5 out of 5 stars These fish are funny.......2004-07-09

These are not your typical cuddly cartoon characters. Sharks eat other fish--and people--with regularity. (The fish refer to people as "hairless beach apes.") But they carry on like people most of the time: ordering from catalogs (Sharker Image), watching TV, taking trips to exotic (for them) places. The guy who writes this has a really funny turn of mind, and each character has a well-developed personality. Take a look at the current strips at www.slagoon.com if you want.

5 out of 5 stars Tickle your senses!.......2003-08-22

Once in a blue moon there comes a cartoonist and character that just tickles every part of your senses. This does not happen very often in this genre as the talent to illustrate, deliver the punch line, maintain a sense of civility and not insult the reader's intelligence has to be done all at the same time. Calvin and Hobbes was one. Sherman's gang is another. Enjoy this before this gets shelved forever into the museum of pure intelligent humor. Did I say intelligent?

As an advice columnist for The Washington Post, Carolyn Hax has gained a fanatically loyal following in print, online, and over the airwaves with very direct, humourous take on matters of the heart. As the number of people seeking her advice surged she began to notice certain recurring dilemmas and snags in the accounts of affairs gone wrong. As she puts it, "The letters I receive form a virtual catalogue of the most counterproductive ways to interact with other human beings. With this in mind she has put together a handbook of the commonest mistakes made during the pursuit of love.

        5 out of 5 stars A very good choice.......2006-06-09

This is the only "relationship book" I would recommend without reservation to anyone, of any gender/age/sexual orientation combination you can think of. Carolyn covers--with humor, compassion, and common sense--all of the mistakes that so many of us make when looking for luuuuuuv. Actually, just about everything she says could easily be applied to any kind of relationship. She has a lot of good stuff to say and she's totally unpretentious. This is a readable "relationship" book that actually applies to real people in real situations. Who knew?

5 out of 5 stars What not to do.......2004-01-01

Unlike some of the other reviewers here, I was completely unfamiliar with Carolyn Hax before reading this book. Here, she comes across as wise, witty, funny, realistic--and yes, a bit unapologetically preachy and moralistic, but in a good way. There's good advice here for any woman or man whose love life is less than 100% satisfactory. It's mostly obvious, common-sense type stuff, but there are plenty of people who need to hear it. (And yes, I found a couple of words of wisdom here that I personally need to take to heart.) This is the kind of advice that your best friends would give you, if they were smart enough to see it and foolish enough to risk offending you.

        2 out of 5 stars "Yes mother...".......2003-12-19

You know, this book is okay... I mean, it brings up some good points, but Carolyn Hax ended up really annoying me. The whole time, it seemed like she was looking down her nose at me, like she was far more superior. No one wants to read a book that makes them feel stupid. I found her comments not witty, but petty. I don't want to be reading something that tells me not to do stuff all the time. It's never fun to be told what to do and when to do it. If I wanted that kind of treatment, i'd hang out with my mother.

Parts of it are good, but if you're looking for a book that helps, look elsewhere... or learn your own dating philosophy, because Hax's seems to be nothing but rules, rules rules.

1 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Hypocrites!.......2003-01-29

Physician, heal thyself. Hax was fun to read years ago when she first started her column, but she's grown tired and predictable. She wondered why she caught such hell when she and her husband divorced shortly before announcing she was pregnant and engaged to another man. She actually wondered. She needs a good advice columnist to straighten her out. I don't recommend she look for one in this book, though.

4 out of 5 stars Advice columnists are not Gods.......2002-01-09

I'm one of those "devoted fans." Hax has said in her chats and column that she and Nick are spliting - that's where the info comes from. But more importantly, a divorce does not disqualify an advice columnist. A person who lives life well is not incapable of making mistakes. Actually, if they were, their advice would stink.

The presentation of a lifetime achievement award to Elia Kazan at the 1999 Oscar ceremony was one of the most controversial events in American movie history. Kazan's theatrical résumé includes the original productions of The Skin of Our Teeth, Death of a Salesman, and four of Tennessee Williams's best dramas. For the screen, he created Pinky, A Streetcar Named Desire, East of Eden, Baby Doll, A Face in the Crowd, On the Waterfront, Wild River, and America, America. But during the red scare, the master director named names before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, ruining the careers of several of his contemporaries.

How could the man behind such thoughtful and sensitive masterpieces betray his friends? What is the relationship between an artist's personal life and his public vision? While Kazan spoke to these questions in his stunning, epic autobiography, Elia Kazan: A Life, this interview-based book offers new insight by focusing the conversation on the director's professional life. As Kazan responds to Jeff Young's probing queries, we vividly experience his uncompromising independence, determination, and strength of will.

