5 out of 5 stars Best Wedding Gift Ever.......2000-02-13

"Celebrate" is the perfect word to describe the content of this wonderful testament to creativity inspired by love. Poems, stories, artwork, and photographs testify to the perennial energy we call love. It's a bargain at the price, especially for those who want to give a gift slightly off the beaten path of crystal, china, and siverware. The book itself is a large, impressive hardback ("art book"), with a beautiful cover. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A rare beautiful book.......1998-05-02

I just found this book at a book sale. It is like I have received a windfall apple. I didn't know what I was missing until I saw this. It is full of stories, quotes and fabulous art reproductions focusing on Love. The feeling you get when you look at and read this book is a profound longing for your loved one. It is really overwhelming. I was hooked from the author's introduction (and I rarely read the introductions). This book is a celebration of love between man and woman. Some of the stories are humorous sketches from authors such as Mark Twain, or poems from e e cummings or an excerpt from Hawthorn's Lady Chatterly's Lover. Overall, This book is a rare and powerful approach to such an awesome subject. (This would make an AWESOME wedding gift).

        Book Description

In a remote canyon in northern New Mexico the early morning stillness is broken by voices chanting praises to the Lord. And thus begins the daily cycle in the Godcentered life and search of the Benedictine monks at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert.Seeking God is a monastic tapestry. The daily life of the monks is interwoven with the seasonal changes and celebrations and the candid words of the monks as they speak of their life their hopes and doubts their hardships fears and joys their prayer. Weaving this tapestry together are the hauntingly beautiful chants songs of praise and reverence that echo through the darkness before dawn throughout the day through the solemnity of Vespers in the evening and Compline at night. The majestic beauty of the environment captured in every season reflects a peace and tranquility that becomes an integral part of this monastic tapestry. The high red rock walls of the canyon where eagles fly cradle the valley whose stillness is broken only by the flowing waters of the Chama River and the winds that occasionally funnel through. Seeking God presents the ongoing process of the monastic way through the words and activities of these Benedictine monks as they move through the day and through the seasons in their search for God through prayer work study and song.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for learning about the plain folk.......2006-11-06

The question asked by the title is thoroughly addressed by Mr. Scott in a very admirable manner of respect. With a heritage of plain dressing himself, the author necessarily focuses mostly on the people he is most familiar with. The book is thorough to a degree that is quite surprising - plain dress is complicated! There's a lot of information on practice as well as purpose, and the photos and diagrams are extremely imformative.

It is a rather poorly presented book. I think the publisher is to blame for photo quality that could have been better with a finer halftone screen. The paper choice combined with a magazine-like screen hampered the photos in my copy, and the photos are vital. It may simply be inconsistent print quality control, but this is an annoyance when I lay out good money for a book.

Overall, I have a very high opinion of the author and the book's content. This is perhaps the best book for anyone interested in the history and practice of plain dress.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2003-08-21

This book is a well written, sensitive look at one aspect of plain people's practices. Quite often misunderstood, this book explains the "reasons" behind the dress practices as well as the distinctions. It is my understanding that the author is not just writing this from an impersonal, analytical vantage point, but rather plain dress is a personal and important value of his being a member of the Old Order River Brethren in Lancaster County, PA.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2003-08-11

This book is a fascinating look at the various Protestant (mainly Anabaptist) groups that wear plain clothes, focusing primarily on the Amish, Hutterites and Old Order Mennonites. The author grew up in a nominally Christian home, but over the years he found himself drawn more and more to the commitment of the plain clothes Christians that he saw. Eventually he himself embraced the plain clothes style mode, and this book is his labor of love.

This book tells you everything that you might want to know about these plain clothes groups, including why they dress the way that they do, how they dress, and the differences that exist in the items worn by plain clothes people. Along the way, the reader is treated to many wonderful black-and-white pictures of plain clothes people.

