Book Description
Artwork by Kerry James Marshall. Contributions by Cheryl Harris, Richard Powell.
Book Description
For painters faced with the metaphorical death of painting, the way forward has indeed been puzzling. nevertheless, the territory continues to be explored. As Luc Tuymans put it, iPainting is a way of thinking and constitutes an enormous archetypal pattern which artists constantly fall back upon.i The Undiscovered Country addresses, through 84 stunning reproductions, the ability of painting to tackle issues of representation now that, in the broader culture, the representational function is occupied almost exclusively by photography. Chronogical, it begins in the 1960s with paintings by John Baldessari, Fairfield Porter, Gerhard Richter, and others, which range in approach from painterly to conceptual. The argument continues with figurative painting from the 70s by Philip Guston, and proceeds via influential paintings of the 80s and 90s by Thomas Lawson, Kerry James Marshall, Luc Tuymans, and others. Also discussed is a group of younger contemporary painters including Mamma Andersson, Mari Eastman, and Thomas Eggerer. The Undiscovered Country does not position painting as a threatened medium, nor as one unjustly underrated, but instead looks carefully at the work of a number of painters who have thoroughly examined their own practices, and who continue to find approaches to representation that can only be resolved through painting.

Book Description
The remarkable talent of the artist Kerry James Marshall has already earned him a coveted MacArthur "genius" award and inclusion in recent Whitney Biennial, Carnegie International, and Documenta exhibitions. Marshall's art is provocative, eye-catching, political, and rich in literary and historical allusion. With this vibrantly illustrated monograph, which includes text by the artist himself on his development and on individual artworks, Abrams proudly introduces Marshall's work to a much wider general audience.
Marshall's lyrical, Matissian images of the contemporary African-American urban experience are layered narratives of social order and disorder, of memories and myths. Gathered here are over 100 drawings, paintings, collages, stills from video projects, and installations. Literature lovers will find that Marshall's art recalls the work of Ralph Ellison, and those interested in social history and the civil-rights movement will see depicted-in poignant, dreamlike scenes as strange as they are familiar-the everyday experiences of black Americans.
KERRY JAMES MARSHALL is a painter, photographer, printmaker, and installation artist whose work is in private collections and major American museums such as the Art Institute and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Studio Museum in Harlem and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He has been production designer for several films, including Daughters of the Dust. Marshall lives in Chicago, where he is professor of art at the University of Illinois.
TERRIE SULTAN, curator of contemporary art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., often writes and lectures on contemporary art.
ARTHUR JAFA is an artist and independent filmmaker in New York City.
110 illustrations, 68 in full color, 9 x 103/4"
Book Description
In Kerry James Marshall's Rythm Mastr comic strip, an urban superhero battles the forces of evil using a combination of futuristic and traditional African accoutrements. This graphic narrativization is a stylistic update of Marshall's best-known work, monumental paintings of African-American subjects based on the traditional genre of narrative history painting. In One True Thing, the catalogue accompaniment to Marshall's first solo show in five years, the artist presents a multi-media range of new work that demonstrates the evolution of his ideas and his ongoing commitment to issues of construction and interpretation of meaning. The body of work Marshall is developing for the book and exhibition centers on the idea of ambiguity surrounding the representation of African Americans in our culture. Stemming in part from the Rythm Mastr comic strip project first developed for the 2000 Carnegie International exhibition, the monumental paintings in this new body of work portray figures in the urban landscape of the South Side of Chicago, inspired by the tradition of old-master paintings, especially the townscapes of Canaletto. Marshall is also creating several photographic series depicting urban settings along with a group of figurative works based on African tribal sculptures.

Book Description
With nearly 300 illustrations and an accessible text, Chinese Clothing: An Illustrated Guide presents 600 years of the development of Chinese dress, from the beginnings of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to the present day. While providing a full treatment of Imperial robes and textiles, the author also documents several areas of costume design overlooked by earlier writers, such as children's wear, rural clothing and wedding and funeral attire.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference material.......2000-05-04
This is a good book for someone interested in historical research on Chinese costume. I personally find photos even more informative than text. Unfortunatly for me this book is heavy on text. Although there are a number of good photos, there still are not quite enough for my taste.