Regarding the success of his most legendary film, Kazan says:

When I started On the Waterfront, I was what they call unbankable. Nobody would put up money for me because I had had a series of box office failures.... I had a hell of a time raising money, but I respond very well to difficulty. If somebody makes trouble for me, I come flailing out in every direction. One of my happiest moments was when I got the Academy Award for On the Waterfront.... It was especially rewarding because we had made something out of nothing.... All of a sudden no one cared what my politics were, that I was controversial, or difficult or that people were slamming me all the time. After On the Waterfront, I could do anything I wanted. That's Hollywood.

This volume provides readers with an exquisite opportunity to examine the mind and work of a major artist--including details about Kazan's collaborations with Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, John Steinbeck, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Gregory Peck, Katharine Hepburn, and many others--as well as the chance to experience the creation of some of the century's most indelible works of art. --Raphael Shargel

        Book Description

First time in paperback--Selected by the Los Angeles Times as one of the Best Books of 1999, these never-before-published interviews conducted in the early 1970s prove to be "an invaluable addition to film scholarship, [which] allows aspiring filmmakers to study the working methods and wisdom of one of our greatest artists." --Martin Scorsese. Illustrated with 72 photos and 19 original movie posters, this fascinating book conveys the essence of Young's hundreds of hours of interviews with Kazan, featuring a summary of each film plot and a discussion of 18 of the director's films in his own words, concluding with Young's commentary on Kazan's final film, The Last Tycoon.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A must-read.......2004-01-12

This is quite simply fascinating... It should be required reading for anyone interested in Kazan's work... Jeff Young has done us all a great service in providing this unique examination of the art of one of the greatest directors of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Good insight into Kazan's films........2002-08-17

Elia Kazan was one of the most important film directors of the late forties to early fifties. Besides blazing a trail as one of Broadway's top theatre directors, Kazan also established himself as a top Hollywood director. His films helped blaze new ground covering social themes like anti-semitism (Gentleman's Agreement), racism (Pinky), corrupt unions (On the Waterfront), and the abuse of television (A Face in the Crowd). Films like "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "Baby Doll" challenged the censorship of the day with their depiction of raw sexuality.

Kazan also pioneered the use of cinematic realism with his location shooting and the realistic performances of his cast through the use of "method" acting. Kazan would be responsible for launching the careers of Marlon Brando and James Dean.

However all these achievements have been overshadowed by Kazan's appearance before the House Un-American Activitees Committee in 1952. Unlike many other moviemakers and actors, Kazan cooperated with HUAC and named names. One of the most high profile entertainment figures to turn informer, Kazan helped to consolidate the Hollywood blacklist of the 1950s. This has made Kazan arguably one of the most hated and controversial figures of the McCarthy era. As a result many people are uncertain of where to stand on Kazan.

In this book, reporter Jeff Young interviews Kazan extensively about each of his films. It's very interesting to hear a little about what it was like working with his actors and how he would coax great performances from them. Kazan was a very good actor's director in large part, I think, because he was good at empathizing with them and making them feel comfortable. Instead of telling them what to do as most directors would, he told them what to think and what to feel. It was touching hearing how when the neurotic James Dean came onto the "East of Eden" set, Kazan moved in to a trailer across from him to keep an eye on him.

It was also quite interesting hearing how Kazan got some of the ideas for his films. For instance, I didn't realize until I read it that much of the ideas for "On the Waterfront" were based on real cases and that the Terry Malloy character was based on a real person who worked on the docks. Nor did I realize that "East of Eden" was a semi-autobiographical film. "Wild River" (alas, to date never released on video), stemmed from some of Kazan's documentary work during the Depression, and "America, America" stemmed from the experiences of Kazan's Greek uncle's journey to the America.

People looking for insight into Kazan's decision to name names may be disapointed. This is not really an in depth discussion of those events, but a loving look at Kazan's films. However, in case you think that Jeff Young has fallen too in love with Kazan, there is a probing question that Young asks Kazan near the end of the book. Kazan has always claimed that he named names because he thought that Communism was a threat to America, not because he was interested in personal gain. However, Kazan doesn't seem to have been prepared for the specific question that Young has to ask him. Kazan's emotional response is quite revealing and manages to take some of the gloss off the way he portrays himself.