Overall, I found this to be a fascinating and informative book. If you are interested in the plain clothes people, then I would have to say that you must get this book. It is an excellent resource!

3 out of 5 stars A lot of detail on the clothing............2003-01-08

This is a good addition to the library of someone studying the Old Order or 'plain people' groups. I have yet to find a more thorough breakdown of the different types of clothing worn by the four main branches of Old Order Anabaptist sects.

On the down side, the writing was not particularly well done and there were a few typographic errors. The section on Catholics and Hasidic Jews, though appropriate, were very short.

Despite the problems mentioned above, this is still a very good reference.

        Book Description

There is more than just blood between parent and child. Itto Ogami and his son Daigoro have seen more blood flowing from more bodies than anyone in Edo, but what connects them is their spirit and path. In this collection of classic stories, Itto must protect a young girl after her family is destroyed by a cunning courtesan. Meanwhile, Itto`s arch-enemy, Yagyu Retsudo, has sent the civilian police force to round up the Lone Wolf as a common criminal, and before long, Daigoro is coincidentally tangled in a messy pair of crimes. And, most dramatically, Itto returns to the scene of one of his past executions to enter a tender and honorable sword fight against an executed lord`s former retainer.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the Best early stories........2005-08-31

It's hard to pick out the best of a series such as this one which is filled with quality but this issue is clearly near the top. Penal Code Article 79, Dragnet, Night Stalker & Cloud Dragon Wind Tiger are all killer stories and the rest are almost as good.

This are some of the best of the first section before the discovery of the Yagyu letter, if you don't own it buy it.

4 out of 5 stars A world in ever finer detail.......2004-07-10

As most reviews of this series will contend, this is a story that cannot be put down once you start. Volume 7 has two particularly good stories. This is not to say that the other three are mediocre. Far from it.

"Dragnet" - awesome story of how the Yagyu clan manipulates the shogunate into rounding up all criminals just to catch the one ronin they want. The world of Edo politics is really the heart of this story.

"Cloud Dragon, Wind Tiger" is another great story depicting the world of the samurai, more than that of our hero. In this case, the loyalty of a samurai is examined -- seen from many points of view -- Ogami Itto's inevitable winning duel becomes less important about the survival of our hero than for the metaphor of the death of the virtuous retainer and the code he embodies. The moral at the end of the story explaining "Cloud Dragon, Wind Tiger" is perfectly rendered.

Vol. 7 seemed to represent a shift in the storytelling. We still care about Itto and Daigoro -- but what really appeals to the reader is their world: a thriving decadence and a disintegrating ethos. When Itto has to use his trick gun, you know it's the samurai who have really lost. 4/5 stars here just to reserve my right to rave about the perfect 5 stories out of 5 later.

5 out of 5 stars Lone Wolf gives the stage over to other characters.......2002-10-23

The striking cover art by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley for Volume 7 of the Lone Wolf and Cub manga epic is one of his best, but I have to think it would have been more appropriate for Daigoro to be on the cover because in "Cloud Dragon, Wind Tiger," two of the five stories focus on the Cub rather than Lone Wolf. Kazuo Koike continues to provide a few additional details about the quest Ogamii Itto has taken along the assassin's road, but the emphasis has become a bit more about character than violence at this point in the tale. Furthermore, those characters being studied are now, more often than not, others besides the title characters. "Cloud Dragon, Wind Tiger" offers up five more episodes:

        (34) "Dragnet" has the Yagyu clan trying to find a way to kill Ogamii Itto without seeming to break their promise not to do so as long as the ronin stays out of the Edo Funai. Their plan is to have the police round up the Lone Wolf as a common criminal. But, of course, Ogamii rises to the challenge, seeing it as the perfect die to die.

        (35) "Night Stalker" is the first of the volume's two Daigoro stories, in which the youngster becomes enthralled by a lumber center while waiting for his father to return. In his explorations Daigoro stumbles up the handiwork of another assassin. This story relies primarily on Goseki Kojima's artwork as the dialogue, as you would expect, is rather minimal.

