4 out of 5 stars Review from a photographer.......2000-05-23

I bought this book last week from a mail order. However, I was kind of disappointed about this book as a young portrait photographer. 1) This book talks nothing about photography lighting. (Because of the name called "Light and Illusion") It only talks about Ray Jones' photography life. 2) The quality of the photos in this book is not very good (Except few of them have great quality.) I also read "Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits" which has very good quality of pictures. (I am not too sure that is because George Hurrell always used 8x10, 4x5 camera so his picture quliy in that book is consistency). Anyway, this is my opining.

5 out of 5 stars An Insider's Look At The Glamour Days of Hollywood.......1998-07-22

During the 30's and 40's, Hollywood helped America climb out of the Depression by painting glamourous fantasies with stars who were larger than life. As the head photographer at Universal Studios during this important time in American history, Ray Jones was instrumental in creating and defining this "Glamour Era" of Hollywood. The book goes into some detail about how Jones created his special look, but the true joy here is thumbing through the numerous examples of Jones' exceptional talent. The photos span the three decades of Jones' carrer in Hollywood (from the 30's to the 50's) and the featured stars read like a Who's Who of Hollywood. Also featured are Jones' six Acadamy Award-winning photos (the award has since been discontinued) including a memorable one of John Wayne. For those who long for the good ol' days of Hollywood, this is a wonderful look at how the stars were made.

Well written, well described, really nice ideas.
Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Knitting on the Edge: Ribs, Ruffles, Lace, Fringes, Floral, Points & Picots: The Essential Collection of 350 Decorateive Borders.......2007-02-06

It's OK. I bought it, but could have lived without it. The sections include: Introduction, Texture, Size, Notes, Ribs, Ruffles, Lace, Fringes, Flora, Points & Picots, Patterns, Stitches, Abbreviations, Techniques, Acknowledgments, & Recourses.

This is an excellent book for beginner or intermediate knitters. Experienced knitters would have already used many of these ideas in their self-designed knitted project. It's a nice reference book for them.

2 out of 5 stars Where are the corrections????.......2006-12-18

There are many mistakes in this book...and it is poorly written. Patterns should be more clear. One person stated she couldn't find any errors...well I beg to differ with you, so far every pattern I've started has errors and have not been able to complete either project because of them. what is up with P1 P5...????? why not p6????? I do not understand that and have never seen it before....crazy

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring book to use as a springboard for your knitting imagination.......2006-12-09

After much deliberation, I decided to buy the three Nicky Epstein books in this series (On the Edge, Over the Edge, Beyond the Edge). Each of these books are just gorgeous, filled with color illustrations of each border or design on glossy pages. In essence, I'll be reviewing all three of the books together, but focusing on this one since I'm currently doing a border from it.

While I'd heard of Nicky Epstein (if you're into knitting, I don't see how you couldn't!), I waited about a year before buying her books, and I'm glad I did. I needed the time to become a better knitter. I consider myself an advanced beginner or an intermediate knitter, and I don't think these are books for beginners. For one thing, they're not meant to be pattern books. There are very few patterns included in them (and the ones that are there are pretty scary looking! When I was first learning to knit I would have given up, because they're very complex-looking). The author assumes that her audience would know how to do some of the more advanced stitches used in her border patterns, and that they would also have some experience under their belt to figure out how to use her borders in bigger projects like sweaters or blankets or whatever.

That being said, I'm taking a star off because it's really hard to find errata for this book on the internet. I had to do some searching before I found a scant two or three corrections on the Vogue Knitting website. I spent two days working and reworking a specific border (the Serendipity, p.83) before I realized that the numbers the author had listed for how many stitches the pattern worked over were wrong. As I continued in the pattern, I found other number errors in it. When I looked for corrections, I couldn't find any for that specific pattern. Since I know this book has been out for a while, I would hope that all the pattern errors would have been worked out in later printings. Other than that, a great book and totally worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Some mistakes not the fault of the author........2006-09-12

Sometimes not being able to work a pattern doesn't mean the book has a mistake. For instance, p.139 "Butterfly" does not have different numbers of stitches on each row. Notice that "Embossed Hearts" on the same page ends each row differently worded than does "Butterfly." If not read carefully, "Butterfly" would seem to say do the repeat as many times as required, then knit #. But it says to "end last rep k#." So the last repeat of each row ends with a different number of knit stitches than the other repeats in the row. I counted it out and it works.

