings were exhibited in a solo exhibition at K. S. Art in New York. Working with the assurance of a Matisse, the speed of a Picasso, and the humor of a born cartoonist, Jonathan has created an unforgettable body of work. His drawings include portraits of actual figures as well as figures from his own imagination, all rendered with great acuity. These drawings overturn the stereotype of the so-called savant artist as an unchanging talent sprung to life fully formed. Instead, they detail the restless experimentation and rapid growth of an artistic sensibility.

Jonathan Lerman: The Drawings of a Boy with Autism is a book not just for art lovers but for everyone who values the rich diversity of the creative imagination. In addition to an illuminating essay on Jonathan's work, the book also contains an afterword by Caren Lerman, Jonathan's mother, describing the sudden appearance of his talent and the challenges and satisfactions of raising a gifted child with autism. 50 b/w illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars His drawings are his words!.......2003-01-10

This is a well done book! It gives an insight into what Jonathan is thinking or feeling at times, where words would leave anyone's midsts. Jonathan is a member of our community here in upstate New York and we are more than proud of him - he is the spokesperson for all the other children who are as affected by autism as he is. Jon's mom, Caren, is often the one parents turn to when they don't know who else to call. She and Jonathan are the pioneers in this area when it comes to dealing with the issues of autism. When Jonathan first started drawing, it was literally an view for the first time in what he was feeling, and I am proud to say that I was invited into his world through his drawings. Thank you Jonathan!

While the photographs are quite lovely, many of the captions accompanying them contain incorrect dates and countries of origin. I do not recommend this as a learning reference, but it may be worth having as a general overview of fan styles.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Tieri should have taken a left at Albuquerque... .......2006-03-12

Either author Tieri should have taken a left at Albuquerque or done something else radical, because in comparison to his usual brilliant work this is a sad and pitiful deviation. Set in a `Days of Future Now' netherworld, this book fails to capture the simple rawness of the short lived Weapon X series or the sophisticated despondence of the Days of Future Past. What it has is worn characters that are worn thinner, art that falls short of Sear's best, and a confusing, meandering plot that never should have been green lighted.

Though called Days of Future Now, in reference to Claremont's Days of Future Past, this possible future does not tie into Claremont's. It also diverges away from current X-Men continuity (is there such a thing anymore) and leaves us in some sort of grey zone as to what in the heck is going on.

I am sorry for Tieri that Weapon X got cancelled right as he was doing his best work, and I respect the fact that he was entitled to a final say on the project. If anything, this feels like he pulled out of his notebook what he wanted to have happen 100 or 200 issues into the series, and wrote these 5 issues. The problem is we don't have the intervening issues to help fill us in.

All and all, both Tieri and Sears hand in sub-par performances. Don't walk away from this book, run away and spend your money on Claremont's original Days of Future Past, or even one of the two graphic novels to collect Weapon X. Better yet, get Barry Windsor Smith's Weapon X. Just DON"T BUY THIS BOOK!!

    Book Description

America's famous teenage stalkers of stupidity are back! From the authors of You May Not Tie an Alligator to a Fire Hydrant, here is a collection of 101 of the dumbest product warnings you'll ever see.

The infamous 1994 McDonald's hot coffee lawsuit has spawned a veritable industry of "hot" warnings, from Kellogg's Pop-Tarts admonition that "[i]f pastry is overheated, frosting/filling can become extremely hot and could cause burns" to the Black Cat Fireworks label: "Caution: flammable. Do not put in mouth." If, on the other hand, you manage to escape the heat with a trip to the beach, be warned that a twenty-inch beach ball is "NOT a lifesaving device." Kids (and maybe even parents) might be forgiven, however, for thinking that Mr. Bubbles Body Wash for Kids of All Ages would be okay to use if they missed the warning label: "Caution. Keep out of reach of young children."

In the brave new world of technology, users frustrated by the gobbledygook of users' manuals will be relieved that their warning labels at least make sense: the Sun StarOffice End User License Agreement warns users that "software is not designed, licensed or intended for use in the design, construction, operation or maintenance of any nuclear facility," while the SGI IRIS Indigo Workstation manual tells you, "Don't dangle the mouse by its cable or throw the mouse at coworkers." And for those who just can't quite figure out what to do with some of their new purchases, this might help: "Use Gold Dial as you would ordinary soap" explains the Dial soap label.

Compiled by Jeff Koon and Andy Powell, this hilarious collection features the best contributions from the hundreds of thousands of fans of their Web sites, www.dumblaws.com and www.dumbwarnings.com, and forty-two original drawings by illustrator Tim Carroll.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Short, Cute.......2005-12-20

This book offers a few laughs and memorable Warning Labels, but is too short to really be enjoyable. Some of the Labels are cute, and you can spend time wondering who actaully did some of the ridiculous stuff in there, but the book ends far too soon. You get about 30 good lables out of the 101, that's about it. I read through it in about 20 minutes, then gave it as a gift the next day.

3 out of 5 stars Cute, but that's about it.......2004-03-13

We all know that there is a plethora of items out there with ridiculous warning labels on them. Everything from the hair dryer that warns you not to use it while in the shower to the contraceptive jelly that warns against ingestion. This is the litigious nature of our society. Some of the warnings in this book are truly funny, a few will get a chuckle out of you, but most are just kind of blah. More fun is to go out and find the ludicrous warnings yourself and then try to imagine the person/people to whom these warnings are directed. It will likely make you wonder how the human race has survived this long and just how much longer we can make it.