        (36) "Cloud Dragon, Wind Tiger" provides us another glimpse into the past life of Lone Wolf as the assassin encounters a man he had met in his former life. The title story is about a duel that has been a long time coming and serves as a fitting reminder that Lone Wolf is not the only former samurai of honor. Certainly a worthy story for providing the title of this volume.

        (37) "Inn of the Last Chrysanthemum" is another classic story in which Lone Wolf and Cub are essentially minor characters. This is really the story of Oi-Chan, one of the "Put-Out Girls" at the Inn. She persuades father and son to spend the night at the Inn, although she has been promised to another that night. Eventually we learn the story of her family's disgrace that has forced her to this position (which involves several scenes of sexual violence), and how Oi-Chan now has an opportunity to exact her revenge. (The cover art is for this story.)

        (38) "Penal Code Article Seventy-Nine" basically says that age is no excuse for breaking the law. This Daigoro story has the three year old once again waiting for his father to return and going off to investigate something of interest: this time a festival. Also there is "Quick Change" O-Cho, the famous pickpocket and her bag man. Pursued by the police, she gives a wallet to Daigoro and "If you keep this for me, I'll give you a Mon, okay? Promise...?" Of course, neither the thief nor the police can understand the importance of those words to a son who has observed that once hired, you did what your client orders to the last. We will also learn that Daigoro knows another word besides "Papa." Another extremely moving story from Koike and Kojima.

The three "guest stars" of the last three stories are all extremely well drawn characters and you become so captivated reading about their lives that you forget they are but incidental characters, never to be seen again after the tale is done. You know, I am going to stop counting how many times I think that I have just finished reading the best volume in this series. I am just going to continue reading one episode a night and savoring them. Just do not explain why I have waited this long to start enjoying one of the classic "comic book" stories of the 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars The tradition continues...........2001-08-23

Following in the footsteps of the earlier editions, Ogami Itto continues in his slow but unfaltering quest to reveal the crimes of the Yagyu. And the Yagyu are aware... In this issue Itto and his son Diagoro face a Yagyu dragnet, a lone samaurai from an execution past, a young woman willing to give her life to avenge her family, and Diagoro witnesses the murder of a princess. Amid the varying side plots the intensity continues to build - how should a lone man and a young child with no material resources continue against the odds of a clan, luck and life pitted against them ? This is again, a fabulous book....

            Book Description

Edgar Rice Burroughs was not satisfied with creating characters and events within the world that we know; instead he created whole new worlds for histories, and he filled them with peoples, languages, cities, wars, plants, machines, and monsters that were believable to the reader, yet still alien and fantastic enough to thrill and delight.

From A-Kor, the keeper of the Towers of Jetan in Manator, through Zytheb, one of the priests of Brulor in Ashair, this is a comprehensive reference to the fantastic worlds of Burroughs. Each entry provides a complete definition, along with a reference to the book in which the entry appeared. For terms, the language, either actual (e.g., Latin and French) or Burroughs-created (e.g., The Tongue of the Great Ape or Pal-ul-don), from which it was derived is given.

4 out of 5 stars Good But Not Quite Complete.......2006-09-21

As an introduction to the Dragon with 2. ... d6 this book does very well, presenting material in the form of complete games with analysis. This is very important to us class level players so we can see what kind of middle game positions arise and how they are played.

The book covers variations of the Yugoslav Attack quite nicely, giving ideas for both sides, again with full games to illustrate the principles. The Levenfish Attack is also covered sufficiently.

So what's missing? While it might be asking too much, there is nothing at all on the Accelerated Dragon. Remember, this is a "Starting Out" book --- and at the class level starting out with the "normal" Dragon (with 2. ... d6) is anything but easy --- many teachers suggest the Accelerated Dragon as an option to avoid all the complex theory of the Yugoslav.