For anyone interested in Kazan, this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars For all students and fans of Elia Kazan films.......2001-05-23

Illustrated with 72 photographs and 19 original movie posters, Kazan: The Master Director And His Films is based on hundreds of hours of interview during the 1970s with master film maker Elia Kazan by Jeff Young who also drew upon his considerable experience and expertise as a writer, producer, and director, and former studio head for three major film companies. This impressive professional biography and analysis features a summary of each of Kazan's film plots and a discussion of 18 of the director's films in his own words. Of special interest is Jeff Young's commentary on Kazan's final film "The Last Tycoon". Kazan: The Master Director And His Films is well commended and highly recommended reading for all students and fans of Elia Kazan films.

4 out of 5 stars Kazan's sharp and sometimes irreverent take on his career.......2000-10-06

If you've read this far you may already know about Kazan's career as a filmmaker and Broadway director. But he is probably best known for his actions before the House Un-American Activities committee in the 1950s. Kazan named names. This had made him an enigma to the dominant Hollywood culture. Today, he is recognized as an important filmmaker in the history of movies, but his political views have made his life somewhat bumpy in his chosen profession.

Kazan proves to be erudite and witty and humorous and surprising. He openly hates some of his own movies, though reviewers consider them classics. He does love his version of a STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, which he also directed on Broadway. He speaks with some regret that he didn't also direct the movie version of DEATH OF A SALESMAN (another Broadway play he debuted).

That is just a small bit, but I would recommend the book to anyone interested in the politics of communism in the 1950s and its aftermath, or any film fan that likes to dissect film directors and their work. I am interested in both subjects and found Kazan illuminating on both.

3 out of 5 stars How he did it.......2000-07-04

(and did not). This is unfortunately not a good book about Kazan's career as a filmmaker, not even about his films. It contains no real biographical material on his life (10 paltry pages: "he is born where, his father was, studied here", do not justice to the life of a first class director). The reason is that Kazan was writing his own biography (some 800 pages) and Jeff Young was not supposed to infringe on the master's territory. But the films suffer as well. We have no idea, while reading this book, on what was "East of Eden" at the time it came out, we only hear Kazan's voice and Young's persistent questions, most of them too technical to interest even a concerned reader. No general view on the subject, no cutaways (interviews or whatever) on people who have worked with Kazan, not a word from Brando, nor any writer or producer connected with his work, nor even the critics of that time. There are only the obsessive questions Young asks Kazan, going through every single scene of some of his films ("On the Waterfront" has some 80 pages of "why did you do this" and "how did you do that") because the interviewer (a would be director) hoped he could learn his craft from the Master. He was met with the sternest objections (Kazan repeatedly proclaimed "there are no rules") to no avail. The only way to publish a book like that would have been to accompany the printed edition with a CD containing the scenes to which the text refers. As such indeed it would have been "an invaluable addition to film scholarship" as Martin Scorsese is supposed to have said. Without a full library of Kazan's films, this book remains incomplete, but (for scholars) it is still a dignified contribution to the knowledge and remembrance of Elia Kazan's work. PS: By the way: Why does no studio release "Baby Doll" in video? This is one of his best films, and apparently the one Kazan preferred.

                            Book Description

The most valuable people in and around an organization are often the most difficult to manage. They are the "elites" -- executives, highly educated professionals, investors, board members, experts in critical functions, and others -- whose special talents or positions give them unusual power and independence from those who seek to lead them. These influential individuals are not motivated by visionary speeches, by teambuilding sessions, or by a need to prove themselves (or keep their jobs). They are important assets to the company -- but only when their strengths can be harnessed and aligned with organizational goals. Leading Leaders shows the reader how to develop one-on-one, up-close-and-personal relationships with these movers and shakers, and how to leverage their expertise for better decision making. Rather than top-down processes that might apply in a typical leadership hierarchy, the book establishes processes that resonate with these very special "followers," including negotiation, strategic planning, brainstorming, and more.

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing little book on leadership.......2006-04-05

This refreshing little book on leadership takes an unusual tack by focusing on how to lead leaders. This kind of leadership, says author Jeswald W. Salacuse, is different from all others. However, he explains, leaders occur at every level of an organization, so managers throughout the hierarchy will find his principles applicable. Salacuse's core idea is that you must discover the interests of those you wish to lead and then make it clear to them that you are serving their interests. This requires listening, personal attention, framing your objectives in their terms, and respecting their freedom and autonomy. Salacuse illustrates his ideas with examples drawn from history and contemporary politics. We recommend adding Salacuse's book to your leadership library.