I also checked several more throughout the book in response to another review that said the first row always required more stitches than were cast-on. In the couple dozen that I checked, none were wrong.

I understand this book has errors. But we must not be blind to our own and instead blame the author.

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Patterns.......2001-01-30

This book is really neat, with beautiful photos of the sweaters. Lots of colorwork, so you can use up your stash.

My only complaint is that there are no squares of the colors used near the patterns, so that it makes it difficult to match colors--you have to use the photos if you can't afford to buy the yarn used in the book, and yarn companies are always adding and dropping colors so color squares would help a great deal.

The sweaters have lots of colors in each row, so if you can knit backwards it is a big help. There are also designs for babies in here, as well as one mens' sweater.

This book needs to be in print again--even if you don't feel like doing an entire sweater, worked in worsted weight yarns you could make some nice pillows or afghan squares with these designs.

1 out of 5 stars Contains many significant mistakes.......1998-06-17

Readers and knitters should be aware that this book contains many significant mistakes. For example, one pattern gives exactly half the quantities of yarn required. In another, the pattern placement is wrong and you only find this out when you're half-way through. In yet another, the number of stitch repeats is incorrect. I wrote directly to the publisher pointing this out and got a very unhelpful reply, and I've seen no erratum slips or corrections in later editions. Take great care - the designs are attractive, but you could waste a lot of material and effort.

        Book Description

It was a big year for new relationships in the Patterson household. Wanting to avoid an elaborate, expensive wedding, Michael and Deanna married in secret and moved in together. Meanwhile, her mother continued to engineer a huge social affair, which threatened to upset an already delicate relationship between the two families. When Elly helped her reluctant daughter-in-law choose a dress, it brought them closer together-as confidantes and friends-and in the end, the wedding was beautiful.Meanwhile, Grandpa Jim began a slow, sweet courtship with Iris, whom he met at the Wednesday night Legion dance, and Elizabeth moved in with her boyfriend, Eric. She soon suspected he was not her knight in shining armor, and Anthony, the boy Elly and John always hoped Elizabeth would marry, becomes engaged to someone else. With This Ring gives readers more of what they enjoy most: a sense of connection, of being one of the participants in this humorous lifelike comic strip "saga." Like the many For Better or For Worse books that have preceded it, With This Ring is certain to be a popular best-seller.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another Great book ..........2007-03-30

Another Great book to visit the Patterson's with. "For Better / For Worse" has to be one of the best comic strips of all time. It really makes you think, "They are just like my family", and if you do not have kids, read the books so you know what to prepare for.

5 out of 5 stars Not long enough..........2006-10-23

I am a recent convert to the world of FBOFW, having really fallen in love with the strip when Michael and Deanne got married. I bought this booking wanting to learn more about this story arc. And while this book does cover a large portion of the story arc, covering a little before and during the wedding, I just which it was more complete. I would have loved to see only strips in the book that related to the wedding story arc. I also would have loved to see strips that led up to Michael and Deanne's courtship and Michael's proposal. In the world of FBOFW, there are two types of strips. The first is just some random joke, and the second is a strip that futhurs along a story arc that has been building, sometimes since the start of FBOFW. I wish this book only collected the 2nd types of strips, and did not have so much filler (the first type of strips.)

Don't get me wrong, this is a great book. I really love the "later" years of FBOFW, and am really looking forward to Liz's eventually marriage to Anthony. I just wish this collection was longer.

        5 out of 5 stars Continued Excellence!.......2006-03-27

Johnston's work keeps on pleasing! My wife and I (over 35) both enjoy these strips at least as much as our 11 year old.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2004-05-18

This has got to be one of the best For Better or For Worse books out there. The first part of the book begins with Lynn Johnston setting up the book, telling the backgrounds of Michael and Deanna, and what they went through to get to this point, which I think is an excellent way to begin. If you haven't read some of the earlier strips, this gives you all the background you would need. It also contained some information that would be good even for a die hard FBFW fan.