I realize the book can only be a certain length. But it leaves out an important option. One star off for that, but the full four stars for the quality and understandability of the material presented.

A good book to begin your exporation toward Master play in the Sicilian Dragon. This book should be supported by another book on the Sicilian Dragon that covers your favorite Sicilian Dragon Varation in greater detail once you begin playing it.

1 out of 5 stars Forget about this book.......2005-12-09

Can't understand anything in this book. It's too confusing and the analysis is horrible. Stay away from all Andrew Martin stuff.

4 out of 5 stars A good book about an exciting Black defence to 1 e4.......2005-12-09

This is a fine chess book about the Dragon, a variation of the Sicilian defence in which Black puts his King Bishop (the glorious "Dragon Bishop") on g7, where it exerts pressure on White's Queenside. The opening moves are 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 g6, after which White has several choices.

One idea is 6 Be3 Bg7 7 f3 Nc6 8 Qd2 0-0. This is the well-known and highly analyzed Yugoslav Attack. As Martin explains, White then castles long with the intention of playing h4 and h5, to open the rook file. White may also play Bc4. White generally wants to get rid of that Dragon Bishop (say, with Bh6) and to get the Queen into the attack (say, with Qh6), get rid of Black's defending Knight on f6 (usually via Nd5) and mate Black on h7. Martin starts us right out with a very famous Dragon game, in which then fifteen year old Bobby Fischer (with White) defeated Bent Larsen in the 1958 Portoroz Interzonal. That game reached the Yugoslav Attack position after eight moves and continued 9 Bc4 Nxd4 10 Bxd4 Be6 11 Bb3 Qa5 12 0-0-0 b5 13 Kb1 b4 14 Nd5 (as Martin mentions, the Knight was heading here anyway) 14...Bxd5 15 Bxd5 Rac8 16 Bb3

At this point, Fischer, in his "60 Memorable Games" commented that Larsen was not going to get another chance to grab the Bishop! Martin agrees that Larsen ought to have taken it. It is clear that White has a big advantage now. And Fischer says here that he "felt the game was in the bag if I didn't botch it. I'd won dozens of skittles games in analogous positions and had it down to a science: pry open the KR file, sac, sac, mate!" I certainly can understand why Fischer said that!

However, Martin makes a mistake here that costs him a star from me. He puts Fischer's quote not after White's 16th move, but after Black's 5th move, as if Fischer thought the entire Dragon were busted! And he tosses in the absurd comment that "today, even Fischer would find life a great deal more complicated against a Dragon specialist." I suspect Martin is wrong about that! Would he really like to defend Black's position at move 16 against someone of Fischer's strength?

Anyway, Martin shows us how Fischer then won this very instructive game.

The author has some good chapters on the Yugoslav. He thinks 9 0-0-0 is the most dangerous move for White (I agree), and advises Black to avoid it (with 7 f3 Nc6 8 Qd2 Bd7). We also see Karpov's favorite, 9 g4. Black needs to defend very accurately here, but Martin gives some good advice on how to do so. Of course, if you take Martin's earlier advice and play 8...Bd7, you won't get into this position in the first place. Martin then has over 50 pages on 9 Bc4. His recommendation for Black is to try the "Chinese Dragon" (9 Bc4 Bd7 10 0-0-0 Rb8). The idea of this rook move is to support ...b5.

After that, there is a chapter on the Classical Variation, with 6 Be2, and then an excellent one on 6 Bc4. Martin also gives some other tries for White at move 6, including 6 g3. There is also an entire chapter on 6 f4. This is the Levenfish, and it's what I play, both because I like it and because I do not like to put my Bishop on e3. While Black ought to be fine in this line, Martin shows that White's threat of e5 gives her some excellent practical chances, especially against the right opponent at the right time.

Here is a game I played with White against the Dragon against a Candidate Master when I was a very weak player myself.