Bring on the Bad Guys!.......2006-08-16
There are two sides to every story. Sure, the Red Skull always seems like a bad guy, but isn't that really because we see him in stories about Captain America? If we read a story featuring him in a story, would he come off looking better? Actually, no. The Red Skull is a villain no matter how you look at him. But that doesn't mean he can't star in a story every now and them. In The Essential Super Villain Team-up, we get to see him and other villains as the stars of the stories instead of supporting characters.
Actually, the title is a bit of a misnomer. For one thing, the majority of stories feature only two characters, Dr. Doom and the Sub-Mariner, and, misanthropic as he may be, the Sub-Mariner is not really a villain. Secondly, the characters are only intermittently teamed up; typically, they are at each others throats. Any alliances we see among any of the featured villains are purely a matter of expedience and will lead to betrayal at the first opportunity.
Misnamed as this collection may be, it does feature a few good stories. My personal favorite is an ironic two-parter featuring Dr. Doom and Magneto. The story opens with Doom having achieved his goal - he has taken over the world - and he is instantly bored, which will precipitate his eventual defeat. Interestingly, however, most of the stories are not all that thrilling; while the writing is okay, these super-villains lose their aura of mysterious evil when they become the protagonists and are thus diminished.
Perhaps the best that can be said for this collection is that demonstrates that not all villains are equally evil. The Sub-Mariner isn't really evil at all and Doom is driven more by arrogance than pure malice. At the other end of the spectrum, the Red Skull is wholly unredeemable. For fans of the Marvel Universe, this is a relatively minor book, definite three star fare. Intriguing as the title may be, this should not be your first choice for an Essentials book.
At last, at last. .......2005-04-16
I've always found this title to be one of the more interesting of Marvel's ideas. To me the villians are what always caused me to keep coming back the next month, so this naturally drew my interest. I'm only sorry that it didn't have a longer run.
The last two issues (with the Red Skull and the Hate Monger) are the best of series and they are certainly the most vicious.
Ride on Victor Von Doom's time machine back to the 1970s!.......2004-12-22
It may be surprising that the editors at Marvel even bothered to release this collected edition, but I'm very glad that they did! The Essential Super-Villain Team-Up is one of those rare gems that will remind you of a time when Marvel routinely dared to try different concepts.
The first section of the book is devoted to the Dr. Doom solo stories from issues 1 through 8 of Astonishing Tales, from 1970 and 1971. Doom shared the pages of AT with Ka-Zar, but the jungle hero's tales are NOT included in this volume. (Maybe they'll publish "The Essential Ka-Zar" in the future.)
Originally published erratically from 1975 to 1980, Super-Villain Team-Up began as two quarterly "Giant-Size" special issues in 1975. Sales warranted a bi-monthly series, which ran for 17 issues from 1975 until 1977. It was later "revived" for two issues in 1979 and 1980. All of these are collected here, with the exception of SVTU #15, which was just a reprint of two of the AT stories.
Filling out the volume are three issues of The Avengers (#154-156) and one issue of The Champions (#16), all of which were crossover issues with SVTU in 1976 and 1977.
Although the cover of this trade paperback only features Dr. Doom and the Sub-Mariner, you will find several other venerable Marvel villains, including the Red Skull, Magneto, Attuma, Diablo, Arnim Zola, and Satan himself! Plus guest stars like the Fantastic Four, the Shroud, Henry Kissinger, Jimmy Carter, and even Adolf Hitler!
This book has a lot going for it, from the stunning art of Wally Wood on the first four Astonishing Tales, to the single greatest Dr. Doom tale ever ("...Though Some Call It Magic!", by Conway & Colan, AT #8), to the death of the Sub-Mariner's first love Betty Dean, to the bizarre yet compelling alliance of Nazi villain the Red Skull with Hitler himself!
If this Essential volume has any weaknesses, however, one may be that the stories do not flow together as well as in other volumes (ex., Essential Amazing Spider-Man) simply due to the nature of the original publication. Although the comics reprinted here were "starring roles" for Doom, Subby, etc., SVTU was more about action and treachery than characterization. The early AT stories and the Doom/Namor alliance saga are exceptions, but the last 1/3 or so of the volume seemed very hit-or-miss to me.