The book is in depth and contains all the strips from before and after the wedding. This would be a great present to give to someone who is getting married for a humorous take on the psychosis of getting married. Highly recommended!

        5 out of 5 stars With this Ring....a Triumph!.......2003-05-20

Enter within and witness the saga of Michael and Deanna's wedding. For all of you who have lived through weddings as a bride, groom or immediate family, you will easily identify with all the wedding preparations, conflicts and joys. The only thing I regreted while reading it was how grown-up Michael has become. However, I just pulled out an older book by Lynn and revisited. But think....only a great author can make you care about characters so much that you hate to see them "grow up." Cheers to Lynn and please keep them coming!

          Book Description

As a sensitive and intelligent look at Jarman's films, Dillon's book is essential reading, and offers a compelling examination of the life and work of one of hte cinema's most gifted artists, who created a new world for himself and his peers, a world of light, reflection, and desire.

          Film Quarterly

"Steven Dillon's rich, expansive book may be the definitive treatment of the work of Derek Jarman. . . . The book is well researched, well written, theoretically informed, and remarkably perceptive of the range and feeling in Derek Jarman's films."

—James Morrison, York University, Toronto, author of Passport to Hollywood: Hollywood Films, European Directors

Derek Jarman was the most important independent filmmaker in England during the 1980s. Using emblems and symbols in associative contexts, rather than conventional, cause-and-effect narrative, he created films noteworthy for their lyricism and poetic feeling and for their exploration of the gay experience. His style of filmmaking also links Jarman with other prominent directors of lyric film, including Pier Paolo Pasolini, Andrei Tarkovsky, Jean Cocteau, and Jean Genet.

This pathfinding book places Derek Jarman in the tradition of lyric film and offers incisive readings of all eleven of his feature-length films, from Sebastiane to Blue. Steven Dillon looks at Jarman and other directors working in a similar vein to establish how lyric films are composed through the use of visual imagery and actual poetry. He then traces Jarman's use of imagery (notably mirrors and the sea) in his films and discusses in detail the relationship between cinematic representations and sexual identity. This insightful reading of Jarman's work helps us better understand how films such as The Last of England and The Garden can be said to cohere and mean without being reduced to clear messages. Above all, Dillon's book reveals how truly beautiful and brilliant Jarman's movies are.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Scripture of Lyric Film.......2006-03-21

Reading Dillon on film is like reading god on religion. To call it insightful would be a gross understatement. Highly, highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars fun game book, but difficult words for kids.......2006-07-17

I bought this gamebook for my children (ages 6,8,& 10) to keep them busy while traveling this summer. It is a fun and easy to use gamebook that requires only a pencil. However, the hangman words are difficult and inappropriate for young children. I was very surprised to see my daughter finish one of the puzzles resulting in the word "marijuana" and ask me what it means. Other words are difficult for children of these ages as well. ex. Genghis Khan and Saskatchewan. It would have been great if not for some of the words chosen.

5 out of 5 stars Superb resource book.......2007-05-03

I had this series of books before - loaned them out at work and never got them back (go figure!). Happy to have found them again here.

2 out of 5 stars Even company money could be spent more effectively.......2003-06-17

For any medium to advanced trainer, group leader, or presenter, this book does not raise any new methods of improving audience participation. In fact, the "cheese" factor is enough to choke even the most discriminating mouse.

Having said that, if you're a beginner with little to no background in or exposure to group training, then this book may help give you a little head start to realize how to engage an audience through active participation.

It's only because of the potential to aide a beginner that I rated this a 2. Otherwise, it's sitting with a lone star.

              4 out of 5 stars Decent.......2001-07-25

I was expecting more. But it certainly lived up to its title. Maybe my expectations were a little to hight.

I have yet to try any of the examples yet, but I am certainly waiting to try.

              2 out of 5 stars It's not that great........2000-01-30

This book wasn't that great. There were VERY few ideas that I would use. I wouldn't recommend buying this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great for any Organizational leader!.......1999-01-25

I used a bunch of ideas from this book for my position in a student organization. A definite must for programs on dry material. It never hurts to have an ace up your sleeve, and this book is it!