                1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 g6 6 f4 Nc6 7 Bb5 (as Martin says, this is Botvinnik's move) 7...Bd7 (this is all Martin gives for Black, but this line is trappy and I think he should have given more advice here) 8 Bxc6 bxc6 9 e5 dxe5 (9...Nd5 makes more sense) 10 fxe5 Nd5? (this move loses; 10...Ng4 is the right move, and Black should stand a little better after 11 e6 Bxe6) 11 Qf3 Bg7 12 Nxd5 cxd5 13 0-0 0-0 14 Qxd5 (White's attack has played itself so far. I didn't play the rest of the game all that well, but as you will see, I didn't need to.) 14...e6 15 Qe4 Rb8 16 b3 Qa5 17 Re1 Rfc8 18 Bg5 Qc5 19 Bf6 (trying to get rid of that Dragon Bishop) 19...Bc6 20 Qh4 Bf8 21 Kh1 Ba8 22 Qg4 (22 c4 is better.) 22...h5 23 Qf4 Qd5 24 Re2 Rc3 25 Rf1 Qb7 26 Rf3 Rbc8 27 Rxc3 Rxc3 28 Rf2 Qe4 29 Qxe4 Bxe4 30 Re2 Bf5?! 31 Nxf5 exf5? (now it's really over) 32 e6 Rc6 33 e7 Bxe7 34 Bxe7 Re6 35 Rxe6 fxe6 36 Bf6 Black Resigns

I like this book, but let's just say I'd much rather have White than Black in the Dragon!

                  Book Description

In some parts of the world, especially in developing markets, category management today remains a stretch goal – a new idea full of untapped potential. In other areas, the original eight-step process that emerged in the late 1980’s forms the foundation of many companies’ approach to category management. In still others, particularly in developed countries like the U.S., the U.K., and others, refinements are being made – most of them designed to place consumer understanding front and center.

New ideas are emerging – from "trip management" to "aisle management" to "customer management." Whether a new descriptor emerges to replace "category management" is yet to be seen. Even if that does happen, what won’t change is the overall objective – to help retailers and their manufacturer partners succeed by offering the right selection of products that are marketed and merchandised based on a complete understanding of the consumers they are committed to serving.

This book, which explores both the state of and the state-of-the-art in category management, is for everyone with a vested interest in category management. It can serve such a broad audience because category management is about bringing a structured process to how executives think and make decisions about their businesses, no matter what information and information technology they have access to.

Some management publications slump into excessive conceptual theories, meaningless acronyms, or pointless detail that serve only to turn off the novice, while failing to add tangible value to those seeking to enhance existing expertise. ACNielson's "Consumer-Centric Category Management" is not one of these publications. The book is well structured, guiding the reader, in plain concise English, through the key A - Z stages, techniques, benefits and risks associated with the category management. Like me, I'm sure you'll find in every chapter practical ideas you'll be keen to try out.

If you want to win in the shelves, and add value (profit), start to think in this fundamental subject. The book is not complete and doesn't have a minucious (technical) aproach, but has good cases and ideas to how conduct this action in your business.

if you are not a retail guru, but if you're an executive involved with retail, fast moving consumer goods, shopper understanding, category management, trade promotions, and so on, you must read it. At the end of your reading you'll understand the importance of shoppers in the FMCG business, wich is the functionallity of decision trees, what's next beyond category management (trip management). Why is so important to understand shopper's behavior to achieve succesful exhibits and boost your sales.

This is an excellent book for anyone involved in Category Management, seasoned pros and newbies alike.

It is not surprising to see of the companies and people involved in this book. It's disappointing to get through it and not hear from some of the great companies doing great work today. More people should share what they're doing.

The authors take great care to list the different tools used by each company. Kind in mind who who sponsored the book and realize that their are other tools at work in this industry.

Mark it up and keep it around. It has a great index and will serve as a good reference tool.