Likewise the art is inconsistent. You have some great work by Wood, Colan, George Perez, Sal Buscema, but I also had to sit through a couple of real stinkers where the pencil work looked like a teenager's try-out samples. However, if you enjoy seeing a variety of artistic styles, especially in the "mighty Marvel manner" of the 1970s, this might not bother you at all.
All together I would rate The Essential Super-Villain Team-Up as a solid 85 out of 100, and I'd recommend it to any fan of superhero comics. If only for the opportunity to experience what Marvel was like in the '70s --- either as a younger reader who never had the chance to own these obscure issues, or as a long-time fan wishing to read them again and again!
Get this one to see Wally Wood's version of Dr. Doom! .......2004-10-08
This one compiles a lot of little known classic work of Roy Thomas, Tony Isabella, Bill Everett (Sub Mariner creator) and most of all we get to see Wally Wood's version of Dr. Doom! Also Incredible Hulk artist Herb Trimpe's art is in a few issues.
That made the book a real treat. We get to see what he might have done if he were the artist behind one of Marvel's great villians. It features an unlikely team of two of Marvel's most misunderstood characters. Sub Mariner; who played villian and hero on and off depending on the writer, and Doom who was such an interesting personality. Both of them have to ironically fight nemesis like the Red Skull who want to conquer and overthrow their territory.
This title never became what the hero inspired Marvel Team Up with Spider-Man became. It would have survived if Doom had teamed up with other villians than the ones in this volume. Perhaps a team up with Doc Ock from Spidey might have helped?
With all the old Marvels of the sixties and Seventies making a re-appearance this one is a must buy. So much so that I hope that this is the start of new revival of the Doom legend.

This hilarious adventure into the mind of an everyday dog will delight dog lovers. Illustrated with colorful woodblock prints of a black Labrador retriever (based on artist Stephen Huneck's own dog, Sally), this book captures the true spirit of doghood. Each portrait reflects another important doggy pursuit: food, socks, hogging the bed... Of great importance in the dog's day are petting and loving; dog ecstasy is perceived as a good belly rub. The latter half of the book, entitled "The Two Hemispheres of the Brain," portrays the amusing clash of emotions dogs are surely faced with each day. A dog brain has two hemispheres--the good dog portion and the bad dog portion. Dogs frequently fight the bad dog side: good dog wants to drink water from his bowl, bad dog wants to drink water from the toilet bowl--unfortunately, bad dog often wins. My Dog's Brain is a delightful book of conjecture about the workings of a dog's mind.
Book Description
Stephen Huneck's labrador, Sally, makes her inimitable publishing debut in these woodcut prints that illustrate the enduring concerns, pleasures, and existential dilemmas of dogs--and of their human relations. Sally is sensitive, loyal, and loving--but also a realist. Faced with the deep moral quandaries of a dog's life--shall I sleep on the sofa, snag a morsel from the kitchen counter, or stick my nose into other people's business?--she favors immediate gratification. After all, a dog's virtue can only endure as long as its owner doesn't bark too loudly or withhold the affectionate scratch behind the ears. Sally's human may be feted for his charming illustrations, but Sally--sleeping with her eye half open--is an immortal canine everydog, whose pictures make a gift to warm every dog-lover's heart. Stephen Huneck is an internationally acclaimed painter and sculptor, whose work often incorporates animals. His work has been widely exhibited and is included in important museum collections, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of American Folk Art. As he explains in his Introduction, Huneck began the series of woodcuts after suffering a near-death experience in which the very desire to make the prints, as well as the life-affirming messages they convey, figured profoundly in his recovery. He lives in Woodstock, Vermont.
Customer Reviews:
Enter Into The Canine Psyche.......2006-07-26
This book features Stephen Huneck's brilliant canine wood block prints. The book is colorful and suitable for all ages: kids will love the whimsy it offers, while adults will enjoy the sly insights into canine mental processes. The introduction of the book explains how Huneck overcame a nearly fatal illness with the help of his dog, a black Labrador Retriever named Sally, setting the tone for his deep appreciation for dogs.
The prints are very entertaining and thematically fall into sections called "The Parts of the Brain," "The Two Hemispheres of the Brain," and "The Powers of the Brain." While I loved the whole book, I really liked "The Powers of the Brain," as I think it has the most insight into the minds of pets, and dogs in particular. I especially appreciate the prints "They sense when you are going away," and "They know when you need love."