1 out of 5 stars Get past the title and it's all a sham.......2006-03-31

I walk in to Barnes & Noble nad stroll over the Business section and there is a new book with a catchy title and subtitle; "Leading Leaders", "How to manage smart talented, rich and powerful people"

What you get is more of the Communists News Network (CNN) useless diatribe on how the war on terror and Iraq are failures and that the President can be held in contempt because we have the freedom of speech.

Mr Salacuse writing style is both reckless and irresponsile.
                            What a farce.

Jeswald Salacuse is Professor of Law at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. From 1986-1994, Professor Salacuse served as The Fletcher School's Dean. He also served as Dean of the School of Law at Southern Methodist University. In addition to his role as a higher education leader, he is a specialist on international negotiation and international law. Dr. Salacuse is an independent director of several mutual funds and a member of the Steering Committee of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.

Much of today's literature on leadership use sports or military analogies. Indeed successful Generals and Coaches often command premium speaker fees to speak to leaders about leadership. The presumption is that there is a technique that can be used to "inspire" "mobilize" "energize" and "direct" players to work together for the sake of the team.

Such programs can indeed be of value in hierarchical work systems.

But what about law firms, investment banks, accounting firms, physician practices, Boards of Directors, consulting firms, higher education and research organizations? Do these military-type models of leadership work?

Dr. Salacuse argues that leaders in professionals firms must "lead leaders" and not "troops" or "employees" or "players." By leaders, he refers to people who have an independent power base outside their organizational roles. That power base might be the marketability of their own talents, their network of contacts, their stature within their professions, their wealth, their ability to access clients/funding sources.

This book asks how can a leader lead leaders?

Dr. Salacuse employs political metaphors rather than military or sports analogies to make practical points. He reasons that politics is the art of managing other leaders who have their own power base and are not necessarily dependent on the leader.

He has a fascinating chapter on "the medium sends the message" and uses the different managerial approaches of President George H.W. Bush versus President George W. Bush to illustrate the concept. In organizing a coalition to go to war against Iraq, George H.W. Bush spent considerable time on 1:1 discussions with the phone with leaders. He appealed to the unique interests of each leader one at a time and used the phone as the primary communications tool and himself as the primary communicator. In seeking to form an alliance to go to war with Iraq, George W. Bush, on the other hand, delegated much of the communications role to others. He used broad appeals without customizing the message 1:1. Dr. Salacuse argues that the father represents the model for how to engage other leaders while the son represents the model for how not to do it.

In my own experience with CEOs who get fired by their Boards of Directors, I often find that these CEOs saw 1:1 conversations with Board members as side-track issues that prevented them from managing their companies. They often did not find the time valuable and it showed in their dealings with Board members. They preferred 1:1 chats with the Chairperson combined with memos and reports to everyone else on the Board. They felt that they could inspire the group at Board meetings rather than to use the Board meeting to ratify what had been worked out quietly in 1:1 conversations.

Dr. Salacuse has a fascinating chapter on how to make stars into a team. As a good negotiator he turns the topic upside down and asks leaders to first look at the issue from the perspective of the professions within the organization: how much should I allow integration to happen and how much should I allow this integration to damage my professional goals? This is the followers' dilemma. And leaders of professional service firms need to explicitly address making stars into teams by looking at the followers' dilemma first.

There are practical leadership suggestions for dealing with talented spoilers and how to constantly remind people about their common organizational history.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable New Perspectives for Today's Leaders.......2005-11-19

The typical leadership book is filled with the same old techniques that leaders can employ to inspire, direct, persuade, and monitor the activities and results of followers. The premise of this book is different: leading leaders is a special skill, distinct from leading followers. Salacuse, a well-respected law professor and former dean of law schools at Tufts and Southern Methodist Universities, has done a fine job with this volume.

Even without all the great advice about working with the elite, with the experts, with the cream of the crop, the slam-dunk for me was the fascinatingly insightful comparison between the leadership styles of two people who held the same job at different times. Readers will thoroughly enjoy and benefit from Salacuse's side-by-side presentation of George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush. What dramatically different styles of leading leaders! The full-blown contrast of the two men was one of the most instructive lessons I've read in any management or leadership book. The theme was carried out through the book, gently reminding the reader that there are different ways of leading leaders...that will produce different results.

Readers accustomed to the ubiquitous List of Seven somethings that crop up in far too many books will not be disappointed. Salacuse gives us Seven Daily Tasks of Leadership. You'll learn how Direction, Integration, Mediation, Education, Motivation, Representation, and Trust Creation enable leaders of leaders to build meaningful one-on-one relationships with respected colleagues to generate success. Plenty of examples from various fields give the reader all sorts of personal connections.

You'll gain a lot from this book. Highly recommended.