2 out of 5 stars Get it from the library, if you must get it.........2003-06-21

I borrowed this book from the library expecting a lot more. Too much more, maybe. It reads like one of those meditation-a-day style books with a meditation (dumb label) on each page and really isn't very funny. Sure, there were a few good cracks on really dumb labels, but for the mostpart I felt that the authors were far reaching into labels that had every right to be attached to the particular product. I found myself thinking.. "What's wrong with that?" and "I understand why they have that label there".

Who knows.. maybe I've become immune to labels in a country where everyone is suing everyone else!

      Book Description

"The difficulty for men or the impossibility for women of living up to patriarchal society's ideal order is the very stuff of melodrama," writes Robert Lang in this daring work on what the author sees as the central genre of American film. Lang contends that the true melodrama is essentially an Oedipal drama--a dramatization of the ways in which we are all formed within a matrix of familial imperatives. As he interprets them, these imperatives are often crippling reflections of patriarchy. Revealing how melodrama both submits to patriarchal ideology and confronts it, he believes that we can learn from it either how to be happier on its terms--which are the terms of life in Western society--or how to find our way out of the familial labyrinth.

Lang traces the development of melodrama in the first fifty years of the American cinema by offering detailed interpretations of Griffith's Way Down East, The Mother and the Law, and Broken Blossoms; Vidor's The Crowd, Stella Dallas, and Ruby Gentry; and Minnelli's Madame Bovary, Some Came Running, and Home from the Hill. Drawing on the insights of Irigaray, Kristeva, Deleuze and Guattari, Peter Brooks, and several contemporary film theorists, he focuses on the psychoanalytic aspects of the films to bring us new insights into the way we live our lives.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The object of its own description........2002-10-29

Much work remains to be done to rescue from academic dismissal on the grounds that it is "melodramatic" not just a significant body of film but of literature and music as well. But the author of this book-polemic ignores the aesthetic while politicizing the theoretical. His representation of gender roles in the "world at large," moreover, is no less Manichean than the narrative worlds that are the subject of his discourse. Women suffer under "patriarchy" (mainly because Lacanian theorists and the likes of Catherine McKinnon say so), and the oppressive power relations evident in cinematic melodrama should make us want to address life's gravest problems, which can all ultimately be traced to the rule of patriarchy.

This book may prove useful to a few readers as an introduction to some major currents in 1980s French post-structuralist theory, but it falls far short in addressing the aesthetics or pleasures of the texts it examines let alone the challenging field of "music drama."

The shelf life of your favorite board games just got longer. R. Wayne Schmittberger--game inventor and frequent contributor to Games magazine--has canonized the house rules and variations of a plethora of games in this fascinating book. Imagine playing Toric Scrabble, where words can go off the right side of the board and "wraparound" to the left. Or how about a round of Tactical Nuclear Risk, where each player is given a couple of bombs to lob at enemy territory?

And if changing the rules isn't enough for you, you can change the object of the game, as in Extinction Chess, which is played exactly like normal chess except you lose if your opponent captures all of your pieces of a single type. Losing your king will still cost you the game, but so will losing your queen, your two rooks, or even all eight pawns!

Schmittberger has long been considered an expert of games, and he lives up to his title in this engrossing volume. New Rules for Classic Games contains not only clever twists on popular board games but also the rules for dozens of pastimes playable with common equipment, and even a section devoted to games that can be played with nothing more than a pencil and paper. This book is great in its own right, and it will give those board games that you have lurking in the closet a new lease on life. --Matthew Baldwin

            Book Description

Extinction Chess: Think of every type of piece as a species; your goal is to prevent extinction of any of these species. 5 out of 5 stars I'll have mine with a twist!.......2000-10-25

In this book we see games we have played many times, and have (maybe) become bored with, revitalized with clever ideas, enhancements and suggestions from the author. As an example, consider the section on balancing non-symmetric games (such as Chess and Go which have an inbuilt first person advantage). Bidding, simultaneous playing of two games and the ingeneous "I'll make a move and then you decide whether to play black or white" idea where one player makes a move that the other player has to decide is bad or good are suggestions that are useful not just in the context given, but in the design and evaluation of all games. Recommended for anyone who enjoys, studies, reviews or designs games -- especially strategy games.

5 out of 5 stars A textbook on bringing new thinking to old games.......1999-11-18

Wayne Schmittberger is a longtime associate of Games Magazine. It's a lot of fun to tinker with games to see how they change. The growth in Chess Variants is just one aspect of this. He explains those well, along with variants on Go, Risk, Monopoly, and many other games. He introduces many games you probably haven't seen before. All of them are great games, too! If you are considering designing a game of your own, or if you just have a collection of games, you need this book.

5 out of 5 stars I Wish There Were More Books Like This.......1997-12-14

This book is excellent. This book will open a gamer up to new possibilities and ideas. Lots of variants on common games like chess.

            2 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2006-01-04

There is some good information in this book, however most is simply common sense. What I did not like about the book is that it is written in a negative tone that implies all workers are slackers. I'm sure there is something better out there and I will look for it.

4 out of 5 stars When you think you are in over your head..........2003-07-22

This book was helpful for me to consider ways to address certain touchy topics. New to supervising, I did not want to give my employees an opening to exploit. No book will solve all problems, but this one did help me through some tough times.

            3 out of 5 stars Great!.......2000-06-10

A must have for any new manager or supervisor. Provides great advise for almost any situation you may find yourself in. Read it through and keep handy for reference!