This is a great book not only because it's fun, but because it deals with the bond between people and their pets so effectively. I highly endorse this book and give it five unequivocal stars.
Fun, interactive helpful read.......2005-09-23
I use this book in my work doing animal assisted interventions with at-risk children. The kids love learning how a dog's brain works - or more likely how dogs are driven to pleasure-seeking behavior. The pictures can also be pretty powerful - particulary the page "good dog" and "bad dog" with the split brain - this is very helpful teaching children about how our brain actually divides itself at times under stress. When I explain this in the picture - the kids feel so much better about themselves. Great work!
A Must for any Dog Owner.......2001-01-17
The diagram of Sally's brain is great, just how I imagine it. The illustrations are wonderful and his love for animals really shows through.
I love this book!.......2000-09-26
I can pick this book up and get a good belly laugh every time, without fail. If you own a lab, or any dog, you will relate 100% to the thoughts and antics of a dog from Huneck's perspective. It makes a great gift for dog lovers.
A joyful book! A must for every dog lover........2000-04-22
This book is both funny and touching. It gives us a look behind the curtain into the complex mind of man's best friend. The artwork is fresh and enlivening. Our whole family loves this book. We keep it on our coffee table and look at it when ever we need a chuckle.

Book Description
This new textbook is an abridgment of the author's earlier Woody Allen's Angst: Philosophical Commentaries on His Serious Films (McFarland, 1997; invaluableChoice.)
Five main topics are explored: the desire of many of his characters to ground their lives in traditional ethical values despite their realization that such values may no longer be certain; the opposition between pessimism and optimism throughout his films; gender issues relating to romantic love, sexual desire, and the ongoing changes in our cultural expectations of both men and women; the idea that contemporary American society is rapidly descending into barbarism precisely because of societal failure to maintain a sense of individual moral responsibility; and a critique of psychoanalysis as a method for understanding human behavior.
Customer Reviews:
Analyze This........2005-08-31
You've got to be alive, awake, and alert to get everything Mr. Lee has to offer you from this book. He doesn't miss any of Woody's tricks (whether Woody himself put it in his film consciously or unknowingly), and he doesn't get involved in the private life of Mr. Allen either. Sander is strictly business.
I read this book several times, as its contents surpass science and spacial relations in terms of how much one can fit in a book so small. If you put a book in water and it floats (which, I believe, is what happens when one puts a book in water) then Mr. Sander Lee's book would sink like a proverbial stone. And if reading the book in the States it would go all the way to China. Anyway, i found it best to view a specific film (let's say Stardust Memories) and then follow the viewing with the chapter dedicated to said film (in this case, Stardust Memories). Because if you saw the films like, oh I don't know, a decade ago, it's just not going to work out for you. Cause Sander is a genius. And you probably aren't.
Buy the book. Watch the movies (except Hollywood Ending, Anything Else, and Curse of the Jade Scorpion of course).

Legendary Voices

It's notoriously difficult to describe music (and the act of music-making) with words, but few people spend as much time and thought on how to do it as professional singers; there's a lot to be learned from them. In this sequel to Legendary Voices, Nigel Douglas continues his examination of the lives and work of great singers of years past, in a book that will be helpful both to fans of the art form and to those who hope to be the great singers of years to come.
Book Description
A follow-up to Nigel Douglas's popular and succesful Legendary Voices, this volume boasts twelve more singers, their private lives and public careers, plus critical comment on their recorded works now available on CD. Once again his pantheon covers the full range of voices and the whole repertoire from Tosca to Tannhauser, from Lieder to light operetta. Artists include Maria Callas, Feodor Chaliapin, Kathleen Ferrier, Beniamino Gigli, Maria Jeritza, John McCormack, Lauritz Melchior, Claudia Muzio, Titta Ruffo, Elisabeth Schumann, Conchita Supervia, and Richard Tauber.
Customer Reviews:
Great repertoire book for club player.......2002-05-22
This is an excellent, eminently practical book. Schiller has been accused of churning out books, but this one comes across as a labor of love. It is an excellent blend of text and variations, and he really gives you a feel for the Reti opening. There are lots of good reasons to play the Reti; the flexible first move, Nf3; the avoidance of queen's gambit theory; the avoidance of traditional approaches to the king's indian and grunfeld. In that sense, the Reti allows you to largely call the shots as to the direction of the game. This book has a special magic for the club player who wants to play the opening--one can get started almost right away, as you do not get bogged down. In that sense, the book is simpler than many opening manuals. But there is as much depth as I need, and one feels that one has a coach along for the ride in Schiller. He has great enthusiasm for the opening, and includes some of his notable wins, but he does not sugarcoat it either. The book is also very well made and solid, and is a pleasure to work through. All in all, a great chess book.
Pressure with Hypermodern Systems as White.......2001-01-03
If you are of USCF playing strength 1600 to Master level, I believe you will find this book interesting (surprisingly interesting, I should say). The book gives solid examples of how hypermodern opening systems can ellicit poor play by black (primariliy due to apparent black non-familiarities with resulting non-classical and/or hypermodern opening structures). The non-familiarities inevitably lead black into inferior positions. The book also provides sound theory against solid black defensive systems adopted against white playing a hypermodern opening. In becoming intimately familiar with the Reti-System as outlined in this book by Schiller, you will find yourself going (1-0) against players who are rated several hundred points above your current USCF rating. I can attest to this because I have done so myself utilizing theory presented in this book! I must warn that if you are not a patient player, using the Reti system is probably not for you. Black will occupy the center until pawn breaks at e4,d4,c4 or even b4 will destroy the stronghold. The fact of the matter is simply this; Because there is still much to be learned about hypermodern play and inventions, the competitive player can prepare lines using these systems where black will be caught off-guard. I have also found much success in 5 min. blitz games with the Reti opening. I simply attribute this to too many players being comfortable with common/classical opening play.

PERFECTION.......2007-06-13
Book arrived quickly and in perfect condition.
Praise from a Dummy.......2007-03-23
I really needed this book....a well-organized, concise how-to reference guide for fundraising dummies! It provides essential knowledge and a broad overview of how to organize, how to proceed, and how to avoid problems. I have now ordered several copies for board members. If you are a fundraising novice with limited time or just getting started and want a handy desktop reference, I would strongly recommend this book.
EXCELENT.......2006-06-27
I used to work for the Capital Network Libraries of my city. I was in charge of making fundraising strategies and projects. This book HELPED a lot. It will help you from making a project through other topics as getting to know your donor, cultivating major givers and writing winning grant proposals.
Fund Raising for Dummies.......2005-12-17
All is good in this simplified examination of fund raising--certainly excellent for the novice. I do challenge, however, the single comment on page 180, that appeal letters should be "short and sweet." To get nominal response, this may be true, but for those wanting to impact donors on an emotional level, a comprehensive "case for support" (as displayed in well-written appeals), letters must be at least three pages, four being even better. Readership is not the point--it's response that counts and all research from longer letters prove that length is best. Please be careful about "Gimmicks" in appeal letters. Be honest, tell the story of one person, touch the heart of readers, and watch the funds pour in.
Building blocks.......2005-10-02
"Fundraising for Dummies" will not give you a Masters degree in Non-profit Management, but it does contain EXTREMELY valuable and assorted information all under one cover that used to take quite a bit of research and pavement pounding to track down. Save that pavement pounding and learn what types of fundraising are going to work the best for you, and how best to employ them. Like the title states, this book is geared for folks who may not have any previous experience with fundraising, or may need a refresher on old standbys and new avenues.
There are many avenues available to organizations now, and this book breaks each down for its strengths and weaknesses, as well as how to employ them, many of which many folks may not have even considered to be viable. Everything from bake sales to preparing for and writing grant proposals, as well as everything in the middle, can be found in the chapters of "Fundraising for Dummies".
Whether you are looking to buy new little league uniforms, set-up an online donation portal for a local community center, or are pursuing grants for a national level non-profit, this book can substantially help you understand where to start, how to evaluate which forms of fundraising will work best for you, what leg-work needs to be done before you can hit the ground running, how to gauge what aspects your team can handle and what aspects you may need to hire a prefessional to handle, fundraising ethics, and what follow-up you need to do AFTER the fundraising to keep donors "writing checks" for long term endeavors. The writing style is straight forward, accessible and quite enjoyable, without talking over/down-to the reader. A very worthwhile investment for the return-potential!
